a. Butuan City
Butuan City has long been known to be abundant with Sago palm. Different barangays
were visited to confirm its presence and to conduct characterization of the environment where
Sago palm thrive together with Project II.2. The field surveys in Butuan City were conducted last
February 24 and March 24-25, 2012. The barangays in Butuan City found to have vast
presence of Sago palm are: Banza, Mahay, Baan, and Ambago. Mostly of Sago palm in these
areas are in rosette stage with few bole formation and fruit ripening stages. They are located in
flat areas and adjacent to rice fields and creeks.

b. Santiago
Several sago clusters were observed at Barangay Tagbuyakan, Santiago in the province
of Agusan del Norte but only five sago clusters were surveyed because the area is infected with
schistosomiasis. Most of the Sago palms in this area are in rosette and bole formation stages
and are located in swampy area beside the national road and some are located at the foot of the
mountain. The substrates are mostly grasses and are submerged in water. The surveys in
Santiago were undertaken on May 27, 2012, July 20-24, 2012, and on June 12-19, 2013
(together with other municipalities).

d. Kitcharao
Several barangays in the municipality of Kitcharao also has presence of Sago palm.
These barangays are: Canaway, Jaliobong, and San Roque. The Sago palms in this
municipality are mostly rosettes and are located adjacent to rice fields and water source are
available nearby (e.g. creeks, canals). The surveys in Kitcharao were undertaken on May 27,
2012, July 20-24, 2012, and on June 12-19, 2013 (together with other municipalities).

2. Surigao del Norte
The survey in Surigao del Norte was made to confirm the satellite image-derived
possible Sago palm locations.
The team first made a courtesy visit to the Provincial Agriculturist, Mr. Gromyko A.
Geraldino and Ms. Ruby-Ann S. Lagahit. During the meeting, they informed the team that they
have no knowledge about the presence of Sago palms in the province. They pointed out that
only nipa and coconut are the dominant palm in their province.

Just to validate the information gathered from the provincial agriculturist office and with
the hope that maybe there are Sago palms in this province (as obtained from the satellite image
analysis) but the people are only not familiar, the team proceeded on to visit the different
municipalities in the province, specifically those containing the detected possible locations.
Only those municipalities along the road were visited. The team passed through the
municipalities of Place, Gigaquit, Claver, Sison, Surigao City, Mainit, Bacuag and Taganaan. It
was observed that indeed nipa palm is very vast in the different municipalities of this province,
followed by coconut. Most of the detected possible locations of Sago palms were actually
coconut.
There are only three small Sago stands confirmed during this survey at this province.
They were found at Barangay Hinatigan in the municipality of Bacuag, in Barangay Pananay-an
in the municipality of Placer and in Barangay San Isidro in the municipality of Gigaquit. The
Sago palm stand in Brgy. Hinatigan is so small that it was no longer included in the statistics of
confirmed Sago palm stands.

Based on the interview with the owner, they just brought the Sago suckers from Butuan
City and planted it in their land here in Surigao del Norte. They planted it beside creeks and rice
fields. The visit to this province was conducted last July 23-29, 2012.
3. Surigao del Sur
a. Lianga
Sago palms were confirmed in Brgy. Liatimco, Lianga, Surigao del Sur. In this barangay,
Sago palm clusters were found to be the densest among all the visited Sago palm. One cluster
here has a density of 34 Sago at rosette stage per square meter.
Surveyed Sago palms in Lianga are only those located along the road. The substrate of
Sago areas are mostly grasses and are submerged in water. The survey in Lianga was
conducted within the period April 30 - May 13, 2012.

b. Tagbina
The survey in Tagbina, Surigao del Sur was conducted within the period April 30 - May
13, 2012. During the survey, Sago palms in bole formation in Barangay Quezon in Tagbina
were busted by typhoon Sendong, however, rosettes are intact.
Similar to those in Lianga, Sago palms that were surveyed in Tagbina were only those
located near the road. Mixed rosette, bole formation and fruit ripening stages are found in the
area. The substrate are mostly grasses and wet.

