INTRODUCTION

THIS bibliography is a study of trends. andseeks to suggest directions for further doctoralresearch in foreign language learning Indteaching. Hopefully, it will provide a guide tothose who know best the kind and quality ofresearch that will contribute to better under-standing of language learning and instruc-tion. Resevrch at the doctoral level has tradi-tionally involved taking one or more isolatedtopics of interest and examining these in asmuch detail as possible, in order to fill some"vacuum" in previous research. It is rare thata dissertation has such broad perspective orvalue outside of its narrow scan that it can besaid to have contributed greatly to its aca-demic field, even though its author may go onto produce significant contributions.

Most of the dissertations in this bibliographyare of the more restricted sort. They deal witha specific problem, with an aspect of a prob-lem, or with the results of a particular experi-ment, usually performed in a defined geo-graphical location or with a fairly isolated ta -get population. For this reason, most end upbeing exercises in research rather than workswhich expand the bases for further research. For doctoral candidates, this is perhaps as itshould be. Counselors of doctoral candidates, however, might help provide some of themuch-needed expansion in the field of for-eign language education by taking care toguide their charges into new, largely unex-plored areas. There is room for change in thedirections candidates should pursue in theirresearch, regardless of whether they are writ-ing expansions or exercises.

What is called for is more balance in for-eign language research. In reference to thecategories of this bibliography, there is an ob-vious need for more research in teacher edu-cation, methodology in specific skills and out-comes, curriculum and classroom materials.and the teaching of foreign literature. A greatdeal of research on linguistics, bilingualism, and teaching programs in English for speak-

ers of other languages has already been ac-complished, and, even though research fromthese three areas can contribute much towork in foreign language education, the needfor doctoral studies in the other areas men-tioned is crucial to a continuing knowledgeof how a second language is learned inschools.

The original purpose of this project wasto collect and classify those doctoral disserta-tioth which deal with the study and teachingof modern foreign languages. This was ac-complished primarily by searching throughDissertation Abstracts (DA), known as Dis-

sertation Abstracts International (DAI) since

July 1969 (Volume 30, i), and isolating thosetitles considered pertinent to the proposedbibliography. However, during the search itwas discovered that dissertations dealingstrictly with foreign language research andeducation were not the only ones of poten-tial use to the doctoral candidate seeking re-search in language teaching. Following thelead of the ACTFL Bibliography, with sev-eral modifications, other areas tangent to for-eign language research and education wereincorporated into the project.

On the other hand, certain areas were notincluded at all. Dissertations of a strictly lit-erary nature were omitted, except for the veryfew titles which suggest how literary materialmight be integrated with the teaching of aforeign language. Dissertations on linguis-tics were also excluded, except for those deal-ing with the phonology, morphology, and syn-tax of modern languages. For the most part, only the more widely known and taught lan-guages were included.

The bulk of the dissertattou titles col-

lected comes from Volumes 22 to 31 ofDA /DAI (July 1961 through June 1971). Upto Volume 22 most issues of DA did not con-tain a workable subject index. The publica-tion in 1970 of the Dissertation Abstracts In-dex, a nine-volume summary of DAMN,

5

vi Doctoral Dissertations in Modtrli Language Education

made it possible to go through the volunitsup to Volume 22 and collect titles not other-wise easily gathered. Furthermore with Vol-ume 30,i(July 1969), DA/ began using a thesau-rus-like "Keyword Title Index," which is thebasis of the Dissertation Abstracts Index as

well. Both the "Keyword Title Index" andDissertation Abstracts Index will make futurecollection of information on modern languageeducation and research less time consuming.

Although care was exercised to collect as

many pertinent titles as possible, many wereno doubt overlooked unintentionally. On sev-eral occasions titles were suggested to thebibliographer which were found upon closerexamination to be of minimal, if not mislead-ing, value to language teachers. Also, sometitles were suggested which could not befound in DA/DA/ either because they weretoo new to be cited or because of printing er-rors in DA/DAL It is hoped that in spite ofthese unavoidable omissions enough informa-tion about the status of doctoral restach in

modern language education can be obtainedfrom the titles'in this selective bibliographyto be useful in pursuing further research.

