YUGMARG, CHANDIGARH, TUESDAY, JANUARY 4, 2022

Literature & Health

Life may not always be a bed ofroses , neither it is full ofthorns" which signifies life is a

combination of struggles and happi-ness. In our daily life many challe-neges and problems beset our path ofjourney , nonetheless there are oasisof peace of happiness..Prosperity inlife never comes on its own..For everydark night, there is a brighter day.Success or failure, happiness or sor-row moments are part of life and varyfrom person to person.

Such is the lesson learnt from theriveting story of Anand Mirdha , atribal boy from Kuda community ofPuliharam village under Jujumara po-lice station of Sambalpur district.Puliharam village was famous for itsrich ecological habitat with denseforests and a green canopy with thriv-ing agricultivation in the locality

dominantly inhabited by Kuda Com-munity tribals. Anand Mirdha , theyoungest of 4 siblings was passingpeaceful days with hs parents at vil-lage Puliharam deeply engrossed inthe lap of nature and dependant onnatural produce and forest products. But the cruel fate had its twist as hisbeloved father, the only breadwinnerof the family breathed his last untime-ly which descended stark plight to thedisgraced family of Mirdha. Withpassing away of his father, the familystarted sinking with uncertainties likea rudderless boat in the sea.The kithand kin of Ananada started distancingthemselves at the hour of crisis.

The misfortune and financial dis-tress of Ananda deeply influenced hisuncle Prahallad Mirdha who waskkind enough to provided shelter andsupport at Khutaraguda village. The

boy with his family members and wid-owed mother lived in the uncles housewith basic needs. Amidst the gloomydays, a silver lining flashed and des-tiny smiled on the family.

His uncle Prahallad Mirdha gotan information that one mRP.K.Swain Deputy Manager at Burlais searching one maid to assist asnurse to his spouse who is sufferingfrom illness .Without any secondthoughts, his uncle immediately in-tended to grab the opportunity andcounselled the elder sister of Anandto proceed to Burla for the assignmentat the Deputy Managers house beinga source of livelihood.

Time was so cruel and destiny wasmost adverse which was beyond any-one's imagination. To their utter dis-may, his uncle who anchored themand sheltered them passed away after

a brief illness .This untimely death ofhis uncle further deteriorated theplight of Anand .

The last straw which saved themalso sunk and their life became bur-densome to his uncle as the breadwin-ner left for hevenly abode. At this cru-cial moment.Mr Swain the houseowner and employer of his elder sistercame to their rescue and providedshelter to the entire family of Anand. His benevolent deeds exceeded allexpectations as Anand Mirdha andhis elder brother secured admission atKISS, Bhubaneswar.at 6th class.Anand Mirdha and his elder brotherwere very much obliged for their en-try to the worlds largest mega resi-dential school providing quality edu-cation to the underprivileged indige-nous students absolute free of cost.Itwas a great boon for the hapless

Anand who thanked and were highlyindebted to Founder for embracingthe educational model which is meantfor emancipation and empowermentof the deprived indigenous children. The tribal boy imbibed the true spiritand adopted the discipline of KISSwhich is amenable for academic ex-cellence and also takes due care to re-tain the rich heritage , culture, lan-guage , ethnic practices of tribal peo-ple including proper documentation, and augmenting the same.

No doubt the student centric aca-demic environment along with voca-tional skills , life support skills, sportsand other well fare measures anchoredby the mentors, teachers, guides andtrainers at KISS, Bhubaneswar en-ables Anand to pursue his studies has-sel free without any financial burden.Of course the family of Anand was

definitely not in position to afford thecost of quality education which KISSensured to indigenous children.

Many poisonsThe battle against air pollution must be fought on

multiple fronts. That seems to be the gist of thefindings of a study conducted by the Indian In-

stitute of Technology, Delhi which found that morethan half of the total load of PM2.5, a deadly air pol-lutant, in Bengal’s air comes from beyond its border, particularly Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. An-other study by the Bose Institute, conducted between2004 and 2018, has concluded that about 20 to 25 percent of the overall PM2.5 in Calcutta comes from out-side Bengal. Apart from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar andJharkhand, Assam, Meghalaya as well as neighbour-ing countries like Bangladesh and Nepal contribute toCalcutta’s poisoned air. What makes transborder pol-lution tricky is that it can depend on the vagaries ofthe weather: during early March, a significant propor-tion of pollutants comes from Odisha and AndhraPradesh through the Bay of Bengal and the Sunder-bans. These findings challenge some old assumptions. For long, smoke-belching vehicles were regarded asthe primary source of urban pollution. The recentstudies indicate this to be partially true: transportcaused 45-55 per cent of the total PM2.5 content inCalcutta between 2004 to 2009. The principal culpritnow is transboundary pollutants, followed by con-struction activities and errant vehicles.