4. Agusan del Sur
a. Prosperidad
The field survey in Prosperidad started with a courtesy visit to the Provincial Planning
and Development Office (PPDO) of Agusan del Sur. The group was warmly received by Ms.
Cynthia Lumanpa, the Planning Officer IV of the said office. The group was then referred to
BAPAO and EIPADS Inc. in Bunawan, Agusan del Sur, the two agencies can provide more
information regarding the locations of Sago palm in the province of Agusan del Sur. The said
visit was conducted last February 20, 2012.

b. Talacogon and La Paz (in Agusan Marsh)
The surveys in Talacogon, La Paz and Rosario, Agusan del Sur was conducted from
February 20-24, 2012. The survey in the municipality of Talacogon started with a courtesy visit
to the municipal mayor where we met the Executive Secretary of the mayor (Figure 10). During
the visit, the group (consisting of Caraga State University and UP Diliman teams) was informed
that there are Sago palms in the different barangays of Talacogon such as: Desamparados,
Maharlika and Labnig. The team then proceeded to the different barangays together with the
local hire from the Municipal Agriculture Office. For Barangay Labnig, the visited Sago palm
stands are illustrated in Figure 11.
There was a confusion with regards to the confirmed Sago palm stands in Barangay
Maharlika and Desamparados. When the GPS coordinates of the stands were overlaid on the
satellite images and on maps, it was found that the stand are actually located in Brgy. Comota,
La Paz, Agusan del Sur. La Paz is a municipality just south of Talacogon. This is illustrated in
Figure 12.
From Talacogon municipality, the group travelled by boat through the Agusan River in
order to reach thevast Sago stands in the so-called "Brgy. Maharlika". Along the way, we
gathered information from local hires that the whole area of "Barangay Maharlika" including
other barangays located nearby the Agusan River is totally inundated during the wet season
making them the so called “floating barangays”. When this time comes, they become very
dependent on the Sago palm for food and use it as a material in making their houses float. They
access the Sago stands by boat.

c. Bunawan
From Talacogon, the group proceeded to Bunawan, Agusan del Sur. The first survey in
this municipally was conducted on February 22, 2012.
Along the way to the municipal hall of Bunawan, several clusters of Sago stands were
found and are situated nearby the national highway and residential areas. Upon the arrival in
the Bunawan Municipal Hall, the group immediately proceeded to the Municipal Planning and
Development Office and there the group was met by Engr. Joey H. Pascua, the Assistant
Municipal Planning Officer. After the meeting, the group was accompanied by Mr. Walter Lara
and Mr. Nick Medina, both from the Planning and Development Office of Bunawan, to visit the
office of Empowering Indigenous People of Agusan del Sur, Inc. (EIPADS, Inc.). The EIPADS
director, Mr. Zotero Estremos welcomed the group and he recommended that the the group
should visit the barangays of Bunawan who is known to contain vast areas of Sago palm. These
barangays are: Poblacion, Mambalili, and Nueva Era. However, when overlaid on the map, the
vast Sago stands are located within the barangays of Poblacion and San Teodoro only.
The way towards the Sago stands is not easy since no paved access road is available.
The team needed to ride a boat and pass through the muddy rice fields and peat lands in order
to reach the Sago stands in the area.
The Sago stands in Bunawan the second vastest Sago stands that the team were able
to locate(second to that in Comota, La Paz). All stages of Sago palm can be found in the area
such as rosette, bole formation, inflorescence, and fruit ripening. The substrates are mostly
grasses and very wet.
Follow-up surveys were conducted between April 28-May 13, 2012.

5. Misamis Oriental
The team conducted survey in this province last June 9, 2012 - June 23, 2012.
The team started the survey by visiting the Provincial Capitol of Misamis Oriental and
there the team met Mr. Danilo Maputol and Mrs. Venus Sena. They informed the team about the
possible locations of Sago palm in the province. This information is only based on their
knowledge as a local/resident because there are no available data compiled in their office
regarding Sago palm.
There are Sago stands that were observed in this province but only in small clusters.
These Sago palms are located in: Barangay Loguilo in the municipality of Alubijid, Barangay
Tabok and Manaol in the municipality of Lagonglong, Barangay Poblacion in the municipality of
El Salvador, Barangay Katipunan and Poblacion 1 in the municipality of Villanueva, and
Barangay Luz Banzon in the municipality of Jasaan. Mostly these Sago palms are located in flat
areas and within or beside a creek or rice fields.

