Annual Report2020

A Messagefrom Our CEO

There is no doubt that 2020 was a hard year. It was a year full of fear, uncertainty, and new challenges for all of us. But for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Philadelphia, it was also something else.

It was a year that compelled us to be creative in our compassion—to adapt and evolve on the fly. And ultimately, I’m proud to say, it was a year that strengthened us.

Our mission is to create a community of comfort and hope for families with seriously ill children. I am so proud of our community—our supporters, volunteers, board, staff, neighbors, and corporate partners—who stood on the front lines and worked together to ensure that each and every family who came to us found the support they needed.

We started the year with almost 100% occupancy of our 98 guest-ready bedrooms in our new tower at the Chestnut Street House. With work nearing completion on the renovation of our additional 29 rooms, we were preparing to reach full capacity. The expansion of the Chestnut Street House was allowing us to double the number of families served before the pandemic took a foothold in our region.

Then, in a matter of days, everything changed. We had 200 residents under our care when the pandemic rumor became a terrifying reality—especially for the immunocompromised kids in our care.

We implemented enhanced health and safety protocols that included mask wearing, testing, enhanced cleaning, temperature checks, and social distancing in common spaces. Volunteer activity within our Houses was put on hiatus and staff who were able to work remotely did so. Every step of the way we were in constant contact with our hospital partners.

We were able to implement a number of creative strategies to continue serving our guests. Our Family Support Services team modified developed activities that families could do together safely in their rooms or in our dining and outdoor areas where social distancing was possible. From the safety of their own homes or spread out on golf courses, hundreds of supporters participated in fundraising events like the Philalympics, the Hit ‘Em for the House Golf Outing, and our annual Champions of Hope gala.

In August, 133 campers and dozens of volunteer counselors logged on for a week of virtual Ronald McDonald Camp. Each camper received an activity box full of all the supplies they needed for the week. Instead of cabins full of bunk beds and a full dining hall, campers participated in numerous activities with their Camp friends via an online portal. From art projects, to photography lessons, and cooking class, to a video talent show, campers were able to spend much desired time together. Even though our volunteer Guest Chef program was suspended, with the help of some very creative donors, we were even able to support local restaurants who provided special meals for our families. We also were the recipient of incredibly generous gifts of fresh food from area stores and restaurants who were themselves struggling. Our kitchen team remained strong, serving breakfast, grab-and-go lunch, and dinner at both of our house locations.

Through coordination with in-kind food donors, we were able to box and distribute more than 28,000 pounds of food to community based organizations in the West and North Philadelphia communities. And during the Thanksgiving Holiday, we distributed 75 food boxes to our former guest families in need.

For families dealing with a serious pediatric illness, there have been no lockdowns—care and treatment must go on. Thousands of families need to travel for life saving treatments, complex surgeries, and every day new babies are born needing to come to Philadelphia for the best NICU care. On behalf of these families, I express my heartfelt thanks to our community.

Your compassion, dedication, and generosity make it possible for us to fulfill our mission each and every day. I hope you will take great pride as you read the following pages, knowing that your involvement with Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Philadelphia Region has helped carry us through a challenging year.

Meet Our Families

The Yan Family

When Claire and Ming Yan’s twin daughters, Amelia and Alicia, were born prematurely, they were sent from their hometown of Jersey City, NJ, to the NICU at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. For over 6 months, the Yans would call the Ronald McDonald House on Chestnut Street in Philly their home away from home.

“Staying at the House has really put our mind at ease, because it frees us from daily routines, so we can focus on our babies. We are thankful for all of the financial and emotional support that the Ronald McDonald House gives us. Otherwise, we couldn’t pull through with our babies in the NICU,” says Ming.

Claire adds, “You know, when you are going through a difficulty and you get help from people, it makes such a big difference. And all the gifts, everyday—small or big—it just warms your heart. To know that so many people care about you...before we never knew that. And now we find life has a different meaning for us.”

