Praise be to God, Lord of all the worlds. The Compassionate, the Merciful. Ruler on the Day of Reckoning. You alone do we worship, and You alone do we ask for help. Guide us on the straight path, the path of those who have received your grace;not the path of those who have brought down wrath, nor of those who wander astray.

In the name of God, the infinitely Compassionate & Merciful.

Letter from the Editor

Times are a changing! The year 2016 marked 30 years of education at Al-Taqwa College. Over the 30 years, we have taught students who have gone off to further education, start families and return as teachers and staff. It just goes to show the dedication of many of our students.

As the years fly by, it’s difficult to determine, ‘what was the most significant event that stands strong in my memory?’ There are so many highs and lows in a student’s educational lifetime we hope that this momento brings back to life a few of those memories.

For those who are going onto further education, keep in mind that it’s not all about the money. Job satisfaction is crucial in ones’ career. If you’re not happy at work, it filters on in every other aspect of your life. So get out there and enjoy your lives!

Congratulations 2016 Graduates, all the very best in your future endeavours.

The year has been quite a challenging one, with many activities and visitors during 2016. There were international expeditions by our staff with the experience and knowledge very invigorating. All the successes achieved have been possible due to great teamwork. We also implemented a few strategies for further improvements in the education sector as well as administration.

Our team of key leaders hhavee worked very hard towards the integration of the Victorian and National curriculums. Policies and procedures have been reviewed and updated which is mandatory as well as being an ongoing process. I thank all my dedicated staff for working

together relentlessly throughout the year. The College also introduced an online prroject management system to enhance communication between the staff. During the year, we focused intensively on upskilling staff with many professional development programs.

The good news is, with the expansion of the College to include 229 Sayers Road we look forward to opening the dedicated secondary girls building early in 2017. When completed it will be a modern and self-contained modular building with its own science labs, food technology room, canteen and landscaped gardens.

Overseas Visit to ChinaDuring the term holidays, we had the opportunity to visit Kunming - also called the Spring City due to its weather - in the Province of Yunnan, China. We managed to visit the Lojie Mosque which is approximately 150 years, established in 627AD by Sa’d ibd Abi Waqqas. The Grand Mosque of Shadian was a great experience, covering an area of 17,708 square meters with two 93 meter high towers. Our tour guide took us to education institutes, where most of their teachers gained their degrees from the Middle East or Malaysia and spoke fluent Arabic. We were informed that their students memorised Quran within three years which was surprising but admirable to achieve. The amazing Stone Forest was another beautiful place we visited.

We extended our visit to Da Nang City in Vietnam before heading back to Melbourne. The trip was educational as well as entertaining.

Visitors to the CollegeThe College hosted the visit of Imam Sheikh Ibrahim Abu Mohamed, the Grand Mufti of Australia on Friday 19 February. He thanked the staff of College for being active in the teaching of Holy Quran and Islamic Studies to students, and for holding a Quran Competition for the past 14 years. In addition to the memorisation, khutbah, azan and pubic speaking in Arabic, the College has also initiated new classes for tahfiz and recitation which was received well by our families of the College.

On 3 March, we had guests from two Malaysian universities. They were representatives were from the Management and Science University and the Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), Alamiyyah - International Centre. The universities offer various academic programs for undergraduates and were sourcing out the possibility of working in partnership. We were invited to visit their campuses in Malayisa.

On 12 March, a group of 12 students and two teachers from our sister school, YIISI, arrived at our College as part of an annual two week study tour. Along with them, arriving at the same time, were representatives from SMP IT Al Haraki (Indonesia). They expressed in sending their students here for the Immersion Program which was welcomed.

Islamic Schools Visit

On 2 September, we hosted a visit of four Islamic schools to our College which included AIA, Al-Sirat, Ilim and Minaret. The purpose was to share educational experiences, compare notes and unify the systems between us. It was a very engaging and fruitful meeting and I highly recommend that the group meets regularly. Thank you to all the participant

Open DayOn Saturday 3 September our first dedicated Open Day was held. We had many new families visit us with our staff and many student volunteers showcasing our facilities, programs and curriculum. Open Day was a great success and I thank the community in the region for their continuous support. We hope to continue this program on an annual basis.

EId Fitr and Eid Adha - Community Event

Eid Fitr was held during the school holidays on 6 July and Eid Adha celebrated on 12 September. Both Eids were celebrated with Jemaah prayers performed at the Al-Taqwa Masjid. Myself along with a handful of staff and students, enjoyed Iftar dinner at the AFP with the Commissioner of Police.

Fete DayThe College Fete was held on Saturday 8 October, which again was very successful. Without fail we again hosted a bumper crowd. There were many more stalls and rides including fun activities for the children and families.

VCE GraduationThe VCE Graduation evening was celebrated by the graduating class of 2016 at the Grand Star Reception Centre on 23 November.

The graduation is noted as one of the most important and exciting events of the College and it was an evening where parents were proud to have witnessed the outcome of their duties and efforts of upbringing their child to complete their 13 years of schooling. The program highlights included speeches and award presentations. There were motivating and inspiring speeches from Sheikh Abdel Azeem, School Imam; Mr Hallak, Principal; Marwa Houli, Head of Year 11-12; and Ms Yarra Bakri, VCE/VASS Coordinator. Last but not least, a lovely speech confidently delivered by both Abdulatif Omar and Zahra Ali Mohammad, our Year 12 representatives. All speeches focused on similar direction underpinning the Islamic values - care and respect. Graduates were advised to grasp opportunities and be prepared to face the challenges in their lives ahead.

Ms Marwa Houli and Mr Stefanos Chrisoulis, MCs for the night, worked though the program professionally. My heartfelt thanks to all speakers and participants for their articulate effort leading up to and on the night.

Parents and guests who attended the event were happy to see their children graduating after seven years in primary school and moving to Year 7. I wish them all the best in their next academic level.

I conclude with thanks to members of the Trust, my education and administration staff for their dedication and accomplishments during 2016. Last but not least my gratitude for all the parents and guardians for their support and cooperation to the College.

Commissioner’s Morning Tea

The Commissioner’s Morning Tea was organised by the AFP Community Liaison Team on 10 October at the Leopard Lodge, Melbourne Zoo. Our school Imam, Sheikh Abdel Azeim and I attended. It was a great function which afforded us the opportunity to mingle with the Commissioner and other community members.

This year we had the Victorian Police staff member delivered a discussion program entitled “Think U Know” (cyber safety seminar) on Monday 5 September. I thank them for their involvement and precious time to us. Our students learned a valuable knowledge and awareness from this seminar and we are hopeful to have continued services from the Police. Wishing everyone all the best for next year!

Student LetterThank you for the opportunity of allowing me to be the School Captain of Al-Taqwa College in 2016. It has been an honour to represent the school. I cannot thank you enough for everything you have taught me. All the smiles, the cries and meetings were worth it. After this experience, and after my time at Al-Taqwa I leave, not just as a girl, but as a woman with leadership qualities that I have learnt here from you. This school is growing and getting better as the years go by. InshaAllah I will be back in a few years time to teach here at your school.

Thank you so much, I could never leave on a happier ending then I did this year.

An entourage of ten delegates from Al-Taqwa College travelled this year to Yunnan Province in south – eastern China to visit schools and a university that not unlike itself in Truganina, western Melbourne offer quality intensive studies for Muslim students. The delegation consisted of Principal Mr Omar Hallak, key education and administration leaders.

It was revealing to learn that this region has more than 40 million Chinese Muslims, hundreds of mosques located in regional cities and towns, and in those the delegation had opportunity to visit, mosques were impeccable in their presentation, dignified and serene, and attended by polite and helpful locals and travellers alike. The calmness and orderliness of the schools were equally impressive.

‘A major interest centred on the teaching of languages (first language Chinese speakers studying both Arabic and English as additional languages), and Islamic Studies, including values, and memorisation of the Quran. Discussions with students and staff generated more questions than answers as reciprocal fascination and curiosity grew between the Chinese and Australian delegations. The visits also succeeded in building valuable partnership and goodwill, and a strong desire for more intercultural school initiatives that foster Islamic values be invited and supported for students and educators both here and in Yunnan.

The college has already established its own campus in Sentul, Indonesia and intends strengthening healthy intercultural educational partnerships within our global neighbourhood.

Our team visited quite a number of interesting places like the mosques in Kunming which was built a long time ago and they were in Chinese intricate architecture. The tour included the famous philosopher,

Confucious who held lectures with his students in the Confucious Garden/ Sanctuary/Stone Forest.

We also had the opportunity to see the well-known and astounding iconic Dragon Bridge, Linh Yung temple and Hoi An town and Da Nang market in Vietnam.

Al-Taqwa College not only provides our students with a high level of education, it also promotes our Islamic values and beliefs so that our students are encouraged to become the next generation of proud Australian Muslims.

My role at Al-Taqwa College (with the support of my administration staff), is to ensure we assist the teaching staff in delivering exceptional resources they require to help deliver their curriculum. This includes purchasing Hybrid Tablets for both the primary and secondary students and providing all staff the opportunity of Professional Development.

With the budget in mind, we ensured that we did not forget our junior students who were able to put a smile on their faces with the development of our new playground areas to provide them an opportunity to unwind between classes.

I have also worked with my team to establish a budget for future developments of the College such as the 229 Sayers Road project of building a new Secondary Girls Building and a sporting complex that may be converted as a hall for special occasions. This will provide students with improved sporting facilities especially during extreme weather.

Please find below an outline of our expenditure throughout the year which highlights where your school fees have been allocated. Keeping this in mind, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents who paid their school fees on time ensuring our students are provided with the best education and care.

The total expenditure for the 2016 year was approximately $10 million which included the new girls building at 229 Sayers Road. Not only were the buildings covered under the cost, but also all the furnishings to allow students an easy transition for their new location.

Expenses for 2017-2019 will include a multipurpose hall upgrade, general renovations, a new carpark, sports ovals, and general maintenance. A very exciting new venture will also include an Early Learning Centre. The budget allocated for 2017-19 will be approximately $13 million this shows where your school fees are allocated. Keeping this in mind, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents who pay their school fees on time ensuring that our students are provided with the best education and facilities.

