1955. Nomil~ations for inciusion in the series af ter that date cannot be accepted. Any such applications \\,ill necessafily be held over until the following series, many months ahead. Only registered shooters, of course, are eligible and all candidates lnust belong to an affiliated club. The series ~vill s tar t on October 1 and candidates xvill be informed by cir- cular and other information of what i s required. One point to remember i s that all questions on the examina- tion paper must be answered, using one side of the paper only. In the preulous series several candidates used both sides of the paper for their ans\x7ers - this will not be acceptable in the forthcoming series. Questions are also required to be answered in full. A number of candidates in the last series were altogether too brief in their replies and gave the im- pression of trying to short circuit the question. This fault also will not be acceptable in the next series. Answers, approximately 18, must be con~pleted within the time limit allo\\~ed and also must be coinpleted before their home club President. or an official referee examiner a s ap- pointed by the Association. These conditions !\,ill be rigidly adhered to.

Interested clubs are informed that applications for permission to con- duct 1956 Open Championships, that is Commonw%alth, State and -Distl.ict titles, close with the Secretary, A.C.P.T.S.A., Box 20389, G.P.O., Melbourne, C.1, 011 Septe~nber 30. Written applications only. Applica- tions should be written quite apart

f r o ~ n genepal Association business for the reason that same are dealt wit11 by the Executive Committee during i ts October meeting. Which means that any correspo~~dence on the point of championships fol: 1956 should have reference to t h e subject matter mentioned only. If included anlong general matter to the Asso- ciation application i s lilrely to be missed. It i s an Executive Commnit- tee direction that only clubs making application f o r titles mill be con- sidered. In previous years titles have bee11 allocated, in some cases, where no application had been lodged. In future this will not be done. No application ineans no consideration \\,hen the 1956 Allocation comes up for discussion. The full 1956 Cham- pionship Allocation will be published in the 1955 issue of November "News".

By the time this issue reaches readers the 1955 Annual Interstate Match mill be well under wav in the " ~~~ ---- various States. Tasmania \~.ill lead off wit11 the h o l d i ~ ~ g of the Tas- manian section of the match a t the Tasmanian Club's grounds a t St. Leonards, just outside Launceston, on Septe~nber 3. Nenr S m t h Wales

nd Victoria will shoot on the s a n ~ e -. day, i.e. September 17, when the Bathurst Club and Australian Club >\.ill supervise the sections for the States mentioned - al t l~ourh Rxth- - ... urst will hold the eliminat-ion shoot gl1 the day previous, September 16.

~ e r t i s i n g in this issue. Given fair conditions and normal shooting \\.eather, the match proinises to be most interesting and could be the nlost exciting sincs the star t of the competition, \\rhich i s actually State T c a n ~ suprenlacy. All clubs conduct- ing the contests should ensure that only registered shooters a re per- mitted to take part.

A shooter recently inentioiled tn the Association that a club, outside Victoria, conducts all its champion- ships on the regulation automatic tmp, but that i t then reverts to a plus t rap for all club shooting. This action is indeed unusual and not the lcast to say peculiar. Why a club should use a plus t rap in prelerence to an automatic i s hard to under- stand. The automatic t rap is the fairest means of releasing targets and should be used a t all times in order to provide equity of competl- tion. Whilst a plus t rap i s a useful stand-by in case of emergency, i ts fiinctioiis are indecd limited when coinpared with the automatic re- leaser. Clubs are required, by Asso- ciation direction, to use the auto- ~nnt ic t rap in championships and majo~. events.

-4 club has averred that a number of i ts n~elnbers maintained tha t club handicaps "are always 2 yards further back than Association marks". As an instance i t was stated that a "shooter on 16 yards club handicap moves forward 2 yards mhen he colnpetes in an event which

stipulates Association handicaps". There is 110 tie-up between club haridicaps and Association marks, although inany recomn~endatioiis are based on club performnnces, other than that they bear no relation what- ever. Association handicaps a re based on pel.formance, club recom- mendation and mhat is kno\r.n of the particular shooter concerned by the Association officials. Some clubs do not ca-operate fully with the Asso- ciation in forn~arding results and recomn~endations, and this ineans that Association officials are corn- palled to take steps to handicap shooters as considered appropriate. When such action is taken. the \\,hole ... ~~~~~ ~~~~~~ ~ ~~ ~ ~

matter is looked upon froin an Australia-wide ina le as a u~hale and not just a s the marks \\.auld apply to the particular club.

Score sheets received from a club outside Victoria during the month just past revealed the sheets to be harl&d in a somewhat u n u s ~ ~ a l and peculiar style. When a "kill" was gained by the shooter the score sheets showed the letter "I<". -~~~~ ~~~~ ~ ~

whilst for a miss the sheets showed a small dash. This system is rather confusing and irregular. The easiest and sirnplest way to score i s the figure "1" for a kill a;;, "0" for a miss. Recordinr a when a shooter breaks Kis target i s a cum- bersoine method and is certainly not recom~nelided by the Association. Score sheets should be m a ~ k e d in a uniform \<ray and clubs in all States should see to it that their scorers are instructed in the correct way of scoring.

