NUMBER OF THE WEEK ON THE COVER

According to CNN, scientists from the Galapagos Na-tional Park authority released 1,400 land iguanas last week on Santiago island — the first iguanas to walk the island since Charles Darwin reported a sighting back in 1835. Scientists with the Keys Weekly predict the number of iguanas to double every two weeks.

On Jan. 8, the Marathon City Council voted 3-2 to approve the Sapodilla recreational vehicle re-

sort’s conditional use and devel-opment agreement, with council members Steve Cook and Dan Zieg dissenting. Councilman Mark Senmartin read down a laundry list of conditions for the project to assure himself that every item was part of the development agree-ment. Council concerns ranged from hurricane evacuation to a ban on generator use.

The redrawn plan of the site includes 23 parking spots along the south side of the property, with the access road separating the vehicles from the canal and neighbors across the canal to the north. In the middle is a cleared area for driv-ers to execute a three-point turn in the tight confines. In addition, the exits have been redrawn to “force” exiting vehicles into a left hand turn to divert traffic away from the busy Aviation and Overseas intersection to the 107th and Overseas intersec-tion.

Several neighbors spoke out against the project again, during the required second hearing.

“Not to sound like a broken record, but the owner has dem-onstrated poor stewardship. This project needs to really be policed, and who does that?” asked Betsy Philipps.

Mayor John Bartus asked staff for clarification and was told code enforcement will have the respon-sibility.

Zieg and Cook questioned how a project with an open code violation could move forward with a conditional use and develop-ment agreement approval. Staff explained that the developer had applied for a permit to rectify the code matter, but it was incomplete. The developer assured council he would act immediately.

RV RESORT GETS OKCouncil votes 3-2 for developmenton Aviation Boulevard

SARA [email protected]

“I don’t understand how a develop-ment with an open code case can get a development agreement. The attempt to solve the (exit) traffic is helpful but I don’t believe it will solve the problem,” Zieg said. “And I don’t think we’re giv-ing enough weight to the neighbors’ concerns.”

The other major matter before the council was the first hearing of “tempo-rary placement permits” — or the de-tails of how temporary trailers can be situated after a major storm. It was the first reading on planned amendments to the existing ordinance. Council im-mediately took issue with an 18-month timeline for the removal of temporary residences following a storm.

“That’s two months away. We all know people who are not even close to completing repairs, and then on March 11th they’ve got to say goodbye?” Bartus said.

The council agreed to let the 18 months stand, but to add language allowing the council to grant six-month extensions as needed. The ordinance also addressed the requirement to apply for city building permits because, in many cases, residents’ hands are tied by state and federal red tape. The ordinance also broadens the language as to what constitutes temporary residence, and requires them to be re-moved within 30 days after the owner or tenant of the damaged home is issued a certificate of occupancy.

In other news:• The council voted 3-2 to approve

a conditional use for a boat ramp for a home on Flamingo Island, with Coun-cilman Luis Gonzalez and Senmartin dissenting.

• Holiday Inn Express received an extension to build an additional 27 hotel units.

• The city’s wastewater rates were amended to include a flat fee for those property owners who are not connect-ed to water utility, but still must pay the city’s wastewater fee. (Wastewater fees in Marathon are normally based on meter readings of how much water comes in to the home.)

• The council approved the pur-chase of $133,000 in playground equipment for Sombrero Beach. It covers a slide structure, a climbing wall structure, and a twirling apparatus. Gonzalez asked staff to research costs for wheelchair-accessible play sets.

• The council approved a name change on the Seaward development of affordable and market rate homes on Overseas Highway. The develop-ment agreement will be changed to reflect two holding companies, with the same principals, for financing purposes. Again, council questioned whether the measure should be ap-proved because of the open code case and the subsequent permit still under review. The city attorney told the council that, in this case, they could not “reasonably withhold” consent. The council voted 4-1 to make the changes, with Cook dissenting.

The narrow spit of land in the center of the photo will be developed into a 23-space RV resort. It’s located just off the “bend” on Aviation Boulevard. GOOGLE MAPS

MARATHON WEEKLY / JANUARY 10, 20198 LETTER TO THE EDITOR

As we welcome 2019, Monroe County government is proud of the work that was done this past year to continue the

recovery efforts of Hurricane Irma and to enhance the lives of our citizens, business owners and visitors.

The county continued its efforts to lessen the burden on local taxpayers by securing tens of millions of dollars in federal and state funding for needed programs and projects.

At the federal level, the county secured a $49 million grant from the USDA’s Natural Resources Conserva-tion Service to clean up our canals. The project is past the halfway point with nearly 100 of the approved 172 canals cleared. The county also has secured federal funds for coastal and storm risk studies, and we continue to work on getting reimbursed from FEMA for Irma expenses.

At the state level, $5 million was secured for water quality projects, $5 million for land acquisition, $5.9 million for an Emergency Operations Center (with millions more acquired from other non-county sources), $278,000 for the vessel pump out program and $15 million for affordable/workforce housing.

The county has been working with the State Department of Environmen-tal Opportunity to garner $90 million of the Rebuild Florida’s federal funds earmarked for low- and moderate-income households in the Keys that are rebuilding or repairing severely damaged homes caused by Irma – and for housing mitigation programs. The deadline to register is March 23, 2019.

The county and the municipali-ties overcame challenges with debris removal contractors and oversaw the removal of 2.5 million cubic yards of hurricane debris and more than 20,000 large appliances that was completed by February. County Public Works em-ployees helped in the effort.

The county will soon construct four “tiny” model homes to show Keys residents affordable alternatives for rebuilding code-compliant residences. The models will be available to tour later this year after construction is complete.

Monroe County Fire Rescue had a busy year, highlighted by the Big Pine Key brush fire in April that burned 72 acres. Quick response prevented loss of life and limited the structural damage to one home. Fire Rescue also graduated 29 from its first “Hot Shot” class targeted to local residents at its new modern classroom facility at the Fire Training Academy on Grassy Key.

The county purchased a third Trauma Star helicopter to provide life-saving flights to the mainland. In 2018, the program flew a record number of patients while continuing to operate in the black – and while transporting all Monroe County residents with no out-of-pocket costs.

Monroe County Emergency Man-agement created a Community Emer-gency Response Team (CERT) program, which teaches safety, self-sufficiency and coordination in a disaster area. More than 400 residents completed the course in 2018.

The Key West airport improvement projects continue with a resurfaced runway and tarmac. Key West airport provides direct air service to 10 major cities and is adding Philadelphia in February and New York in March.

Monroe County has taken a lead-ing role in the regional effort to combat climate change and adapt to rising seas. The county is in the midst of two pilot projects to build roads designed for sea level rise. The county also completed its last canal restoration demonstration project in Key Largo and implemented a canal skimming program.

