A recent study conducted in the first quarter of 2009 by Pulse Research of Portland, Oregon projects a possible economic revival. Newspaper readers in all 50 states are represented in the findings, with over 250 publications participating.

Key economic categories fare well in the study, in spite of uncertain economic news: The automotive sector is positive. 22% of survey respondents will shop at a car dealer in the next 12 months; 9% intend respondents will shop at a car dealer in the next 12 months; 9% intend to purchase a new car and another 7.5% will purchase a new truck or SUV. Real estate is improving: 9.6% of readers intend to buy a personal residence, 6.4% plan to sell their residence, and 6.6% plan to remodel their home.

Retailers will see encouraging shopping also over the next twelve months, as 14% plan to purchase living room furniture, 16% plan to purchase a laptop computepurchase a laptop computer, and nearly 9% plan to buy a major home appliance Another encouraging sign for local economies is the desire to purchase close to home: where personal services are concerned, roughly three quarters of respondents plan to buy from local businesses.

The economic outlook indicated by the Pulse of America survey is more vibrant than conventional indicators suggest.
