W hen considering the purpose of this year’s school magazine, my team and I were
saddled with the dilemma; should the magazine be purely a record of school life as it happened, or should we take a more imaginative route, and transform the Innerview into an outlet of student opinions, thoughts and concerns. The Innerview today is a magazine that truly reflects the whole school, which chronicles the academic, sporting and social achievements of students, may in time be an outlet which will eventually include ideas and themes that reflect those of the students themselves.
Likewise we have begun taking little tiny steps for this magazine to be a roadmap which highlights student achievements, teacher achievements and the schools achievement as well as mapping out the students train of thought, throughout their stay here at Fairview International School.
Little have we realised that as the years pass us by, this school has become an institution by itself. It is no mean feat for a school to survive for 40 years, expanding its student base to more than 2,500 students as well as having five campuses in the most industrialised states in West Malaysia. Even institutions do learn to evolve, and Fairview as an education group has evolved. 40 years on, this is just no longer merely the largest International Baccalaureate World School in the country. Rather it has become an institution which offers not only the IB MYP qualification, but also the IGCSE qualification, the IBDP qualification and the NCUK IFY Pre-university qualification. And for our teachers we have the University College Fairview, the only teaching centre of higher learning in South East Asia which is endorsed by the International Baccalaureate Organisation. As the school has evolved, so shall the Innerview. What you see today is only the beginning. Francis Fernandez EDITOR

W hat a year 2018 has been for all of us. Who would
have thought a 93 year old man would be the catalyst of change in Malaysia. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s second coming as Prime Minister, captured the attention of the world, as well as bringing in great excitement to the Malaysian education field. Back en vogue is the usage of English, and a much greater emphasis on STEM education. STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach, rather than teaching the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects.
We have been doing this at Fairview, long before it became trendy, because one of our core aim as a school is to
have students who are “future ready”, hence our identification on the importance of English and the STEM subjects. No doubt, over the years the education methods have indeed evolved from using blackboards, whiteboards to
iPads and mobile applications. School fields, have been replaced with a full fledge educational resort in Port Dickson. But the spirit of our teaching and learning remains the same. For those who have just joined Fairview, allow me to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Fairview family. Some 40 years ago, this school was set up along Jalan Ampang, at the heart of Kuala Lumpur. At that point of time, we were
InnerView 2017/2018 9
a cabin school. Never did we imagine that someday, we would grow up to be the largest International Baccalaureate World School in Malaysia. Looking back, our core aim have always been about providing quality and affordable education. Now that we
are the largest international school in this country, providing IB education, our goals and aim remains the same: to provide quality and affordable education. Being involved in this school seems to be merely a “brief moment in time”. That statement itself should summarise, the personal joy, I have in being involved with Fairview International School. We have also realised that it is just not enough to provide quality primary and secondary education to our loved ones. Instead, we should guide them to the next level. With this in mind, Fairview has two quality university pathways in the offing, namely the NCUK International
Foundation Year (IFY), which guarantees students access to 13 universities in the United Kingdom, as well as the IB Diploma Programme, which has a 100 percent passing rate. We are in the top 27 per cent, best IBDP school in the world, while our University
College Fairview, the only university in South East Asia which offers post graduate studies to those intending to pursue a career as an IB teacher is starting to receive overwhelming support from the general public. I take great pleasure in being the chairman of this school, having seen my own children grow up within the four walls of Fairview and have careers on their own. I am pleased to inform you that the ethos of the school is still the same, which is education for a better world. While other IB World Schools are teaching students, Fairview is educating and training these teachers for other IB World Schools. Daniel Chian CHAIRMAN COUNCIL OF GOVERNORS

I t’s a great honour for me to pen a few lines for this year’s edition of InnerView Magazine. This year has been a year which has been filled with outstanding
achievements by the students. Our students have continuously excelled by participating in various competitions such as Math Kangaroo, as well as bringing home the bronze
medal from the Canadian Film Festival. They also did exceptionally well in the World’s Scholars Cup. University College Fairview has given our teachers the opportunity to pursue
their postgraduate studies in the field of teaching at par with standards set by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO).
As we are walking into our 40th year of existence, I am confident enough to know that we are still marching towards excellence, helped by the unending support of students, parents and teachers. Having a common vision, in my opinion is
a great plus point for us as we make changes where changes are required in order to set the course for a better future. Prof. Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Mohd Sham CHAIRMAN BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Not only education for students is important, education for the teachers
is also a priority.