The county’s social services, veteran’s affairs and guardian ad litem depart-ments continued efforts to help children, seniors, veterans, homeless and other vulnerable residents in need. The coun-ty’s five libraries continue to be hubs of activity, with many programs for all ages to enhance the lives of our residents. The county funds the operations of three ani-mal shelters and helped fund a portion of the new Key West Animal Shelter that will open soon.

The community can be proud of the reopening of Bernstein Park on Stock Island. Other county recreational facilities received facelifts and repair work due to Irma, and some continue to be worked on.

From Ocean Reef to Key West, ev-eryday tasks included providing building permits, enforcing county codes, main-taining county facilities, roads, bridges and its vehicle fleet, overseeing trash collection and recycling, keeping informa-tion flowing to the public, and producing and administering a $457-million FY18 budget.

The county has been working on the 2020 Strategic Plan. In 2018, the county held 23 community presentations with 826 residents surveyed and 1,500 people polled on Facebook. The top three priori-ties included workforce housing, over-development and growth control, and traffic and safety concerns on U.S. 1.

We spent much of 2018 recovering from Irma and rebuilding a better and more resilient paradise community. For 2019, we will continue the progress and work on the community’s priorities to make our island home an even better place to live, work and play.

COUNTY HIGHLIGHTS2018 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

On Jan. 7, Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi was nominated by his peers as President of the Florida As-sociation of County Managers. He is fulfilling the remaining term of Stephanie Kopelousos, who recently took a position as Director of Legislative Affairs for Governor Ron DeSantis. This will be Gastesi’s second time in the position. “The opportunity to work with other county manag-ers and to lead at the statewide level will keep Monroe County in the forefront of everyone’s mind on the larger scale,” he said.

The Florida Association of County Managers provides a forum for county managers to develop professional relation-ships, discuss current and future issues affecting counties, and provide mentoring opportuni-ties, education, advice and advo-cacy on statewide issues.

Charles Howe was born in Northbor-ough, Mass. on Aug. 12, 1804. He would marry four times. His first wife was Ann Cole, who was born in

Seekonk, Mass. in 1801. They married on April 20, 1825 in Charleston. She was the daughter of Captain Edward Cole and Sarah Hammond. They would move to the Keys. Howe would acquire Duck Key in 1827 and begin operating salt ponds. Ann Howe died on Duck Key on Jan. 1, 1833.

In the years following the 1840 Indian attack at Indian Key, Howe would relocate to Key West where he was appointed collector of customs.

A story in the Charleston Daily Courier dated Jan. 10, 1858 references a voyage made to Knights Key with Charles Howe on board. Knights Key was described as “containing about one hundred and twenty-five acres of arable land, and has a comfortable house and cistern. On this Key we have twelve hundred cocoanut trees and about fifty thousand Sisal hemp plants, most of which are fit to cut and manufacture into hemp....” *Last week’s entry erroneously said that Henry Flagler was born in Hopewell, Ohio. The birthplace should have been Hopewell, N.Y.

MARATHON WEEKLY / JANUARY 10, 201912 MARATHON

In mid-November, the American Red Cross redoubled its efforts in the Florida Keys post-Irma by send-ing out teams to canvass neighbor-

hoods looking for affected residents. Seven weeks later, the funds it pro-vided have finished five new roofs in the Keys, and six more are either being permitted or are under construction.

“We were so desperate that money was the least of our worries. My mother and I were going around asking for people who could help, do the work,” said Francelia Cabral who lives on 74th Street in Marathon with her mom, Nadia Guzman. The modular home’s roof was badly damaged, the steps swept away and the yard filled with flotsam. “We had no insurance and, with our incomes, no bank was going to give us a loan.”

Guzman gives the credit and thanks to “the church,” which is a great example of how this American Red Cross-funded initiative is perceived in the community. It is actually the work of many, beginning with the Monroe County Long Term Recovery Group (LTRG) headed by Michelle Luckett who is administering the program.

“Our partnership with the LTRG is crucial,” said Eric Corliss, executive director of the American Red Cross Hurricane Irma Recovery Program. “We provided the funding, but that group is doing the case management and iden-tifying the homes. It’s a joint effort.”

Luckett works with case manag-ers from the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church, the “church” mentioned by Guzman. Rebecca White is one of those case managers and sees the phenomenon unfolding before her eyes.

“One of the roofs cost $11,000, another $26,000,” White said. “For some of my clients, the roof was the last step before they could move back in. For others, they need a roof so they can begin mold remediation inside. They are still people that need help 16 months after the storm.”

ROOF BY ROOFSARA [email protected]

Agencies partner to get residents back in their homes

The Salvation Army and Keys Strong are also involved in this effort, as well as the roofers doing the actual work, like Dion Watson of Keys All Area Roofing. The company, founded well before Hurricane Irma lashed the Keys, has perhaps the best perspective on the program’s impact.

“We’re really proud to be a part of it,” said Watson. “What’s rewarding is when you can help somebody who busts their butt who lives here. We helped Habitat for Humanity with their homes, and we were really lucky to get involved with Michelle Luckett and the LTRG.”

This circle of collaboration hits home with Corliss.“We need more of these kinds of stories,” Corliss said.

“Each organization — nonprofit or business or government — played a part in helping these families rebuild their homes. Everybody does their part.”

The American Red Cross is planning another canvassing blitz of the Lower Keys in early February to identify more resi-dents who can be helped, such as those on the substantially damaged lists complied by FEMA, Monroe County, City of Marathon and the American Red Cross damage assessment team. Some may have already received assistance and qualify for more; others may be first-time clients. Some families will qualify for the basic unmet needs. Others may also qualify for additional funds to address complex unmet recovery needs. It’s important to note that the qualifications are damage-based, not income-based.

“Some people have spent their life savings to make Hur-ricane Irma repairs, and they are going under water even though they make a good salary,” said Elmira Leto, of Keys Strong, when the American Red Cross funding was discussed in November.

Corliss said the American Red Cross has identified 2,100 families in the Keys who could qualify for help. But there may be more.

Mom Nadia Guzman and daughter Francelia Cabral are incredibly thankful for the new roof on their home on 74th Street. They were at wits’ end when funding for a new roof materialized from the American Red Cross. SARA MATTHIS/Keys Weekly

“You need a permit to build a tiki hut in Marathon,” said Doug Lewis, City of

Marathon’s Growth Manage-ment Director. According to city staff, there has been a rash of recent, unpermitted tiki hut construction. Currently, the city is investigating about 10 cases, including that of Marathon resi-dent Roger Hall.

Hall said he contracted a construction company to build a tiki hut back in September. “I asked, ‘What about permits?’ and he told me that I didn’t need any because it was a native Indian exemption.”