The growing and mutable threat of air pollutionmakes it amply clear that the hydra-headed problemrequires nimble solutions. The Bengal governmentmust work in tandem with neighbouring states to ad-dress the toxic cloud that hangs heavy over the Indo-Gangetic plain and is made up of vehicular pollution,coal-fired power plants, unscientific waste andgarbage burning, as well as dung and cooking fuelsthat turn households into potential gas chambers. Theintra-government collaboration would yield an addi-tional bonus: it could strengthen India’s federal struc-ture that has frayed in recent years. Bengal also needsto address localized factors: carbon emissions andunchecked construction activities warrant action. Pol-icy intervention must also be even. Towns and vil-lages often elude mitigatory mechanisms even thoughdata indicate that non-urban centres suffer from airpollution as well. India’s mortality load on account oftoxic air is significant. Strategies to combat pollutionmust, therefore, be alert to existing threats and be ableto anticipate and act on the changing nature of thesources of pollution.

A powerful Chinese navy isready to flex its muscles

Last year was a phenomenal one forChina’s navy – the People’s Libera-tion Army Navy (PLAN) – with ap-

proximately 170,000 tonnes’ worth of newships commissioned in 2021. Armed withsuch an influx of vessels every year, thePLAN has become one of the most modernand capable navies in the world, far eclips-ing any other Asian navy.

The year’s haul included one Type094A ballistic missile submarine (SSBN),two Type 075 helicopter landing docks(LHD), three Type 055 cruisers, seven Type052D destroyers, six Type 056A corvettes, six Type 082II mine countermeasure ves-sels, one cable-laying ship and three Type927 surveillance ships.

The sheer quantity and diversity ofmodern ships in the PLAN are imbuing itwith growing confidence, bolstered by na-tionalism fanned by an increasingly martialcommunist party. China is not only lookingto dominate waters close to its coast but tobreak out beyond the so-called First IslandChain and to influence the narrative and flya flag in distant oceans.

Indeed, 2022 will mark the 14th year ofa continuous Chinese naval presence in theGulf of Aden, supported by a PLA base inDjibouti. The largest of the aforementionedlist of ships completed in 2021 is the Type075 LHD, which looks similar to an aircraftcarrier thanks to its flat deck. An LHD car-ries a large number of helicopters (up to 28in the case of China’s Type 075), plus it ac-commodates landing craft and hovercraft inan internal well deck for amphibious oper-ations. Up to 1,000 marines and their am-phibious assault vehicles can be carriedtoo. The PLAN’s first Type 075 christenedHainan of approximately 36,000-tonne dis-placement was commissioned into theSouth Sea Fleet at Sanya, Hainan Island on23 April 2021, whilst the second formallyentered service on 26 December as a belat-ed “Christmas present”. (Ironically, Chi-na’s paranoia means religious festivals

such as Christmas are outlawed by newlaws, even though an estimated 5 per centof the Chinese population are Christians).

The second LHD, commissioned atZhoushan Naval Base as Guangxi, was as-signed to the East Sea Fleet focuses espe-cially on operations against Taiwan. Inter-estingly, the East Sea Fleet had hitherto notreceived either aircraft carriers or LHDs.

Guangxi had been launched on 22 April2020 and commenced sea trials in Decem-ber that year. As well as its helicopter andamphibious capabilities, the LHD lends it-self to employment as a logistics and com-mand platform for any contingency opera-tions against Taiwan. Aircraft carriersmeanwhile could be used to dissuade anyintervention by the USA and allies in anyfuture Chinese attack on Taiwan.

More LHDs are on the way too, be-cause a third Type 075 was launched by the

Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghaion 29 January 2021, and it commenced seatrials on 25 November 2021.

China is maintaining an impressiveshipbuilding rate, with one LHD launchedevery six months so far. Indeed, no othercountry can match the record pace of ship-building achieved by China. For the first-of-class Type 075, it took 340 days fromlaunch to maiden journey. By the time ofthe second LHD, this milestone had re-duced to 245 days, despite the impact ofCOVID-19.

As another example of shipbuildingproductivity, the same Hudong Zonghua fa-cility launched two Type 054A frigates anda Type 071E landing platform dock (LPD)amphibious ship (the latter is being built forThailand) on the same day. The same yardhas been building Type 054A/P frigates forPakistan too.