The 2016 College year has been a very busy and exciting year for the Human Resources/Health & Safety Department. Our dedicated team have received many positive comments, compliments and thanks for their work across all Departments and their support to staff, students and families. The team are devoted to doing their best and have been involved this year in many projects, daily operational requirements, activities and events always striving to achieve the best outcomes. All the team are people safety and wellbeing focused and this is a blessing for our College, mashaAllah.

Thanks to Feda Hassan, Andrew McGovern, Roslyn Nasir, Wendy Dicks.

The Counselling & Welfare Department has been part of the College for 10 years and has a central role in supporting our students’ emotional and mental wellbeing. There are currently four counsellors at the College; Lucy Verwey, Ruqaya Almirgani, Maha Saleh and Naazia Syed. It was a sad farewell to Ibrahim Abdel-Hafiz in term 2 as he moved on from his role as a counsellor at the College. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

The counsellors provide individual counselling and support to students for a range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, bullying, anger issues, interpersonal problems, and other life stressors. The counsellors also deliver a range of programs and initiatives throughout the school.

It was another eventful year in 2016 for the Counselling & Welfare Department. The Department continued to have an active role in both the primary and secondary schools. Stress management programs were provided to our VCE students. The counsellors delivered a transition program for the year 7 students during term 1. MPower was provided for the Year 7 girls and MN8 for the Year 7 boys. These programs focused on developing social skills, empathy, conflict resolution, and strength-based training. The Counsellors also delivered programs for the upper primary students to help them develop resilience and coping skills. Additionally, the Counsellors engaged parents during seminars each term, which were a great success and were well attended by parents. Key topics included

internet safety, child safety and supporting children who have experienced bullying.

This year the Department was also actively involved in implementing the state government’s new Child Safe Standards. These Standards ensure that the school upholds every child’s right to feel safe and be safe, at all times. The Standards involve increased student involvement and empowerment in their sense of safety. A key focus is to empower our students to have an active role in creating an environment at school where they feel safe.

The Department continued to introduce the new KidsMatter initiative, which focused on promoting a positive school community, engaging parents and families, implementing social and emotional learning, and providing focused assistance for students in need. The initial phases of the program involved training for teachers. A ‘Smile Campaign’ was introduced in term 4 as part of the KidsMatter initiative, which was positive, heart-warming, and loads of fun! We look forward to continuing with this campaign, and other projects, in 2017.

2016 has had more staff changes to the Nursing Department. Roslyn Nasir joined Lisa at the beginning of the year, then Lisa moved on to pursue further nursing studies. Wendy Dicks then joined the team.

It has been a busy year and part of that has been building up a good team spirit and providing a caring space for healing of different kinds. Together we are working our way through bringing up to date expired action plans; keeping staff up to date with government regulations on Anaphylaxis; and providing information and education at College events like Open Day and the Fete.

We would like to thank the cooperation of families in response to hair lice management and the viral gastro-enteritis outbreak. I N F O R M A T I O N

In 2016 we had a new e-learning team which consisted of 4 eLearning coordinators and 2 IT coordinators for primary and secondary school. The main aim of the team is to provide guidance to both students and teachers on how to improve the use of technology in teaching and learning and come up with a Virtual Learning Environment solution for the school.

The team provided training for students and teachers on how to utilise their electronic device safely and efficiently as well as investigate different eLearning platforms for teachers to deliver the subject/class materials.

The team investigated a few Learning Management Systems (LMS) that can be used in our school environment. In term 4 we started LMS trials and will pilot the program in 2017. The LMS will increase student learning engagement, facilitate better student learning outcomes, collaboration between teachers and better communication between students, teachers and parents.

Another exciting thing that happened in 2016 was that we purchased a new module called MyDetails and Excursions which will be implemented in 2017. With these modules, parents will have the ability to update personal information for both themselves and their children including medical information, and give consent to participate in school approved activities such as excursion, incursions, sports and camps electronically.

It has been another very busy year at the Al-Taqwa College Library. We have had fun and informative activities took place all year round, doing our very best to meet teacher and student needs to promote a culture of reading, as well as raise levels of information literacy.

During May, we hosted the monster themed Scholastic Book Fair. Not only was May the National Family Reading Month, but Library and Information Week also occurred during the first week of our Fair. We certainly aimed and achieved to have lots of kids reading more in May!

To inspire young Muslims to read, we jointly facilitated the Ali Gator Book Fair during June, with the Primary Arabic and Islamic Departments. The timing was perfect during Ramadan and helped everyone think and learn more about good deeds and values with specialised inspirational children’s books on topics including respect, fasting, prayer, helping others, sharing and learning Arabic. The school community also had access to decorations, cards, handcrafted prayer mats and games to help prepare for and celebrate the upcoming Eid and Hajj.

From March to September we assisted students in finding, choosing and reading more books for the Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge. Congratulations to all the students who joined in and received a Certificate of Achievement from the Premier of Victoria.

We are very proud of you!Children’s Book Week was from 22-26 August. It was a wonderful week all about ‘Australia: Story Country’ and of course books and reading. This theme enabled us to have special displays of foods, Aussie icons, the beach, bush as well as the Book of the Year Shortlisted stories which were nominated for the Book of the Year awards.

Activities that worked well, were all about Aboriginal art and animals, Australian states, capital cities, landmarks, icons, emblems, famous Australians and international flags and costumes. The library was a very colourful, eye catching and educational place. Lots of prizes were won by hard working and excited students.

We also held a Scholastic Book Fair stall at the Fete in October. Every book sold at our fairs earned us free books for the library, meaning more new titles by favourite authors.

We sincerely thank all staff, teachers, students, parents and families for their support throughout the year. There is nothing we love more than seeing the smiles on students faces when they visit the library, relax, enjoy and read stories all by themselves, with their friends, teachers, classmates, brothers and sisters.

The Olive Branch Campus continued to open its door as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) delivering the Vocational Education and Training (VET) Program Certificate II in Horticulture, which is being continually improved and updated. Our RTO compliance against the AQTF standards was constantly updated to keep up with the new changes throughout the year. Staff qualifications as trainers and assessors were also regularly updated through training and workshops to keep abreast with the changes in the industry.

In addition to the Certificate II in Horticulture Course, the Olive Branch Campus also continued to provide its facilities for the Year 7 to 10 students who took up Environmental Science (Horticulture) and Woodwork as their elective subjects. Students undergoing Horticulture electives, were exposed to the introductory overview of the Certificate II in the Horticulture Program which was offered as a VCE/VET subject to Year 10 to 12 students. The Woodwork elective on the other hand, provided the students with workshop facilities for them to design and build various models and projects, which allowed them to acquire the hands-on experience with tools and equipment within the field.

The Woodwork program has been going along very well with great feedback from the students in year 7 through to year 10. We hope to be running a VCE Vet program for the start of 2018.We have also been involved in the construction of the Eco Farm at the rear of the school, this is being built by the VCAL students as part of the Woodwork and Horticulture courses.

As in former years, the Olive Branch Campus was actively involved in Fete Day where we sold most of our stock of plants and all of our vegetables, which were freshly grown and harvested prior to the event.

Our vegetables such as hydroponic lettuces and strawberries, silverbeet, leeks, spring onions and chilli plants were indeed very popular amongst the community. Ornamental plants like Bottlebrushes, Aeonium sp. (succulents), Dietes and Flax plants, vegetatively propagated in the nursery, were also put up for sale. In addition, students' work of seedlings and plant cuttings were also sold.

As an RTO, the Olive Branch Campus has a solid foundation for growth and development. With teamwork and support from all, we aspire to further expand the Campus into new areas and to develop it as one of the best institutions in the educational milieu within the region.

What makes ATC stand out from the rest! Is it perhaps because we have the best staff, the best facilities or the best special needs Department, yes, all of the above!! and what defines us even more is the support we have in place for our students with learning difficulties.

We are placed on this earth to be kind to all of Allah’s creations to show mercy to them and to treat them with respect, not in a way that makes them feel repulsed. Having a child with learning difficulties can cause a lot of emotional stress for parents, but gone are the days where the child is tucked away in a different class.

ATC is an inclusive school which tailors the needs of the child. Your child is the most important person in this equation and they have access to all the members of this team.

At ATC we celebrate successes and 2016 was yet another year to remember! We held professional developments so that staff could be empowered in their skills, we showcased our Department at the school open day, we held a survey for parents and staff feedback so that we can improve on our weaknesses. We held lunch club activities which provided the students a haven in a calm and relaxed, yet fun environment.

We had open, constructive dialogue with parents throughout the year to ensure the needs of the child are paramount and creative solutions were met. We strongly believe in ongoing open communication with parents as you are the best advocate for your child.

This year we also welcomed three amazing, passionate and enthusiastic new members. We are proud to mention, which also sets us above the rest, are our two full time speech pathologists, Maymuna and Cagri. We also have our passionate and caring integration aide, Shahina, who joined us this year, as well as Siyadha and Sartaj who are both invaluable to this Department. The success of this Department can be attributed to the hard work and dedication of the team as well as the support of the principal, admin, staff and of course, the parents of our lovely school - A huge thank you and remember at ATC, we will be a voice for your child!

This is our first year working at Al-Taqwa College and what an amazing year it was!

The first few verses of Holy Qur’an that were revealed to our Holy Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) mention the importance of reading, pen, and teaching for human beings.

It is very important to learn in Islam, we need to keep in mind that not all of us learn in the same way. As Speech Pathologists, our role is to ensure that students who struggle to keep up with academic demands receive the extra support they need and deserve. As Speech Pathologists we often get asked if we only work with students with speech difficulties and the answer is no. At Al-Taqwa College, we work with students who have the following difficulties as well.

• Speech: students who have difficulty producing sounds (eg TAT instead of CAT).

• Language.

• Receptive: students who have difficulty understanding written and oral information.

• Expressive: students who have difficulty with explaining themselves in grammatically correct sentences.

• Fluency: students who stutter.

