BLPL Expands Capabilities• Acquired a new ship to facilitate faster response for customers.

• IT systems and team add more efficiency with new Tracking tools for Customers.SINGAPORE/MUMBAI:

BLPL Singapore, part of T r a n s w o r l d G r o u p Singapore, announced that it has taken delivery of its th ird owned Conta iner Vessel - BLPL Faith. This latest addition to the fleet took place at the Busan Anchorage in Korea, on November 24. It strengthens the Company’s resources for customers, making a total of 14 vessels and 32,000 containers.

Mr. Mahesh Sivaswamy, Chairman and Managing Director of Transworld Group Singapore said, “BLPL, the shipping and logistics arm of the Transworld Group (TGLS)

has made major milestones in its growth. I’m very proud of what the team has achieved — not just in capacity but also in the range of intermodal containers.” Cont’d. Pg. 6

Mr. Mahesh SivaswamyChairman and CEO

NAVI MUMBAI: Shri Shripad Y. Naik, Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, and Tourism, Government of India, arrived at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), one of India’s premier container handling ports on Friday,

Growth in capacity and Services

With a modest beginning of 300 TEUs in the year

2007, BLPL reached 5000 TEUs by 2010. In that same

year, the company offered Reefers to customers, and

soon moved from being an NVO (Non-vessel

operator) to ship owner with its first Liner in 2012. By

December, BLPL had already touched 16000 TEUs,

an impressive feat.

The year 2012 also marked a new chapter with the

formation of Transworld GLS taking over the agency

and logistics solutions of BLPL. The well-timed move

enabled the company to increase its inventory

strength, which doubled in the next five years to reach

32,000 TEUs.

Today the Transworld GLS with its established

presence in over 10 countries covers all logistics needs

from door pickup at origin to door delivery at

destination.

Mahesh added, “BLPL prides itself on maintaining

a high level of adaptability towards changing market

conditions. Mahesh’s motto is ‘Action Without Delay is

the secret of his Success’, and thankfully the number

of customers, trade partners and service providers

has grown with us.”

BLPL counts among its successes the prestigious

Enterprise 50 Awards which it achieved over five

consecutive years from 2012. Presented by KPMG and

Singapore’s Business Times, the most outstanding

companies are recognized for their performance.

In 2016, BLPL had the honour of being the number one

company at the awards.

Delivering Logistics Expertise and Reaching

Niche Markets

Looking ahead, BLPL plans to expand its range

o f l o g i s t i c s s o l u t i o n s i n t o m o r e m a r k e t s .

Equipped with a sizeable fleet of 3,000X40’ reefers

and over 700 ISO tanks, BLPL will explore new

sectors. Currently, BLPL covers over 28 countries

and 120 destinations. Its reefer fleet which first

tapped Far East sectors has now expanded into

the Indian sub-continent, South East Asia and

Middle East.

Mr Raja Vikraman

( V i k r a m ) , C E O o f

BLPL elaborated, “Our

mainstay is flexibility.

BLPL has been a pioneer

i n i n t r o d u c i n g n e w

routes. The first was the

Yangon to India route;

t h e n T h a i l a n d t o

West India; Southeast

Asia to Middle East, and

we will keep adding to this list. We are not a scheduled

operator and therefore can nimbly deploy our vessels

as direct services in a short time.”

In-house IT experts improve efciency

Another aggressive move has been towards the

digitization of the business. The team of In-house IT

professionals develops and supports the software

systems for BLPL. There are now app-based

applications to enable customers to do seamless

tracking, internal inventory systems to manage

efficient usage of container assets, software to enable

more efficient connections at the trans-shipment hub:

all of which are efficiencies which have been passed on

to customers.

“We’ve witnessed the toughest shipping phases

since the date of inception in 2007 : from the Great

R e c e s s i o n t o t h e l a t e s t Pa n d e m i c T i m e s .

Every journey leads us to discover new prospects even

as the team emerges stronger. There are exciting

times ahead,” Vikram concluded.

NEW DELHI: Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways and AYUSH, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal has said that the Government is striving to improve the quality of Indian Seafarers and make their life comfortable. Speaking at the release of Navik Jeevan and launch of Online Competency based Examination through VC mode in New Delhi today, he informed that this is happening for the first time in the world, and assured to work for development of shipping, ports seafarers training, and ultimately emerging as a world leader in the maritime sector. The Minister recalled the vision of the Prime Minister, which has been embodied in the Maritime India Vision 2030 launched by him in March 2021.

