News and Views for 2012 President’s Message

This is the beginning of another year for our club and we hope that we have a full slate of directors who will guide the activities in a progressive manner for all our members and the breed we represent.

The annual general meeting is set for Sunday, March the 4th at the Comfort Inn just off the 401 at Ingersoll. See the flyer else where for more details. The meeting is basically set from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm because of the time needed to set up your used tack and show clothing sale. You will need time to shop and visit with each other .

I’m thinking about suggesting Thorndale Fair horse show and Western Fair District Arabian horse show point shows this year so that we can reduce our shows at Dorchester Fairgrounds to 4 . It would be a savings to our club and members can win prize money .

The first AHAEC called the Pro/Am show will be held on , Saturday , May 12th near Mount Forest. This will be a Region 18 qualifying show .

I remind everyone who is a member of the Zone One Arabian Horse Club Facebook page to check it out at least once a week . There are often important postings that can be of value to you .

One of my goals for this year is to encourage more members to show at the next level. The Summer Sizzler will be held at Western Fair District on the first weekend in June . There will be classes called “discovery classes” that are specifically meant for novice exhibitors so you won’t be intimidated by those who have professionally trained horses or by those who have been showing for years .

We should again be an active club at this year’s Can Am Equine Emporium in March at Western Fair District. The least we can do is have flyers about our club placed in the booth of OEF. We can also bring along some extra newsletters and have them available to new Arabian horse owners .

One of the new ideas for our club would be to have a class that our juniors can prepare for. It would be a freestyle performance class done to music. Another would be to have all pattern classes in our next newsletter. That way everyone has a chance to practise at home and no time would be wasted at shows to explain .

I remember last year we had some excellent open costume classes towards the end of the year. I’m hoping this will continue to grow this year.

Our club still has the best Native Costume class. I saw a couple of really nice costumes advertized recently. Maybe someone will pick those up and we could set a record with at least 10 entries .

I would ask that you would let me know which judges you like to have back this year. Some of you have already indicated your favourites .

I need to tell you that Mr Peter Cameron was impressed with our awards brunch we had in 2010 at which he was our guest. He liked our actual awards that everyone got .

President’s Message cont’dIt will be great to have some new members and horses come to our shows this year. We should

try to do more that just have shows. Clinics are very beneficial to all of us. We could also get out and do more Arabian promotion. This promotion could be putting flyers in tack shops and feed stores. Some of you ride your Arabian horse in parades. What a great way to getting the message out. Also showing your horse at all breed club shows like saddle clubs. I know many from my barn show at the Exeter Saddle club. One good thing about that is that it isn’t far to take everyone there.

Well I have run out of ideas at the moment except that hopefully this year all the directors will help look after the shows. I may want to bring my new horse out and show him a bit .

So >>> I hope to see most of you at our Annual General Meeting and tack and clothing sale. You might find some treasures there. Or perhaps you have so much stuff at home that you might want to set up a spot and see if someone might be interested in buying your bridle or saddle pad.

Time flies and the time has arrived to start training again for the first show .

What’s Going On...Many of you likely saw Elaine Ward’s wonderful demos at the West-ern Fair. There is now a facebook page, Western Style Dressage As-sociation of Canada, and this will be a wonderful new addition. For

more information, please check that new page out on Facebook.

AHAEC AGM Meetings *Abbreviated*Important Notes from the AHAEC AGM (for more information/complete meeting notes, please contact an AHAEC direc-

tor)AHAEC PRO-AM SHOW – Dan Cross & Danielle DonaldThe 2012 show will be held on May 12 at Quardream Equestrian Centre, Mount Forest, On with the judge being Chelsea Knoop from Gaines, MI., recognized for qualification for Regionals, Sweeps points and AHAEC Annual High Point awards. This will be an AHA One Day Show event, non Equine Canada approved. We encourage you to come out and join the fun at this event and make it a suc-cessful show as in the past two years.

AHAEC SUMMER SIZZLER – Dan Cross & Danielle DonaldThe 2012 Sizzler will be held at Western Fair, London, Ontario on June 2 & 3, with judges Richard Wright, ILL and Christine Johnston. GA. This will be a double judged show for Arabian horses and AHA points. Once again we will be hosting Arabian, Morgan, Saddlebred exhibitors with the addition this year of the Peruvians. Move in will be Friday afternoon and a class list will be available shortly.