• Voice: students who have problems projecting their voice.

• Literacy: students who have difficulty with spelling and reading.

• This year we introduced the following to the Speech Pathology Department at Al-Taqwa:

• Social skills groups.

• Literacy groups.

• Articulation groups.

• Multi-lit: a program designed to improve letter to sound identification, which in turn enhances reading accuracy, fluency, and also spelling.

We are fortunate to be working within the Al-Taqwa community as all staff and parents contributed to make this year a success for all. Please do not hesitate to contact us for any further questions. We have many new ideas to implement in the year to come inshaAllah, and are looking forward to another amazing year.

What an exciting and engaging year this was! The Extracurricular Department was on its feet organising activities which involved rich student engagement and pathways which allowed students to showcase their talents and skills.

We began the school year with the student leadership program. This was whole school approach and students were given the opportunity to vote for their school leaders and captains. This captaincy program enriched our students with essential leadership skills and ensured their voices would be heard throughout the year.

During Ramadan, secondary took on the initiative of the Food Drive Program which was adopted from the Primary Islamic Department. The main aim of the Food Drive was to give to those who are less fortunate. It was incredibly exciting and rewarding having the whole school involved and the students were flocking in to hand over their donated food items. This Program was extremely successful, not only were our students engaged, it went hand in hand with our Islamic morals and values. Al-Taqwa managed to donate food parcels to more than 100 needy families during the blessed time of Ramadan.

The Extracurricular Activities Committee was involved with many different events and initiatives in the school. This year the Events and Performance Committee was jam-packed with exciting events such as the Al-Taqwa Fete, Harmony Day and Vision Night. The Committee successfully helped organise and run integral parts of these wonderful events.

The Marketing Committee this year was involved in Al-Taqwa’s first ever Open Day and which was a complete success. The Committee helped to organise staff volunteers for the day as well as assist with the set up and organisation of the tours and stall set up. The Marketing Committee also ventured out to Pacific Werribee to promote Al-Taqwa College to the local community. Staff volunteered their Saturday to meet and chat with both Muslim and non-Muslim members of the community about our educational curriculum, school initiatives and, of course, our extracurricular program. This year, the Class Setup Committee also worked on class arrangements and the physical structure of classrooms in the secondary school. Islamic posters and Hadeeths were posted up on the bulletin boards as well as many other motivational displays.

On Behalf of Nafees Sultana and myself, I would like to send a big thank you to all our Foundation and Grade 1 teachers and students for all that they have done to make 2016 a huge success.

This year, our Foundation students began the year with a very smooth transition from Kinder to Primary School. Students were very settled and ready to learn. Our team of teachers and teacher aids worked diligently to improve fine motor skills, alphabet letter/sound recognition and number skills.

This continued for the remainder of the year as we saw our little Foundation students blossom into confident learners and friends.

We worked our way through a series of units and events in the 2016 calender, activities such as Harmony Day, Hajj Day, Book Character Dress Up Day, Road Safety, The Sea and The Farm which was accompanied by a trip to a farm. A really fun day out for our students and teachers.

We were very pleased with the social and academic development of our students as they make the transition to grade 1 in 2017. Our lovely Grade 1 students and teachers have also had a fantastic year at school. As they continued their journey from Foundation to Grade 1, our students worked their way to being ready for Grade 2. Students have shown success in reading, writing and on developing their social skills on making friendships and implementing the school values. It has been an absolute pleasure working in the Foundation and Grade 1 Department.

We look forward to welcoming a new group of students in the Foundation Department next year. We look forward to continuing to work with our Foundation students as they extend their learning and development at Grade 1 level.

We also look forward to seeing our Grade 1 students expand their wings and fly off into Grade 2. Most of all, we look forward to continue working with a fantastic team of Foundation/Grade 1 teachers who are so enthusiastic, passionate and dedicated to meeting the needs of our students.

What a year 2016 has been; an exciting, fun filled year with heaps of engaging activities to get students ready for next year.

Term 1 began with an exciting, Toy Story Incursion where students investigated Australia’s heritage. They were presented with vital information on the old day’s toys, dresses, lifestyles and food compared to present days. It was a real fun experience for students as they had a chance to dress up and learn how to use some old equipment during those times.

Term 2 began with another exciting IMAX excursion, which offered a powerful teaching tool that was easily integrated into the Science unit and focused on a broad range of learning areas. With Ramadan around this time, students were fully engaged in many fun activities with heaps of prizes given away.

Term 3 was the most exciting of all with students coming to school still in the Eid festive mood. Starting with our favourite, Swimming Program followed by the awesome 12 day Chick Hatching Education Program, where students had first-hand experience learning about the life cycle of chickens. Students also investigated the life cycle of a butterfly through breeding our own butterflies.

Our students were fully engaged during Book Week and Literacy Week with many exciting activities. We had our thrilling literacy parade with excellent participation for the Character Dress Up Day, where lots of students and all of our teachers were dressed up as characters from their favorite books.

Our Primary School also celebrated the Rio Olympics 2016 with students and staff coming with vibrant flags, colourful costumes with entertaining cheers in support of different countries. It was so pleasing to see all the children participating and enjoying themselves! Last but not least, during our grand Islamic Week cum Art Week, students had a chance to be part of recreating famous mosques around the world on canvas. The month of Dhul Hijjah got students engaging in imitating those practices at school. What an enlightening experience it was!

The Grade 2 teachers wish all the students a wonderful learning journey and to continue to work in Grade 3 next year.

How quickly the year has gone! 2016 has been a busy and productive year for all the Grade 3’s.

During Term 1 the students learnt about Aboriginal Culture and their contribution to the local community. The students visited CERES Environmental Park where they learnt the importance of the environment within the Aboriginal Culture. Students were involved in storytelling, face painting and learnt about native plants.

Term 2 was engaging as students were busy preparing for NAPLAN. However, it was also fun when Professor Bunsen came to show the students lots of dazzling and amazing experiments as part of the States of Matter topic. As Ramadan approached, students went into the festive mood with heaps of engaging activities to remind them of the significance of fasting.

Term 3 was extremely busy. The students learnt about Earth in Space and Living Creatures, as well as acknowledging the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. All the students supported their teammates enthusiastically during the Olympic Parade. As part of Science Week, the students made solar-system models and did science experiments. The Grade 3’s were voted the best experimenters by the judges. Wow!

The students were also involved in the Active Kids Program where they learnt cricket and tennis skills. As part of our environment topic, in partnership with the Wyndham Council, students celebrated National Tree Day and learnt about the importance of recycling with a trip to Serendip Sanctuary. Literacy and Numeracy Week was full of enjoyment with everyone dressing up as their favourite story characters. Students also enjoyed many other activities such as Book Swap Day, Reading with a Buddy, Library Activities and fun with orienteering and Lego construction.

There was still a lot of learning to do in Term 4 as we prepared for 2017. The students learnt about Australia and its neighbours. They also found out about different climates and landscapes. GymSkool was fun, as they got to do energetic activities.

What an eventful year! Well done to all the students. They have all worked very hard this year. The teachers of Grade 3 wish them all the success for the future.

G R A D E S 4 - 6Horse RidingAs this academic year draws to an end, it has certainly

left many experiences for our students and staff to reflect upon. It was a year in which relationships were built, bonds were formed and friendships were shaped. A year that unlocked much talent, opened the doors of opportunity and stretched many minds. Omar Ibn Al Khattab (RAA) said “Acquire knowledge and learn tranquillity and dignity.” So while it is important to educate the minds of our students, this year we certainly did not forget that it is equally important to educate their hearts.

Student wellbeing was at the forefront of our student programs for 2016. Throughout the year our students opened up and shared their thoughts and feelings about different matters that concerned them and other students during weekly circle time programs. Grade 4 students were involved in team building activities at Taskworks which allowed them to acquire skills necessary to help them become productive team members. Grade 5 students had the chance to bond with peers and teachers on a more personal level at Camp Coorong. While grade 6 students established pen pals with students from Wonthaggi Primary School and were lucky to meet their pen pals in term 4 and practice their daawah skills by talking to their pen pals about what Islam is truly about and representing Islam through their outstanding character and conduct.

In 2016, our Student Representative Council (SRCs) attended leadership training sessions that helped them become more involved in school activities, allowed them to be more involved in the daily running of the Department and opened up opportunities for them to implement more innovative programs to involve more students. School captains also presented their progress and activities to the school board on a monthly basis and often shared their ideas and programs with upper primary students during weekly morning assemblies.

Students are guided to become self-directed, critical and creative learners engaging themselves in many different platforms of eLearning activities and developing 21st century skills such as researching and problem-solving. Al-Taqwa College has invested in tablets for upper primary and ipads for lower primary students and teachers.

Throughout the year, primary teachers received training on how to use different eLearning platforms such as Purple Mash, Padlet, Weebly, Wix and many more. Primary teachers also created Web Quests related to student Humanities and Science Units with an inquiry-oriented focus.

Throughout the 2016 academic year, primary students engaged in safe online research and used critical and creative thinking to solve interesting eLearning tasks. Platforms such as Padlet allowed students to enjoy

and participate in learning through games, reflective learning, collaborate on case studies, present ideas in writing classes and publish final writing pieces using a range of Apps.

Next year, the school eLearning team in collaboration with the IT team, will be introducing a learning management system. Teachers will commence a pilot of the program in 2016 to create web pages for the different primary year levels. Furthermore, this learning system will also allow students to submit homework or assignment online and parents to view different material related to their child’s school experience. We look forward to this new venture to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Students from all year levels in upper primary put together amazing and creative Science pieces during Science week this year; from sustainable villages that used renewable energy to recyclable art pieces that were truly unique.

Memorable highlights experienced by our upper primary students this year included Al-Taqwa’s first ever Iftar night during the Holy month of Ramadan and a visit by our Grade 6 students to the Nation’s capital, Canberra. Students who attended this tour were the first ever group of students from Al-Taqwa College to go on an interstate camp which was organised to provide our students with real life experiences related to their History/Civics and Citizenship unit on Federation and Migrants. Our grade 5 students on the other hand, experienced the excitement of horse riding on their three day training program held at Saddle On, where they also got to showcase their skills in archery and bike riding.

