Newsletter February 2016 View this email in your browser President's Report by Jacinta Fromm Hi Ladies, The two months since the last newsletter has flown by, but I trust that members enjoyed a very happy and relaxing Christmas/New Year period. Our Zonta activities for 2016 are already well underway! Australia Day Breakfast raised $3000, and birthing kits will now be ordered for assembly in the next few months. Our thanks to Mary for again hosting this event and having her garden the perfect setting. Many members and partners assembled to set up tents and furniture, many members donated equipment / utensils / raffle prizes / food and drinks, many members catered, many members attended. Thanks to Leanne for collating the Australia Day Quiz – many hours of work taking local photos and thinking of very tricky questions! Great teamwork that made for a very enjoyable morning with 76 attending, and achieving our goal of raising funds for Birthing Kits. Mary G has been coordinating Breast Cushions – see her article in this newsletter. We will continue to provide enough cushions to Toowoomba hospitals to meet this ever-growing demand. Sincere thanks to Mary, Nola and June who have been working over ‘our break’ to provide cushions urgently needed. Advocacy committee is currently organising a meeting at the end of February to review applications for Young Women in Public Affairs Award. Service committee has International Women’s Day Breakfast organised, and a flyerhas been sent to all members to start publicising this event. You will see that theBreakfast is being held this year at King’s Function Room – this will mean a largernumber can attend. We have also been able to secure a booking on InternationalWomen’s Day (8th March). At our February meeting, members will hear acomprehensive update, and how they can contribute with donations and assistance.

Jenny E and I are meeting with Safe Haven this week to discuss programs toadvocate for elimination of violence against women in our local community.Information will be presented at our February meeting, and we will discuss how fundsraised from our Say No to Violence Against Women breakfast could be allocated.

You will recall at the October meeting that Jenny shared information about Days forGirls – an international organisation whose mission is to have all women in thirdworld countries, homeless women and women in Aboriginal communities, suppliedwith or taught how to make feminine hygiene kits by 2020. The aim is to try to keepmenstruating girls in school – it is estimated that girls in third world countries canmiss up to eight months schooling over 3 years. Jenny has been in contact, and Nolahas sewn some kits. At our February meeting, we will discuss if Zonta Club ofWarwick could support this project.

Please think about your availability to attend Area 4 Meeting in Roma (again we willdiscuss at the February meeting). Warwick club has been asked to present a sessionon effective management of social media and website to promote Zonta. This isclearly a direct compliment on the behind-the-scenes high quality work done by LynProwse-Bishop! Our webpage is always current, with newsletters, photos, flyers –this is not achieved by many clubs. Sincere thanks to Lyn!

Looking forward to seeing you at our February meeting,

RegardsJacinta

Breast Cushion ProjectBy Mary Goyne

It is with gusto that we have our Zonta Breast Cushion project rolling in January2016! We had requests from the three hospitals in Toowoomba in early December forcushions and we did not have any to supply. In November we had already sent a boxof fabric, stuffing, thread, elastic and Zonta transfers to Numinbah CorrectionalCentre but I had not expected the first batch back so quickly. I kept fabric for 20cushions which I was able to sew early January, and Nola helped me stuff them anddo the final sew of bows and underside. No sooner had I done this than back cameabout 100 completed cushions via the Warwick Work Camp.June got to work and wrapped them all and included good wishes from our Club, andan acknowledgement printed by Leanne, of the Numinbah ladies. I work throughPaul Longman - Taffy - and he said some of the staff as well as clients volunteeredon the cushions over Christmas.

So I have delivered 40 cushions to Toowoomba Base, 36 to St Vincents and 32 to StAndrews. This was in proportion to their rate of use. June still has 10 to go.

On New Years Day Phil helped me pick up 20kg of Tontine stuffing from Ros Kinder. Can you imagine what we looked like on our trip back to Warwick.Very safe cargo incase of an accident! If any members are able to pick up more it would be helpful, butwe would need to make contact to make sure Ros has more on hand. Ros gets itdelivered in 50kg batches.

So our present status: On Australia Day I delivered another box of fabric and loads ofstuffing etc to the Warwick Work Camp. So we should get back about 160 completedcushions.

The next question is whether we order another box of of fabric and keep themomentum going? I have worked out that the three hospitals use over 500 cushions