One last comment should be made aboutthis project. With very few exceptions, allthe titles in the bibliography were selectedsolely on the basis of the abstract. The wholedissertation was rarely available for closerstudy of the research involved. It would beimpossible to evaluate the dissertation on thebasis of the abstract alone, or to try to derivemore information from it than was actuallyprovided. Thus, no judgment is made or ht-plied about the quality of the research car-ried out in pursuit of the doctoral degree.

The author wishes to acknowledge the as-

sistance and guidance of Dr. Dale L. Langeand Dr. Emma M. Birkmaier throughout theentire project. Ile also wishes to express hisappreciation to his wife, Carol, for her helpduring the preparation and proofreading ofthe final form of the manuscript.

REVIEW OF THE CONTENTS

GENERAL

This small group ules titles which donot readily fit into the other sections used inthis document, but which nevertheless are ofinterest- to anyone in the field of research inmodern language education. Titles listed heredeal with the administration of foreign lan-guage programs, and with whatever historyof foreign language teaching is not discussedin other categories such as currictilmn, meth-ods, and teacher-training.

LINGUISTICS

By far the largest group of titles. LIN-GUISTICS covers those dissertations whichdeal with the analyses of modern spoken lan-guages. The Genera/ subheading presentsworks which cover either a language family.(Romance, Slavic, etc.) or basic aspects oflanguage structures (gender, verbs, graphol-ogy, grammar, etc.).

The English subheading was included fortwo reasons: (I) Studies in BILINGUALISMand TEACHING ENGLISH TO SPEAK-ERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES call for

analyses of the linguistic features of English, and (2) many dissertations on other lan-

guages use the English language as the basisof comparison, which necessitates extensivecross-referencing into English.

CULTURE

Of the seventy-seven titles collected in thissection, only ten were found to be of directvalue to the classroom teacher involved in pre-senting the cultural aspects of a given languageto students, namely those dissertations by Mah-

gold) (281), French (283). Jarvis (314),

Figueroa (319), Green (320), Jassey (321),

Jeffery (322). Romero (325), Nlorain (334),and Saiki (337). The remainder deal pri-marily with analyses of given cultures or cul-tural groups, mainly through anthropological

or sociological studies. Clearly more studiesinvolving practical aspects of teaching foreigncultures in the context of foreign languageprograms could be made. At present, very lit-tle research of this nature has been done atthe doctoral level.

During the search several titles dealingwith the problems of foreign students adjust-ing to American university life came to light.Although these do not necessarily reflect con-cerns with learning English or with the learn-ing of the foreign language or culture byAmericans, it was felt that such works repre-sented a significant aspect of cross-culturalcommunication which might interest and . in-form foreign language teachers, and whichtherefore should be included in this bibliog-raphy. Where a specific foreign culturalgroup was the subject of a dissertation, thetitle appears tinder the subheading for thatgroup (Scandanavian, Spanish, etc.): other-wise, it was placed under General.

TEACHING THE FOREIGNLITERATU R E

With the exception of GENERAL, this isthe smallest section in the bibliography, con-taining only seven titles. Considering the lit-erally hundreds of dissertations written everyyear on literary themes at American univer-sities, this is somewhat amazing. However, asthis bibliography indicates, there have beenvery few dissertations produced which givethe foreign language teacher information onpractical aspects of presenting literature inthe classroom. It should be pointed out that, although titles under the sections CURRIC-ULUM and METHODS do contain refer-ences to teaching literature, few go beyondthe level of developing the basic readingskills in the foreign language. Perhaps it is

assumed, rightly or wrongly, that the reading, analysis. and "appreciation" of literature in aforeign language involve the same skills andabilities as in the native language, and that

vii 7

getting students over the hurdle of efficientreading of the basic written language is a suffi-cient task for the classroom foreign languageteacher. In any case, the selection of appropri-ate reading materials for a given level of lan-guage proficiency and their effective presenta-tion in the classroom arc areas that sorely needmore study.