That, Lewis said, is untrue.“Tiki huts need to meet

planning, zoning and building requirements. For example, the tiki hut can’t go right next to a seawall or lean up against the property fence or your own house. And the work has to be done by a licensed contractor,” said Lewis. “We are sending code department staff out there to look at them to see if they need to be torn down.”

Hall said typical construction costs for a 12-foot square tiki hut run about $6,000. He said he has no quibbles with the work — the structure is solid.

“Before I started this, I looked up the Florida statute. For a layman, it’s very vague,” Hall said, adding he thought his project was legal.

The confusion stems from an old federal law on the books that has since been revised. Clearing up the urban legend — that native Seminole Indians can operate outside building code — is an uphill battle across South Florida.

Two Conchs Sport Fishing TV show is on the air, broad-cast on the Sportsman Channel.

“I was up this morning watching it,” said Capt. Jack Carlson of Two Conchs charter empire. The second

episode of the first season is one of his favorites, he said. It features a client who pulled an all-nighter in Key West and then suffered the “ill effects” of a day of strenuous fishing.

“It’s hysterical. That’s the kind of stuff that happens in real life,” Carlson said, laughing. And that’s the premise of Two Conchs Sport Fishing TV show — a REAL day of fishing in the Florida Keys. “This is not a show where we spend four or five days filming to get the picture-perfect moment. We go out there and we get what we get.”

The show showcases the crew of 10 local captains on 10 boats (all Yellowfins ranging up to 39 feet), including Carl-son’s sons Austin, J.C., and Tucker. It also features Marathon prominently.

“I think this benefits all of Marathon. After watching the show, people are definitely going to want to visit and that’s good for everyone,” he said.

Already, Carlson said he’s noticed a buzz. The shirt he wore in the first episode — an OnBoard Bandit — is already selling in the Two Conchs online shop (twoconchsgear.com). And there’s been a slight uptick in bookings.

The show airs on the Sports-man Channel on Tuesday at 5 a.m., Wednesday at 11 a.m., Saturday at 5:30 a.m. and Sunday at 7:30 a.m. The 10 episodes of Season 1 will run through June before airing on the World Fishing Network from July to De-cember. Carlson said the crew will start shooting Season 2 sometime in June.

Throughout the show, they’ll be providing their clients with the best guided fishing experiences, catching some of the most exotic fish the Keys have to offer. When they’re not out on the boat with a client, they’ll be dealing with their usual day-to-day fishing company needs and participating in fishing events throughout the island.

There’s a story teller in 2019. Brendan Nolan and his friend Colin Farrell are coming to play music. And the Drake Irish

Dancers are new to the Florida Keys Celtic Festival, too, for the event that takes place Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 12-13 at Marathon Community Park.

“I always say this is going to be the best year ever,” said Rev. Debra Andrew Maconaughey of St. Columba Episcopal Church in Marathon. The church is the host of the annual festival, now in its sixth year, and the proceeds fund its good works. “We’re just excited that we have all the bands coming down, some new dancers, and new additions to our village that we are unveiling.”

Theo Derleth, who helps publicize the festival, is no less proud.

“This festival is turning out to be one of the premier festivals of the Florida Keys and one of the most family-friendly — there’s something for all ages,” he said.

Albannach, the Screaming Or-phans, West of Galway and the afore-mentioned Nolan and Farrell play multiple times a day on both Saturday and Sunday. It’s top-notch music enter-tainment by any measure, but the gold standard of Celtic music. There’s also the highland games — incredibly mus-cled men and women performing feats of strength and skill such as the caber toss, which is actually throwing around a … wait for it … telephone pole. The whole crowd stops to watch and listen when the Police Pipe & Drum Corps of Florida march the festival grounds. And, then, there’s those sheep herd-ing dogs, though, truth be told, Keys natives are usually more fascinated by those strange sheep.

“Festival goers love the tea tent,” said Derleth. “It’s one of people’s favor-ites, and the pub food is amazing too.”

Proceeds from the festival sup-port St. Columba’s Hammock House. It offers free after-school transportation, homework help and snacks during the school year. On school holidays, it offers camps. Maconaughey said the Hammock House has recently added some enrichment programs.

“We have ukulele lessons, gym-nastics and art classes and we’ve just started a Yale University curriculum called Mutt-i-grees that teaches the kids social skills,” she said.

Maconaughey heaps praise on the festival volunteers’ heads. “Last year it was sad; so many of our regular vol-unteers couldn’t come because homes were still damaged. So in 2019, it’s like a reunion. We’re so happy to see them again.”

Admission is $10 per day. The festival runs 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sat-urday, Jan. 12 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 13.

BLOOD MOON RISINGHERE COMES THE GREAT AMERICAN (LUNAR) ECLIPSE

From Sunday evening to Monday morning, Jan. 20-21, the entire U.S. will be treated to a total lunar eclipse — what the media likes

to call a “Blood Moon” eclipse. At 9:36 p.m., the moon will sweep into the Earth’s penumbra, or outer shadow, causing our nearest neighbor in space to darken gradually. Don’t expect to see any changes in the moon’s appearance right away, though — it takes about 20 minutes or so until keen-eyed observers will begin to notice slight shading on the eastern (left) limb.

Roughly an hour later, the moon will encounter the Earth’s darker, inner shadow called the umbra, which will vis-ibly reduce the once-bright full moon to a thin crescent and then ultimately to an eerie ruby-colored orb at the total phase, as red light refracted by the Earth’s atmosphere falls onto Luna’s surface. Totality begins at 11:42 p.m. and lasts for just over an hour. I always find it eerie at totality to see both a blood-red moon hanging in a darkened sky, and also how dark the landscape becomes after having been bathed in bright moon-light earlier that evening. At 12:44 a.m. total-ity comes to an end, and the eclipse phases now reverse themselves until the entire eclipse comes to an end at 2:49 a.m. local time. Being that dawn brings a workday, I can safely say I will not be sticking around to see the final stages of this eclipse!

I’m calling this the Greater American Eclipse because many more people across the country, including right here in the Keys, will view this totality compared to the Great American Total Solar Eclipse that the U.S. experienced back in 2017. Of course, a total lunar eclipse has none of the drama of a total solar eclipse, but still is a very beauti-ful sight to behold, as the normally bright full moon first “shrinks” then dramatically changes color. I always find it fascinating to see how many more stars become visible as the moon’s brightness dwindles and the sky darkens to reveal it amid the constellation in which it happens to be temporarily residing (in this case, Gemini heading into Cancer).

As you sit outside with drink in hand watching this spectacle, notice that the edge of the Earth’s umbra is round. This was an important discovery to ancient astronomers, as they made the connection that a round Earth would produce a round shadow—voila! But somewhere between then and Columbus’ time, this knowledge was lost,

and it took some intrepid explorers travers-ing oceans without falling off a flat Earth to confirm what the ancients had already known.