Since 2016 was a year that coincided with the Olympics, students took part in their very own Al-Taqwa Olympic Opening Ceremony, which was opened with a special Olympic song written and sung by our very own “Lahme squad”, whereby all classes got to represent a country and take part in a friendly tournament, where money raised was donated to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

This year’s Book Week and Literacy Week was definitely an event to remember, not only did students get to parade their favourite book characters but they were also introduced to our very special guest speaker Eugenia Flynn (Indigenous Muslim Writer/Arts Worker) who spoke to our students about the importance of writing about characters that reflect who they were as Australian Muslims. Our Grade 5 and 6 students also delved deeper into the history of Muslims in Australia dating back from the days of the Cameleers with a session with Brother Abdul Shaheed, which reinforced their identities as being Australian Muslims and developing a sense of pride about their contributions our forefathers have made to the nation.

One of our more special moments shared this year with our students was the grade 5 student and Mother Bonding Session. It was wonderful to see all participants eager to take part in the quizzes, have a laugh and join in on the fun whilst at the same time building a stronger parent/teacher bond at our College. On a final note, the adventure of life is to learn and learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere. More than often we find that students we are trying to inspire are often the ones that end up inspiring us. So for our inspiring Al-Taqwa students, we would like to wish you all a great and prosperous 2017 and in particular our grade 6 students as they embark on their high school years.

Primary Physical Education in 2016 had the students continuing to learn new skills and improve their existing ones. Grades Foundation to 4 participated in Gymschool, learning a variety of gymnastics skills. Grades 3 and 4 having the Active Kids program, with external coaches come in to teach them different sports. Grade 5's also had a similar program as part of Sporting Schools.

All year levels once again participated in Jump Rope for Heart, learning new skipping skills and the importance of a healthy lifestyle, as well as raising money for the Heart Foundation, this year once again raising over $1000.

Grades 4-6 once again participated in the Truganina District Athletics and Cross Country, all the students who participated had a great time and we were proud to see them all trying their best and supporting each other the whole day. We were proud to have two students qualify to progress to the Wyndham Division finals; Cross Country saw Abdullahi Urushi (6E) finishing in the top 10, and Track and Field saw Mohammed ElKurdi (6D) qualify fastest in the 100m and long jump. While the Division track and field finals were cancelled due to poor weather, Mohammed had the fastest 100m time in his age group across the division and this qualified him into the Western Metropolitan Regional Finals. Both these boys did a fantastic job at representing Al-Taqwa at the next level.

Grade 6 students again participated in Interschool Sport, all students participated during terms 1 and 2 in basketball, tee ball, cricket, soccer, tennis, volley ball, netball, AFL and softball. The students played well against different schools within the district each week. We had success with our boys Soccer team finishing on top of the ladder within the District, playing in the Division final and winning their way through to the Western Region Final, where they played some tough matches but were outplayed on the day.

This year saw the first opportunity for our grade 6 boys to participate in the Bachar Houli Cup. This tournament in the past has only been available to secondary students. While the boys showed some inexperience compared to the other schools, they all played with great determination and most of all enjoyed themselves.

We look forward continuing to improve and compete again in coming years.

This year, Al-Taqwa launched its first Media and Debating Program targeting students from Upper Primary. These students took part in learning technical production skills with the goal of becoming active media performers. Al-Taqwa’s Media group were introduced to the production process including scripting, acting, directing and working behind the scenes. The group also worked together in small teams to prepare and rehearse scenes which were filmed using a green screen by our school’s Media Coordinator, Pongky Naatatmaja. Our Media gurus also had the opportunity to take part in the Media Roadshow Workshop incursion which further developed key media skills such as filming and editing.

Our talented students decided it was time to put their skills into practise and successively produced their own news cast called – ‘Al-Taqwa Now’. This student news report is uploaded on our school website and covers key school events, classroom learning as well as teacher and student interviews with the added twist of humour to entertain their audience.

In 2016, the Al-Taqwa upper primary debating team had many highlights. Debating allowed our students to build on skills from every avenue, from public speaking and

forming persuasive arguments to researching, writing and developing persuasive techniques, just to name a few. In other words, our students were well equipped and ready to do whatever it took to ultimately win an argument.

Our debaters took part in the Fitzroy Regional Debating Day where they were actively involved in a day of debating matches with other schools. The results of the day proved that hard work pays off with a three debate winning streak. Students continued their achievements by taking part in an internal debate, addressing current hot topics related to vaccinations and learning a second language. Students had us baffled with their strong arguments and persuasive delivery. The amount of time and dedication the debaters put into forming their arguments and presenting their speeches was evident.

Al-Taqwa College indeed has talented and creative students and we are happy to have been a part of developing and nurturing these talents. Congratulations to all the lovely media and debating students. Looking forward to some more amazing challenges for 2017.

Thank you

2016 was a very successful year for the Primary Art Department.

This year we expanded to open a second art room. This enabled all primary year levels to participate in specialist art classes.

We also welcomed two new art teachers to the Department, Ms Vicky who was our lovely Foundation and Grade 1 art teacher this year. Students completed activities in visual arts that developed fine motor skills. Students then worked on painting, drawing and craft activities that were based on literacy themes and integrated studies topics.

Our talented and energetic Ms Antonella taught year 2-6 classes. Ms Antonella also worked with our talented students to produce some amazing artwork based on topics such as Meet the Masters, Islamic Art and Ramadan.

We are look forward to developing our Art Program even further in 2017 by introducing performing arts, media and music components to the Program.Thank you to our teaching staff and very talented students for working together this year.

InshaAllah we can continue working together to achieve greater success in 2017.

The year 2016 was very productive and exciting for all our primary students with the implementation of the new Digital Technologies curriculum. The interesting information about this subject from the Australian curriculum this year, is that it is a core subject under the name Technologies and it is mandatory for all schools to implement by 2017. We at Al-Taqwa trialled the new curriculum with new resources and great confidence, now we are ready to go ahead with full implementation next year.

The Australian Curriculum - Technologies describes two distinct but related subjects:

• Design and Technologies, in which students use design thinking and technologies to generate and produce designed solutions for authentic needs and opportunities.

• Digital Technologies, in which students use computational thinking and information systems to define, design and implement digital solutions.

• As in previous years, we aimed to be innovative in our teaching approach and implemented the most exciting programs such as - coding clubs, web quests and class blogs along with our previous robotics program to promote coding skills and eLearning.

• Throughout the year the primary students were involved in various activities which were related to the digital technologies curriculum.

• As part of the safety and well-being programs for our students, they were made aware of:

• the guidelines for the safe and responsible use of ICT equipment and the Internet.

• the consequences of breaking the rules by signing the ICT user agreement forms.

We look forward to implementing more exciting programs in the year 2017.

It has been another wonderfully rich year in the Primary Arabic, Quran and Religion Department at Al-Taqwa College! The Department has grown and continued to give our students a high quality Islamic education. There have been many successful activities, initiatives and programs taking place across all year levels in the Primary Department.

2016 was the first year we introduced the Hifz and Dawah Programs to our school. The Hifz Program provided selected students with intense classes to memorise the Quran. The Program has been a huge success due to the structure of the lessons and the commitment of both the teachers and students. The Dawah Program, also commenced this year, providing a selection of upper primary students with the opportunity to develop their knowledge of Islam, spoken skills and their manner of presenting. Students in the Program have written, researched and presented Friday khutba to their fellow peers.

Throughout the year, morning Quran and afternoon Arabic classes continued to run with increasing demand. All students received support to further their Arabic or Quranic education – in addition to their regular class lessons.

Ramadan this year was full of activities and fun in the primary school. The major project for Ramadan for 2016 was the Masjid Art Competition which each class took part in. Classes created a Masjid art piece on canvas to present to the school. These art pieces were

absolutely beautiful, with each one researched and put together by students and teachers. In addition, during Ramadan the Department held a daily quiz for students. Sadaqa was also given to the Royal Children’s Hospital again this year. We managed to raise $2000 – which was more than last year’s fundraising effort. This was delivered to the Royal Children’s Hospital by Mrs Assafiri and a group of upper primary students. The annual Quran Competition was another successful and enriching experience for all involved. Students were trained to prepare for the event, which not only showcased our student’s commitment to learning Quran, but to the teachers who supported them throughout the process.

In Term 4, the primary school celebrated Arabic, Quran and Religion Week. We held activities during class time, exciting assemblies were filled with fun displays and a program which included blindfolded taste testing, celebrity head and prayer mat making. This was a real celebration for the Department!

This year, we again enjoyed a visit from Point Cook College to the Al-Taqwa Masjid. The visit was rewarding and positive for all involved. Our teachers and students showed the visitors through the masjid and answered questions they had regarding our religion. The Point Cook College students asked many questions and were keen to learn about Islam.

Heading into 2017, Al-Taqwa College will continue to move with the Victorian Curriculum. Our teachers use this curriculum to plan their units and lessons in a manner which responds to our students’ educational needs and interests. Alongside the commitment of our Arabic teachers, the Victorian Curriculum will continue to ensure that our school is consistently at the forefront of best practice.

I sincerely thank our students, dedicated teachers and parents for their hard work this year. We look forward to another successful year in 2017, where we can continue to grow and nurture our young Islamic students.

2016 at Al-Taqwa has been an incredible year of growth, development, change and the pursuit of excellence. This year has been a huge learning curve for me at the College, learning to play a part in College management, helping to formulate school policies and strategic planning. Ultimately promoting happy and positive relationships within the school and our community.

Highlights for the year have been the activities and presentations from our subject weeks. We have extremely talented scientists in the making, mathematicians, poets and creative artists to name some of the talents. Our students have been given many opportunities to excel in the area of sport, through the Bachar Houli Cup and interschool competitions.