The sympathy of all members of the shooting fraternity i s expressed to the relatives of the above-named who have passed on in recent weeks.

Mr. Parow was one of the veterans of the sport and, in fact, was known among older adherents a s "one of the quarry boys". Mr. Parow shot with the old Nobel Cluh in the late 20's when the rendez- vous of the club was a quarry hole a t West Footscray.

Mr. Neenan was a prominent member of the Tasmanian Gun Cluh a t Launceston and a great worker for the sport in his own way in the Island State. Mr. Neenan's duties took him all over the northern portion of Tasmania and much of the development of new clubs in that area is due to his enterprise.

Mr. Hamilton-Smith was a former President of the Shepparton Club and took a great interest in the sport. He was the donor of the land on which Shepparton Cluh's extensive lay-out now stands. He had extensive dairying interests in northern Victoria. Only last year he took a journey overseas, visiting. many of clubs abroad.

GUN GOSSP by XORTH COUNTRY (in "Shooting Times")

A shooter has conlplaincd that to- wards the cud of this last season his shooting, suddenly and for no appar- ent reason. deteriorated. Up to re- cently he .'was doing very ilicely - shooting as well as ever in spite of advancing years. Then ire began to miss and he adds: "I made a fool of myself a t our last shoot and I hardly feel like n ~ a k i ~ ~ g a repetition of i t ( o r , taking the risk of doing so) agaln. What, if auythmg, do you adrisc me lo do?"

As I see it, his ease is one which is fairly c o m n ~ o ~ ~ to many of us and it shouid not give any ciuse for un- due depressioil. I rather think that he is a bit too conscious of the fact that he is no longer young in years, and is rrachine the staee when lie i l l nlace t h e blame Tor all h ~ s failuris (little or big) on this matter. This is, if I may say so, a mistaken idea based an the belief that "anno 'drlnmini" i s bound to r e t the better ~~- -. ~~~

of you after a certain'jge. This is a false notion ~vhich has been proved to be false over and over again. Be- cause a inan is slowed d0~i.n a bit by increasing years, he has not neces- sarily got to shoot worse.

Shooting is a following ~vl~ich , above all, calls for experience. And in much of it experience is of greater practical use than extreme physical activity and fitness. Up to a point, anyway. The good shot knoxvs where and how to stand, how to take his birds a t the right point and with the minimum of effort. He mav almost

in the sixties, cxpel.ienced rather similar trouble.

Circumstances, I suppose, alter cases, but I have lately been dis- appointed to find that onc o r two friends of my youth have now de- serted the run for the rod. One of them certaiEly was a good shot and might have become first-class. But 110% he is a fisherman ahnost ex- clusively. After a lapse of many vears I met him and exuected to hear all about the shootink he had done. But no - i t was sll about fishing. Much though I respect the followers of the contemplative ar t and much though I like fishing, I xreatlv ureier to shoot. A nun means - :ar il;oce to me than t h i best of rods-it always has done so and i t always will.

Well, I believe that this is largely n matter of convenience. Facilities for shooting may remain unchanged, but a shGter's circumstances -a& these days continually altering and other habits are forced upoil him. Then he finds that fishiun is an ex- cellent sport and so he Gttlcs down to fish. Or of course the reverse may

be compared to the seasoned boxer in the Ging who makes his opponent do the "running around," reserving his energies for what rcally matters.

I doubt if this reader is really deteriorating. I suspect that he was inst "off it" a t the end of the season ,.... .~- -~ ~~~ ~~~~ ~ ~~ ~

and there mas no time left to make good again. There is, however, the chance that his eyesight may have changed in some way-and i t might be advisable for him to have this cheeked up. A relative of mine, when

this is simply due to circun~stances. And since the latter have been scaxcely comfortable these last 15 years or so, changes have to be ex- pected. All the same I am sorry when a friend gives up the gun. Manv a busv man. I know. cannot find "time both to shoot and fish. And. I suppose, i t is easier for a man td fish than to shoot.

So many of my relations have been good v i th bath rod and gun that I have erhaps rather taken i t for grante2 that both these great sports could be follorved a t will. I fear, though, tha t matters are not so simple as tha t today. To follow hot11 sports freely yon need now to be ex- ceptionzilly fortunate. So, as the nett

result, we find people settling for one or the other and considering them- selves lucky to be able t o do t ha t much!

In my own circle of relations the one who is the best shot i s also the best fisherman. He is, I think I call say, nearly first-class a t both these sports. But a s matters are, he has been lucky. Many of us today never enjoy sufficient practice a t either sport. So our potentialities are not developed and nobody can say what might have been. A lot of skill thus goes to seed.

Audiences were very unkind a t the temperance lectures and kept inter- rupting. At last the speaker engaged a former prize-fighter to keep order.

That night he contrasted the con- tent of home life with the squalor of drunkenness.

"What i s it we want when we re- turn home from our daily toil?" he asked. "What do we want to ease our burden, to gladden our hearts, to bring smiles to our faces and joyous songs to our lips?"

He paused fo r effect, and in the silence the voice of the keeper of peace could he heard: "Mind, the first bloke who says beer goes out with a bang!"