After your second drink, you may won-der why we don’t see a lunar eclipse at every full moon. The answer is a simple one—the moon orbits the Earth at an inclination of 5 degrees, so its orbit takes it north or south of the Earth’s shadow most months when it’s full. Only when the sun, earth and moon appear to make a straight line in space do eclipses occur, as one does this month.

Even though we now know what causes eclipses, they are still a surreal sight in the sky. Imagine, then, the fear they caused in former times, when most people had no idea what was causing their familiar full moon to unexpectedly shrink, darken, then redden without warning. Columbus used a lunar eclipse to his advantage when faced with almost certain death. On his fourth and final voyage to the New World, his ships were in bad shape from wood worms and weather, and he and his crew were almost out of provisions and were receiving no further help from the Native Americans, who already had deemed their guests outstayed their welcome. Thinking of how to save himself and his men, it dawned on him that there would be a total lunar eclipse taking place in a few days’ time, and he realized

he could manipulate this celestial event to potentially save all their lives.

Armed with this advance knowledge, he told the leader his god was angry

that they were receiving no assistance from the locals, and that as a sign of his god’s displeasure, the moon would be removed from the sky. Once the eclipse began, the leader and his people began to react in fear, eventually agreeing to help the Columbus party. Upon hearing this, the admiral retired to his cabin and “pleaded” with his god to restore

the moon to the sky, which of course, happened, pleasing the local people

and ensuring the survival of Columbus and his crew. How might have history

been written had the eclipse not happened when it did?

One last note: total lunar eclipses are notoriously unpredictable in their appear-ance, which can range from very bright to dark reddish to almost invisible, mostly due to the amount of particulates in the Earth’s atmosphere, which can absorb the red light that would normally fall on the moon during totality (I’m predicting a fairly bright eclipse, since the moon won’t travel too deeply into the Earth’s umbra). But of course, none of this means anything if we get an overcast sky on eclipse night, so let’s hope for clear weather. Happy viewing!

Charles Fulco is a science teacher and a NASA Solar System Ambassador. He also has been serving as AAS education and public outreach coordinator for the 2017/2024 U.S. total solar eclipses. Weather permitting, he will host a free lunar eclipse observing session at Founders Park on Sunday, Jan. 20, beginning at 8:30 p.m. Bring your own scopes and binoculars! Elected state leaders and Monroe County officials have set Janu-ary meetings to discuss issues important for Keys residents.

The first is set for Tuesday, Jan. 15. State Sen. Anitere Flores (R-Miami) and State Rep. Holly Raschein (R-Key Largo) will host

the meeting that begins at 10 a.m. at Marathon City Hall. The Monroe County Legislative Delegation will meet as it prepares for the 2019 ses-sion. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

More information is available from Julio Rodriguez at 305-453-1202 or by email at [email protected].

The second meeting takes place on Wednesday, Jan. 30 at the Mara-thon Government Center. The Monroe County Board of County Com-missioners will hold a special workshop beginning at 10 a.m. to discuss preliminary ideas regarding the current and future status of the Rate of Growth Ordinance (ROGO) for unincorporated Monroe County.

In 2012, based on modeling, the State of Florida concluded that in order for unincorporated Monroe County to meet the required 24-hour hurricane evacuation clearance time, it could be issued 1,970 new ROGO (building) permits. (Each of the Keys municipalities also has its own limits of ROGO permits to issue).

In 2012, unincorporated Monroe County had more than 8,000 pri-vately owned vacant parcels remaining.

As 2023 approaches, the county is developing strategies to address the number of vacant parcels that potentially exceed the total number of ROGO permits the state will allow the county to award. Currently, there are 1,059 ROGOs (630 market rate and 429 affordable) left to be awarded in unincorporated Monroe County and significantly more than 1,059 vacant lots remaining.

Policy 101.3.2 of the Monroe County Comprehensive Plan was ad-opted in 2016 and states that the county will reevaluate the ROGO per-mit distribution schedule after July 2018 if substantial financial support for land acquisition has been provided by state and/or federal partners.

Over the past two years, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection has spent more than $2 million to acquire parcels of vacant land and retire development rights using funding from the 2016 Florida Keys Stewardship Act. These state land acquisitions — combined with the county’s nearly $10 million spent on land acquisition for conserva-tion, density reduction and affordable housing — has helped reduce the county’s potential liability for vacant buildable parcels that exceed the number of ROGOs available.

The BOCC will discuss the possibility of slowing down the distribu-tion rate of available ROGO permits to make them last past 2023. This strategy would provide additional time to implement land acquisition and other strategies to reduce the demand for ROGO allocations and help transition land into public ownership.

Discussion also will include other preliminary ideas for policy changes that could help the county reduce potential takings liability in the future.

Public comment will be held during the first 30 minutes of the work-shop. The County Commission will take no action at this workshop. More public meetings will be held on this issue.

MARATHON WEEKLY / JANUARY 10, 201922 DARE I SAY IT

What do you do

when someone comes to visit who has never been to the Keys?

My son and his fiancée recently visited from Illinois. An-drew has been to the Keys a few times, but it had been a few years. Kristen was visiting for the first time.

They flew into Fort Lauderdale. I’d been hoping Kristen would get to watch her first Keys sunset along the Overseas Highway on the drive back to Marathon, one of those magnifi-cent spectacles that can take your breath away, but their flight was delayed and we drove home in the dark.

The next day, though, I became something I haven’t been in a while: a tourist. My wife and I are happy snowbirds, trading Illinois’ cold for the island life all winter long. The experience is still new enough after a couple of years that I find plenty to marvel at, but I don’t rush to see every sunset as I did the first winter. We have jobs. It’s not a vacation.

With Andrew and Kristen, we started off with a trip to Big Pine, stopping at the Blue Hole — one of the alligators was right below the viewing platform, prompting wide eyes and gasps — and then on to the No Name Pub for lunch.

We were having fun, but we had seen no Key deer. On our way back toward the highway — you know what’s coming, don’t you? — three deer were gathered at the roadside. I pulled over.

Kristen knew better than to touch or feed the animals, but when she knelt to take a photo, one

SEEING THE KEYS ANEWVisit by newcomer brings fresh vision

walked right up and gave her a big wet kiss on the cheek.

I’ve seen plenty of Key deer and I’d never seen that happen. Five more deer wandered by, several stopping by to say hello to both Kristen and Andrew.

I’m pretty sure that made their vacation right there. But we weren’t finished.

On the drive from the airport, I had remarked how cool it would be if the Turtle Hospital released one of its patients while they were here, but that was asking a lot.

Guess what happened? Yep. Andrew and Kristen were part of the columns that formed to escort Do-natello, a sub-adult loggerhead, back to the water at Sombrero Beach. That image is still in my head, the two of them in the throng watching as the turtle paddled away from shore.

