The success of our aviation business lies in listening to our customers, so we can deliver unique benefits and the right products when they need them.

We understand the requirements of the world’s leading airlines and airports, and they know they can rely on Puma Energy to meet all international quality standards, offer fair prices and deliver on-time tailored fuel solutions that will meet their specific needs and contribute to their success.

Our customers have complete trust in our operating standards because our procedures for testing quality are rigorous and carried out before we release any batch of jet fuel to the airport. Then at the airport depot, quality checks are carried out to guarantee that the jet fuel itself is clear, bright and not contaminated by water. Another set of tests is done before each loading of fuel to the airline.

And our customers can rest assured that our products comply with international standards at all times. Our up-to-date infrastructure, maintenance and investment programme means we operate in line with the highest industry standards. We can demonstrate traceability from refinery to into-plane delivery to ensure that no properties of the fuel have changed during the product journey.

We specialise in both large and smaller, remote airports and cover the entire supply chain up to fuelling the aircraft. We also bring our experience in engineering and construction to building aviation depots and maintaining infrastructure. Every one of our aviation sites is regularly and rigorously audited. Our airport and into-plane operations conform to Joint Inspection Group (JIG) and International Air Transport Association (IATA) standard into-plane fuelling procedures.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR NEEDS

FROM TOUCHDOWN TO TAKE OFF

Water detectionIt is possible for tiny amounts of water to enter the fuel supply chain in several ways, for example during pumping, or as a result of a fall in fuel temperature.

JIG regulations stipulate that you must test for this and we use water detector technology to effectively and simply check our aviation fuel for finely dispersed undissolved water that cannot be detected by visual inspections. Reliability of this process is critical to guarantee safety in our operations, so we ensure it is manufactured following strict quality assurance standards and the manufacturer has ISO 9001:2008 accreditation for quality management.

TAKING THE DIGITAL LEAD

It’s our job to make it easy for our customers by taking care of everything – from importation, handling, storage, bridging and transportation, to into-plane operations at the Puma Energy airport depots run by our own people or trusted partners.

We have recently implemented various technologies to make our business fast and efficient. Our new Customer Relationship Management solution covers the end-to-end commercial processes from tender and contract management to customer invoicing, using the latest XML and cloud technologies. At airport level, we have rolled-out a dedicated fuel management solution, including automated fuelling data capturing and sign-on glass facilities that capture signatures digitally. The system also handles physical inventory management, scheduling and operations performance reporting.

These new digital initiatives have reduced manual processes and optimised our operations, both on the field and at back-office level, to facilitate the customer journey from fuelling to invoicing and guarantee the quality of our operations.

Myanma Petroleum Products Enterprise (MPPE) has been implementing the Joint Venture Project for aviation fuel service with Puma Energy Pte. Ltd since 2015. By doing so, the following benefits are accessed by MPPE and its staff: gaining competitive advantage through access to a partner’s resources, including markets, technologies, capital and employees; access to the knowledge transfer and technology transfer from multinational expertise to local staff; upgrading the facilities for aviation fuel services and improving HSE practices; creating job opportunities for local people; and fulfilling customers’ satisfaction more than before.

CASE STUDY COMMERCIAL AIRLINES

Uplifting Myanmar’s aviation fuelling sectorWhen the Myanmar Government decided to improve the country’s aviation fuelling sector as part of opening up the country to tourism and new business investment after decades of isolation, Puma Energy was selected as their partner following a highly competitive international tender process.

Working with the state-owned fuels company, MPPE, we set up NEPAS, and this joint venture is now responsible for importing and distributing all aviation fuel in Myanmar, as well as for into-plane fuelling and marketing of aviation-related petroleum products at all 11 airports across the country. NEPAS also fuels government customers not fuelling at public airports and supplies avgas and aviation lubricants.

As part of the deal, Puma Energy committed to upgrading all of Myanmar’s ageing fuelling assets at the country’s airports to meet international standards for quality and performance. The IATA and Joint Inspection Group now certify Myanmar Airports as ‘Green’ facilities, meaning that all operations have achieved IATA/JIG standards.

Under Puma Energy’s construction and operational management, NEPAS has also upgraded all Myanmar’s jet fuel infrastructure, including storage depots, jetties, pipelines and airport facilities. A further major investment has been made in nine jet fuel tankers to replace the previous ageing fleet that had been prone to breakdowns, rusting and calibration issues. These new state-of-the-art vehicles were among the first to carry the Puma Energy logo throughout the Yangon region, signalling the significant part we are playing in fuelling the country’s growing economy.

Our aviation fuel joint venture, NEPAS, is responsible for all into-plane fuelling at 11 airports across Myanmar.

CASE STUDY COMMERCIAL AIRLINES

Expanding our aviation business in AfricaPuma Energy Angola entered the aviation market in 2016 with the opening of four new aviation depots in Luanda, Benguela, Lubango and Ondjiva. These sites service domestic, international and commercial aviation customers and the entry marks an exciting development for our aviation business in a market that had been dominated by a monopoly for decades.

In Tanzania, we recently completed the extension of an existing hydrant jet fuel pipeline,  as part of the Dar es Salaam International Airport expansion. Our own construction team was responsible for the design, installation and commissioning of all essential works on the project, and as result we can now fuel customers even faster and more efficiently at the airport.

Puma Energy is also helping Ghana’s Kotoka International Airport to achieve its goal of becoming a hub for aviation and trade in the West Africa region. Although Ghana is one of Africa’s leading oil producers, Kotoka Airport previously lacked the storage infrastructure needed to refuel its aircraft. Since we invested in a 10,000 cubic metre storage facility at the airport and a 15,000 cubic metre intermediate import depot in Tema to supply the airport, the storage capacity at the airport has increased seven-fold.

Now that commercial airlines have consistent, reliable access to quality fuels, Kotoka International Airport has seen increased flight traffic into the country, with some major airlines choosing to use Ghana as their hub rather than neighbouring countries. We have also worked with the Ghanaian Government and IATA to reduce tax on aviation fuel by 25%, enabling Kotoka and other airports in the country to contribute even further to Ghana’s trade and investment.

When the Puma Energy Group invests in health, safety and the environment (HSE), we are investing in the future of our business, as protecting our people and the planet is a big factor in our efficiency, people retention and reputation.

We have a strategic priority to keep our staff, customers and communities safe – both on land and offshore. There are few places in the world where health and safety is a greater concern than in an airport and we invest in safety training for all our employees, as well as maintaining the highest standards of safety and security when transporting our fuels from our terminals.

As an energy business, we understand the value of limited natural resources, so are always looking for ways to reducing our energy and water use, or cut carbon and costs with technological innovation.

And operating in some of the world’s most remote and environmentally sensitive regions, we take our responsibility to the environment extremely seriously. We conduct regular environmental and social impact assessments, and use them to develop local environmental compliance and management plans. From working with local communities to restore inherited contaminated land; to maintaining an exemplary track record on spills – we often go beyond what local law requires us to do.

HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT

We continue to focus on road safety across the Group. We help our road transporters invest in safer vehicles and provide internal and contracted drivers with training support, including our eight memorable and easy to follow golden rules and one-to-one sessions. We have also extended our campaign to our communities, promoting pedestrian road safety awareness and school events.