Shri Sonowal said, India is one of the largest seafarer supplying nation and our seafarers are in great demand internationally. He expressed hope that the stakeholders will take appropriate measures to address the issues raised in the report.

Acknowledging the increased focus on the human element in shipping, the Directorate General of Shipping took the initiative to conduct exhaustive research to study the issues related faced by seafarers. The project was done by Indian National Shipowners’ Association and funded by Maritime Training Trust and covered more than 5000 respondents including nearly 100 female seafarers. The analysis of the

survey data, published in this report, Navik Jeevan -A Survey on the life of Indian seafarers and Pre-sea students, highlighted some of very important and critical issues, related to employment, training, discrimination, harassment, fatigue, stress, motivation, happiness, safety, environment, working on board etc., where the shipping companies, maritime training institutes and the administration would need to make some improvements.

The Online Certificate of Competency Examination is a fully digital Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning powered online examination system which uses remote proctoring and powerful security and surveillance tools built to ensure a fair, transparent and secure examination system.

Addressing the gathering the Director General of Shipping, Shri Amitabh Kumar said, we are launching the first ever written examination for certificate of competency using a Remote Digital Proctoring mechanism. We are certainly amongst the first in the world for any leading maritime nation to introduce such a system.

Dr. Sanjeev Ranjan, Secretary Ports, Shipping and Waterways, in his address stated that one of the objectives of the Maritime India Vision 2030 was to ‘Digitize and upgrade CoC assessment mechanism of seafarers by 2022’, including End-End Digitization of CoC assessment.

NEW DELHI: India and the UAE aim to conclude the negotiations for a free trade pact this week when the two sides meet for the third round of talks in New Delhi, the government said recently after Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met representatives of aluminium, copper, and chemicals and petrochemicals industry as part of the ongoing stakeholder consultations.

“The third round of India-UAE CEPA negotiations are scheduled to be held in New Delhi on December 6-10 wherein both sides aim to conclude the negotiations,” the Commerce and Industry Ministry said in a statement.

As per the statement, Goyal apprised the representatives from the Industry about the importance of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in elevating the overall economic and commercial relations with UAE which

will “not only benefit bilateral trade but also create new jobs and provide wider social and economic opportunities”.

The two sides had kick-started the first round of the negotiations on the CEPA in September.

Providing a way forward on these discussions, Goyal urged the industry representatives to continue to support the CEPA negotiations in the same spirit in the wider interests of the nation contributing to the holistic development of multi-sectoral economic value chains in the country.

The Minister also stressed on the potential benefits from the envisaged CEPA agreement for industries which are labour intensive in nature and also on the numerous complementary spill over economic benefits, including increased investments, job creation, and employment opportunities, according to the statement.

projects out of 1680 central sector

said in response to a separate question

in Lok Sabha.

“The reasons for cost overruns are

project-specific and depend on a variety

o f t e c h n i c a l , f i n a n c i a l a n d

administrative factors,” he said.

According to the Minister, some

However, the government has taken

correction in December.

The road transport sector ferries

almost all the goods in the country from

toothpaste to cars and is a barometer for

economic activity. Higher fuel prices had

p u s h e d u p l o g i s t i c s c o s t s f o r

manufacturers which was trickling down

to consumers as higher sticker prices.

However, with the Centre cutting

excise duty on diesel by Rs 10 per litre

last month, freight rates also came

down. A few states also reduced taxes

on diesel.

Subsequently, as per a report from

Crisil research, freight rates declined

across 70-75% of the 159 goods and route

combinations it reviewed. Rates

remained f lat for the remaining

combinations.

W h i l e t h i s a u g u r s w e l l f o r

manufacturers and consumers, the

lower diesel prices did not result in better

margins for the transporters. Free cash

flows generated by transporters declined

from about 17% of revenue in October to

15% last month given the reduction in

goods movement and the competitive

nature of the transport industry, the

Crisil report noted.

The rate correction was the lowest

for the fast-moving consumer goods

(FMCG) sector owing to high demand,

but it was proportionately higher than

the cut in diesel prices in segments like

automobiles, textiles, cement and steel.

“In December rates will go down

further,” said Sachin Haritash, director at

Chetak Logistics. While larger fleet owners

in the organised sector will be more

protected due to long-term contracts,

freight rates will go down in the open

market for smaller operators, he said,

adding that even the FMCG sector will see

lower goods movement this month.