We went with Kayak Dave for a trip through the mangroves of Boot Key. The guy is a skilled guide with a bottomless bag of corny jokes, so bad they’re good. We found our-selves ducking to avoid low-hanging branches, arriving at small clearings in the mangroves, paddling under fluffy clouds.

We ate at Sparky’s while Roger Jokela played music. We sat near the canal and, wouldn’t you know it, the weather got a little chilly. We all laughed, thinking how balmy these temperatures would feel in Illinois.

We went out on the Marathon Lady on a choppy day. A little too choppy for some people. An-drew and I hung out on an inside bench for a while. Kristen, who was herself under some duress, nevertheless made her way back out to the rail and persisted in try-ing to add to our meager catch of grunts, which were later declared delicious.

I dropped Andrew and Kristen off in Key West while I worked for a day. They visited the Butterfly Con-servatory, caught the dachshund parade and did some shopping. I caught up with them hours later, and we walked around the harbor, including a stop at Waterfront Brewery, and on to Duval Street. Yes, we stopped at Sloppy Joe’s. And we watched the sun go down at Mallory Square. Do you remem-ber the first time you did that?

Seeing the Keys through their eyes renewed a lot of it for me. I find myself thinking of all the things we didn’t get to do and places we didn’t get to go. It makes me eager for them to come back – and they’re already talking about a return trip – but it also gives me some ideas for this winter. I grabbed my camera a couple nights ago as the sunset approached.

My younger son is coming for a visit in a week. Wonder what we’ll do.

Proudly Presenting Modular Homes By

Affinity Building Systems

What they are building here?

NELE KIRTwww.keysweekly.com

Sheriff Rick Ramsay explains:Right beside the Marathon sheriff’s hangar at the air-

port there is a big crane and a number of busy construc-tion guys positioning tilt slab concrete panels that will

make up our new 12-lane gun range. Currently, the only place for our officers to train is at the NAS base, sometimes less than once a month, or at the Key Largo gun club, which is also an outdoor range. But our officers need constant training. If you don’t use it, you lose it. This facility will give us perfect training areas to better our skills on daily basis.

Within nine months we should be able to have our own, en-tirely indoor practice “field.” Eighty percent of the 5,000-square-foot space will be comprised of the gun range, 20 percent is for classroom space, an office, bathrooms and a space for cleaning and prepping our equipment.

It is a modular space — with preset fittings to construct temporary walls — and can be reconfigured to mimic a room, apartment or even a house. The range will have pop-up targets, even moving targets. We will be able to simulate a situation in a closed police car where the officer would have to take action while strapped into his or her seat.

The training area will also have a full surround sound and sound effects, such as people yelling, sirens, traffic, dogs barking, etc. (But the whole gun range is soundproofed and our neighbors will hear nothing.) We can also simulate bright blinking or flashing lights that could possibly impair our officer’s vision or we could train in a low light or in a pitch-black environment. The aim is to make the tactical shooting and any other training exercise as true to life as possible.

The new facility is built to Category 5 standards, raised above flood level, and designed so a generator can be plugged in, if needed. In case of the emergencies, such as a hurricane, the training facility can be transformed into a 60- or 80-bed bunk room for our officers, where they can rest and get ready for their next assignment.

The construction started last August and should be finished at the end of May. According to Joe Prest, the Biltmore Construc-tion superintendent, the most challenging part of the project has been dealing with elevation and groundwater.

The new facility will cost $4.4 million — $2 million of which came from Monroe County’s infrastructure fund and the remain-ing $2.4 million from the Sheriff’s fine and forfeiture account. There was no burden on taxpayers to build the much needed range and we will be able to keep our officers well trained for the safety of everyone visiting or living in the Keys.

My name is Rick Ramsay and I was born in Long Island, New York. In 1976 my family moved to the Keys. In 1987 I graduated from Florida Keys Community College and have been here ever since. I love diving, boating and fishing. My wife and I love the water around us. Can’t beat it!

Frank Farello has a long history of cooking in Mara-thon. But Frank’s Grill’s popularity has everything to do with his day-to-day successes as a chef. On any given “Turkey Tuesday,” Frank and his cousin

Joey are in the kitchen. Three pots bubble on the kitchen stoves – marinara sauce, turkey gravy for the special and a big one with boiling water to dip the al dente pasta into for quicker service.

Frank’s Grill, located on the bottom floor of the Town Square Mall, launched in 2006. “We opened small,” said Farello, “just the three of us. We wanted to keep it quiet at first. But a newspaper article came out and the next week I had to hire several more people.”

Previously he was a chef at the former Village Café in Marathon. When he opened his own place, customers didn’t hesitate to follow.

Currently, Frank’s Grill has 15 employees, including Frank’s wife Joanna and cousin Joey. Most of the staff has been working there since the restaurant opened in 2006 and play a big part in Frank and Joanna’s lives, Frank said.

The Italian-American lunch and dinner menu offer five different veal dishes, five chicken dishes but also a New York strip and ribeye, steak Roma, American lamb chops and duck a l’orange. There is spaghetti, of course, plus linguine, lasagna, ravioli and eggplant parmigiana.

“The Snapper Francaise is definitely a favorite,” Farello said. “People also like the lamb osso bucco and veal chop Milanese.” The snapper dish has an out-of-this-world juicy, buttery, citrusy, fresh taste of splendor.

COMFORT FOODFrank’s fans know a good thing

Why Italian? Well, Farello is a second-generation Italian. His dad came to this country from the port city of Bari in Italy to marry a lady from North Carolina. Frank was born and raised in the waterfront city of Norfolk, Va., where his Dad had a restaurant.

Farello helped in his father’s kitchen from age 10, and was an es-sential part by the time he was 16. “I would work Friday, Saturday and Sun-day — 30 hours — and then go back to school on Monday,” Farello said. “I earned five dollars an hour which wasn’t bad back in 1982.” He said he set some money aside to help out the family when his father later got sick, and continued to offer support to the family after he moved to the Keys to work alongside his Uncle Paul at Vil-lage Cafe.

When asked to explain Frank’s Grill’s enduring popularity, Farello shrugs his shoulders and smiles. “We put our heart into the cooking and treat everyone like family,” he said.

Frank’s Grill is located at 11400 Overseas Highway. It’s open for lunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and for dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday to Saturday. Dinner reservations are highly recom-mended. Call 305-289-7772.

NELE KIRTwww.keysweekly.com

FUN FRANK FACTS:• Frank doesn’t like fancy

kitchen gadgets. His favorite tool in the kitchen is a 10-inch chef’s knife.

• Favorite fishing show: “None. I don’t have time to watch those.”

• Favorite pastime: “Fishing. But I don’t catch much!”

• What he eats at home: Frank and his wife, Joanna, have been together for 20 years and have three children between the two of them. At home she cooks dishes from her native Poland. Frank said his favorite dessert is “Joanna’s Christmas cookies.”