AHAEC FALL FESTIVAL – Dan Cross & Danielle DonaldThis is a new show for 2012 and will be held at the Orangeville Fair Grounds September 8 and 9.Judge TBA. This will be a single judge show. Classes will be offered for Arabians and possibly other breeds. Information to follow when confirmed.Discussion of classes to be offered – all sweeps classes will be offered, request for Arabian Junior horse Country Pleasure, the Adult Amateur classes to be offered 18 & over with splits if required; look at the entries for the past five years to see what classes have not filled and if necessary put in TBAs for those; small classes where there are Pure and Half-Arabians which are small entries (Show Hack) can ride as one and presented as two classes. Become more efficient with time management. If changes are made to the original class list, wait until after post entries and print on a different co-lour so exhibitors are aware of changes & cancellations of classes (65 in 2010 and 71 in 2011).

Motion by Adriaan Brand/Allan Ehrlick that no charge will be levied on the exhibitor for selecting a TBA class to be added. Carried. If a class is not listed on any of the AHA approved class list and is requested by an exhibitor to be added it can only be done within 5 days and a cost applies of $35.00 which will be charged to the exhibitor.

Equine CanadaThere are a lot of Arabian rule changes and updates for 2012. Mainly – all dressage classes – protec-tive headgear must be worn at all levels and must conform with the types listed in the General Reg-ulations. The ages for youth will remain 17 & under for 2012 competition season and will change as of December 1 – the change will be Juniors 18 & under; this will necessitate a change in amateurs from 19 and over for the competition year 2013.All competitors should be aware of the rules in the Arabian division and the general regulations as they affect competitions. They can be downloaded by going to the website of EC equinecanada.ca – rules, Sec. A is for general regs. And Sec. B is the Breed section and you will find the Arabian rules there. In order to compete at shows in Ontario you will require a Bronze EC license; if you are going to compete at Nationals or in the US you will require a Silver license. If I can answer any questions regarding EC, please contact me at [email protected] Point Awards – Doris WoolnerOne of the problems is that whoever does well or wins at the Region 18 show will undoubtedly win the highpoint award due to the points received...regardless of the number in the classes. The points for Regional and Eastern Breeders classes are 20 for Champ; 15 for Reserve and 10 for each of the Top 5. The points are based on the principle as Sweepstakes – 50% of the placings, rounded up for an odd number. Ie. 10 horses, full Top 5, points ch 20, reserve 15, top 5, 10, 10, 10. Three horses; ch 20; reserve 15, 3rd no points.I have proposed a resolution that high point winners must attend at least one club show in order to have points count.

Communications – Dan Cross & Sheri RobertsThe deadline for newsletter information will be the 20th of each month. The website is now up to date so take advantage of the information on calendar of events.

Resolutions to the Annual Meeting01.12 Whereas the Treasurer if responsible for all financial matters pertaining to the Association,AND in compliance to the Association’s By-Laws and Policies,

Page 10: Zone One Arabian Horse Club - Winter 2012

THEREFORE, any person responsible for running an AHAEC event must submit all monies, paperwork/documents and profit/loss statement directly to the treasurer within 30 days of the conclusion of said event.Moved by Jane Whitwell, seconded by Janet Henderson, approved.

02.12 Whereas attendance at AHAEC shows is declining and these shows need to be supported

THEREFORE, one of the requirements of the rules for the AHAEC Annual High Point Awards is that points must be earned at least one of the AHAEC shows.Moved by Doris Woolner, seconded by Marilynne Cotten, approved.

03.12 Whereas there is a vast discrepancy in the points earned at Regional and Eastern Breeders class-es as opposed to other qualifying classes in the regular shows, giving a huge advantage to Regional and Eastern Breeders winners,

THEREFORE be it resolved that points from all shows that qualify for AHAEC Annual High Point Awards – AHAEC club shows, shows which have been approved and count towards these awards, Regional and Eastern Breeders classes will be determined for the top 5 winners by the number of horses in the class. Ie. 20 horses, 20 points to the winner, 19 for 2nd, 18 for 3rd, etc...3 in the class; 1st 3, 2nd 2, 3rd 3.Moved by Doris Woolner, seconded by Amanda deBoer, approved.

8. Nominees standing for Director positions are Allan Ehrlick, Tara Porter, Danielle Donald. Nomina-tions from the floor – Adriaan Brand for Sheri Roberts; Tara Porter for Cyndi Tryon.Jill Barton/Jane Whitwell to close nominations.