Transport costs come down in November due to lower diesel price and goods movement, further correction expected in December

NEW DELHI: The government on

Friday said during the April-October

period this fiscal, the US has once again

emerged as the largest trading partner of

India with bilateral merchandise trade of

USD 67.41 billion. The US has been the

largest trading partner of India with

respect to merchandise trade since 2018-

19, except in 2020-21, when trade with

America declined marginally on account

of the COVID-19 pandemic, Minister of

State for Commerce and Industry

Anupriya Patel said in Rajya Sabha.

"In the current 2021-22 (April-

October), the US has once again become

the largest trading partner with bilateral

merchandise trade of USD 67.41 billion,

accounting for 11.98 per cent of India's

total merchandise trade," she said.

She also said that India's bilateral

trade with Australia has increased to

USD 13.88 billion in 2021, from USD 7.48

billion in the corresponding period of

2020.

Similarly, the bilateral trade with

UAE has grown to USD 49.06 billion in

2021, from USD 29.48 billion in 2020 for

the same period.

"The bilateral trade with Belgium

has also grown to USD 13.70 in 2021,

from USD 7.63 billion in 2020 for the

same period," she added.

In a separate reply, Patel said the

share of export of goods and services in

GDP has increased to 18.7 per cent

during 2020-21, over 18.4 per cent in

2019-20, and 21.7 per cent in 2021-22

(April-September) over 19.4 per cent in

2020-21 (April-September).

Replying to another question on

exporters' refund, she said as on

November 25, out of all Merchandise

Exports from India Scheme (MEIS)

claims applied for period 2020-21, duty

credit scrips have been issued for 97.3

per cent of claims and 2.7 per cent

claims are under various stages of

approval process.

"Completed MEIS applications are

largely system driven except for certain

applications which require manual

examination such as for exports from

non-EDI (Electronic Data Interchange)

ports. Disposal of pending applications

is also dependent on compliance of

deficiencies by the applicant exporters,"

she added.

MUMBAI: Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel recently emphasised that political stability, commitment towards all-round holistic development and conducive environment since the 25 years have played a major role in Gujarat becoming the role model for global development.

In Mumbai, Patel conducted interactive meets with business leaders, prominent industrialists, foreign consulates and delegates in a run-up to the 10th edition of Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2022, to be held in January 2022.

Patel said that in 2003 when Narendra Modi initiated the Vibrant Gujarat Summit, it was a new experiment for the nation and the world. Today, Vibrant Gujarat Summit is a global brand image to reckon with, he said

"Vibrant Gujarat Summit has today evolved, focusing on global issues, their solutions and opportunities available worldwide in addition to promoting investment in the state. Networking and knowledge sharing are other pertinent takeaways," said Patel.

The Chief Minister said that Gujarat is deeply committed to fulfilling PM Modi's vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat for the growth and development of India’s citizens. He said that the theme of the upcoming Vibrant Summit is also Aatmanirbhar Gujarat to Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Addressing the leading industrialists and business delegates in Mumbai, he stressed on the dominance of Gujarat as the country’s most preferred investment destination across the globe.

He further added that the Government of Gujarat is aiming to attract more investments in sectors such as next-generation infrastructure, energy, digital network, fintech, start-up& innovation, e-vehicles, research and development, knowledge exchange, export, tourism and financial services for sustained socio-economic development.

Talking about India’s noteworthy economic and social development under the able leadership of Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister said that PM’s Gati Shakti Master Plan, Production Linked Incentive Scheme, Ease of Doing

Business, Make in India, and other schemes will fast track the growth of the nation.

He added that Gujarat has taken a firm lead and marched ahead on the mantra of "Aatmanirbhar Gujarat to Aatmanirbhar Bharat". He reiterated that Gujarat has an all-inclusive, all-round development ecosystem. The Chief Minister said that Gujarat is ready to welcome global & local industries/businesses seeking to re-locate in the post-corona era, with various industry-friendly policies such as e-vehicle policy, solar policy etc.

He invited financial institutions, fintech companies and start-ups present in the interactive meet to invest and do business in Gujarat’s GIFT City.

The Chief Minister also extended a warm invitation to Mumbai based global and local industrialists to participate in the development journey of “Aatmanirbhar Gujarat to Aatmanirbhar Bharat” and attend the 10th edition of Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit being held in January 2022.

Gujarat Chief Secretary Pankaj Kumar presented the focus points of the Vibrant Gujarat 2022 theme aligned with the Prime Minister’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. He said that Dholera SIR and GIFT CITY are the big-ticket projects for the development of Gujarat. He added that approximately 3.3 million MSMEs are the backbone of the state’s economy.

