Intermarriage Facts

THE CURRENT STATUS OF INTERFAITH FAMILIES

IN THE CONSERVATIVE MOVEMENT

INTERMARRIAGE FACTS

72% of non-Orthodox Jews who have gotten married since 2000 are intermarried.

Among Americans born before 1948 who had one

Jewish parent, only 25% are Jewish today. By contrast, among adults born after 1983 with one

Jewish parent, over 59% are Jewish today.

In Pittsburgh, only 6% of children of intermarried Jewish households are being raised in another religion.

The Pew study and other research show children

of intermarried parents are much more likely to grow up identifying as Jewish if they are exposed to Jewish educational experiences as children. By

contrast, even if parents intend to raise their children as Jews, those children who do not participate in

Jewish educational programs tend to have significantly weaker ties to the Jewish community

when they become adults.

40% of our newest members (10 out of the 25 who have chosen to join our Beth El family over the last 12 months) are intermarried, as compared to the 10

more who joined us over the previous two years.

THE CONSERVATIVE MOVEMENT TODAY

Believes interfaith marriage can be an affirmation of one’s unique identity, an opportunity for inclusion and new pride in one’s affiliation with Judaism, as we explain and share it with our extended families.

Believes that welcoming the intermarried is not

enough. We must actively outreach to and embrace the intermarried. Will celebrate every

and all marriages involving a Jewish partner and seek to maximize the Jewish engagement of all

such marriages.

We are not looking to change you. We don’t want you to change. We don’t need you to convert. We want you to change us, for the

better. Quoting the late great Fred Rogers, “We like you, just the way you are.” We value and

respect your religious choices!

WE WANT YOU AS YOU ARE

From the President,

Warren Sufrin

We recently finished the Jewish “holiday season” and it’s hard to believe we don’t have another major one until Passover. What in the world will we do with ourselves in the meantime?! You should know we’re not taking any time off. Your vice presidents and your board are actively working on many things to move our congregation forward. New programming is being looked at, based on the input many of you provided, from the survey results. If you still want to be heard, the survey is still active, so visit bethelcong.org, click on Quick Links, and choose Database Update. Many of you also folded down tabs on the Tikun Olam post card. If you haven’t returned yours yet, please do so. Once we hear from you, we’ll definitely pass your name along to those responsible for each area of interest. Some fun fundraisers are in the works. Recently announced is “Pinball and a Pint” on November 15th. And more ideas are out there, so we’ll let you know when we have more concrete plans. Once we do, please respond with your RSVP! Of course, please don’t forget we have Bingo every Tuesday evening. We would love for you to play or volunteer to help. Our Rabbis are in the process of presenting a series of discussions titled “The Current Status of Interfaith Families & The Conservative Movement”. Our first discussion was a Shabbat Lunch and Learn, followed by a Monday Night Wine and Cheese function. In the near future, we’ll also hold a discussion for parents of children in our Religious School. Should you not have had an opportunity to attend one of these functions, or if you haven’t had an opportunity to express your feelings, please get in touch with me via email at [email protected]. I’ll make sure to get back to you as we want to make sure everyone is heard. Warren

Please remember Beth El Congregation with a gift in your will, trust, retirement account, or life insurance policy.

The new year has started off with many exciting programs! Our Kickoff Event, “Cooking in The Kitchen with Deena,” was a huge success along with our Paid-Up Membership Program - ‘Self Defense for All” with Amanda Weiss. Recently, we went apple picking at Half Crown Orchard on a beautiful Fall day. Be on the lookout for our upcoming programs. Please join us when we go to the Frick to see the “Isabelle de Borchgrave: Fashioning Art from Paper” exhibition on November 18. Additionally, we will go to Phipps Conservatory to see the Winter Flower Show and Light Garden on December 9. We will be sending out more information soon on these fun events. Do not forget about our ongoing Book Club, Charity Knitting, and Mahjongg programs. Please check the Beth EL calendar and Sisterhood web page for specific details. These are just a few of the exciting events happening this year in Sisterhood. We would love for you to join us and help us to continue to serve as a valuable arm of Beth El. INCLUSION COMMITTEE

Inclusion Shabbat will be held on February 9, 2019. It is our 10

th consecutive year

of holding such a service. In its first few years it was called “Disability Awareness Shabbat” with an emphasis on “disability”. We have adapted with times (and at times Beth El has been a local trailblazer) and Inclusion Shabbat has continued to have relevant speakers, and be inspiring. So, in this vain, I am delighted to announce that we have secured, as our guest for that morning, Joyce A. Bender, CEO, President, and Founder of Bender Consulting Services, Inc. and, also, incorporated Bender Consulting Services of Canada, Inc. in 2001. Bender Consulting is headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA and operates in 18 states in the U.S. and 2 provinces in Canada. Bender is an advocate for disability employment and the host of the Internet talk radio show Disability Matters with Joyce Bender on voiceamerica.com. She is the current Chair of the Board of the National Epilepsy Foundation and the Secretary on the Board of the American Association of People with Disabilities.

