ZUNO President Liseli Sitali has
commended the government for allocating resources towards the recruitment Nurses and Midwives.
The government through the Ministry of Health has embarked on a massive recruitment exercise of Nurses and Midwives to be deployed at various health institutions across the country.
Over 3000 Nurses and Midwives have been offered employment in the public service.
The ZUNO President further expressed satisfaction that discussions on the recruitment of holders of Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees are still underway.
And Mr Sitali has described the improved allocation to the health sector as a step in the right direction.
The health sector experienced a setback in 2016 when its national
budgetary allocation went down by 1.3% from the previous year.
An estimated K 5.8 billion reflecting 8.9 % of the national budget was allocated to the sector in 2017 compared to 8.3%allocated in 2016.
“We hope the upward adjustment will be maintained until the country can set aside at least 15% of the national budget for the health sector as committed in the Abuja Declaration” said Mr. Sitali.

ZUNO resists removal of nursing unit from MOH headquarters
ZUNO has registered displeasure at the current restructuring of the MOH which involves abolishing the nursing unit in favour of the creation of national coordinators placed at various health institutions. The MOH unilaterally made the decision to abolish some units and directorates with the hope of effectively championing delivery of primary health care and universal health coverage by pushing staff closer to the service area. The restructuring has necessitated the appointment of two Permanent Secretaries, one in charge of Administration and the other for Technical Services. “ZUNO is in support of moving health personnel to the service area but not abolishing the Nursing Unit,” ZUNO President Liseli Sitali noted. He maintained that ZUNO is neither against the Minister of Health nor any office but that it will not support any decision that does not advance the nursing and midwifery profession in Zambia. ZUNO believes that abolishing the Nursing Unit from the Ministry of Health is removing Nurses and Midwives from the highest policy formulation level and the decision making table. “From the meeting and correspondence ZUNO has had with the ministry of health so far, indications are that the Nursing Unit will remain intact until consultations are concluded on how best Nursing and Midwifery would be represented in the ministry of health,” The ZUNO President disclosed.

ICN and partners launch Campaign to reduce maternal, newborn and child deaths
On 24 November 2016, the International Council of Nurses (ICN), the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO), the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), and the International Pediatrics Association (IPA) have published a report showing the global burden of mother, baby and young child deaths and launched the Together We Can campaign to tackle it.
ICN’s Chief Executive officer Dr Frances Hughes said the Together We Can campaign demonstrates the critical role of the health workforce in reducing maternal, newborn and child deaths.
“As nurses, we know that it is only by working together effectively that we can promote the interventions which work best to protect these vulnerable populations.” She said.
The report found that 75% of all maternal, newborn and child deaths occur in just 20 countries, and the major causes of these deaths are largely preventable.
The nine main causes of maternal, newborn and child death are: Hemorrhage, Hypertension, Maternal Sepsis, Prematurity, Asphyxia, Neonatal Sepsis, Childhood Pneumonia, Diarrhea, and Malaria.
Simple interventions to the way mothers and babies are cared for, such as the rotavirus and hib vaccinations, active management of third stage labour (AMTSL) and kangaroo care, could save up to 50% of these lives by 2035.