CURRICULUM IN FOREIGNLANGUAGES

This section covers what is taught in for-eign language courses and how such coursesare arranged at various academic levels. Ofthe 61 titles collected here, 19 deal with theelementary level (FLES), 9 with secondary,1.1 with undergraduate, 2 with graduate, I

with adult, and 16 with "multilevel" or gen-eral. A sizeable number of all these titles (20)deal with foreign language programs in spe-cific geographical regions, inchnling two oncurriculum in the Soviet Union (Bartley, 359;Conrad, 588), one on comparative curriculabetween the United States and Great Britain(Montague, 375), and one on the teaching offoreign languages in Switzerland (Renault',395).

Because of the current interest in the sub-ject, it was hoped that more research on theimlividualitation of foreign language instruc.tion would appear than was in fact evident, but only three titles were found: one on in-dependent study in German and in Spanishat the secondary level (Pease, 365), and twoon programmed materials in college French(Young, 381; Cadart- Ricatd, 387).

Only three dissertations deal with programsin foreign countries, all at the undergraduatelevel (Leonard, 373; C. Smith, 378; Van deWater, 380), even though the topic wouldseem to be of definite interest to teachers andresearchers.

Little appears to have been written con-cerning behavioral objectives as they apply tocurricul,3; f.lerelopment. Five dissertationsdeal w;.!, :',;ses of the outcomes of curricu-lar constructions. Kalivoda (371) develops aset of criteria for evaluating undergraduateforeign language programs. Leonard (373)

presents the specific behavioral outcomes ex-pected from a foreign travel program at theundergraduate level. Banathy (385) developsa "systems approach" to foreign languagecurricula as a theoretical basis for determin-ing outcomes of foreign language pro-grams. Garibaldi (312) and Hussey (345)deal with the criteria for foreign languagesin the elementary grades, and suggest howthe rationale for their development might beapplied to practical programs.

Except for those twenty dissertations onspecific programs in specific geographicalareas, the formal organization of foreign Ian-page curricula is represented by five titles.Borst (341) surveys a program for parttimeSpanish instruction at the elementary level.Muller (319) deals with two scheduling ar-rangements in foreign language programs.Otto (351) discusses the staffing and adminis-tration of programs. Elkins (360) takes upsummer language programs in secondaryschools, and Jantzen (361) analyzes the In-diana University honors Program for secon-dary school students.

Although a sufficient variety of research hasbeen done on practical application of foreignlanguage curricula, little has been clone onthe development of classroom materials: text.books, learning units, visuals, and the like.Of the dissertations listed under CURRICU-LUM, five are of greatest interest on this sub-ject. Almoner() (339) discusses teacher-oriented versus multisensory FLES materials.Vitelli (367) evaluates sonic practices for theselection use of Spanish textbooks at thesecondary level, and Renfroe (396) d 'yes sirfilar research on textbooks for teachingFrench. Pfister (376) analyzes a kt:.,,i.tion ofcollegelevel German textbooks publishedfrom 1958 to 1968. Young (381) discusses theexperimental use of programmed materialsfor teaching reading in French at the collegelevel. There is also a dissertation by Frechette(99), crossreferenced from LINGUISTICS,on the vocabulary found in French textbooks.

With the development of individualized in.struction and the attendant increase in theamount of classroom materials, more re-search in the field of foreign language cur-

riculum should be forthcoming. Althoughdiscussions of individual school district orstatewide programs have value as examplesof curricular innovations or progress, there isa need for more research on broader. proles.tionAvide aspects of foreign language cur-riculum.

