Wheeled motorized vehicles may not be used off of authorized Forest Service roads or motorized trails to scout for fuelwood, but they may be used to retrieve cut wood if they cause no harm such as soil disturbance or vegetation damage. 2. Not all Forest Service roads and trails that are open to motor vehicle use are shown on this Fuelwood and Christmas tree cutting map. Fuelwood Cutting Restrictions 1. Prior to cutting, Permittee is required to call the 24-hour numbers (see cover) for current restrictions on the District where cutting will be done, regardless of where permit was purchased. 2. Motor Vehicle Use Restrictions1. Wheeled motorized vehicles may not be used off of authorized Forest
Service roads or motorized trails to scout for fuelwood, but they may be used to retrieve cut wood if they cause no harm such as soil disturbance or vegetation damage.
2. Not all Forest Service roads and trails that are open to motor vehicle use are shown on this Fuelwood and Christmas tree cutting map. Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM) are available from the Lassen National Forest. The MVUM show National Forest System roads and motorized trails that are designated for motor vehicle use.
Fuelwood Cutting Restrictions1. Prior to cutting, Permittee is required to call the 24-hour numbers (see
cover) for current restrictions on the District where cutting will be done, regardless of where permit was purchased.
2. Down or dead wood on the ground or standing (snags) may not be cut or removed:
• When marked with wildlife signs, or other official signs. • When marked with paint except for downed lodgepole. • In areas closed to firewood cutting or restricted on Zone maps. • Where “Cutting Prohibited” or similar signs are posted. • In Timber Sale areas or other commercial operations signed
“No Woodcutting”. • In Forest Service Recreation Sites, Trailhead Parking areas, or
Wild & Scenic River Areas.
3. Any snag within 100 feet of a paved road or highway or within 200 feet of a railroad or powerline may not be cut. This also applies to green Juniper in Hat Creek - Zone III.
4. Fuelwood cut under the attached permit is intended for PERSONAL USE ONLY and is NOT FOR RESALE.
Species Restrictions1. Dead ponderosa pine, Jeffrey-pine, sugar pine, white fir, Douglas-fir,
red fir, incense-cedar and juniper may be felled if they are 20 inches in diameter (63 inches circumference) or less measured 4½ feet above the ground.
2. Dead lodgepole pine may be felled regardless of size.
3. No standing hardwood species, live or dead may be felled.
4. Green juniper (Hat Creek - Zone III ONLY) may be felled if they are 20 inches in diameter (63 inches circumference) or less measured 4½ feet above the ground.
Recommended Fuelwood Utilization Standards and Slash Treatment
1. Cut and remove the entire tree bole to a 3 inch top.
2. Tops and branches should be lopped and scattered down to within 18 inches of the ground.

Christmas Tree Cutting Restrictions1. Wheeled motorized vehicles may not be used off of authorized Forest
Service roads or motorized trails to harvest Christmas trees.
2. Not all Forest Service roads and trails that are open to authorized motor vehicle use are shown on this Fuelwood and Christmas tree cutting map. Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM) are available from the Lassen National Forest. The MVUM show National Forest System roads and motorized trails that are designated for motor vehicle use.
3. Obtain a permit from a local District Forest Service Office or autho-rized vendor.
4. Permit must be signed by the permittee to be valid.
5. Do NOT cut trees larger then 6 inches in diameter (19 inches circum-ference) measured at ground level. Hint: 6 inches is the length of paper currency.
6. Leave a stump height of no higher than 12 inches (measured at ground level) and remove remaining branches from the stem.
7. Attach the permit to the main stem in such a way that it must be broken to be removed from the tree.
8. Attach permit to tree so that it is visible during transit.
9. Permit must remain on the tree while transporting.
10. Have your permit with you when you cut and transport the tree and show it to a Peace Officer or Forest Service Officer, should they ask.
11. Permittee must be present when tree is cut and removed.
Keeping your tree fresh…Because trees begin to lose moisture as soon as they are cut, they should be put into water as soon as possible. This helps avoid discoloring and drooping of the needles. As soon as a tree is brought to your home or other place of use, store it in a cool, shady spot with the butt end placed in water, sprinkling the branches and foliage with water daily. Cutting the butt diagonally (preferably with a saw) about an inch above the original cut will aid absorption of water. An evergreenwill absorb an astonishing amount of water through the butt. Most of this is soon lost by evaporation through the foliage.
Keeping your tree safe…The following tips can help keep your tree safe for about four to six weeks. • Keep the butt end standing in a container of water during the time the
tree is in the house.• Be sure the tree is well supported and is away from fireplaces,radiators,
television sets, or other sources of heat.• Check electrical lights and connections.
Please note that your permit DOES NOT authorize woodcutting or Christmas tree cutting on private land within the Forest or excluded areas indicated on the map. Violations of the terms of the permit may result in a citation.