The family has received good news, and their daughter Alicia has been released from the NICU and able to join them at the House. “Her twin sister, Amelia, is not too far behind,” Ming says.

The Giordano Family

Easton Giordano was just 8 days old when he received his first surgery. Although his family is from Berwick, PA, he had to be born in Philadelphia, where doctors would be able to treat him as he was born with a hole in his diaphragm. In addition to having arrived nine months early, he had to receive 3 major surgeries before he was 4 months old so that he could survive.

Erica, Eaton’s mother, stayed at the Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia throughout the months he was at the hospital. She was glad she would not have to face a financial burden, saying “I’m able to take care of my son and not have to worry about being in an immense amount of debt just to be able to be here with my child—while he is going through probably the hardest thing any of us is going to go through.”

Beyond the financial support, Erica says that “It’s been relieving to be able to go sleep and shower, and not have to stay in a hospital, because the nights I have stayed over, I have not slept. It’s been really nice to have a little bit of time to reclaim myself. Most people think about how the baby is doing but the House staff always makes sure that I am doing okay, and checks if there is anything they can do for me to make my day better.”

Erica was ecstatic when she was able to take her baby home. “He is the feistiest but happiest baby I know. Seeing him look up at me and smile is wonderful. I think ‘How are you this happy with everything that is going on”.

Ronald McDonald Family Rooms

Ronald McDonald Care Mobile

The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, operated in partnership with St. Christopher’s Foundation for Children, provides comprehensive and continuous oral healthcare to children in North Philadelphia. There is a critical need in this area, and the Care Mobile removes barriers so that children who most need dental and oral health care and treatment can access care and prevent their oral health conditions from worsening. There is currently no other program that provides such services to the youngest residents of North Philadelphia. We visit patients at Head Start communities, early childhood centers, elementary schools, and shelters. The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile is a Dental Home: it provides an ongoing relationship between the dentist and the patient in a continually accessible, family-centered way.

Our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, two at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia—one serving the Oncology Unit and one at the Seashore House—and one serving the Critical Care Unit of St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, extend the comfort and support of our Houses into the hospital by offering quiet and comfortable respite spaces where families can rest and regroup away from the bedside.

Due to covid restrictions, we had to close the space beginning in March 2020.

Ronald McDonald Camp

Every year, our one-week overnight Ronald McDonald Camp, located in the Poconos, provides an opportunity for children with cancer and their siblings to experience the joys of summer camp each August. For the safety of our campers, we held the RMC virtually and provided fun and interactive activities campers could complete at home.

We feel very fortunate that RMC was able to offer virtual summer camp this year. Having a cancer survivor has made us more wary about venturing outside our home during this pandemic. Virtual RMC gave both of our daughters much needed interaction with other children their age -- and they also saw some old friends. They enjoyed their online time very much. We’d like to thank everyone who contributed their time and donations to make it happen. It was a very nice addition to an otherwise very isolated summer. -Parents of an RMC camper

How Does McDonald’s HelpMcDonald’s played a vital role at the inception of the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, the first Ronald McDonald House in the world, which opened on October 15, 1974. After 44 years, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) and our local McDonald’s owner/operators remain committed to supporting our programs.

RMHC of the Philadelphia Region is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that receives less than 10% of its annual revenue from from the owners/operators of the more than 300 McDonald’s Restaurants in the region (including the greater Philadelphia area, Southern New Jersey, and Delaware). This funding comes from in-store canister donations, Shamrock Shake sale proceeds, and other promotions and annual gifts.

The McDonald’s Owner/Operators of the Greater Philadelphia Region involvement extends beyond monetary support as:• McDonald’s owner/operators participate as members of our Board of Directors.• McDonald’s owner/operators and suppliers work to raise money and awareness through promotional and fundraising events.• Local McDonald’s employees are dedicated volunteers.• The remaining 90 percent of our annual budget comes from the generosity of individuals, corporations, and foundations.