Frank’s Grill is closed in September. Frank Farello’s customers tell him they plan their trips around his schedule to make sure he’s there to cook the catch! Pictured is the famous Snapper Française. NELE KIRT/Keys Weekly

Christopher Elwell“I think the design is just perfect for this unique development. The buyers will be the ones enjoying an inside and outside lifestyle to include boating, swimming, and relaxing at the end of a long, fun day. The interior design will allow them to be very proud of their interior design, yet feel casual enough to relax and put their feet up when need be.”

I n a place renowned for its luxurious vacation homes, the developers of The Reserve at Sombrero Beach have upped the ante by requesting the services of esteemed designer, Christopher Elwell, owner of Royal Furniture and Design.

With his extensive background dating back to 1990, Elwell has designed, remodeled, and repositioned thousands of homes throughout the Florida Keys, Key

West and the country. Known for his can-do attitude and amazing attention to detail, Christopher has been a long sought- after designer for owners looking for a visionary’s touch.

Mr. Elwell was tasked with not only the interior design but identifying “the vision” for the Elysium Residence, located at 449 Sombrero Beach Rd; the rst Estate Villa being oered at The Reserve. (“Elysium”) meaning Paradise and the tone setter for Elwell’s vision, Christopher explains, “by choosing a ‘Coastal Chic’ design, I thought ‘you’re in paradise’ and I want you to feel that, not only outside your home, but also continue that feeling inside. We are bringing the outside in and taking advantage of the amazing views of the water and the lush landscaping.”

When you pull up to The Reserve at Sombrero Beach, the developers want you to expect something spectacular. The furniture, all selected by Royal Furniture and Design, is a mixture of upholstered fabric pieces, distressed woods in multiple nishes and some brushed metal accents. It feels very coastal chic, elegant, yet comfortable.

Elwell says, “I think the design is just perfect for this unique develop-ment. The buyers will be the ones enjoying an inside and outside lifestyle to include boating, swimming, and relaxing at the end of a long, fun day. The interior will allow them to be very proud of their interior design, yet feel casual enough to relax and put their feet up when need be. The coastal chic décor will make them feel comfortable and relaxed whether they are entertaining friends or using the home themselves.”

The developer of The Reserve declares, “We are very excited to have Chris working on the Elysium Residence and know how extremely talented he is at walking into a completely empty room and transform-ing it into a great livable space. Given his background with homes in the Keys, we knew he would be a perfect t, and would be able to give our clients exactly the comfort and aesthetic level they are looking for when buying in the Keys.”

MARATHON WEEKLY / JANUARY 10, 201932 KEYS SCHOOLS

With two major school construc-tion projects underway in

Marathon — a partially recon-structed elementary school and new athletic fields for the high school — the newly unveiled Plantation Key School in the Upper Keys offers a hint of whats to come. The Upper Keys students arrived back to school on Jan. 8 and were greeted by a new state-of-the-art school facility. Students spent the morning touring the school and learn-ing where classrooms, the gymnasium and offices were located.

“We are all very excited to open the school,” said Princi-pal Lisa Taylor. “The teachers and staff have been working very hard to get the new build-ing ready for the students’ return.”

Located in a quiet residen-tial neighborhood at MM 90 bayside, Taylor said, the new building is bright and open to facilitate collaboration be-tween students and staff. The facility offers state-of-the-art technology, specialized areas for instruction in science, art, music and a gymnasium — something the old school didn’t have.

“We have a feature called Science on a Sphere that will bring exciting global instruc-tion right into our little is-land school,” Taylor said. “All classrooms are equipped with many new features like ClearTouch computers and flexible seating.”

People enter the facility through Discovery Boulevard. Taylor notes that it’s a very exciting hallway, as there’s a 30-plus-foot interactive map of the Keys with interesting historical information.

PKS elementary students are hard at work on their first day back to a new school facility.

A young pupil takes in the 35-foot interactive mural of the Florida Keys.

Students come back to 21st century facility

NEW YEAR, NEW SCHOOLJIM [email protected]

In addition, the Media Center, Makers Lab and Think Tank are all fea-tured classrooms along the route into the classroom building. The cafeteria is also a learning center with interactive science displays.

“The Performance Center is incor-porated in the cafeteria with a stage and seating for performances,” Taylor said. “We even have our very own Keys Café!”

Thorn Grafton, senior project manager with Zyscovich Architects, designed the facility. He said it’s an ex-citing place to learn, with flexible space that encourages interactive learning.

“They can personalize it and let it evolve ,” he said.

While the former PKS facility served the community well for many years, Monroe County Schools Super-intendent Mark Porter said it lacked many modern features and elements needed to provide a diverse and quality education experience for all students.

“We have now moved to the other end of the spectrum, as the new PKS is an industry-leading facility that provides teachers with a wide variety of tools to meet the individual needs of their students,” Porter said. “I am pleased to be able to provide such a first-class, 21st century learning facil-ity to the students and staff at PKS. I am grateful to the citizens of Monroe County for providing the resources to fund this effort through our half-cent sales tax.”

Monroe County School Board member Sue Woltanski, District 5, said the facility is a gem that will inspire

learning for generations. She said it’s a fantastic example of public school support from the community.

“The school really brought community members in as well as people involved in the school to get planning together; to see that initial vision, of what PKS could be, come to fruition is super exciting,” she said.

Woltanksi said PKS always has great teachers, and they’ve waited a long time to have an inspiring location to practice their craft.

“The school will become a great place for students learn-ing,” she said. “You walk in there and it will take your breath away.”

MARATHON WEEKLY / JANUARY 10, 201936 MONROE COUNTY

here will be some unusual traffic on the Overseas Highway this weekend.

Feel free to wave. Your hand or a flag.At 8 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, nearly four dozen

combat-wounded veterans will arrive at VFW Post 10211 in Key Largo for a weekend of events that will take them to Key West for the Wounded Warrior Bicycle Ride.

John Donnelly, a trustee of the VFW post, said he hopes people will come to the post to see the veterans off, and that those along their route will greet them.

“I’m certain their uplifting thoughts and encour-agement will help heal and assist them as they ready themselves for the ride ahead,” Donnelly said.

The 18 women and 29 men will set out from the VFW post, stopping for a water break at Coral Shores High School. The Upper Keys portion of the ride will end at Theatre of the Sea in Islamorada.

After a meet and greet at the Marathon Fire Rescue Station 14, the ride will head over the 7 Mile Bridge and stop at Veterans Memorial Park at the south end of the bridge.

WARRIORS WILL RIDEWOUNDED VETERANS TRAVERSE KEYS

On Saturday, Jan. 12, the veterans will ride from the naval air station on Boca Chica Key into Key West for a welcome ceremony and a community ride.

On Sunday, Jan. 13, the veterans will visit the Dol-phin Research Center on Grassy Key, where they will have the chance to swim with the dolphins.

