5 most important Estate planning Documents

by sharon ravenscroft, Esq.

Estate planning documents protect families

when there is illness or death and in regard to finances and health. Here are the five most important estate planning documents:

1 Last Will and Testament provides a simple way to authorize the person to take care of children’s

living arrangements called the guardian and sets out how assets are to be distributed.

2 The Revocable Trust agreement allows you to choose the person you want to over see your assets

for your children in the way you want it distributed. Otherwise, the court has to be involved which will limit how it is used and disperse it all out when the child reaches 18.

3 Durable power of attorney authorizes a person to handle your finances and business

decisions without court involvement. Without a power of attorney for finances, if a person becomes

incapacitated, a spouse does no one has legal authority to handle 401ks, IRA or other financial decisions. A financial power of attorney is “durable” if it remains in effect even if the person writing it becomes incapacitated.

4 Health care power of attorney designates your choice of who will assist and oversee

health care. You can avoid court involvement for any health care, whether medial or mental health care, such as when Alzheimer’s or brain injury occurs.

5 Health care declaration, often called a living will, this allows you to direct what sort of end of

life medical care you will allow. Z

Every parent strives to provide the best education possible to a child – and dual enrollment can smoothly pave

the way for successful entry into university studies. Students experience the same level of instruction, resources and rigor that the traditional collegian receives, while parents and high schools can continue to offer support.

Beyond efforts to ensure that students are well-pre-pared to move to the next academic level of study, dual enrollment often provides several benefits to students and families, such as:

DEEply DiscountED tuition. For example, Grand Canyon University offers tuition at $52.50 per credit.Variety. A wide variety of classes are available for col-lege credit – from math and science, to humanities and language studies.

accEssibility. Although each university may operate their program differently, often times a tuition waiver may be available for dual enrollment classes taught in the high school to students receiving free or reduced-price lunch or who show proof of participation in a federal benefits program such as SNAP or AHCCCS.

no rEsiDEncy rEstrictions. Some dual enrollment programs offer the opportunity for students to receive the same tuition rate, regardless of residency.

transFErability. Many private and public universities and community colleges share the same regional accreditation, typically making credits earned through dual enrollment transfer-friendly.

Through these programs, students have the option to earn college credits through a college or university as part of their regular school day, or have the opportunity to earn credits online or on a university campus outside of school hours (including Saturdays).

While course prerequisites and GPA requirements usually apply, dual enrollment presents a unique oppor-tunity for high school students. Students who may have not seen themselves as candidates for college gain con-fidence to further their education; students with their sights set on university studies receive a head start; and parents can enjoy significant savings before the college years begin. Z

leigh critchley is executive director in the Department of strategic Educational alliances at grand canyon university. For more information on dual enrollment through gcu, contact your school or district to see which courses are offered in your school, or email [email protected] to inquire about online, after-school or saturday courses. critchley and her team also can be reached at 602.639.6808.

how do you set your student up for successin today’s Vast, competitive market?

by rachel cohen, West-mEc central program recruiter

Start by providing them with opportunities to gain technical, leadership

and life skills; empower them to pursue deep-rooted learning with relevant course-work and hands-on training. Offer them innovative learning facilities, resources and equipment for professional and personal development.

Sounding a little out-of-reach?

Well, it’s not. This type of learning exists within your local public high school(s) and at neighboring educational facilities.

At West-MEC public high school district, students have these Career and Technical Education (CTE) opportunities at their fingertips. They are prepared to contribute to the economy and fill high-demand jobs in various industries, including but not limited to:

• Accounting• Aviation Technology• Building Trades• Computer Programming• Culinary Arts• Education Professions• Medical and Veterinary Sciences• Medium/Heavy Diesel

Additionally, students involved in CTE are statistically more engaged, test higher in reading

and math, and are more likely to graduate from high school.*

But don’t take our word for it, see what our students are saying:

“Taking the EMT Program really sets you apart from other students... It doesn’t feel like hard work when you are doing something you love.” -Aaron Coloma, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) student

“I have a much greater appreciation for the skills needed in order to become a part of the cosmetology industry... But, what I really love is seeing a glow in the eyes of a satisfied client.”-Ann Leach, Cosmetology student

“To live and to learn in one thing, but to strive and to earn is the next biggest thing. That’s what the Auto Tech program taught me.”-Weston Sartin, Automotive Technology student

mallorY BUiSKer Blue ribbon Winner

Q. tell us about your win at the State Fair art competition this year.

a: My Mom entered my art piece even though I didn’t want to because I thought there was no chance of winning a ribbon. I was so excited when I went to the fair with my friend and her family and saw my artwork right up front with a blue ribbon!