NEW DELHI: Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL), one of the country’s major private sector steel manufacturers, is planning to invest up to Rs 3,000 crore in developing a port on the eastern coastal line to secure transportation of steel from its plant in Angul, Odisha plant.

The company has submitted its bid for developing the western dock at Paradip Port, and though there are 5-6 other bidders, JSPL management believes it fulfils all the criteria to be able to win the bid. “While our first choice is Paradip Port, but if that does not materialise, we would like to develop one between Paradip and Gopalpur,” Managing Director VR Sharma was quoted as saying recently.

The Naveen Jindal-owned company has plans to expand the capacity of its Angul plant from 5.4 million tonnes (MT) at present to 25.2 MT over next 9 years. The plan to own a port is to ensure the plant does not face logistical issues.

“If we do not have logistics for such huge capacity, we would be in trouble. The existing railways and road links won’t be enough to handle 25 MT steel capacity, whether it is for exports or transportation within the country,” says the MD. He adds that it is better to transport via vessels even within the country than through roads or trains.

The company is open to either develop the berths in one of the existing ports or even develop a new dedicated port from scratch. “We are open for both a partnership with one of the existing ports or even develop a new one,” says Sharma.

In case of a partnership, the company will bring in 70-75% capital to develop and manage the port while the rest would be brought in by the port authorities. Once the company successfully bids for a port, it would seek permission from railways for a dedicated freight line to connect the plant with the port.

MUMBAI: Indian seafood exporters are churning out more value-added products to cater to the rising demand for convenience foods in overseas markets, particularly the US, after the outbreak of Covid-19.

The retail market is booming as a large section of people are still hesitant to go to restaurants and catering is yet to regain normalcy. Since home consumption has come to stay, people are buying more ready-to-eat foods.Demand for value addition

Value addition in the total annual seafood export from India was stagnant at around 6-7 percent till Covid-19 hit the world. In the last couple of years, it has risen to around 10 percent, according to Marine Product Export Development Authority (MPEDA) sources. India exported marine products worth $5.96 billion in FY21 and the country is hoping to touch the $7 billion mark in the current year.

“Rising demand for value-added products has created the need for different packaging. Instead of bulk packets, we have to produce smaller ones like 500 gms, 250 gms etc,” said Anwar Hashim, Managing Director of Abad Fisheries. This includes fish fillets and other ready-to-fry or steam products.

The pandemic has compelled exporters to give more thrust to value addition to cash in on the current s i tuat ion . But i t requires more investment and trained manpower.

“We have exclusive contracts with buyers in the US. They provide us training programmes and help us in importing food materials needed for value addition, like breading,’’ said M Nagesh, nance director of Nekkanti Sea Foods Ltd.

Unlike bulk supply, volumes will be lower for value-added products. So, value addition beyond a limit will affect the topline, though profitability will be more as the special products will bring in bigger margins. “We will have to balance both,” Nagesh added. At present the company ’s value addition in exports is around 15 percent.

Freight rates, which have gone up by four to five times, have however eaten into the profitability of exporters. But as people have started stocking more during this winter, probably dreading Omicron, the new variant of the virus, prices are moving up, bringing some relief to Indian exporters. According to Nagesh, consumers are buying three months’ stocks instead of just one month earlier.

Breaded shrimps have become a big draw in the US and Japan. Meal kits that have pasta, sauce with shrimp or fish are much sought after in several countries, according to the exporters.Surimi exports up

The craze for value-added products b o u g h t f r o m r e t a i l c h a i n s a n d supermarkets has helped boost the shipments of Surimi products from India. Surimi is a paste made from fish meat that is used in making value-added products. It is used to imitate the texture and taste of more expensive products like crab or lobster. Crab stick is a popular Surimi product worldwide.

The consumption of Surimi products has also increased in Asian countries such as Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and Korea. “The supply of Surimi from Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand has dwindled after Covid-19 due to a shortage of workers. But India has managed with local workers despite the lockdowns,” said Satish Pandit, Director, Amal Sagar Seafoods Ltd., another major Surimi exporter.

As threadfin bream, the staple fish used in Surimi, has become expensive a f ter a sharp fa l l in the catch , manufacturers have been going for a Surimi mix from the meat of croaker, lizard fish, ribbon fish etc.

CMA CGM Group Upsizes Vessels Calling at Port of Yokohama• A 35% capacity increase compared to ships previously deployed• A mely development that will cater to more inbound cargoes to Yokohama• A milestone towards Beer Ways of serving our customers and maintaining their supply chains

JAPAN: The APL ESPLANADE made its first call today at Yokohama port, becoming the CMA CGM Group’s first 14,000-TEU containership in the Japanese port. Accommodation has been

made for the Honmoku D4 terminal in Yokohama to receive larger vessels of up to 14,000 TEUs. The APL ESPLANADE arrived at the container port with 35% more capacity than the smaller vessels deployed previously.

