interdisciplinary approach to learning. Academic input is delivered through four type of

courses – Core, Elective, Ability Enhancement and Skill Enhancement. Core courses are

compulsory for all participants as a requirement to complete the programme in a said

discipline of study. The Elective courses which can be chosen from a pool of papers may be

‘Discipline Centric/Specific’ & Generic Elective. Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses

(AECC) are based upon the content that leads to knowledge enhancement, for example :

English Communication, Environment Science/Studies, etc. Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC)

provide value based and/or skill based knowledge and may content both Theory and

Lab/Training/Field Work. the main purpose of these courses is to provide students life- skills

in hands – on mode so as to increase their employability.

Keeping in view the National and International scenario, the University is actively pursuing

continuous updating of teaching curricula, designing courses on emerging areas and

identifying research priorities with a focus on the problems and needs of the people.

In order to retain the focus of the students on the academic programmes and to compliment

it with relevant work experience during the two-month long summer break, the University

has introduced a scheme of internship to all its students. The main objective is to provide an

edge to the students to ensure better placement opportunities for themselves on completion

of their degrees. This will also give a feel for the work environment in organisations of the

type they would possibly be associated in their professional careers. The organisations

facilitating internship cover a broad spectrum of the industry, government, academic

institutions, health institutions, regulatory bodies, NGOs, media etc.

The respective departments, in association with the facilitating organisations, are monitoring

the work and regularity of the internees. It is also proposed to take feedback from the

manager rather than a simple traditional manager.

Since, its inception, the EDC is actively engaged in achieving its objectives through several

ways like conducting entrepreneurial workshops, exercises, seminars, entrepreneur's talks

presentations of individual milestones of their projects, moderates discussions, consults in all

kinds of problem-solving and seeking for solutions, lectures on topics that are selected in

plenary discussions with the students and conform to the curriculum. They also suggest topics

for lecturing and discussion according to the curriculum. The teachers adopt presentation and

group discussion method to make the topic more interesting. The teachers frequently give

the illustrations and discuss the topics to acquaint the students with the practical insight of

the subject. Efforts are made to develop use of library for research and study. Reading habits

are developed by giving suitable assignments.

30. Feedback System: First Hand Improvement

The University follows the mechanism of student evaluation of teachers to improve the

teaching - learning process. The University has developed questionnaire suitable to all

departments to undertake student feedback on courses, departments, teachers, campus, and

32. Training & Placement - First Step to the World of Work

Placements at the University are a regular activity. The University has a dedicated ' Training &

Placement cell' headed by Training and Placement Officer, along with the alumni of the

Institute and senior faculties, aims at making available quality placement opportunities for

students and at maintaining linkages with Human Resource Departments in the Industry and

Research Organizations.

Reputed industrial houses across the country visit our University regularly for the campus

recruitment programs. The placement cell coordinates quite well with the corporate sector

and provides well-developed infrastructure to facilitate the campus selection programs. The

cell maintains a very cordial relationship with all the recruiting industries and also prepares

the recruited candidates to face the competitive world.

It regularly organizes interviews and group discussions to familiarize students with standard

selection procedures and Campus interviews in association with large industrial and

commercial firms and corporate bodies. Different renowned organizations are invited to

participate in the placement process wherein students appear for recruitment process of

their choice of organization. As a result, students are benefited with progressively

remunerative and rewarding placements in reputed organizations.

The University has also maintained close linkage with industries and other organizations, so

that students of various disciplines can visit their plants to get a direct insight into the multi-

functional processes at these organizations. In-plant training is also organized as per the

course curriculum. Last year many fruitful training sessions and tours were conducted. Our

treasured alliances with top companies have given lot of exposure of corporate world to our

students. Some of the corporate leaders visited University and shared their experiences with

the students.

17

The placement cell also organizes many extra and co-curricular activities for the students. The

cell counsels the students for career opportunities, conducts mock interviews, arranges group

discussion, etc. The Cell frequently organizes, the entrepreneurship development programs,

awareness programs on competitive examination etc. They are also given an opportunity to

interact with the industry personnel during pre placement visit and at many other occasions.

With the talent crunch in the industry, the relationship between the University and industries

was better. The industries not only visited the University campus for summer and final

placement but also for ongoing mutually beneficial relationship.

Placement of the students of the Jagannath University is always on the top priority on the

academic part of the University. It is an ongoing process with key emphasis on the right

Placement for the right candidate. Students of the Jagannath University are exposed to

maximum number of Placement Events to facilitate the selection of the students in right

companies.

The process of Placement Events starts in July at the beginning of the session and completes

with the session ending in June. In the Academic session students have to undergo a planned

and methodical curriculum for the branches of Engineering, Architecture, Management and

Law. Students are trained in the soft skills and presentations to facilitate in the selection of

the candidates with respect to the companies.

Students of the University, enriched their technical knowledge by visiting various industrial

units -power generation units, cement plants and auto-engine manufacturing units, Krishi

Vigyan Kendras, Courts, Open Jain and Historical places, etc.

33. Linkage /Tie up with the Industry

The University has close linkage with the industry as it is absolutely essential especially for the

technical education to be purposeful. This helps the faculty to familiarize themselves with

industrial practices and share the same with the students in the form of case studies to make

teaching-learning interesting. To have linkage with the industry, opportunities are provided

to the teachers to 'work' with industries for short durations. Industries on the other hand

offer internships to students to have them on-job experience. Therefore, industry and

academia collaboration is the way forward to achieve excellence in higher education.

Researchers are encouraged to work on practical problems faced by the industry and work on

it that will be fruitful for both research and industry.

18

34. Co-Curricular Activities - Overall Learning

In order to ensure that the students have effective learning experience the University

organizes debates, essay writing, elocution and other competitions according to academic

calendar to improve and sustain the academic quality of the students. The faculty ensures

that the students have effective learning experiences through their problem solving skills. The

students who are given the freedom to explore areas based on their personal interests, and

who are accompanied in their learning by a supportive, understanding facilitator, not only

achieve superior academic results but also develop socially and grow personally. A well

maintained, separate computer laboratory with internet and reprographic facility is

accessible to the students. They can access latest changes and developments taking place in

higher education across the globe.

Extension Activities

Various extension activities like AIDS awareness, Survey Work on Below Poverty Line Groups,

Blood Donation Camps, Anti- dowry movement, Environmental Awareness, water quality

monitoring were organized. Various community capacity building and livelihood programmes

including those related to gender and health were also organized. In an effort towards

development of social sensitivities and good citizenship qualities among the students most of

the departments integrate community outreach programmes into their curricular activities.

35. School of Distance Learning

The School of Distance Learning of the University was established in 2010. The objective was

to take university based education beyond the four walls of the University. The School has

been functioning effectively catering to the educational needs of employees, house wives and

such of those who are interested to improve qualifications in different disciplines. It

continues to do so and fulfils a prime social responsibility of providing education at the door

step for those who are unable to access formal education. The School offers 5 courses - 3

year BBA and 3 year BCA at Undergraduate level, 2 year MBA and 3 year MCA at PG level and

1 year Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Applications, duly approved by the UGC Distance

Education Bureau.

36. Faculties

The University has taken all measures to effectively address its goals and objectives by

providing excellent instruction competent faculty and staff and by making the needed

infrastructure available to its students and researchers. In keeping with this, the University