W elcome to Fairview International School. For 40 years we
have served over ten thousand parents at our campuses in Kuala Lumpur, Subang Jaya, Ipoh, Penang and Johor Bahru. Inside these pages you will find stories and articles detailing the journey of our learners at Fairview over the last academic year. Each one of the 3000 students we serve from over 60 nationalities will walk a unique path and we are humbled that many chose to walk this journey with Fairview. Fairview remains the preferred choice of many parents due to our strong consistent academic performance, talented and skilled teachers and a vast array of school activities that continually engage and inspire our learners. Our bi-annual International Expeditions are a major highlight in each learner’s calendar, as well as the camps held at our Port Dickson Eduresort. Parents have really been supportive of our language programmes such as the English Support Programme where the success rate has been very high. This has also helped students integrate into the classroom after
only a year at Fairview. Last year we focused heavily on a new initiative, to provide more opportunities for students to compete in “high stakes” environments, such as the World Scholar’s Cup (WSC), Math Olympiads, Science fairs and Art exhibitions. Fairview students
will have many opportunities to have their mettle tempered by the fire of competition. All our school teams are coached by Fairview high-calibre teachers so please do encourage your children to sign up for one today! We have come so far in the last four decades and we owe all this to the dedicated teachers who care and believe in their students, that they can and will succeed. Their sacrifice often goes unnoticed by many but is an undeniable testament to their character as a believer in the potential of humanity. To our community of students and parents who believe and continue to place their trust in Fairview, I thank you. Ever Onward Dr. Vincent Chian PRINCIPAL OF KUALA LUMPUR CAMPUS

One girl can change the world, was a minor hit for Shuree in 2012. If indeed one girl can change the world, then it fits into our expedition motto of helping change negative perception into positive energy.
This is our Expedition. The Fairview expedition, which carries more than a thousand children a year to the far corners of the world.
We do this by allowing our children to walk on the other side of the grass to see what it is like to experience life in faraway places, and to break down the walls of perceptions.

HOW FAR WE HAVE COME TO THE END
The Celebration of Learning had always been conducted to mark the end of each semester for
the entire Primary Years Programme family, from Reception all the way to Grade 6.
For one entire afternoon, each class had the chance to showcase their presentation which relates back to their ongoing Unit of Inquiry which had been integrated with other subjects.
Some grades allow parents to participate in a hands-on activity with their child. This allows them to experience what our students had gone through during their academic journey.
After the presentation, students are generally excited as they were able to demonstrate what they had learned with their parents through their individual portfolios and blue folders.
Even though the entire afternoon was tiring, our students and parents were ecstatic as it marks the end of the semester!

WE ENJOY LEARNING IN CLASS
The PYP students of Fairview Johor welcomed their parents
enthusiastically into the classroom with a variety of performances.
Students prepared various activities such as short plays and music performances.
Throughout the celebration of learning week, students showcased what they had learned, as their parents enjoyed being part of their children’s learning process.
The entire experience was a befitting end to an inspiring Unit, which brought the children one step closer to being the courageous, compassionate and responsible learner who will in the not-so-distant future, apply this knowledge and understanding to create a better world.

IT’S A DOUBLE CELEBRATION
It is often said that shared activities outside scheduled school hours create an enjoyable
memory and a strong bond among students.
With this in mind, we have aligned our quarterly Celebration of Learning with our campus International Mother Language Day celebration. This special occasion is a worldwide annual celebration that is held on every 21st of February. As an IB World School, the International Mother Language Day is celebrated to promote the preservation and protection of all languages.
On the 7th of March, our students showcased their talent in various forms which included dancing, singing, and a fashion show. This event truly showed how our students developed their intercultural understanding through their presentation and communication skills.

SEE ME SHINE As an IB school, we encourage students to take
charge of their learning.
One of the ways is through the Celebration of Learning (CoL). It is a student-led activity that offers quality time for the student and parent to sit down together and share the PYP journey after the end of a unit of inquiry. Prior to the CoL, students would discuss and reflect on their learning, organising materials and practice for the big day! It includes students’ presentation, sharing of portfolio and learning evidence. Students take responsibility for their learning by sharing the process with their parents.

The students were divided into groups of four or five. Through efforts of collaboration, the students formulated their own central idea and lines of inquiry and conducted surveys. Data analysis followed afterwards whereby they presented their results through different charts and graphs.
On day one of the two-day exhibition, students first had to present their work to the whole school. Feedbacks from the school guests were given to evaluate their work. During the second day, parents and external guests were invited to view their creative and informative work. The exhibition was accompanied by a variety of performances such as cultural dance shows, mini orchestra, and a compilation of iMovie presentations from each group.