PHYSIOLOGY AND PSYCHOLOGY 01'LANGUAGE LEARNING

This large section presents research on the"human" aspects of language learning andteaching. There are three large subheadings.General inchtdes titles with a nonspecilic tar-get population in regard to language learn-ing, as well as titles not easily placed else-where in the major category. Subjects dealingwith the theory of language acquisition(Bates, 01: Houston, 404; Meat, 406) arelisted here. First Language Learning takes upthe learning of a speaker's native language.Doctoral material found ltere treats mainlythe acquisition of language by children andyoung people. Although most of the disserta-tions would seem to be directed at learnersof English as a native language, there are sev-eral titles which reflect the learning of other"first" languages, nantely Luo (Blown, 4 14),Samoan (Kernan, 4 15). Arabic (Omar. 416),Tzeltal (Stoss, 917), and Spanish (Gonzales,28). Second Language Learning. of course,

includes works dealing with the study of for-eign languages after the native tongue hasbeen acquired.

Of the three subheadings, the second, deal-ing with first language learning, is the largestgroup, reflecting the work done in the UnitedStates on the acquisition of English by nativespeakers of English. Additional research onthe acquisition of second languages by nativespeakers of any first language, not only En-glish, is needed.

Both of the subcategories Firs! LanguageLearning and Second Language Learning arefurther divided according to specific aspects ofthe language - learning process:

a) General (more than one of the fol-lowing aspects involved).

ix

b) Language Skills (operation and mea-surement of listening. speaking, read-ing, writing, grammar, and vocabularyskills).

c) Physiology (physical aspects of Ianguage production, including mental re-tardation and physical retardation).

d) Psycholinguistics (internalization pro-cesses of language acquisition includingmemory, cognition, psychomotor skills, concept formation).

e) Student Factors (individual studentdifferences in academic achievement.age. sex, socioeconomic environment, personal attitudes).

f) Teaching and Learning Methods (atti-tudes of teachers. and administratorstoward language teaching and learn-ing, teacher.student interaction, schoolenvironment).

BILINGUALISM

Studies involving subjects whose linguisticbackground includes English and anotherlanguage are listed in this section. For themost part, these studies discuss the effects ofbilingualist» upon one's use of language inone or both languages, and upon social oracademic achievement as a result of exposureto both languages. Not surprisingly, many,

deal with Spanish - speakers or speakers ofAmerican Indian languages. Also noteworthyis the fact that many such dissertations origi-nate in the universities of the southwesternstates, an area with large Mexican-Americanand American Indian populations.

Although this section reveals the largenumber of studies made on persons whose na-tive language is not English. and whose lan-guage and culture perhaps conflict with theEnglish - dominated culture, very few disserta-tions appear to have been written on the ef-fects of learning a second language, upon lan-guage acquisition generally, or upon the de-velopment of specific language skills, Mostseem to deal with bilingualism as a "prob-lem" to be overcome for purposes of function-ing in an English linguistic culture, approach-ing the speaker of a non-English language

thogh the medium of the socially-dontinantEnglish language. There is little research thathas been done at the doctoral level on thefunctioning of "socially equal" bilingualism.though a few studies have attempted to dothis. including Evers (569). Nakano (57).and Trevino (577). Further stitches mightlook at those English speakers vlio learn asecond language. preferably by '...xposnre tothe language in its nilinual sassing. ;:A(.:11Elt EDUCATION IN FOREIGNE.A:',"GUAGES

1;',.:itly nineteen dissertations dealing withteacher education in the foreign languagefield could be found: of these, ten deal withsecondary teacher education. This large pertentage is not surprising, since most under-graduate ethic:Him' programs in all subjectareas aim toward the training and certifica-tion of high school teachers. What is somewhat surprising. however, is that there arc notmore dissertations on elementary level teacher.training programs, considering the numberof studies in the CURRICULUM categoryconcerned with. FLES. and considering theemphasis that has been placed on FLEE sincethe early 1950's.

There is a siceable number of dissertationsdealing witlt specific teacher-education pro-grams includino three that arc toncernedwith the results of NDEA- sponsored programs(Misty. 628: Ilambas, 629: Rasmussen. 6.16).Four dissertations (Busse. 630: Knop, 633:Star, 635: Barron, 637) take up the subjectof "Methods" courses in teacher educationprograms: only one discusses the role of training in linguistics for foreign language leach.ers (Eddy. 631).

