Thank you for your continued support! This year’s Annual Report shows the generosity of so many, in so many ways. Donations of all kinds support the National Hellenic Museum (NHM) – individual and corporate giving as well as sponsorships, grants, memorial gifts, planned giving, and gifts of in-kind items and historical artifacts. We are honored to serve as a steward of the memories of Greek Americans, and your support helps secure the future for us all.

2017 was a time of further improvement for the Museum, especially for the NHM Collections and Archives. Our professional team worked together with interns and volunteers to enhance the physical infrastructure that protects and preserves the artifacts entrusted to our care. We are committed to maintaining the highest level of museum standards, following the most current and ethical best practices in the industry. Installation of updated storage areas throughout the building has helped the NHM Collections team to accomplish audits, artifact rehousing, and continued preservation. We have been hard at work planning for an upcoming digital initiative. Behind the scenes, the NHM has invested in implementing digitization software, collections management systems, and layers of backup for our digital files including our unique NHM Oral History Collection.

Operationally, the NHM team has been working to reduce overall costs and improve the rate of return from fundraisers so there is more to invest in the daily work of the Museum. The Trial of the Parthenon Marbles was a great success, offered CLE credits, and was filmed for television. Kouzina was very well attended by hundreds of guests enjoying every floor of the Museum.

In 2017, thousands of children came to the National Hellenic Museum, helping them to grow into informed citizens with a sense of pride in our shared history. Museum artifacts and oral histories are used to teach about culture and history every day. Thousands visited the exhibitions, attended classes and enjoyed interactive field trips. And all gained insight about themselves and society. Through these efforts, we have reached more people than in any prior year.

Our strategic vision positions the National Hellenic Museum as the central repository of the Greek American story. As the physical heart of our diverse community and the center of a wide-ranging Greek diaspora, we remain focused on taking the NHM Collections and Archives into the digital age. In this way, the Museum will continue to provide resources for family historians and scholars of all ages, everywhere. With your generous help, all these endeavors are possible.

NHM EDUCATION – LIFELONG LEARNING FOR ALL

The NHM Education team makes learning happen every day at the Museum. Trained museum educators use a variety of interactive and differentiated teaching methods to promote history and culture, build skills, encourage critical thinking, and inspire children and adults. The Museum School offers Classes, Courses, and Field Trips where anyone can learn about the arts, sciences and humanities as related to Greek history. Offered for pre-K through grade 12, all school programs match Illinois Learning Standards and Common Core Standards. Additionally, the Greek Language Program and docent Guided Tours are all tailored to meet the learning needs of each group and for every age. Supporting learning means your gift can have long-term impact on so many people.

MUSEUM EXPERIENCE – SHARING HISTORY AND CULTURE

The NHM is a center of experiential learning and engaged storytelling that brings historical topics alive in ways that diverse audiences can understand. Funding the museum experience enables the creation and curation of engaging exhibitions – including rotating and short-term narratives that inspire visitors throughout three floors of gallery spaces. Thought provoking tours with docents share the Greek American experience and rich aspects of the Hellenic legacy. Interactive museum experiences ensure that dynamic lessons from the past inform the future. Additionally, Community Events, Public Programs, and Lecture Series are ways to engage students from all walks of life. Donors can give to any of these specific activities to have a profound and specific impact.

NHM COLLECTIONS & ARCHIVES, ORAL HISTORY CENTER, AND LIBRARY –PRESERVING GREEK AMERICAN HISTORY

The NHM Collections serve as a central repository for Greek American history. Professional museum staff work to catalog, protect, and preserve the memories of our community. The Museum uniquely specializes in gathering Greek American stories through historically significant objects, archival collections, and oral history recordings. Artifacts, books, manuscripts, and digital media files require special care, shelving, and conservation. These activities require museum specialists to properly store, care for, and provide access to our culturally important holdings. Archival processes also include cataloging and digitization – and soon this will include accessible online portals for locating the artifacts and histories held in the NHM Collections. Through digitization, the Museum’s ability to support historical, genealogical, and academic research will be greatly enhanced by the NHM as it provides outreach to audiences onsite, offsite, and online.

MUSEUM BEAUTIFICATION & OPERATIONS –SUPPORT AND SUSTAIN THE INFRASTRUCTURE

The National Hellenic Museum has a committed position as the hub for preserving Greek American history. It serves as a real place where all can gather and share memories. A museum facility that is safe, secure, and enjoyable enhances the museum experience and helps draw community groups together. Needed support includes general, preventative, and emergency maintenance for the facility, enhancement of operational functionality, and overall upkeep and decoration. As the largest museum dedicated to the Greek American experience in the United States, keeping all aspects of the NHM in working order ensures that the Greek American community displays visible pride, demonstrates civic responsibility, and effectively supports learning for all. HELIAS DOUNDOULAKIS COLLECTION(Rita Doundoulakis) (2017.9)A dagger and sheath owned by Helias Doundoulakis. This style of knife is associated with British commanders and the US Office of Strategic Services (OSS).

THEANO MARGARIS COLLECTION(Vivian Kallen) (2017.7)A collection of personal archives from Theano Margaris, the donor’s mother, including magazines, awards, certificates, cards, and plaques commemorating her writing. Currently featured in the third-floor exhibit is her Remington 5 Typewriter, specially fitted with Greek keys.

JAMES MACHAS COLLECTION(Faye Kopplin) (2017.1)A collection of military artifacts and archives from James Machas’ in World War II service in addition to a hand-woven rug that was part of the dowry of Vasiliki Anagnostopoulos.

JIM MEZILSON PAPERS (2017.15)Large donation of archival materials relating to the history of the NHM and the Greek American community in Chicago and beyond. Donation includes newspapers, photographs, textiles, books, music, ephemera, and more.

KONSTANTIN RAPTIS COLLECTION (Pauline Sleder) (2017.2)An icon, two passports, and a suit worn by Konstantin Raptis when he immigrated to the United States from Salenika, Greece. These items were the only things Raptis had with him when traveling to America in 1951 and are currently on display in the third-floor exhibit Reaching for the American Dream.

THEMI VASILS ANCIENT VASE (2017.5)An authenticated 5th c BC Attic vase in the Lekythos style with scenes of animals painted in black. A collection of cups, saucers, & bowls were accessioned to the education collection.

THEMI VASILS (in memory of Theodora Vasils) (2017.10)A sculpture made by the donor’s sister, Theodora Vasils. The sculpture is of a woman standing, made of clay. Throughout her life, Theodora created many statues and paintings, in addition to her significant contributions to the National Hellenic Museum as a Curator and Researcher.