IT WAS A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERIESThe students individually presented their understanding of the central idea and the topics they chose to focus on.
As a culminating activity, G6 students were engaged in a collaborative inquiry and presented their findings to the wider community during the PYP Exhibition, which is indeed a BIG event for students, teachers, parents and the school.
The students showcased great enthusiasm and creativity in their presentations and also showed a deep conceptual understanding of the topics at hand.
In a nutshell, the exhibition was a journey of discovery and learning; one of deep realisation that every scientific invention leaves a trace towards people and the environment. Way to go, Grade 6!

Triangle is a solution to an equation, yet a triangle also comes with a Pandora Box of mysteries such as the Bermuda Triangle.
We haven’t quite figured it out yet but what we do know is that when parents, teachers and students come together, there is only one answer to this equation.
The answer is LOVE. Our tripartite learning is not to identify who is the smartest, rather it is a labour of love by parents, teacher and students.

Once a semester, Fairview would open the doors to welcome parents to partake in a project that
is related to the semester’s Unit of Inquiry.
This is where both parents and students work together to create either a poster, model, an information booklet or a role play which demonstrates the topic of discussion. Such activities provide parents the opportunity to understand the Unit of Inquiry as well as being involved in their child’s educational process. The activity also gives the students the platform to showcase and impart their knowledge of the unit, creating a sense of pride in their achievements.

MUSIC IS A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE
Music can be learned through different fun and engaging activities.
Learning and writing musical notes becomes fun when we do it with colour pencils. Students memorise the notes and the name of the colours when we associate the notes with things that they do or see in their daily life. They also can express themselves by writing their own lyrics for commercial music. By learning about the structure of a song, they can simply name the verse, chorus and bridge while listening to a song on their way to school. Students practised their rhythmic skills by playing along with percussion via the videos shared by the “YouTuber Musication”. They also reinforced their understanding of rhythmic patterns and note names by playing a hybrid musical chair game.

Let us discover how Fairview makes learning Mandarin a fun process for our students. Learning approaches such as music, games, role plays, short skits and flash cards were some of the ways to help our students to learn Mandarin efficiently. Learning through the concept of FUN can help establish interest of the students to learn Mandarin by heart. Students enjoy the happy environment while learning. We have long said goodbye to the usual boring traditional Mandarin class.

MANDARINAs part of the Grade 6 exhibition, students wrote
their group reflections in Mandarin. With the Mandarin teachers’ help, the students managed to brush up on their written assessments as they
recorded their reflections orally in Mandarin.
By applying the vocabulary and grammatical structures in Mandarin, students were able to express a wide range of ideas and perspectives on the scientific advancements in natural resources and in protecting the environment. We are very proud to see the Grade 6 students applying their Mandarin language knowledge to demonstrate their thinking skills, communication skills and research skills to achieve the purpose of the transdisciplinary inquiry. We believe this experience would be unforgettable and invaluable for both the Mandarin teachers and our Grade 6 students.

CONCEPT, WRITING, PRESENT.MYP students explored the key concept of change and development under the Global Context of Scientific and Technical Innovation.
The unit title was “Technology and Future” where the students shared their views on the development of technology, which transforms human’s perception and life.
We also discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the Internet. They also covered on essay writing focusing on “resume” and “occupation”. This enhanced their vocabulary and writing skill in Mandarin.
For Summative Assessment, students were asked to use all the vocabulary and proper sentence structure that they learnt during the lessons. This task improved their speaking skills in terms of pronunciation and intonation.

UTILISING TOOLS IN LANGUAGE LEARNING
“Learning languages isn’t about being smart, it’s about
being tenacious”
Fairview students are always determined to learn as much as they can. By utilising visual aids, roleplay, iPad apps and fun games, students were able to develop their confidence in writing in Mandarin. Who says that you need to stick to pen and paper?

MANDARIN IS EASY!Mandarin has been recognised as one of the hardest languages in the world but our students are actually enjoying learning Mandarin.
This is because Mandarin is learned through fun activities and task-based teaching.
Besides, it is also incorporated with several cultural activities such as calligraphy, Chinese zodiac and paper cutting to promote intercultural competence among them. Furthermore, Mandarin lessons are highly integrated with student’s journey of inquiry!