Analyses of performance criteria for foreignlanguage leachers are few in number and arerestricted to specific aspects of the teachingprofession. Barcelona (6.10) discusses the be-havioral competencies of teachers who use

the language laboratory. Sorohan (618) pre.sons a series of guidelines for the develop-1111011 of programs for training secondary-levelSpanish teachers. Vinson (650) analyzes theproblems faced by be secondary teach-ers and suggests activities for supervisors andinservice traitr:ly, of teachers. Campbell(611) suggests in his research the practiceswhich secondary teachers could use to intprove their teaching. However, there seemsto he little research which presents a theoretical basis for the development of foreignlanguage teacher-training programs at any orall academic levels. As in the case of disserta-tions under CURRICULUNI. research inteacher education is fragmented into studiesof particular problems or particular geographical areas. There is a need for broaderresearch on overall teacher competencies andon criteria developed in specific programs.

N1ETHODS IN FOREIGN LANGUAGETEACH I NG

This section is divided into two subhead-ings, Theory aud Applinition. As a rule thedivision between the two was made on thespecificity of the target population of eachdissertation study. Where a study was gearedfor a particular group or academic level, itwas placed tinder A pplication. Otherwise itwas placed under Theory. Both subheadingswere again divided according to the languageskill toward which the particular method wasdirected: Listening, Speaking, Rending,Writing, and Grannnar. General was used toindicate those dissertations which discuss twoor more skills.

In the field of methodology, imbalance indoctoral research is evidenced by the meageramount of material on each of the four basiclanguage skills (listening, speaking, reading.writing), and upon the analytical skills suchas a grammar or vocabulary building. Thework done on specific skills, does, however, pin down particula problems for analysis.Under Listening, Henning (663) desiribes aprogram for phoneme discrimination trainingin teaching French. Hatfield (689) discusses

10

the value of supplemental training for stu-dents weak in the skills of sound discrimina-tion and sound-symbol association. Lipton090) compares two methods in the teachingof listening comprehension to FLS students. These three dissertations are all diat werefound dealing specifically with listening.

Dissertations on speaking, of course, relyupon students' ability to correctly articulatewhat they hear in the foreign language. Here ten titles were found, None, however, appear to treat theoretical bases or perfor-mance objectives in their research. Nlost seem

to be experimental studies of a particular meth-od on a pa rticidar speaking aspect, such as cor-rect pronunciation of foreign language pho-nemes (Hammerly, 661; Lieblich, 605; Strain,667), diction for college students of voice(Capps, 691), production of foreign dialects(Jacoby, 69.1), and pronunciation combinedwith a graphemic system (Muller, 666; Herold,693). There are none that treat methodologydealing with longer utterances, such as sen-tences in the foreign language, or extendedspeaking, such as dialogues or conversation.

Reading is taken up in only four disserta-tions. Hanna (697) analyzes reading errors ofAmerican college students of Arabic andmakes proposals for teaching reading in Ara-bic. Demers (668) discusses silent reading inFrench and English in relation to certain stn.dent factors (sex, lingual ability, and mentalability). Parent (669) compares three meth-ods of teaching reading to college students ofFrench: bilingual parallel-column readings, direr t reading of French, and using the lan-guage laboratory to improve reading in theforeign language. A. Smith (670) comparesreading instruction in English and in foreignlanguages. Of these lour, those by Hanna andParent seem to yield the most informationabout the comparative methods dealing withreading.

Only one dissertation was found on writ-ing, that by Jackson (671) on the develop-ment of the writing skill in English and Span-ish. Clearly more research on the develop-ment of writing skills is needed.

FEACHING ENGLISH 'FO SPEAKERSOE OTHER LANGUAGES

'Phis large section deals with programs, courses, and methods designed specifically toteach the English language to speakers of oth-er languages. The majority of dissertationsfound here have curricular topics, hut be.

cause of the singularly large number of suchdissertations, it was felt that giving them acategory separate Iron! CURRICULUM orME:11101)S would make them readily iden-tifiable to those working in ESOL programs.