7. Bukidnon
From Misamis Oriental, the group made a stopover at the Provincial Agriculturist Office
of Bukidnon. The team was received by Mrs. Merlie Muring who informed the group that base
on their data in the office, Sago palms are not thriving in their province since Bukidnon is a
mountainous and highly elevated area. To confirm this, Mrs. Muring referred the group to the
Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office. The team met For. Leonardo Buted and
he confirmed that there are no Sago palms in the Province of Bukidnon. To further confirm this
information, For. Buted referred the group to Mt. Kitanglad Protection Program office but the
same remark was heard from the personnel of the said office.
The group also went to Central Mindanao University and there they met Forester Alex
Olpenda and Dr. George Puno, both faculty member of the College of Forestry of the said
university. During the meeting, For. Olpenda and Dr. Puno informed the group that they found
no Sago palm in the Province of Bukidnon.
After all the inquiries and meetings conducted at the different offices at Bukidnon, the
team decided to proceed to the Province of Davao. Along the way and to the team’s surprise,
there was a very small stand of Sago along the road in Barangay Kipolot, Quezon, Bukidnon.
Upon the interview with the owner, the Sago sucker came from Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.
The owner planted the Sago at the middle of a small creek.

There were also Sago palms found in Davao del Norte. They are located in Barangay La
Paz in the municipality of Carmen. The Sago palms in this area are located along the road and
are planted near to rice fields or beside a creek.
In Mati City, Davao Oriental, the residents living near Sago areas are trying to get rid of
the Sago palms because according to them it became the sanctuary of rats and snakes which
poses danger to their families. Sago palms in Mati were found in Barangays Badas, Tagawisan,
and Bilawan. The names of the barangays are based on the interviewed locals. But when the
locations of the stands were plotted on the map, they were located in Barangays of Sanghay
and Dahican (City Proper), Mati City.
In Banaybanay, Davao Oriental, Sago palms were found in Brgy. Punta Linao.

Victor V. Geralde, the Provincial Agriculturist. During the visit, the team was informed that the
municipalities with presence of Sago palm are Argao, Carcar City and Alegria. The vastest
according to him can be found in the municipality of Argao. Aside from Carcar and Argao, there
are also various Sago palm clusters in other municipalities such as in Sibonga, Samboan, and
Alegria.
Sago stands in Sibonga were located in Barangay Bagacay. In Argao, Sago palms were
located in the barangays of Bulasa, Jampang, Langtad, Talaytay, Canbanua, Poblacion and
Tulic. In the city of Carcar, Sago palms were located in Barangay Liburon and Valladolid. In the
municipality of Samboan, Sago palms were located in Barangay Poblacion, Tangbo and
Dalahikan while Sago stands in Alegria were located in Barangay Montpeller and Guadalupe.
Generally, dry environment was observed in areas where Sago palms are located
especially in Argao. It was also observed that although Sago palms are located in relatively dry
area, there are visible available water supplies nearby. The Sago palms observed in Barangay
Montpeller and Guadalupe in Alegria were in highly elevated areas.

4. Bohol
Bohol province is known to have rough topography with relatively dry soil, mostly
limestone. Although there are no written reports about the presence of Sago palm in the
province, the team was interested to determine if there are indeed Sago palms in the province
based on the satellite image analysis. The visit to Bohol was also decided to be done because
of the initial result of the suitability analysis where some portion of Bohol were detected as
“suitable” for Sago palm to grow.
The team started the survey in Bohol by visiting first the Provincial Agriculture Office
located at Tagbilaran City, Bohol. During the courtesy visit, the team presented the objective of
the project and the purpose of the said visit; which is to validate and visit possible Sago palm
locations in the province. Several personnel of the said office gladly welcomed the team and
generously shared their time during discussion but they pointed out that they have no
information about the presence of Sago palm in their province. But still the Bohol Provincial
Agriculture Office recommended the group to visit the different cities and municipalities of Bohol
in order to be sure. An endorsement letter addressed to the different city/municipal agriculturist
was also handed to the group.
The team visited several cities and municipalities of Bohol. With the help of personnel
from the agriculture office, local hire, and pictures of Sago palm (at different stages), several
inquiries from the local residents were made. During the five (5) days survey and visit to the
different cities/municipalities, only two (2) small Sago stands were found. The first stand was
seen last May 17, 2013 at the Municipality of Loay. It was located in Barangay Alegria Norte
along a small creek with visible water. The owner said the Sago palm was already there as long
as they remember. The main use of Sago palm to the owner is only for shingles which they use
for house roofing.
The second and last Sago stand the team saw was in Hinlayagan, Barangay Ilaud in the
Municipality of Trinidad last May 20, 2013. The Sago stand is located adjacent to a rice field
and according to the land owner, it was planted by his son but the land owner has no knowledge
where did his son obtain the sucker. He also informed the team that the Sago stand was
actually bigger than its present area, but because of rice field expansion, the Sago palms were
burned.