Moving forward with technology, laptops are here to stay, with greater understanding of the educational benefits of engaging their use in the classroom and

home. Greater use of eBooks and the introduction of Digitech next year are much to look forward to. Part of our mission and ethos is focusing on the values of an Islamic education and incorporating them into a way of life as our students grow and mature into adults. Here at Al-Taqwa we work very hard to instil that yet we continually need your ongoing care and diligence. We are proud of our students who have undertaken leadership positions, leading the way in raising money for a good cause or coordinating activities for their peers.

We appreciate the hard work of all our staff and it is with this continued effort and dedication to teaching and learning that we strive for continued achievements in educations and wellbeing at Al-Taqwa in 2017.

Wafa TebeilehHead of Teacher and Student Services Years 7 and 8

The Year 7 & 8 Sub-school was very busy this year. With new structure comes new challenges. We had a lot of new enrolments in Year 7 & 8, which meant opening a new Year 7 girls’ classroom.

Our students went on camp this year to Camp Coorong. They engaged in many activities and had many outings. They explored Buchan Caves, went on a cruise to Lakes entrance, beach walks, canoeing, raft building, geocaching and indoor activities. In addition to the fun activities, they had a lot of Islamic talks, discussions and competitions.

Secondary department ran a few workshops for different year levels in conjunction with the Counselling department. Workshops included MPower girls for Year 7, MN8 for Year 7 boys. These programs tackle many teenage issues, such as peer pressure, bullying, self-esteem and many other issues. Year 7 & 8 had attended many Cyber-safety workshops delivered by AFP on the safe use of the internet, and the dangers of Cyberbullying. We also had weekly inspirational talks by Brother Abu Hamza.

A group of Year 12 girls took it upon themselves to mentor year 7 & 8 girls, entering their classes, working with them as mediators and giving them advice on good Islamic conduct and sisterhood in Islam.

The Secondary Department had organised many excursions, incursions and different activities for students. Year 7 students had a science incursion, where students were actively engaged in all the experiments and the fun activities performed by the presenter. Our Science department have also conducted Science Fair for the first time. This fair was really successful and both primary students and Parents were invited to visit.

Our class captains and their vices, worked hard in leading their classes and maintaining the cleanliness of the school’s surroundings. They had regular meetings with extra-curricular activities coordinators for guidance and support.

Certain areas in the school had a face-lift. Year 8 Boys’ classrooms were renovated this year and the school’s main building corridor was painted.WE started having morning assemblies for Year 7 &8 girls, where students perform morning exercises, following the Arab proverb: “A healthy mind is from a healthy body.”

Accelerated program for both Maths and English had re-started this year. High achievers were withdrawn from their classes and were given a more challenging curriculum.

As every year, this year we hosted a group of students from our Sister school in Indonesia. They spent 2 weeks with our students, and went on a camping trip with their student mentors from Year 8.

Fundraising activities were a success this year and we raised money for the Cancer Council Victoria. Students were competing amongst themselves to raise more funds.

The Leadership Team have been attending many workshops on: Differentiating Leadership and Management, Conflict resolution and Difficult conversations. Our teacher also have been attending seminars on: Teaching students with ASD and ADHD, Anaphylaxis training, the Child Safe Standards and many more.

The Child Safe Standards are compulsory minimum standards for all Victorian schools, to ensure they are well prepared to protect children from abuse and neglect. For this reason, the SWD Team and School Head have worked extensively on updating the Behaviour management policy.

We are very proud of our students who had fared well in the Australian Mathematics competition. 4 students of ATC scored a DISTINCTION level award, with two students of Year 8 ‘Wajih Ibrahim’ and ‘Yousef Saeed’ scoring in the top 6% for Year 8 students in Australia. The College hosted a visit of four Islamic schools involving AIA, Al-Sirat, Ilim and Minaret. It was the beginning of an educational experience through sharing, comparing notes and unifying the system of each school.

As for 2017, many new electives will be introduced so students will have a variety of electives to choose from.Preparation is underway for the 2017 academic year and we are looking forward to moving to the new Girls’ Campus next year insha’Allah.

That was a glimpse of the activities that took place this year. We’ll continue to improve and explore new ideas and embark on new journeys. Wishing you all a safe restful holiday and looking forward to seeing you all in 2017 insha’Allah.

Our Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) said:

“Four things support the world: the learning of the wise, the justice of the great, the prayers of the good, and the valor of the brave.

To overcome evil with good is good, to resist evil by evil is evil.”

As a Year 9 and 10 sub-school Head this year, I was challenged every day to look at my students and ask myself, had I done my best to support all my students not only in their academic learning but more importantly in nurturing and guiding them to become good Muslims. As one of the biggest Islamic schools in Melbourne, Al-Taqwa College is in an enviable position but at the same time having the heavy responsibility of shaping the success of the future generations of our Muslim community through our students.

Students in Years 9 and 10 cope with many personal and social challenges – while still unsure of who they want to be. They are also coping with peer pressure such as bullying and teasing. These students are also at the stage of their development who are most likely to challenge authority as they want to become the in-crowd, even at times at the expense of their familial relationships. All these at the critical stage of their schooling where they can no longer cruise carefree as this is when they are expected to start thinking as mature adults about their future career and the kind of life they want to shape for themselves.

As an independent school our parents and community’s expectations are high. Gaining a high ATAR score is not the main reason for many parents sending their children to our school. However whether our students graduate to become learned, wise, just, steadfast in prayer and brave of heart as exemplified by our prophet is something that can only happened when the school leadership and its teachers forged effective partnerships with their students and their families. Parents are expected to take full ownership and responsibility of their children coupled with ‘unconditional love’.

I would also like to thank all our parents for their support given to the school and for responding so quickly to our requests in supporting your child’s education. My role as the Head of Years 9 and 10 would not have been possible without your support and cooperation.

As Head of Year 9 and 10 this year I have discovered that what separates the successful students from those who are struggling in school:1) The regular support and motivation students receive

at home from parents.

2) The timely and early support parents give to the school in tackling issues their children faced in the school.

3) Students’ own attitudes - the seemingly little things that students do every day in school; coming to school punctually, bringing appropriate stationery and equipment, focusing and cooperating with teachers and doing regular work to ensure they are on top of their work.

These are the keys to success.

Thus as parents please do support us when we are enforcing school rules and policies such as uniform, homework and respect to teachers and elders as these are solid foundations by which our children build their successes. After all in the eyes of Allah, the most successful among us is our level of faith in him and our ‘akhlak’. So do please ensure our children do their solat five times a day because the “parable of the prayer is that of a running river in which we cleanse our hearts five times a day”. Thank you.

2016 has been another productive and rewarding year for our senior students. I had the opportunity of working closely with staff and my VCE team on reviewing and refining VCE policies and procedures to meet the needs of all students.

The College continued to grow in terms of VCE student numbers which allowed us to deliver a broader range of subjects to our VCE students. This can only be seen as a positive outcome for our students to provide them with a far greater range of pathway options for their post compulsory schooling or work life.

VCE student choices are determined by vocational or further study ambitions and are made from a comprehensive range of courses. Special features of the curriculum included the provision for all year 10 students, the study of VCE units. The Strategic Plan priorities included, Student Learning, Student Engagement and Wellbeing, Student Pathways and Transitions. The school embraced programs that enabled students to access university resources and programs which enhanced their VCE Studies.

The College invested in running tuition classes to further extend the VCE students in the areas of English, Maths and Science. All year 12 students took part in the English classes while the highest performing students took part in the Maths and Science subjects. This is included year 11 students completing a unit 3&4 subject. This Program ran every Saturday for 16 weeks by an external provider called CONNECT education. We also provided our students with the opportunity to attend ELEVATE sessions on ‘How to Ace their Exams’, ‘Study Sensei’ and ‘Time Management’.

In addition to this we invested considerable time and effort to introduce a new program; EDROLO. This is an online tutoring program available to students 24/7 which they benefited from.

Our list of extra-curricular programs also continued to enhance the learning and skill development of our students. They participated in programs which developed their resilience and team-work skills. Information evenings, sport days, camps and career expo’s, provided our students with opportunities to learn, explore and showcase their skills. None of these programs could function without the hard work, effort and commitment by our dedicated teachers and support staff.

Our year 12 students completed their 13 year school journey and celebrated the end at their Graduation Night on Wednesday 23rd November at the Grand Star Reception Centre in Altona. This was a very special night where we recognised the hard work and dedication of our students and their teachers. We wished our students well for their results, encouraged them to stay positive and to become valued members of our society. We look forward to hearing about their journeys in the years to come. Congratulations and well done!

In conclusion, Al-Taqwa College will be looking forward to the continuation of improving facilities covering all Learning Areas. I look forward to continuing my services at the College and to strive with the school to provide for the educational needs of our students into the future inshaAllah.

To all staff, students and families, I wish you a safe and happy holiday period and look forward to seeing you in 2017 refreshed, prepared and ready for yet another successful year.

This year has been a very busy and fruitful year with many new initiatives run by our Student Welfare and Development Team (SWD). We have worked very hard this year to promote stronger bonds and understanding between students and teachers. We kicked off the year with some shared agreements that focused on mutual respect, attentive listening, showing appreciation and ‘no put down’, as well as ensuring safety.

We re-established the homeroom program which allowed for more bonding between students and their teachers. This was the first meet and greet session of the day where students read Quran and Du’aa together. This also gave an opportunity for teachers to remind students of policies, share event dates and also provided opportunities for students to share their concerns through activities like circle time.

Assemblies across secondary were an integral component of this year’s student well-being and development process. We were lucky enough to have the chance for Victoria Police to visit our secondary campus and educate our young students about the danger of the internet and cyber bullying. The students listened with intrigue and were stunned by the realisation of how serious the dangers of the world wide web can really be. This allowed students to understand the safety measures taken to protect the youth of today from falling into these traps. We also had the opportunity to have Shiekh Abu Hamza visit weekly and deliver inspirational speeches that motivated the students to appreciate the religious teachings that Al-Taqwa has to offer.

As part of our mission to educate and expand the knowledge and skills of our students and the community, information sessions were provided to inform and coach our community about the Child Safety Initiative Program. This taught our parents and students how they can protect themselves and their families from online threats that exist today and where they are going tomorrow. It also encouraged students to speak up if they were feeling unsafe or threatened, and provided school staff with some guidelines of appropriate practices when working with children.