This is a morning that no one should miss; make sure to circle your calendars now.

I hope you all have noticed, too, the iCart that was unveiled over the High Holidays and you will now find in whichever sanctuary is holding Shabbat morning services. On the iCart you will find a variety of “assists” that will make sitting through our services more comfortable. Please remember that these are to be used during your time in services and returned to the iCart afterwards. Also, there are now clearer directions in our parking lot to our elevator that can be used on Shabbat morning, or any other time, to get to the Sufrin Sanctuary. Please let someone in the office know if you or another person plans to use the elevator at times when the office might not be open so we can make arrangements. And, finally, we now have more Handicapped designated parking spots. Thanks goes to Cindy Platto, Lynda Abraham Braff, and Steve Hecht for always thinking and assisting in making Beth El a more open and welcoming community for members and guests alike. B’shalom, Joan Charlson

First Mondays with Rabbi Alex

"100 Years of Jewish Life in Shanghai" presented by Bill Greenspan.

Bill Greenspan was born in the former Soviet Union and emigrated to the USA in 1979. With an Electrical Engineering Degree from Kiev Polytechnic Institute behind him, he spent over 30 years working in the nuclear industry, the first 25 years at the Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant in Arizona and the following 8 years building nuclear power plants in China. He lived and worked in Shanghai and became fascinated with its East-meets-West history and its rich Jewish community experience. Subsequently to discovering Shanghai Jewish connection, Bill read a lot of books and emboldened himself to make several presentations on the subject of Jewish Life in Shanghai at the Pittsburgh JCC and at both CMU and University of Pittsburgh, Continued Education Osher Universities. He lives in Shadyside and is the father of three sons, one residing in Israel. This presentation will cover the history of Jewish life in Shanghai and its three distinctive immigration groups: Sephardic Jews from Iraq, Ashkenazi Jews from Eastern Europe and from Austria-Germany. An emphasis will be placed on the fate of Jews escaping from Nazi Germany and Austria and their survival in the Shanghai ghetto.

Monday, January 7, 2019

We are showing a delightful movie called, "The Sturgeon Queens: The story of Russ and Daughters."

Four generations of the Russ family discuss their experiences as immigrants and their life behind the counter of the famed New York City lox and herring emporium. Interviews include two of the original Russ daughters (at the ages of 100 and 92) and enthusiastic customers such as Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, and chef Mario Batali.

All First Monday events begin with lunch at 11:30 AM in the Snyder Social Hall.

The cost is only $6.00, which includes lunch.

To RSVP, please call the shul office at 412-561-1168.

“First Mondays” is brought to you by the Beth El Membership Committee, coordinated by Sharon Moskowitz and Bernice Natelson, and is open to the community.

Please contact Steve if you wish to help underwrite future programming.

November 2018 Volunteer of the Month – Arnie Greenwald Arnie Greenwald grew up in Uniontown, as well as Gastonia, NC. He received his BA in Liberal Studies, a M.Ed. in Rehabilitation Counseling and an MBA, all from University of Pittsburgh. In his spare time, he enjoys running, riding his bike, and reading newspapers. (Many have seen him on Sunday mornings, manning the Beth El office with a

newspaper spread out, reading it cover to cover while assisting parents of the religious school.) He is most proud of raising three wonderful, red-headed children. He says that his wife, Jackie, has had the most influence on him “for obvious reasons”. A current passion is politics. A high point of his volunteer experience, he says, is getting to see members of the synagogue on an informal basis. His contributions have included serving as Assistant Treasurer and working in the Beth El office every other Sunday for many years. Arnie says that other members would be surprised to learn that he was a Juvenile Probation Officer for five years with former member, Rosie Kuzmic. Thank you, Arnie, for all that you do for Beth El!