Type 075s give the PLA far better am-phibious and helicopter lift capacity thanwhat its current fleet of eight Type 071LPDs can. It is unclear how many Type075s China will build, but it is likely to beat least six, some even claiming eight. These LHDs could be supplemented in thefuture by the larger Type 076. Periodic up-dates of satellite imagery over JiangnanChangxingdao shipyard in Shanghai showthat progress is being made on the PLAN’sthird aircraft carrier as well. Called theType 003, this carrier is quite different tothe preceding two since it is larger and dis-penses with a ski-jump ramp on the bow toassist aircraft launches.

Instead, the Type 003 will use a cata-pult launch system, just as the US Navy(USN) does. However, China made thetechnological leap straight to an electro-magnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS)instead of adopting a steam-powered cata-pult system first. All modern American car-riers used steam catapults up until the ar-rival of the first EMALS-equipped Ford-class carrier.

The EMALS is evident in satellite im-agery of the Type 003 carrier, with twolaunch systems on the bow and one in awaist position. The same imagery suggeststhe vessel is about 316m long and 71.3mwide. Two elevators to raise and lower air-craft from/to the hangar deck are some 21mwide, these positioned on the starboard sideof the ship.

EMALS is important to the PLAN, forit will allow more heavily armed and fueledfighters to take off from the Type 003 thanis possible from Type 001 and 002 carriers. This also means different aircraft such asthe developmental KJ-600 airborne earlywarning aircraft can operate from the Type003, something impossible on precedingcarriers. Incidentally, a massive new drydock in Sanya has been constructed, onelarge enough to accommodate the Type 003carrier.

Best time to make yourinvestment decisions

Anew study has foundthat if you are a nightowl, making your in-

vestment decisions first thing inthe morning might be a badidea. The research has beenpublished in the 'Journal ofBusiness Venturing'.

The study showed time-based factors, like time of dayand whether you're a morningor evening person, can influ-ence investment decisions andyour ability to evaluate whethera startup will be successful.

"Early-stage investments --when not a lot is typicallyknown about a company andthe time to make a decision iscompressed -- can be risky withhigh failure rates," said JeffGish, assistant professor ofmanagement at UCF and a co-author of the story.

"Trying to pick a winner isdifficult enough under thosecircumstances, but we've alsolearned that when you makethose decisions can have a sig-nificant impact on whether theyturn out to be successful," headded. Individuals have an in-

ternal clock called circadianrhythm that regulates our alert-ness and awake-sleep cycles. Ingeneral, individuals tend to fallinto three general types with re-spect to what time of day theyare more awake and alert in a24-hour cycle. Those with a cir-cadian process shifted earlier inthe day are known as larks, while owls are more alert laterin the day. The third group ofindividuals is the intermediate.

"What we found was whenindividuals evaluated an invest-ment opportunity at a time thatconflicted with their body's nat-ural internal clock -- for exam-

ple, a morning person or larkmaking a decision late in theday or evening -- they tended tomake poor choices," said Cris-tiano Guarana, assistant profes-sor of management and entre-preneurship at the IU KelleySchool of Business and a co-author.

"This tension may not berecognized by those making theinvestment decision and overtime could result in substantiallosses for people who, on aver-age, possess much less invest-ment knowledge than angel in-vestors and venture capitalists,"Guarana added.

Researchers find kids are morecomfortable confronting peers

Arecent study ledby an interna-tional team of re-

searchers has found thatchildren globally willchallenge peers if theybreak the 'rules', buthow they challengethem varies betweencultures.

The study has beenpublished in the 'Pro-ceedings of the Nation-al Academy of SciencesJournal'.

Led by the Univer-sity of Plymouth, UKand Freie UniversitatBerlin, Germany, thestudy analysed the be-haviour of 376 childrenaged five to eight fromeight societies in Africa,Asia, Europe, and SouthAmerica.

The children wereeach taught to play ablock sorting game -with half taught to sortthe blocks by colour, and half taught to sort

them by shape. Theywere then put into pairs, with one playing thegame and the other ob-serving. The researchshowed that observersintervened more oftenwhen the other child ap-peared to play by thewrong set of rules. Themore a child intervened, the more likely theirpartner was to changetheir behaviour. Thestudy also showed thatthe type of intervention

varied - with childrenfrom rural areas usingimperative verbalprotest more than chil-dren from urban areas.

The study was thefirst to analyse chil-dren's behaviour inchallenging norm viola-tions across culturesworldwide, and addedto our understanding ofhow norms allowedpeople to achieve coor-dination and coopera-tion.