This year, the SWD team were very constructive in reviewing and restructuring the Behaviour Management Policies. At the beginning of the year the team sat together and designed a Student Wellbeing Booklet as an intensive guide to student behaviour and management that allowed for consistency and fairness.

The benefit of our improved structure enabled student accountability and allowed for restorative practice. As a result, we saw a reduction in behavioural issues with students taking responsibility of their own behaviour.

Another initiative this year was the ‘Man Cave’ project. The idea behind the golden tickets and the man cave was to reward good behaviour or encourage positive reinforcement regardless of students’ disciplinary record. For example, if a student was observed helping others, picking up rubbish, tidying up tables and chairs without being asked, or showing significant improvement in their classroom behaviour or academic performance they were given a ticket. That is, we should not reward just good students but also encourage positive behaviour by all our students. Once issued, the golden tickets were valid for two weeks. They were used during lunch from Monday to Friday. At the end of the month, a winning ticket was drawn. The winner was rewarded with a basketball or a soccer ball. The ‘Man Cave’ has a pool table, a carom set, three table-tennis tables and a television set to play PS3 or PS4 games.

During term one, we held an after school table table-tennis and carom competition in the Man Cave for the male staff. Congratulations to brother Rashid and brother Ayman for winning the carom competition and the table tennis competition respectively.

The SWD team together with the Health and PE Department organised our very first chess and carom competition for the secondary boys. It was a tense competition between Raqeeb Irfahan 8E and Obaid Mohamed 7G in the final of the carom competition. It was a nail-biting final between two equally matched competitors but Raqeeb finally won the game and thereby the title of our very first carom champion. The chess final was between Adem Cancar 12E and Sead Sejfovic 12D. It was more of a one-sided affair which was won easily by Adem. Congratulations to Raqeeb and Adem.

During term 3 the year 7 and 8’s took part in an inter-house basketball competition which was held over the course of a week and lunch times, concluding at the end of August. Each team played each other in a round robin and our over all winners were: 1st Ali, 2nd Othman, 3rd Omar and 4th Abu.

Overall, it was a very successful year that will inshaAllah continue to improve.

2016 was our first year of our Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) at Al-Taqwa College, and by all accounts it was a successful one. Over the course of the year, ALP functioned as an interactive and exhilarating learning environment which encompassed higher order thinking skills. The key aim of the ALP was to provide enriched learning activities beyond the scope that is prevalent within the mainstream classes.

Our accelerated English students were equipped with the skills to analyse and dissect all forms of persuasive media. For the first time ever at Al-Taqwa College, these English students constructed their own persuasive commercials using multi-media and ICT programs such as Movie Maker and iMovie. Their writing skills were also polished through the implementation of scaffolding methods which would, in no doubt, prove to be incredibly useful in their VCE Studies.

The accelerated math students were exposed to complex mathematical processes and problems through mathematical investigations beyond the scope and sequence requirements of the VCAA. We were so proud of their performance and attitude to the challenge. They did not give up on the assigned tasks and eventually through their perseverance they were able to work out the solutions.

During the year, our students were also entered into many external national math competitions, with many students gaining certificates of various levels of attainment. Two students from year 8 and a student from grade 5 scored so well that they were grouped in the top 6% of the country for their age group. This was an outstanding achievement and resulted in those students gaining scholarships with Al-Taqwa for 2017.

Overall, the ALP progressed nicely this academic year. Even though still in its early days, I believe that with our dedicated team, we will nurture this program until it flourishes.

All in all, 2016 was a great success for our accelerated classes, and we all look forward to 2017.

With the guidance and approval of our Principal, Omar Hallak, the Department invited heads and teachers from Islamic schools in Victoria to visit our school and discuss issues of interest to the current and future Muslim generations. It was a great opportunity for all participating schools to share their experiences in teaching Arabic and Quran, view our programs in these key learning areas and meet with our staff members. The forum proved to be fruitful and established the foundations for future cooperation.

The success of the annual Quran competition was another reflection of the hardworking and devoted Quran teachers. This year, we had contestants competing under the category of six ajzaa and the whole Quran.

The outcome of the last year Qatar Debate encouraged the Department to take part in the 2018 annual Qatar Debate Competition. For this purpose, students were selected from the advanced classes to join a weekly class to learn the techniques of debating in Arabic and be prepared for any future debating competitions at state and international level.A R A B I CThe introduction of the new Arabic text book “Taalam Al-Arabia” this year was very successful. With classes streamed to cater for all proficiency levels, the teachers delivered the teaching materials in an engaging and interactive manner. Students’ acquisition of Arabic have been shown in their abilities to sing in Arabic, recite Arabic poems, and role play different narratives from years 7 to 10.Arabic WeekArabic Week was another phase of success for both teachers and students. The activities were structured to enhance the acquired knowledge and at the same time entertain all. Teachers worked very hard and were extremely motivated to present their Department positively.

Teaching QuranQuran classes for year 7 and 8 were streamed into three levels; beginners for students new to reading the Arabic alphabet, recitation for students who were familiar with the Arabic alphabet but struggling with reading the Quran and lacking the rules of tajweed, and finally the advanced level for students who were able memorise and were established with tajweed rules. This streaming helped students progress quickly and inshaAllah, it will extend to year 9 in 2017.

Struggling students were offered morning classes in both Quran and Arabic during semester one.Islamic StudiesIslamic studies saw the application of the practical side of the Islamic studies teaching program. A mentoring program evolved during the course of 2015 and continued in 2016. A group of devoted senior high school students, visited classes in the morning to coach junior students and build sisterhood and brotherhood relationships amongst each other. Students also had motivational talks and presentations to address issues of concern. They played a great role in the smooth running of the zuhr prayer in the Mosque. Training was given and is continuing on to a selected interested group of students to deliver the Friday khutbah.

"CREATIVITY IS ALLOWING YOURSELF TO MAKE MISTAKES. ART IS KNOWING WHICH ONES TO KEEP."

SCOTT ADAMS

It has been a busy couple of semesters for the Art Department this year. With the introduction of two new Art Teachers, Ms Caroline Banks and Mr Farid Benserai and the planning of making the Art’s a core subject for 2017. Students have really stepped up with their creativity levels and have produced some outstanding pieces of artwork. Education in the Arts is an essential part of the development of each student. Those who have studied creative learning practices throughout the centuries, beginning with Plato, have highlighted the status of the Arts in the education process.

In 2017, Arts education will refer to education in the disciplines of preforming arts and visual arts. Study in the Arts is integral to our society. They are a part of the cultural heritage of every Muslim and are what make us most human, most complete as people. The Arts cannot be learned through occasional or random exposure any more than math or science, but through the expression of each student what their interpretation of the Arts being practical or digital.

During Art Week, activities were undertaken in different artist fields that allowed the students to attend and take place in the learning process. This was a great a success that motivated the students to continue these practices outside of school hours and for the Art Department having no choice but to host an Art Competition for students to be able to exhibit their artwork in. The prizes were also a great motivation and learning tools that the students won with pride. Well done to the winners of the Al-Taqwa 2016 Art Competition. You are all truly inspiration to watch and to learn from.

Lastly a big thank you to all the staff for their help and effort in this Department. You guys are the true Da Vinci’s to this generation.

This year has been an interesting and busy one! There is some information for secondary students to gain before pursuing their future decisions. I encourage every student to begin pondering about subjects they enjoy, and from that point the subjects would lead to courses they would like to pursue. It is important, that every individual reads resources like the job guide, VTAC, University guides, brochures and career newsletters to gain knowledge and help them gain a range of ideas and choices for securing a position for their future. Whatever their choice after school - further study, employment or a gap year - make sure it is well considered. Work Experience Program 2016

The Work Experience Program is aimed to help students further explore what type of career paths they would like to take beyond secondary education. Each student must first investigate what their interests are and what careers they like. They can do this by using a number of resources such as the Job Guide, career pathways booklet, the internet and many book resources available from the careers office. This year the Work Experience Program was a big success.

Approximately 70% of our year 10 students were successfully able to find a work experience placement for the term 3 holidays. Placements were undertaken in areas of law, education, accounting, finance, dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, graphic design and engineering.

I am very proud and pleased with this year’s student performances while on work experience. All employees were very pleased and had nothing but praise for our students. I am proud of everyone who completed their work experience this year. I am sure it will be something they will remember for years to come.

Each student must find a work place themselves and arrange their work placement during a set period of time. As part of government legislation, students must also undertake an Occupational Health & Safety course in order to partake in the Work Experience Program. This is usually conducted after all work experience arrangement forms have been collected.

Students are given employer packs and a work experience diary. I do a check up on students during work experience by calling and speaking to their supervisor, upon completion students are given a certificate of completion.

VCE and Careers Expo

The Age Expo was held on Thursday 5 May for year 12 students. The expo provided students with a unique opportunity to obtain VCE, career information and resources in the one location. The Expo attracts record crowd numbers and this year was no exception.

There was an extensive program of seminars which ran throughout the Expo. Each student received a complimentary copy of The Age which included the Expo Visitors Guide prior to the excursion.

WRICA Careers and Employment Expo

The WRICA Careers and Employment Expo Excursion was held on Thursday 19 May for year 10 students at the Werribee Racecourse Centre. It was an insightful event, full of information and career resources where students obtained advice and training information. The day was very informative and eventful for all students who represented our school in a positive manner and were commended. Overall, a successful day.

VCE/VCAL Information Night 2016

During August, Al-Taqwa College held its annual VCE Information Night. The night gave students and parents the opportunity to become more familiar with what VCE is and how it impacts a students’ final year in secondary education. Students and parents were exposed to presentations by the VCE teachers. Explaining the subjects, VCE and how the program works as well as career pathways and Career Centre Services available to students at our College.

A motivational speech prepared by current Year 12 student, Khalid Dibb, was a very interesting eye opener for students who attended the night. He took the time to explain his VCE experience in a very thorough manner and gave insight to all students on how to tackle the final year of secondary education.

