You couldn’t pick a better site for the Madison Antique Showcase & Sale – theMarriott West Hotel & Convention Center just west of Madison, Wisconsin. Yes, thisis the very same Madison Antique Showcase & Sale that had been hosted by theDane County Expo Center for the past few years. But parking concerns and morecaused organizer Larry Kaczmarek to move the event a few miles west of downtownto its posh new digs at the Marriott West Hotel & Conference Center. Gone are theconcrete floors and roof trusses - replaced with carpeting and chandeliers. One thingdid stay the same though: the quality of the fifty-plus exhibitors’ goods.

And among those dealers were some of the region’s best antique furniture purvey-ors. They included North Dakota’s Amity Marketing, who came with a wide rangeof period furniture from 19th century American country to 20th century industrial.Second Chance Antiques turned heads with pieces including an ornate quarter-sawnoak dental cabinet. And the furniture display of Beneath the Dust was just as nice,

with painted primitives happily mixed in with the restored brown furniture they’reknown for.

Vintage toys more your thing? Pearmont Antiques is always a good place to startlooking - their display filled with classic toys from cast iron to litho-tin wind-ups.Also there: a choice 1948 golf-themed calendar signed by legend Bobby Jones him-self. Other specialty dealers sprinkled around the show meant there really was“something for everyone” at the two-day event. Blackwolf Antiques and Laura’sCollectibles both came with huge vintage jewelry inventories. And Grape & Cable’shuge array of art glass was given a run for its money by Texas dealer Vine of Time.

Larry & Cheryl Kaczmarek did their usual terrific great job promoting the event, continuing last year’s very-popular $1 appraisal clinic on both days of the show. Formore information about the event, just give them a call at 920-993-9817, or visitwww.madisonantiqueshow.com. And as always, keep an eye out for listings of nextyear’s 20th Annual Madison Antique Showcase & Sale in the Auction ActionAntique News!

We received a call from Joe nearly ayear ago asking questions on how theauction could work as he prepared him-self for the tough decision to sell. Latelast fall, a second call came from Joe andhe indicated that he wanted to have anauction in the spring. We worked withboth Joe and Annie on getting picturestaken of the toys to be sold in addition tocompiling a long list of those items forthe next several months. Due to the vol-ume of his collection, it was decided thata second, and possibly a third auctionwould be necessary. So the day had nowcome and both Joe and Annie decided toattend the sale and were anxious to see

how things would fare. The bidders startedarriving that morning about an hour beforeviewing time was posted but all went well.

Bidders of all ages attended and one of the best buyers was an 11 year old boy attend-ing with his Grandpa who used his own money to buy some toys. We utilized our“professional” marketing/staging person who did an excellent job laying out the col-lection to be sold that day. The auction started promptly at noon with most of thebidding crowd having enjoyed a fantastic brunch hosted by the Darboy Club thatmorning. The sale went great and Joe and Annie were very pleased with the out-come. Most of the toys were never out of the original boxes and ranged from the1940's to current. There was a wide variety of all brand names of farm tractors and

machinery as well as many col-lectible farm related items. A fewspecial items included in this salewere a 1940's Ertl H that was alloriginal and sold for $300. Therewas also many 1/8 scale toyswhich continue to be a popularitem with the collectors. AFarmall 560 sold for $195 while an“M” brought $190. A John DeereModel L spreader brought $325and a disk $225. Most of the toyswere 1/16 scale and products ofErtl, Spec Cast and Scale Models.Since Annie once owned a PTCruiser, there were several modelsof that particular car, too. In total, there were 580 lots that were soldthat day as the sale concluded at4:40pm and everyone took hometheir new treasures. The secondauction for the Thomas collectionis scheduled for Sunday, October2, 2016 at noon at the Darboy Club.Be sure to mark your calendar foranother great sale day with a largervariety of toys. How are these three items relatedto the history of Celluloid?1) An antique billiard ball

2) A Celluloid button3) A ping-pong ball

A brief history lessonabout Celluloid buttons willreveal the answers. Celluloidwas invented in 1869 by the American inventor, John Wesley Hyatt. It was devel-oped from the compound Cellulose, which is a combination of wood fiber andcotton fiber.