The titles are arranged according to thestudent's native language As in the case ofBILINGUALISM, the Ia gest single group oftitles (17) concerns nature speakers of Span-ish. A special group entitled English (nottstandard) was inchuled because of a numberof studies which concern subjects who speakwhat is a nowstandard version of .English.

usually a Black dialect.

EQU I PM ENT

Titles in this section were divided underthe subheadings of inAiruction and Rest:inchmarl Development. Dissertations listed underthe former deal with the use of electronic me.dia (hardware) in specific instructional situa-tions: those included in the latter subheadingdeal with equipment in the theoretical or de-elopmenial stage. offering no specific refer-

ence to its use in courses, programs, or in-structional surroundings, even though suchsettings might have been nsed to test out theparticular equipment. In both areas, theoreti-cal or practical, the language laboratory is

the dominant theme; it is the topic of thirteen

of a total of thirty dissertations. The use oftelevision in foreign language learning is themain subject of four dissertations (Behmer,792; Gunther, 803; McCombs, 811: Patterson,805), and it is handled to a lesser degree in

several other dissertations. Although a num-ber of studies deal with television, the conypuler (Abboud, 790; Lippert, 80.1), the radio(Entezar, 800; Garfinkel, 801), aful the tele-phone (P. Smith, 819). the language labors-

xii Doctoral Dissertations in Modern Language Education

tory has enjoyed the greatest popularity as adissertation topic, and it appears that othermedia should be researched for their in-creased use and effectiveness in foreign lan-guage instruction.

TESTING THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Research in this area concerns the evalua-tion of students within a foreign languageprogram. The subheading Course Content in-dicates those studies dealing strictly with eval-uation within a specific course of instruction;Student and Instructional Factors lists disser-tations related to the aptitude, achievement, and placement of students in languagecourses and programs. The majority (14 of

21) come under the latter category; four dealwith the measurement of foreign language ap-titude prior to a course of study, five with themeasurement of foreign language achieve-ment after a course of study, four with theplacement of students into specific courses orcurricula, and one (Gagnon, 842) with theevaluation of classroom verbal interactionand student achievement.

While most of the titles in this section dealwith student performance on various measur-ing instruments, little seems to have beenwritten on larger testing programs. The eval-uation of standardized tests in reference totheir validity or their need for revision inlight of uixlated research could certainly bearinvestigation.

12

HOW TO USE THE BIBLIOGRAPHY

MI titles arc numbered consecutively. Thetwelve major sections are further divided intocenter column headings. Most sections haveonly two or three center column headings.while others. such as LINGUISTICS have asmany as forty. However, only in the case of thePHYSIOLOGY AND PSYCHOLOGY OFLANGUAGE LEARNING, METHODS INFOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING, andTESTING THE FOREIGN LANGUAGEsections are further divisions (bold face head-ings) used. Because of the relatively small num-ber of titles collected, further subdivisions inthe other sections were considered unnecessary.

Cross references are gathered at the end of

either center column heading or a bold faceheading. These arc listed by number only, and preceded by "Sri.' also," or "See," if thereare no other entries. Thus, finding a particu-lar reference or cross reference is made as easyas possible, once a reader determines whichsection covers his particular research interest.

Since all references were found in DAIDAI,there is no further notation of this in the bib-liography. Each entry is given according tothe following format: name of researcher, ti-tle of the dissertation, volume and year of theDA /DA/ entry, page reference in DA/W1/,and the university where the dissertation waswritten.

About ERIC Educational Resources Information CenterERIC is a nationwide. U. S. Office of Eduction sponsored. information system designed to serveand advance American education. Its basic objective is to provide information on significant cur-rent documents and to make them available, either through normal publication channels orthrough the ERIC Document Reproduction Service. ERIC Clearinghouses, each focused onseparate subject-matter area, seek to acquire, select, abstract, index, store, retriese, and disseminateinformation about educational research and resources.