Towards the end of the night students and parents were given the opportunity to discuss subjects and with VCE teachers. SUBJECT SELECTION NIGHT 2016

The subject selection evening was also held in August. This was an opportunity for students currently in Years 9 to 11 together with their parents, to come and discuss the subjects on offer with representatives from each of our learning areas.

Each learning area, or faculty, was represented at stalls on the evening. These stalls were attended by teachers with first-hand experience teaching and facilitating the senior subjects.

Career Pathways and Counselling Stand

Parents and students had the opportunity to speak directly with teachers about the scope and content, assessment tasks and challenges of each subject. Stalls also displayed examples of student work and information for parents and students to take home.

The stalls were a great opportunity to get to know faculty staff and ask subject specific questions, which assisted parents and students in making the best decisions for future career options.

Guest Speakers (RMIT Panel)

The aim of having guest speakers was to encourage students to develop a better understanding for different career pathways. The objective was exposure for the students to see as many different careers as possible. Students also got to see people’s personal journeys, experiences and passions for their job. Guest speakers built connections between our school and the local community, and offered glimpses of the various realms that students are studying and may one day enter. They had an essential role to play in preparing students for course objectives and career goals. Career Counselling

The focus of Career Counselling is generally on issues such as career exploration, career pathways, personal development, subject selection and other career related issues.

Career counselling is the process of helping students select a course of study that may help them get a job or make them employable. I help student’s research career options that are suited to their aptitude, personality, interest and skills.

The use of career resources such as the Job Guide, VTAC, course directories, Al-Taqwa career news and open days also facilitate students decision in their choice of a career pathway.

Year 9–12s were counselled individually, with each year level at a different stage. The year 9-11s were mainly subject selections with more emphasis at year 10 to look at career pathways by undertaking work experience and to choose VCE subjects. The year 12s are more focused on tertiary application and choices.

‘‘To seek knowledge is a sacred duty, it is obligatory on every Muslim, male and female.” Being a Muslim society, we already know that Islam places great import on reading and education. Centuries before the European Renaissance there were Muslim Renaissance men, who were simultaneously explorers, scientists, philosophers, physicians and poets.

“Reading pervades every educational field. The sequencing, decoding and comprehension skills necessary to provide a foundation for learning. Therefore every human being starts their reading since their childhood.”

Shared by Asma Hussein 9D, Class of 2016 during English Week

2016 started off with a positive vibe with the new intake of our year 7s where they quickly adapted into their new routines and study expectations in English. They explored new texts and learning techniques in their English literature lessons with text responses and fun oral and group activities in their classes.

The year 8 and 9 students took their learning to the next level when they continued to explore higher ability text responses activities and group activities. The notion of valuing certain texts as literature was introduced in depth. Students learned how such texts can be discussed and analysed in relation to themes, ideas and historical and cultural contexts. They re-enact, represent and describe texts in order to display their understanding of narrative, theme, purpose, context and argument and to defend their ideas in written and oral modes. Students were also given further opportunities to create increasingly sophisticated and multimodal texts in groups and individually.

The year ended with heaps of fun activities and games during English Week in Term 4. Students participated in poster and model making activities. They became wonderfully competitive during the year level activities with thought provoking games in the hall like Spelling Bee, Guess the Famous Quotes, General Knowledge Trivia, Spot the Items, Limericks, Riddles and Tongue Twisters.

EDUCATION IS MORE THAN A LUXURY; IT IS A RESPONSIBILITY THAT SOCIETY OWES TO ITSELF.

At Al-Taqwa, we take on the onus of shaping our students into moral and responsible Muslim citizens of Australia. Our English classrooms enhance personal and social development, both through the curriculum content and the pedagogies used in teaching English. Students examine and analyse current issues - providing opportunities to engage with public speaking.

They read, interpret and critique a variety of texts - providing opportunities to consider the world from other viewpoints. They participate in a variety of oral activities - providing opportunities for productive talk to develop personal confidence in presenting ideas to peers, and to develop debating skills. They develop an extensive range of writing skills, including personal and creative writing - providing opportunities to shape and communicate thoughts and feelings. Students are actively engaged with thinking: inquiring, creative thinking, reasoning, evaluation and critical reflection - both within the context of their English course and cross curriculum.

English Week

Come English Week and the multipurpose hall buzzes with various activities chalked out by our teachers to make it educational the fun-filled way. For the Year 10’s we had activities ranging from Spelling Bee, Vocabulary and Guess the Author. The Year 11’s had a Public Speaking Competition with eight students vying for the top spot which was eventually won by Shahani Munaff who discouraged young women from buying cosmetics that are tested on animals. The first runner up was Sabah, who sent out a thought provoking message on racism stemming from ignorance, whilst Asma Mahamed championed the cause of women in gender equality and was placed third.

Debating

As always, our students did us proud. The debating program at Al-Taqwa College has experienced a strong tradition of talent, achievement and commitment, providing a gateway to vast opportunities throughout school life and beyond. Our students thrive in this area, expanding ideas and perceptions, developing confidence, critical analysis, logic, competitive spirit, teamwork, leadership skills, and surpassing perceived benchmarks on all levels. Furthermore, debating students consistently represent the school in inter-school competitions such as the Debaters’ Association of Victoria’s Schools Competition. The students hone their skills in debating on topics ranging from Politics to Societal issues and have been awarded Best Speakers.

Public Speaking

The Plain English Speaking Award (PESA) is a public-speaking competition for students aged 15-18 years. PESA provides an excellent opportunity for students to build self-confidence and extend their skills in oral communication, speech writing and research. This year Sead Sejfovic and Khaled Dibb represented our school. Both spoke very passionately on their chosen topics. Sead spoke about the importance of not judging people and Khaled spoke about feminism and why women should be treated with equality.

Open Day

Open Day was an opportunity for parents wishing to see the myriad of educational facilities on offer at Al-Taqwa. We had many prospective parents viewing the work and projects that the students accomplished. They had an opportunity to go around the school and visit each subject area’s stall and chat with teachers and student representatives to gain information. The English Department would like to take this opportunity to wish our VCE students every success and know that they will make their Alma Mater proud.I would like to thank all the teachers in the English Department for their unstinting effort in bringing out the best in their students.

Every kid in every school no matter their background, deserves to learn the basics about food - where it comes from, how to cook it and how it affects their bodies. These life skills are as important as reading and writing, but they've been lost over the past few generations. We need to bring them back and bring up our kids to be streetwise about food.

JAMIE OLIVER

This quote has been both an inspiration and the driving force for the Food Technology Department all through 2016.

The year began with fervour to gain more knowledge and skills about food and its preparation and extend existing skills to all who walked through our doors. We had over 200 students both boys and girls and several staff members both male and female who came to the Food Technology room to discover their potential with this important skill.

Through the coursework we created an awareness and connection between food, nutrition and health. Students also discovered the factors that drove their food choices and how their food habits impacted both the wider community and the environment.Amidst all of this learning, the students through the practical lessons were able to prepare and explore different foods, make sensory analysis and discover the art of food preparation.HIGHLIGHTS OF 2016

Special Guest

Mr Hallak was one of our special guests who kindly consented to share his expertise with the students. With great enthusiasm he introduced the students to traditional Palestinian food. He shared not only his proficiency but also his skill and his passion for food. Students and teachers were both impressed and inspired by his love for a good hearty and healthy meal.Teachers’ Culinary Classes

Amongst all the marking, planning, meetings and school work the teacher’s culinary classes continued to stay alive where several generous staff members shared not only their skills but also their secret recipes to make some simple but mouth watering meals. Going away from these sessions made all participating staff feel more confident to take on the new challenges and encouraged us to become more diverse in our food

preparation and food tastes. These classes not only taught us new skills but also go to prove that every day is a new learning experience. These sessions are also very successful stress busters and bonding opportunities for the staff.

Open Day 2016

This new venture for the Food Technology Department opened our eyes to the commitment and enthusiasm of 12 Food Technology students who showcased the skills that they had developed and honed over the term. The students worked with zealousness and produced food items with minimal direction. It was impressive to see the boys demonstrate their organisational skills and mastery in the technical skills they had learnt through the term matched with their creativity and passion. The work of the students not only wowed the staff but every single parent and community member who walked through our doors that morning. Above all every one of the members walked out with a tasty treat and smiles on their faces which made it a very rewarding experience for the students who worked hard.

As 2016 closed we looked into 2017 with a renewed eagerness and aspiration continuing on our culinary journey and make food and basic life skills known to our students in the hope of preparing them for a better and well equipped tomorrow.

Humanities at Al-Taqwa College aims to challenge students to discover, analyse and evaluate real world situations, preparing them for what they may encounter in their future careers. This diverse learning area covers a range of disciplines including geography, history, economics, business, civics and citizenship. It addresses past and contemporary perspectives to develop an understanding of democratic and just societies, citizenship, enterprise and environmental sustainability. Humanities also offers a varied range of subjects to our VCE students in which includes accounting, business management, global politics, history, legal studies and sociology.

The year started with our Year 8s visiting the Islamic Museum of Australia during Term 2. Our students had the opportunity to view over 10 exhibits showcasing Islamic Art, Islamic Architecture, Islamic Faith, Islamic Contribution to Civilisation and Australian Muslim History. Throughout the tour, our students were engaged and many of their intriguing questions were answered.

Mid August dawned an exciting and promising day for the VCE Legal Studies students who made their way to the Melbourne Magistrates Court and the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal to gain vital understanding of the Victorian Legal System and VCAT. This first-hand learning not only prepared them for the outcomes in their course but also gave them a personal experience to witness the working of the Legal system in Victoria. The day was very successful in etching great memories in the minds of our students.

It has also been a great year for Al-Taqwa College when the students of Year 7s, 8s and 9s participated in the Asia Wise Challenge. The student-centred approach enabled our students to research and develop their literacy and ICT skills in an Asian context. This program also required students to go online and submit their answers.

The Asia Wise Challenge helped our students to evaluate their performance and gain knowledge about Asian countries.