In 1862 the British inventor, Alexander Parkes, was given credit forinventing Cellulose — the first true plastic. He named it Parkesine. In those earlyyears there was much chemical experimentation with Parkesine. They were look-ing for ways to stabilize and manipulate it so as to manufacture products for theever-growing world market. Although treating it with nitric acid produced manyuses for it, this method went by the wayside because it was still too unstable andvery costly to manufacture.

Around the same time that all of this chemical experimentation wasgoing on, an American company called Phelan and Collender in 1862 offered aprize of $10,000 to anyone that could invent a satisfactory substitute for Ivory. They used Ivory, which came primarily from elephant tusks, for the manufactur-ing of billiard balls. The game of Billiards was gaining in popularity at that timeand elephant tusks were becoming increasingly scarce. The company thatoffered the $10,000 prize is still in business today and is known as the BrunswickCorporation.

The American inventor John Wesley Hyatt took up the challenge in 1862.Hyatt, who had over 100 patents to his name, wasdetermined to win the $10,000 prize. One day inthe mid-1860's while working in his lab, he acci-dently spilled a bottle of Colloidine on theCellulose material that he was experimenting with.He found that it congealed his Cellulose into atough, flexible mass. He decided to make a demoset of billiard balls with this new material. Thisnew material worked to some extent, but it wasstill too unstable. It frequently caused small explo-sions when the billiard balls collided and the bil-

liard balls would sometimes shatter because they had become too brittle. So back to the laboratory he went. In 1868 he found a solution to these

problems. He found that when Camphor, which is a by-product of the Laurel tree, was added to the raw Cellulose it caused the problems to disappear. He filed fora patent in 1869, and he named his new product, Celluloid. This product was thefirst thermoplastic: a substance molded under heat and pressure that would retainits shape when the heat and pressure were removed. He also won the $10,000prize.

Buttons were not on the list of the many products that used Celluloid intheir manufacturing processes in those early years. Combs, pins, umbrella han-dles, eyeglass frames, dentures, piano keys, photographic film, and billiard ballsall preceded buttons. The use of Celluloid in button manufacturingdid not start to appear until one or two decades later.

The earliest buttons that used Celluloid used it as aclear sheet to protect lithographs and for background and trim.Today, those earliest buttons that used Celluloid are calledVictorian Celluloid buttons.

The first patent for the Celluloid tighttop button wasn'tmade until the year 1917. The tight-top Celluloid buttons were themost abundant type of Celluloid buttons made and thus, most Celluloid buttonsare classified as Modern vs. Antique buttons. Celluloid buttons reached theirpeak in the late 1930's, but by the 1940's were being phased out and replaced byother plastic type material buttons.

The first patent for the Celluloid tighttop button wasn'tmade until the year 1917. The tight-top Celluloid buttonswere the most abundant type of Celluloid buttons madeand thus, most Celluloid buttons are classified as Modernvs. Antique buttons. Celluloid buttons reached their peakin the late 1930's, but by the 1940's were being phased outand replaced by other plastic type material buttons.

The main reason that Celluloid lost its luster wasbecause of its high flammability and its degradation problems. The commondegradation problem occurred because the Camphor worked its way out ofthe button. This degradation when combined with water or water vapor wouldform a nitric acid gas that is very corrosive to metal, fabric, paper, and othermaterials. Extreme heat and UV ray exposurealso contributed to the problem. Those thingscaused the button, or buttons to become brittleand they would develop deep crazing. The but-tons affected would completely crumble awayin time.

What can you do if you see this type ofdamage to your buttons? The answer is nothingbecause there is no way to stop this degradationonce it has begun. The buttons affected shouldbe discarded and the remaining buttons shouldbe given a light cleaning.

How can you prevent this from happen-ing to your buttons? Celluloid buttons should bestored separately from your other buttons, partic-ularly metals. They should be kept out of directUV exposure and they should have proper ventilation and temperature controls. With the proper care most all of your Celluloid buttons will be around for manyyears to come.

After reading this short history on Celluloid, button collectors shouldhave a deep appreciation for the antique billiard balls of the past because with-out them, Celluloid buttons would never have been invented, and thus, we wouldnot have any to collect. Finally, do you know what the only Celluloid productnow made in any quantity is? The answer is the ping-pong ball!