This marks the 14th year the Wounded Warrior ride has been held in the Keys. This year, 47 military veterans from 12 states and the District of Columbia, some just out of the hospital for the first time, will participate.

More than 200 patriotic banners and yellow rib-bons will line U.S. 1 and downtown Key West.

Motorists should take extra time to get to their destination (see schedule). U.S. 1 will remain open during the ride, but motorists should be patient, use caution and realize there may be rolling lane shifts in traffic. Motorists are asked to take special notice of the 7 Mile Bridge ride on Friday afternoon and be very careful if crossing the bridge then.

WHAT TO DO THIS WEEKMainstreaming

NOW TRENDINGWATCH BIRD BOXThis bone-chilling Netflix original has created an international online craze. The #bird-boxchal-lenge has

taken hold of viewers in the extreme, and now people are blindfolding themselves — as characters in the movie must do along their harrow-ing journey — and undertaking dangerous challenges. Think walking through a busy interstate or driv-ing a scooter blindfolded. While the challenge itself is not recommended, the sound of mind and brave of heart should undertake watching the movie. Its apocalyptic mood nods to John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place,” and Sandra Bullock stuns as a remark-ably moving survivor, ferrying her children, Boy and Girl, to the promise of safety. The unseen fear? Some force that causes anyone who sees it to become suicidal. Shiver. Birdbox is available to Netflix subscribers.

READ THE HAND-MAID’S TALEIt’s a week for dys-topias! Originally published in 1985, Margaret At-wood’s “The

Handmaid’s Tale” has become an in-ternational phenomenon because of the eponymous Emmy-winning series on Hulu. Set in a (more) misogynistic, theocratic version of America, the tale follows Offred, a former publishing professional now imprisoned as a handmaid, valued only for her fertility and subject to systematic abuse at the hands of her “master.” Estranged from her husband and daughter, Offred’s only hope of escape is to (author Atwood’s homeland) Canada! Atwood is a master of speculative fiction, and she is the headliner of the Key West Literary Seminar, deliver-ing the keynote address this Friday, Jan. 11. Honorable mention: other Atwood favorites “Alias Grace,” “The Blind Assassin” and “The Cat’s Eye.” Available for purchase at Books & Books in Key West.

LISTEN LOWE INTERVIEWS LADY GAGACheck out Zane Lowe’s interview on Apple iTunes with music star and actor in “A Star is Born,” Lady GaGa. Lasting just over 27 minutes, the interview delves into the movie’s final

emotional scene, which was filmed on the same day she lost her friend, Sonja Durham, to stage IV cancer. She also talks about working with Tony Bennett and how that revived and brought her back to what she was before. She also discusses the moment she met Bradley Cooper.

UNDER THE INFLUENCEATWOOD HEADLINES 37TH ANNUAL LITERARY SEMINAR IN KEY WEST

The 37th annual Key West Literary Seminar, “Under the Influence: Archetype & Adaptation,” begins

Thursday, Jan. 10, at the San Carlos Institute, 516 Duval St., and runs through Sunday, Jan. 13. This year’s seminar, which is sold out, will ex-amine the roots of literary culture, exploring the influence of tales told by Homer and Shakespeare and in folk and fairy tale traditions the world over.

This year’s keynote speaker is Margaret Atwood, an iconic writer whose dystopian novel “The Handmaid’s Tale” has found new popular resonance with the television series of the same name. Atwood will delve into the literary underpinnings of this groundbreaking work, together with her Homeric and Shakespear-ean adaptations, “The Penelo-piad” and “Hag-Seed.” On Saturday night, Jan. 12, New Yorker poetry editor Kevin Young and acclaimed poet Rowan Ricardo Phillips sit down for a discussion of the influ-ence of music — from Beethoven to Big Pun — in their work.

Throughout the weekend, writers will discuss literary influ-ences and adaptions, including graphic novel treatments of “Fran-kenstein” and “The Wizard of Oz” with Victor LaValle and Eric

Shanower; adaptations of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” by Valerie Martin, and of “The Great Gatsby” by Steph-anie Powell Watts. Joyce Carol Oates will talk about the influence of H.G. Wells; Emily Wilson, about her translation of the Odyssey, which the New York Times calls “radically contemporary”; and Ger-aldine Brooks and Nicole Gal-land discuss the flexibility of good stories from “Othello” to “Little Women.” Dexter Palmer offers a dark new tale inspired by “The Em-peror’s New Clothes,” while Naomi Novik, Danielle Paige and Meg Cabot explore the intersection of fairy tales and modern femininity.

Although the seminar is sold out, a new series of free programs will be held after the seminar at various locations from Jan. 13-16. The full schedule is at kwls.org/2019-free-programs. Rowan Ricardo Phillips will meet with students from Key West and Mara-thon high schools. An expanded schedule of The Old Town Liter-ary Walking Tours is also offered throughout the seminar weekend. More information is available from Arlo Haskell, the seminar’s execu-tive director, at [email protected] or 305-293-9291. — Contributed

MARATHON WEEKLY / JANUARY 10, 201940 KEYS DISEASE

New arriv-als to the islands have

missed some in-credible moments in Keys history. I’d like to take you down Memory Lane this week to recall the true story of how one man’s flatulence killed a coral reef.

But first, let me tell you a true story about the pleasant folks one encounters while driving the Over-

seas Highway in the Keys. When you arrive in the Keys (which actually start in Key Largo, approximately MM 109 on U.S. 1, or farther north on Card Sound Road), it’s typical to adopt a more laid-back attitude. At least, that’s the theory.

Unfortunately, a gentleman (and I use the term loosely) from Illinois was a little unclear on the concept. Perhaps the rules of the road are different in Illinois, but where I come from, one doesn’t drive 30 mph in the left lane in a 45 mph zone. No problem – I signal to get around him on the right. Just as I pull even with his back bumper, he starts coming over into my lane without giving me the benefit of any signal whatsoever. I hit the brakes and the horn simultaneously, but he was insistent upon getting into the right lane no matter what. Finally, I’m able to make it around him in the left lane. As I glance over to see with my own eyes the brainiac who’s driving the Illinois-mobile, I notice that he’s extended Mr. Single-Digit-Finger-Puppet and is waving it at me. Yes, the merry Midwesterner cut me off, and then flipped me off! It was tough, but I somehow resisted the urge to run Mr. Happy Camper off the road. Now, back to the main story…

A new environmental warning may soon be issued forth from the “head” honchos at the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. “Flushed” with ex-citement, our saviors of the reef would spread the word about a new gaseous danger to our precious coral. I envision the posters, fliers, and newspaper ads as follows:

FLATULENCE KILLS!Save Our Reefs — Please Don’t

Pass Gas!As goofy as this sounds, I swear

that the basis for this environmental warning is totally based on fact. Keep reading to find out all the malodorous details!