In Term 4, our enthusiastic ‘Humming Team’ (Humanities Department) was excited and looked forward for Humanities Week which was from 17-21 October. Both, teachers and students buzzed around to organise the various activities – the Year 7 to Year 10 Inter class Quiz, the ‘Humanities Week’ poster competition and we also had an array of models displayed in the hall. Students were actively engaged in the competitions which stirred up a competitive spirit among them. Congratulations to all the students who put in great effort and won the competitions. As a part of Humanities Week, we also organised a 'Gold Coin Day' to raise funds for the school where our Girls wore coloured scarfs and boys coloured sports shoes.

As is always said, nothing goes well unless we have a cooperative, enthusiastic and a hard-working team. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the members of the ‘Humming team’ for their continued support and tireless contributions.

We had a wonderful time this year. As a part of ICT and STEM to integrate technology into the curriculum, students were encouraged to participate in the Computational Thinking Challenge (Bebra Challenge). It was conducted online during class time where students were very enthusiastic to solve problems and achieve their best.

Another activity, Go Girls Go for IT was organised by Ms Raghda and Ms Kaur, where students visited the Deakin University Burwood Campus. Girls listened to professional keynote speakers about their excellent experiences in IT fields. Then they visited all the stalls of the tradeshow where they had the opportunity to talk to IT professionals about digital careers in different organisations. Super Workshops such as Cool Tech, The Future of Transportation, Five Digital Trends Shaping Our World - how will they impact our future? Careers of the Future - The Only Limits are Our Imaginations etc, were also attended to gain the knowledge about the future jobs in IT.

During ICT Week different kinds of activities such as photo editing, programming, cloud computing, quizzes, Google data centre virtual tours and poster competitions were held to motivate and entertain students during lunch time and class room activities. Also an incursion was organised during October to demonstrate to the students how to code with NAO Robot. It was great to see students’ involvement and enthusiasm to learn about programming. The winners were awarded with certificates and awards.

The ICT Department is growing and next year there is going to be a compulsory Digital Technology subject where the Victorian curriculum will focus on digital careers. We hope that students will enjoy this subject where they will have fun learning activities, problem solving skills and programming. See you all next year.

The study of textiles provide students with a broad knowledge of the properties, performance and uses of textiles in which fabrics, colours, yarns and fibres are explored. The focus areas of apparel, furnishing, costume, textile arts and non-apparel are recognised fields of textiles that will direct choices of student projects. From these choices, students produced pencil cases, pin cushions, library bags, tapestry and head caps, knitted scarves, tidy bears and felt key rings. Currently the subject is offered to students from year 7 to 10, with the goal offering product design and technology in VCE in the near future.

The textile room provided a creative workspace for students to experiment and explore practically, using a wide range of materials and tools. Students learnt the basic techniques in using a sewing machine and understanding its parts and usage. They have learnt how to sew lines, make stitches and patterns using different techniques.

Students also participated in the following. • Excursions to the National Wool Museum and

Scarves Festival.

• Al-Taqwa College Fete with their products displayed including plastic bags holders and aprons.

It has been a massive year in the VCAL Department, that has not only seen the introduction of a number of new teachers and exciting projects but also the introduction of VCAL to the current year 10’s who have contributed enormously to the foundation of the program. VCAL is now offered to almost 500 schools in Victoria and still growing, which shows the popularity of the program. Our program has now been running firmly for two years. VCAL provides students with an alternative pathway to finishing year 12 and also further study. The school formed partnerships with several TAFE institutions including Victoria University and Kangan which are based at various locations throughout Melbourne.

The VCAL program provided students with the opportunity to complete a year 12 certificate while obtaining qualifications in Cert 2, 3 or 4. They also gett plenty of industry experience in their chosen career path in the way of paid work through trusty employers. Some of the industries the students studied and worked include, building, business, childcare, fashion design and technology and early learning.

As mentioned, It has been an extremely busy and indeed an exciting year with the VCAL students involved in various community projects and activities.

This year Al-Taqwa College was lucky enough to start a long term sustainability project known as the eco farm being constructed on our very own Sayers Road campus. This project focused on constructing an animal farm from new and recycled materials and focused on saving energy and water, while maintaining a green house to house some farm animals, which is all part of the process. The best part is that the VCAL students

were involved in the construction of the eco farm and the project also aimed to involve the school community in the running of the farm house, where ownership and responsibility is a key focus.

Some other exciting projects included the year 10 VCAL class running a youth program called Boys to Men. This aimed at raising awareness of various teen issues to Al-Taqwa boys. PDS and WRS across all VCAL levels took a direct focus on industry skills and visited many workshops offered to youth throughout the year. This also included the Eid stall where $450 was raised in one week. VCAL literacy saw the introduction of new texts and the students were able to exercise their creative writing skills, selling many of the projects they worked on throughout the year. In numeracy, as always, the VCAL focus was on practicing numeracy skills used in everyday life and also industry specific numeracy.

The year finally came to an end though, and no rest for the wicked as VCAL has big plans for 2017 which includes a curriculum full of exciting and innovating projects that are sure to have VCAL students satisfied. At the end of this, students will obtain a pass in all their strands as expected. For the lucky year 12’s who conclude their studies and receive their full VCAL this year, they will be going onto further study or looking for employment in their chosen industry, making their dreams come true. On behalf of the VCAL classes and also Al-Taqwa we would like to thank the hard working dedicated VCAL teachers, the support of our heads and our Principal, Mr Hallak. Most of all the program would not succeed without the will and hard work of our students to succeed. See you next year.

The secondary Science Department started off the year with the aim to support students of all backgrounds in deeply understanding science ideas, participate in the activities of the discipline, and develop scientific investigation skills. To attain this noble goal our school sponsored the participation of our students in many activities including Titration Competition held by RACI, Science and Engineering Challenge held by the University of Newcastle and a robotics incursion for years 7 to 10 during Science Week.

To motivate our senior students and give them an idea about university education we had an incursion from the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University, which was attended by the year 11 and 12 science students. The presenter Tomy Day, briefed the students about what they will learn in the pharmaceutical courses, what jobs they could get and what are the pre-requisites to get into the courses.

For the first time in the history of Al-Taqwa College our senior students took part in the Titration Competition held by Royal Australian Chemical Institute. Five teams comprising of three students each from years 10, 11 and 12 were trained for a term by the Chemistry teachers. The competition was held during term 2 and all of our teams did well. Anisa Mohamud, Najma Mukhtar Sheikh and Sucdi Jama were ranked 37 out of the 286 teams that participated. They lost the first place for a difference of as little as 0.0033 in their final results. Congratulations!

A group of 30 students from year 10 took part in the Melbourne Regional Science and Engineering Challenge held at Victoria University as part of STEM Week activities conducted by University of Newcastle. The activities were hands on, challenging and really inspired our future scientists, who exhibited great team work, enthusiasm and passion to succeed. In spite of this being their first experience in such a competition, our students made us proud by coming fourth in the competitions.

Our year 10, 11 and 12 Biology and Chemistry students went on various excursions to the Werribee Open Range Zoo and Ecolinc at Bacchus Marsh, where they conducted experimental investigations to make their understanding of the topics learnt in the class room more concrete.

The Year 9 boys were gifted with an opportunity to take part in the Be a Chemist for a Day Program held

by Victoria University. The students took part in some inquiry learning sessions by conducting five experiments of varying complexity at the university’s chemistry laboratory. It was a golden opportunity for our boys to be a part of such an exciting practical lesson.

In the meantime the year 9 girls attended the Forensic Detective Program at Deakin University. The girls really enjoyed the chance to engage in solving a murder mystery. They showed off their observation skills and forensic abilities and came up with some great hypothesis whilst trying to put a murder jigsaw puzzle together. Excellent and thorough discussions took place between our students and the demonstrators and many relevant questions were asked. Students learned about DNA profiling, analysing fingerprints and hair fiber, entomology, foot wear analysis and much more. The girls and the accompanying teachers had a fun filled and informative session at the University.

Year 8 students had a great opportunity to be involved in an excursion to Science Works which was informative, entertaining and electrifying! The day started off with students exploring around the interactive museum with all the cool activities. Set in a purpose built high voltage lightning room theatre, which featured equipment unique to Science Works, students were given a 40 minute presentation that demonstrated the principles of static electricity. Students explored how current electricity is produced using permanent magnets and coils of wire and how this principle is applied in power stations and electrical devices. This was an amazing experience!

95

The Science Department also organised an incursion ‘Big Science Big Fun’ for the year 7 students. The incursion covered curriculum content for the year 7s in an engaging manner. This was evident in the enthusiasm and willingness our students showed to participate in the activities and also when answering and responding to the presenter's questions. The incursion sparked our learners’ inquiry skills and many interesting questions were asked to the presenter. Science Week was celebrated with pomp and splendor this year by the Secondary Department.

It indeed was a very busy week for the Department with various activities running all week, which included bath bomb making, Lego robotics incursion, cake decoration and much more. But, the best part of the Science Fair was the display of students work organised in the MPH on Friday. Unbelievable! What some students had done was beyond our expectation. The hall came alive with student creations and working models, which they displayed so much pride to present. Some even had a hovercraft operated by bluetooth, while others had working catapults, windmills, buzzers, volcanic eruptions, and so much more ... students from primary and secondary classes along with parents, visited the exhibition. It was an eye opener for students and teachers alike. Some of us did not anticipate what our scientists could create. An opportunity to explore, was all they needed.

Competitions were also organised which were running in the other eight rooms from period 4 onwards. These included, building a bridge, hovercraft, earthquake resistant tower, baby lifesaver jackets, parachute egg lander, newspaper tower and bionic hand. This year we are taking part in the trial run of Pearson Light book for year 11 Chemistry and Physics. This book introduces the versatility of the technological world into the class room. The book is proving to be a great teaching and learning tool.

Success comes with teamwork and support. Overall, the Science Department, with the hard work and dedication from its teachers, celebrated a wonderful year of science learning! We are confident that the experiences gained this year will pave the way forward for a more successful and eventful year in 2017.

Stay positive, work hard, make it happen!