About MLA/ER/C. The Modern Language Association of America conducts the ERIC Clearing.house responsible for the collection and dissemination of educational information on languagesand linguistics. This includes information on instructional methodology, psychology of languagelearning, presentation of the cultural and intercultural content, application of linguistics. curricu-lar problems and developments, and teacher training and qualifications specific to the teaching oflanguages. Also included are reports or documents concerned with the language teacher and researcher in the language sciences and those dealing with psycholinguistics, theoretical and appliedlinguistics, language pedagogy, bilingualism, and instructional materials related to commonly anduncommonly taught languages, including English for speakers of other languages.

Research in Education (RIE). The comprehensive source of information about all current documentaccessions is RIE, a monthly catalogue which presents bibliographical information, abstracts, andprices of documents processed by all the ERIC Clearinghouses. This basic reference tool should beavailable in any education library. (Yearly subscription is: domestic, 521.00; foreign. $26.25. Checkor money order should be sent to the U. S. Government Printing Office, Washington, 1). C. 20402.)

ERIC Document Reproduction Service (EDRS). Most documents which ERIC announces in RIEare permanently archived in the EDRS, from which copies may be purchased in microfiche or inprinted out "hard copy." Microfiche is inexpensive and easily stored, but requires access to amicrofiche reader. Hard copy is a paper photo copy or facsimile of the original document. It has apaper cover and is not hard bound. (MLA/ERIC is not the EDRS. The address for orders is EDRS.P.O. Drawer 0, Bethesda, Md. 20014.)

Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE). More than 500 educational periodicals and approximately 1,000 articles are indexed monthly. A main entry section and subject, author, andsource journal indexes are provided. Index subject headings are consistent with those in RIE;unlike RIE, abstracts are not included. Articles cited arc available neither in microfiche nor hardcopy from EDRS. Annual and semiannual cumulations arc also available. (Yearly subscription is$39.00". semi-annual and annual cumulative indexes to monthly subscribers,$40.00: check or moneyorder should be sent to CCM Information Corporation. P.O. Box 659. FDR Station. New York.N. Y. 10022.)

Regular Communication Channels. The official journal of the American Council on the Teachingof Foreign Languages, Foreign Language Annals (FLA), regularly includes a section on ERIC.related activities prepared by the MLA/ERIC Clearinghouse. This material reviews significantdevelopments in foreign language teaching and is of interest to teachers, administrators, research-ers, public officials, commercial and industrial organizations, and the public. The TESOI. Quarter.ly also contains regular listings of ERIC accessions dealing with the teaching of English to speakersof other languages.

Annual Bibliography on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. MLA/ERIC supports the preparationof an annual bibliography of professional and pedagogical documents in collaboration with theAmerican Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and the University of Minnesota: it isprinted in the May issue of FLA.

Lists of ERIC Documents on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. MLA/ERIC prepares such cata-logues, each compiling all foreign language teaching documents which have become available fromthe EDRS since the previous list, whether accessioned by MLA/ERIC or any other ERIC Clear-inghouse. The lists include bibliographical data, microfiche and hard copy costs, and citations ofERIC.prepared abstracts. These lists appear regularly in the October and March issues of FLA.Special MLA ERIC Reports. MLA/ERIC regularly sponsors the preparation of analyses on specialtopics, including detailed treatments of substantial problems in "state -of- the -art" papers. specialbibliographies, and a continuing series of ERIC Focus Reports on the Teaching of Foreign Lan.guages, each providing succinctly detailed, recent information on a specific problem or issue inforeign language teaching (with a short list of further readings) addressed to classroom teachersand school administrators. FLA carries information about special MLA/ERIC reports.

Direct Information Services. MLA/ERIC can provide only very limited services to individuals andagencies. The Clearinghouse is not staffed to provide individually tailored bibliographies, but itwill offer whatever relevant "shelf" items or references may be available.