It may be hard to believe, but there really is a connection between flatu-lence and coral reef damage. This is a story too bizarre to have been made up (it’s a gas!), and the key players are a ship captain named Michael Dick (honest!), an unnamed crewmember, and a 165-foot research vessel named the Columbus Iselin. Even though the boat is fairly large, it reportedly has a rather small, confined wheelhouse. Now imagine a hot August day in 1994 off of Looe Key. One captain and one crewmember are sitting inside this cramped wheelhouse when, seem-ingly straight from the bowels of Hell itself arises an aroma so foul, a stench so pervasive, that the only thing to do is bail. Get the hell out of the wheel-house and air the mother out! As the noxious flatulence fumes begin to dis-sipate into the surrounding precious environment, a very distinct sound is heard — the sound of a 165-foot ship’s hull getting up close and personal with the coral reef at the Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary.

Now that you know that flatulence can kill coral, you may be asking what you can do to prevent such needless tragedy from occurring again. The “crack” research staff here at Keys Disease Central has come up with our own list of preventive measures designed to protect our reefs from the horrible flatulence threat:

1) Never pass gas in the wheel-house.

2) If you absolutely must pass gas in the wheelhouse, make sure your boat is far away from any coral.

3) If you absolutely must pass gas in the wheelhouse, and your boat is heading toward the reef, break out your new anti-flatulence gasmask (soon to be U.S.C.G. required equip-ment on all vessels) and steer your boat safely away from the reef.

By following these simple guide-lines, we can make our reefs safe from the horrible threat of dangerous coral-threatening flatulence.

The show centers on two nuns at the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing who have been making wine, secretly, to keep the doors open. What is something most people don’t know about you? I want to be a role model and influence people in a great way so that they realize there is more to life than just games.

Who is your all-time favorite teacher and why? Mrs. Meier. I had her for two years and she was so kind and always inspired me to go above and beyond.

What does “a good education” mean to you? A good education takes serious dedication and it starts with you and only you.

What is the dumbest rule at your school? The best? The worst rule is that we are not allowed to wear hoodies. The best is that now we have the chance to wear everyday clothes with some limits.

What are your plans after high school? I want to go to Harvard.

What do you hope to be remem-bered for at MMS? A kind and hard-working student.

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? Playing with my friends outside or spending time with my father.

Will you make the Keys your per-manent home? Why or why not? It depends on where my career takes me.

What two things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? I want to have my own of-fice and company as a lawyer. I want to finish my education at Harvard.

The Marathon Weekly is proud to partner with Marathon Middle School faculty and students in choosing “The Student of the Week.” Recipients are chosen on qualifications including academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude. ‘NEW EROTICA’ BRINGS DEADPAN WIT, SARCASM

Sorry boys, this one is for the girls. Whether a zygote or Betty White, any woman can relate to the latest liter-

ary buzz, “New Erotica For Femi-nists: Satirical Fantasies of Love, Lust, & Equal Pay,” written by four women comedians: Caitlin Kunkel, Brooke Preston, Fiona Taylor and Carrie Wittmer. Coming to Books & Books at the Studios of Key West on Saturday, Jan. 19, author Caitlin Kunkel will be turning us on by talking about everything a woman wants … and it has nothing to do with Spanx, calorie-free wine or Brad Pitt.

From Mary Poppins to Ann Coulter, women of all types can relate to these humorous vignettes, written with deadpan wit and well-earned sarcasm. The writers tackle relationships, careers, parenthood and even literary legends such as “Romeo and Juliet” (hint: Juliet fi-nally sees it as a toxic relationship). Their point? Flip the switch on ste-reotypes and humorously call out well-worn scenarios for women. To wit: “He calls me into his office and closes the door … to promote me. He promotes me again and again. I am wild with ecstasy.”

“We had an all-female team that gave us confidence,” said au-thor Kunkel. “It became funny and depressing how universal these stories are.” The authors pooled together ideas and looked to actual erotica for terms and verbiage. Then they came to an agreement on things that made them mad and what made them think about

HAYS [email protected]

women’s roles in society. No story was written by a single author, but shared and edited together. “We needed to get away from angry satire and lighten up a little,” said Kunkel.

“New Erotica” provides an up-dated version of the Adam and Eve myth (“She decided to do some fol-low-up research on her own rather than trust a f*#*ing talking snake”) and comments on pop culture with-out discrepancy (of course Benedict Cumberbatch should be a safe word!) but Harry Potter didn’t make the cut. It’s a #metoo lollipop that goes down with delight. There’s no subversive bitterness, just a wink and jab at how women can alternately be viewed, for example. “I just read a science fiction novel with zero violence against women to motivate the male protagonist.” Boom.

Incredibly short and to the point, “New Erotica” masters come-dic timing and multiple mic drops. This little novella is the perfect addition to the bathroom, placed perfectly so it would delight some and, perhaps, educate a few more.

Talk and book signing with Caitlin Kunkel Saturday, Jan. 19, 6 to 8 p.m., free

Kunkel will appear in conver-sation with local comedian and journalist Gwen Filosa.

from around the nation, will be held on Jan. 18-20 in Islamo-rada.

“We’ve invited our favorite Florida breweries to join with some of the country’s top bluegrass, newgrass and Ameri-cana performers for three days of great music in the Florida Keys,” said David Feder, president of ICE. “We’ve got square dancing, jamming, local beer, and a grand Sunday concert with the stars and rising stars of bluegrass and newgrass.”

On Saturday, Jan. 19, a Pickin’ Party with five bands starts at 4 p.m. at Heartbreakers, 81611 Old Highway, Islamorada. MARATHON WEEKLY / JANUARY 10, 201956

Ginger Henderson, Broker-Associate(cell) 305-731-5751

[email protected]

Yes it is true. American Caribbean Real Estate Middle & Lower Keys has been sold to

Berkshire Hathaway Home Services and American Caribbean Vacation Rentals has been

sold to Leslie Christensen, a shining star in our real estate world. The sales were finalized

New Year’s Eve. So Happy New Year to us all!

I’m not as old as Warren Buffett … so I’m not retiring either! I’m changing gears. I will

be focusing on Listing and Selling real estate for the benefit of my clients, customers and

friends in the Florida Keys.

My Mother, Marilyn Henderson, dragged me into the real estate business in the 70s.

When my mother opened the company in 1982 she brought me in as a partner. I will

forever be grateful for her vision, determination, work ethic and positive attitude. I am my

mother’s daughter, after all.

As I look forward into the future, I will be doing what I love: bringing Buyers and

Sellers together here in the Florida Keys. I firmly believe in the future of real estate in our

beautiful chain of Islands. This next chapter of “My Book of Real Estate” only gets better.

Please call me if can be of service to you with your real estate sales or acquisitions.