December 2018 Volunteer of the Month – Miles Kirshner Miles Kirshner grew up in Squirrel Hill. He attended Allderdice High School, George Washington University and Pitt School of Law. Miles is very involved at Beth El and has served in numerous executive roles including as President of the congregation for two terms. Making Beth El an inclusive community for those with special needs was a key project during his presidency. The high point of his volunteer experience was seeing Beth El become the stable and sustainable congregation that it is. He is currently a member of the Ritual Committee and was a part of the Yizkor appeal. Miles is married to Cheryl and they are parents to Alex and Joel. He says that raising two incredible sons and enjoying the nachus of their becoming successful young adults is the accomplishment he is most proud of. He is also proud of building and sustaining a successful law practice. His father, Charles Kirshner, had the most influence on him. He says his dad was, and will always be, his lifetime guide providing an example by deed. Miles enjoys going to shul, golfing, playing poker and socializing with Beth El friends. Asked what people might be surprised to learn about him, he said that he has been a Grateful Dead head for the past 40 years. Finally, Miles says that he has given much to Beth El but has gotten so much more in return. Thank you, Miles, for all your contributions!

VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH

November / December 2018 Cheshvan, Kislev, Tevet 5779

I’d much rather be writing this for the Summer issue rather than thinking about another Pittsburgh Winter quickly approaching. Oh well, we can pray for a mild one! We have many people to thank for mailing support. Many organizations need to pay mailing services because they are not as fortunate as us who are able to utilize a strong volunteer base. Special thanks to those who helped collate the Sept/Oct. Kol: Rhondda Averbach, Dottie Goldstein, Norman Kerman, Debbie Lantzman and Lin Toder. Also, as if getting out a Kol issue wasn’t enough, we had to enlist the help of the following to collate the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur booklets; Karen Frank, Dottie Goldstein, Tema and Norm Kerman, Debbie Lantzman, Bernice Natelson, Don Selig, Lin Toder and Ellen Whitman. Yasher K to all and to Betsy Rascoe for managing our advertisers who help to offset the costs of the Kol.

Speaking of Holidays, wow what a month. The people behind the scenes are the ones that make it appear that it’s a well-oiled machine, that’s because it is. Months of planning in preparation from Alvin Catz and Sam Balk organizing honors with the help of Andy Reibach in its coordination efforts. The Rabbis, Alex and Amy, preparing their sermons and service logistics along with Rabbi Amy’s musical services in the newly renovated Sufrin Chapel and our outdoor amphitheater. Parts need to be assigned, preparation by our two professional shofar blowers extraordinaire; Michael Silverman and Billy Spatz, silver polishing and ordering the break the fast treats by Fran Berkman, coordinating a Kol Nidre dinner for 150 by our Catering Manager, Claire Plassmeyer, Addresses to the congregation by our president, Warren Sufrin and our Exec. Vice President, Susie Seletz coordination of bima logistics for all the honors, Edie Yorke orchestrating the decorum for those receiving honors, all of our Men’s Club ushers led by Jay Feuer, appeals by Sylvia Slavkin for Life and Legacy and Miles Kirshner for the Yahrzeit appeal, the Israel bonds appeal by Karen Morris, Tricia Burkett and Joan Charlson, supplying the Cantor and his family host meals by Sheila and Alvin Catz, Warren and Adele Sufrin, and Sheryl and Michael Silverman, transportation for the Cantor provided by Paul Shapiro, Board of Trustees as greeters in the main lobby and the Exec. Committee and Youth representative Rose Genstein sitting on the bima. All of our Torah readers, service leaders, babysitting coordinators and those others behind the scenes; Deb Goldberg, Leslie Gura, Shirley Moritz, Edie Price, Bill Stevens, Bill Rigby and Dorian Scales. A Hearty Yasher Koach! During the holidays each year, there is a special presentation. The first is presented to an individual/s and is known as the Alex Silverman Shem Tov (Good Name) Award in memory of Alex Silverman. Roz Silverman each year searches for a framed piece of art that the awardee/s receive and always manages to find just the right piece for the occasion. This year, the recipient was Lynda Abraham-Braff. The second award that is given is the Hoffman Family Distinguished Service Award in memory of Sid and Maxine Hoffman. This year’s recipient was Alan Scheimer and represents a lifetime achievement. Yasher K to both honorees!

Wishing You and Your Family a very Happy, Healthy, and Safe

Thanksgiving Weekend!