Tack and Used Show Clothes Saleto be held in conjunction with Annual Meeting

If you have any tack sitting around the basement, tack room even stored in the horse trailer and you are not using it now or in the near future you might wish to sell it to someone else. Sometimes you are ready for change in your show clothes and you already have a new outfit but it is too nice to discard, well someone in our club might like to buy it as it could be the only show clothes they would have for this year .

We already have some donated tack and used show clothes from several Arabian horse owners and exhibitors and they have given them to our club. Thank you Wes & Tara, Doug and Kate. I’m certain some members of our club will benefit as well as the club itself .

The timeline for the tack sale etc. would be from about 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm > then we would break for the AGM in separate board room. We’ll try to have all the business done by 3:00 pm and we can finish up with left over tack etc and be all cleaned up by 4:00 .

Page 13: Zone One Arabian Horse Club - Winter 2012

Coffee and Donuts will be available.

Good time to visit with each other and meet new members.

If anyone has any other ideas for this afternoon please bring them along.

Please look after your own stuff while at the meeting as much of it will be spread out in the front foyer of the hotel so we might need people to take turns watching everything that is set up for the time after the meeting.

HOPEFULLY THIS WILL HELP BRING MORE PEOPLE OUT TO THE AGM !

Breed PromotionWe’ve all heard it. We’ve even seen it or, sometimes, been the ones to even jokingly agree to it. I’m talking about

Breed Prejudice. It’s not even just our breed; how many times have you heard someone who owns an Arabian talk down about other breeds? I hear both sides of it constantly. It is, unfortunately, never going to go away. I remember

when I first started riding Arabians after years of Quarter Horse showing and oh boy, did I get an earful! “They’re hot, they’re spooky, what’s with the tail in the air? I’d NEVER trust an Arabian.” I still hear it now at our mostly QH stock type barn “She’s so short and aren’t they hot to ride?”

But then, we all know the truth. They are easily one of the most lovable breeds. But how many times do we just smile and turn away, knowing the truth? The turn-the-other-cheek mentality is one I know I’ve become used to but it doesn’t help us. Especially in a rough economy where we have to really fight to get new members.

All you need for evidence of this is our current membership slides in AHA in all sections; the most worrying is the slide in the Youth area. We’re not the only ones either.

So what are you doing to dispel the view of our breed? To bring in more people?

This has been on my mind a lot lately. Anyone who is part of the Facebook group for Canadian Arabian Owners and Breeders knows that we had a BIG (well...for Facebook canadian breeders) discussion on this. But when it started focussing on shows and such, I backed out. I’m not out to show much since I find other things more entertaining to take my horses to. It’s not just shows that should be our focus.

Anyone who knows me knows that I take my horses out to public as much as possible and I try to have them as fearless as possible with people. At the Western Fair, we were there more for breed promotion than showing (we love to show, but at the same time, I like talking to people more). Our tally was 200 people that visited our mares alone and got pictures, sat on the elder mare, asked questions, everything. We never say no to questions and I encourage people to do this. I agree, it gets tiring after a while after the same questions and statements (the “omg, that horse poo’d!” is a fav of mine) However, you never know who you might meet. One lady had had Arabians years ago as a young child and loved them...she took my name and number to get her in touch about buying. Another lady was in a wheelchair and had tears in her eyes when our Skye put her head in her lap so she could be stroked. These were people who could have had a negative experience but didn’t; they got to touch, learn, and be enchanted by these horses. And I know other members did the same thing at the show. For a one day venue without any real budget for just promotion, I congratulate everyone who took the time to talk to people and give out information.

This past year, I’ve taken my two mares out to more venues than before that are not Arabian or even show focussed. For example, they were both in the Komoka parade in July (with one mare ponying the other) and before the parade started, I had a man who used to breed Arabians make a beeline for us so he could chat. We had a lot of small children want to meet them. The other venue I go to is cow-sorting; if you ever want a slightly hostile environment, that sometimes does count as one against non-stock breeds. But now our little grey mare is so loved that I have people come over that are hardcore “QHer’s” who come to say they never liked Arabs before...but they are willing to make exceptions. Which, for some of these men, is a really big step. I like to change perceptions. even just a little at a time.

So, I challenge members this year to be a bit more open, maybe even a little pushy, to let people know how great our breed is. We should be proud of our horses, not modest. Look at other avenues besides showing. Try something a little different. I know I’m always surprised at what my mares excel at. Please, let me know if you take your horse to something a little different. I’d love to publish it! -----------Stacie