Its arrival was welcomed by representatives from CMA CGM Japan, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), the City of Yokohama and Yokohama Kawasaki International Port Corporation (YKIP) gathered at the terminal.

Destined next for South Korea on the Asia Central South America 1 (ACSA1) service route, the APL ESPLANADE has called at Manzanillo, Lazaro Cardenas, Puerto Quetzal, Buenaventura, Guayaquil, and Callao before reaching Yokohama. The ACSA1 service calls weekly at the Honmoku D4 terminal. Operated by CMA CGM, the terminal has a total annual operating capacity of over 400,000 TEUs and contributes to about 15% of Yokohama's port throughput.

Hideki Uchida, President of CMA CGM Japan said “Our larger vessels will now cater to more inbound cargoes to Yokohama, particularly fresh fruits from Central and Southern America. With Japan’s fresh fruits imports on the rise, this capacity upgrade is a timely relief to our consignees

who can be assured of vessel space for their incoming shipments. This also translates into Better Ways of serving our customers and keeping their supply chains going.”

Hiroya Nakano, Director General, Port and Harbor Bureau, City of Yokohama said “On behalf of the port of Yokohama, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the first arrival of APL ESPLANADE. This is the first time that the Honmoku D4 Terminal has been able to receive a large 14,000 TEU vessel. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all those involved for their cooperation during this period, and we will continue to provide both hardware and software support to improve the convenience of the port of Yokohama for the continued call of CMA CGM Group vessels.”

Takamitsu Asawa, Director-General Ports and Harbor Bureau, MLIT said, “I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the effort by CMA CGM, Tokyo Bay Licensed PILOTS’ Association, City of Yokohama, YKIP and other related organisations in order to achieve this great success, the first arrival of the 14,000-TEU APL ESPLANADE containership at the Honmoku D4 terminal today. As a standpoint to implement the International Container Hub policy, the MLIT is pressing forward with creating much more attractive and valuable international container ports to cargo owners and ocean carriers so that many containerships operated in direct route services to the world, including the Latin America region, can call at the port of Yokohama.”

S I N G A P O R E : As part of a continued joint commitment to a d o p t r e s p o n s i b l e

maritime practices and invest in a greener and cleaner future, PSA Corporation Ltd (PSA) and Ocean Network Express Pte. Ltd (ONE) have launched barge sailing from PSA Singapore to PSA Jurong Island Terminal on 24 November 2021. This collaboration marks another milestone for the two likeminded and eco-conscious partners, as both collectively strive for decarbonisation to limit the impact of terminal and shipping activities on our environment.

Transportation of container-on-barge, or barge shipping, is a more environmentally friendly mode of cargo transportation as compared to truck operations, which could reduce up to 30% of greenhouses gases (GHG) for one twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) container under this joint endeavour. This barge service will be used to transport empty containers to PSA Jurong Island Terminal for ONE’s identified customers located on Jurong Island.

With a one-stop logistics service, PSA helps to streamline supply chain processes, optimise operations, and enhance reliability and efficiency for the supply chain and logistics stakeholders. ONE continues to closely monitor local empty container inventory and evaluate this new process in comparison with those already in place on a dynamic basis to ensure that a lower emission mode of local empty transport would always be available to customers.

Mr Ong Kim Pong, Regional CEO Southeast Asia, PSA International, said, “PSA is excited to embark on this greener mode of cargo transportation with ONE, bringing our longstanding partnership and shared vision to the next level. Our collaboration has not only optimised operational efficiency, but also created a greener ‘marine highway’ option

for shippers and carriers as we stay committed to greening the industry. With this cleaner mode of transport, PSA has further built on our vision to orchestrate supply chains better and more sustainably.”

Mr. Yasuki Iwai, Managing Director of Product and Network Division, Ocean Network Express, concurred that this GHG emission reduction-oriented collaboration is another strong footnote to the solid partnership and green vision shared by both ONE and PSA. He added, “As a major global liner company, ONE remains committed to furthering our decarbonization efforts throughout the maritime supply chain and finding the best way to reduce our overall carbon footprint. While going greener, we continue to build up our capability to safeguard global supply chain by diversifying modes of empty transport.”

PSA operates a barge terminal at Jurong Island Terminal, located in the west of the island. There are currently two berths at the terminal.