Q. tell our readers about your mentor program with artist/sculptor Susana erling. a: We went to Corrales, New Mexico on our spring break vacation to see my parent’s friend and Susana Erling. Susana is a retired school teacher who is a full time artist and has an art studio in her home. We started working on the piece that was entered in the fair.

Q. What types of thing did she teach you? a: Body proportion from a body mannequin, angles of the body, and

arms and hands. The core of the figure is masking tape that I shaped. This piece took patience and time to dry in stages.

Four Phoenix Country Day School students made a bright idea happen, and it’s helping other students in more than one way. The Upper School Business Club put a snack vending machine in Hormel Arts Center on campus. The club’s officers – junior Ben Whitmore, and seniors Adam Sidi, Aashay Sanghvi, and Sam Ax - recently received the first income from the machine’s sales, nearly $600. The club will distribute profits to student clubs during the year through a grant process.

here’s what a couple of the club’s founders had to say about the project:

adam Sidi: We spent countless hours creating presentations and having meetings with the Head of Upper School, the Headmaster, Director of Facilities, and the CFO. The whole process of finding the location, creating a competition for the wrap, and dealing with potential companies took six months. This project has taught me the most about business thus far.

Sam ax: The profits from sales go into a special fund, PCDS Ventures. Then the club’s officers, with our faculty supervisor, review the applications. We’re hoping to move the snack vending machine into the student center, which should bring in a lot more sales since there is more student traffic.

The St. Francis Xavier Elementary School Varsity Softball team captured 1st place in the large school Catholic Youth Athletic Association (CYAA) Tournament the end of January.  The girls were coached by Walter Funes and Troy Kochis, and the Girls Athletic Director, Erin Chapman.

The championship game was SFX vs. OLPH Scottsdale, and they were tied at the top of the last inning. St. Francis was up to bat and had two outs, they were preparing for a tie breaker inning, then Maeve Jones hit it and brought the 3rd base runner in winning the game! Great exciting end to the season for the Wolves! Principal Cavnar was there to cheer them on!

Q. What brought you to on-track academy (ota), tanner?

a. In 7th grade, I was in the hospital and ended up missing half the year. In 8th grade I was still healing and only attended the last month. Then I went to high school. I thought I could catch up, but I needed help. But none of the teachers really cared, or maybe they just didn’t have time to deal with me. So now I’m at OTA.

Q. Wow! Why were you in the hospital?a. I had necrotizing fasciitis, or flesh-eating disease. I had to have about 39 surgeries over one year.

Q. how has ota been so far? are you caught up?

a. It’s amazing. Like one big family. The teachers support me, work one on one with me. I have to retake algebra and then I’ll be caught up.

Q. any advice for someone who might go through a similar experience?a. Don’t give up!

tanner is a Sophomore at on-track academy

Q. What is your favorite part of the cooking club?a. I love all of the different ingredients and tasting the food. I like that Chef Whitney makes food that I can eat because I am gluten and nut free.

Q. What is the most delicious thing that you have ever made?a. There are many but the most delicious was probably the brownies and the pumpkin cookies with frosting.

Q. Do you have an all time favorite food?a. My favorites are my grandpa’s steak, my dad’s fried rice, mint and vanilla ice cream and gluten free donuts.

Q. What do you want to be when you grow up?a. An artist and a dancer who works at a hospital to help people. I also want to be a mom who cooks good food for my kids.

Q. What is your favorite thing about camelback Desert School?a. I love the teachers because they are all so nice and caring. I love learning math, reading and science. They make learning fun with lots of projects.

Jazz:Q. What is the best thing about attending odyssey Preparatory academy? a. The best thing for me is that I was able to start learning younger than everyone else and still doing well and having good grades in class. I started kindergarten when I was 4 years old.

Q. Between the violin and the piano, which do you like playing better?a. I really like playing the piano the best because it is easier to learn the positions. When you hit the right notes on the piano it does not change the sound of the note.

dodge ball and sprint tag, and I hang out with my friends.

Q. You just started playing Football this year? tell us about this. Do you like it so far? a. Yes, I love playing football. The best part about it is that you get to tackle people and I learn that if you play hard and try your best, you can earn a jersey.

Q. What position do you play? a. Middle line backer and safety.

nico and Jazz are both going into the 5th grade at the odyssey Preparatory academy
