Curiosity, when fueled with stimulating ideas in a non-judgmental and unbiased environment becomes knowledge. And knowledge coupled with action, creates change. Change can be challenging. It requires new ways of thinking about things that have become routine and comfortable. And that’s why, FLAME School of Business has not only embraced it, it is also striving to become it. We are doing this with new ideas, with innovative and timely programs. Programs that give students the insights and skills that enable them to lead, think strategically and manage change. Because, when it comes to change, you can either create it, or be swept away by it.

FLAME School of Business is rooted in liberal education. It’s anchored in knowledge. It’s a leap towards tomorrow. Because we understand that today, change is all around us. What once was a comfortable rate of change has now become fast-paced. Our PedagogyLearning at FLAME School of Business happens both in classrooms and outside. Our pedagogy is distinct and different from other business schools in India. We believe in case study methodology and research based projects; not just rote learning. Our students are kept on their toes with regular presentations. Learning happens through group discussions just as much as it happens through internal journeys at our Experiential Lab. Our students are never passive listeners during lectures. Lecture discussions are a norm at FLAME School of Business. The school is a living network of ideas – one that challenges students to think rigorously and encourages them to put their thinking into action. FLAME School of Business’ eclectic and international curriculum gives students a fantastic opportunity to meet new people, share experiences and view the world from different perspectives. We believe in moulding students for tomorrow. Workshops that teach social skills and values of life are an integral part of the curriculum. Students also take active part in sports – from golf to indoor sports – ensuring their holistic development.

Curricular InnovationsThe IOC - FLAME Rural Marketing FairEvery year, the students of FLAME School of Business organize The Rural Marketing Fair as a major initiative to bolster Indian Industry’s potential to understand, tap and serve the ever-growing rural markets. As a field-based course, this fair was organized twice at Jalgaon and once in Buldhana in Maharashtra. The course emphasizes that rural markets, with increasing purchasing power and changing mindsets, have been projected to have more than 50% of the total market share by 2015. The time is therefore right to encourage the current management students or future leaders to get exposed to the rural market realities. The fair is in the format of stalls organized by FLAME students. Over 350 companies with suitable products for rural consumers but mainly focusing on urban segments are approached. Progressive and prosperous families from nearly 100 villages are specially invited in consultation with the local agricultural authorities to participate in the fair on a given day. In the past the fair has attracted approximately 2,400 participants, including farmers and their families as opinion-leaders.

Rural Marketing Fair's aim is three fold:

To assist selected villagers as rural consumers to get exposed to a range of products, which at present primarily focus on urban segments. To help participating as well as non-participating companies to conduct necessary market research, i.e. to identify the users and non users, undertake sales promotion and product testing activities, conduct focus interviews, display sample products, and most importantly understand and appreciate rural buyer behavior. To facilitate the management students of FLAME School of Business to have firsthand experience with the rural consumers of tomorrow.

Rural Entrepreneurship Appreciation Program (REAP)

Societies now recognize that entrepreneurs create and provide significantly more job opportunities than any other economic agency, more so in the rural areas. Besides, entrepreneurs have proven capability to bring about changes in the lifestyles of consumers by keeping, offering, and promoting products of interest. Entrepreneurs try to optimize competitive advantages by skillfully capitalizing available resources, people, and opportunities.

In Jalgaon and Buldhana during the Rural Marketing Fair, students have seen how the rural consumer is neglected although he is the future of Indian business houses. They also have an opportunity to see the other side, by working with or under a person who is immediately close to that consumer and serves him day and night. He is called a retailer, a shop-keeper or a dealer, but most importantly he is the rural entrepreneur with outstanding abilities to add value to the rural customers. He plays a very important role than merely selling products. Unfortunately, not withstanding their professionalism, very few companies realize, appreciate, or even recognize that role. Customers and entrepreneurs cannot remain isolated.

While in the rural shops, the students do every task the owner asks them to. That gains them his respect and social acceptability which is very essential for their learning. There are many such things that students learn, which they do while doing a study of these rural entrepreneurs and preparing case studies.

Discovering Realignment Initiatives of Visionary Enterprises and Rising Sectors (DRIVERS) Realizing that improved industry interface offers many benefits to the learner as well as knowledge institutions, a new course on DRIVERS has been introduced. It focuses on improving industry interface. This is a two trimester course, mandatory for all second year students. At the end of the course, students develops expertise in selected sectors and promising companies.

Our Faculty often collaborates well beyond the boundaries of their core research, embracing the value of multiple approaches to problem- solving, teaching and the creation of knowledge.

Renowned International and National Faculty

FLAME School of Business aims to create a well-rounded student with holistic development. We encourage and develop entrepreneurial and leadership abilities that help students look at context scientifically, take decisions more critically, and transcend mere knowledge into socially conscious decisions.

Holistic Development

We are an innovative and entrepreneurial school that has transformed management education with practice-oriented programs, where students aren’t passive passengers in the journey of knowledge, but also active drivers. FLAME School of Business encourages participative learning. Its faculty encourages students to question, to probe and to continuously challenge given norms and exceed them.

Participative Learning Training and developmental activities at FLAME School of Business introduces students to the industry, helping them understand and tackle problems of the real world in real time. Students are exposed to the industry through Rural Marketing Fairs at the district level. They also participate in a field-based Rural Entrepreneur Appreciation Program. Industry interface keeps the students attuned with the current business environment.

Interface with Industry

We equip students with conceptual and interpersonal skills that help them to respond effectively to the fast-changing world. Apart from nurturing curiosity and creativity within a student, we nurture standards for professional excellence, integrity, honesty and fairness.

Nurturing Minds

FLAME School of Business believes in contexual teaching with practical relevance. We have managed to develop a curriculum that will broaden students’ management and leadership skills. We have a strong commitment to diversity with an entrepreneurial mindset. We aim to create leaders, not just managers.

Contextual Teaching with Practical Relevance

Being rooted in liberal education, FLAME School of Business focuses on broadening students’ perspectives by offering students’ courses in a range of disciplines - from pure sciences to humanities and social sciences to performing arts. Our fundamental aim is to expose students to different analytical frameworks and enable them to think critically through issues. Most often, teachers rely on the Socratic dialectical method, which emphasizes learning through questions and discussions rather than lectures. Our students are also encouraged to take courses outside their business curriculum. Students are free to choose between courses offered by all four FLAME programs (FLAME School of Business, FLAME School of Communication, FLAME School of Liberal Education and FLAME School of Performing Arts). This freedom results in intellectual interactions between our postgraduate and undergraduate students. A postgraduate student of business, an undergraduate student of physics, a postgraduate student of journalism, and an undergraduate student of theatre could be sitting together in a philosophy class, interacting with each other.

A Mixed Bag

At FLAME School of Business, we understand curiosity and knowledge are a potent mix. But in today’s fast changing world, if students have to become tomorrow’s leaders, they need more. We seek diversity in both faculty resources and student profiles because we aim to create leaders who are unafraid in undertaking different roles rather than becoming a managerial rung in the corporate ladder.

We know one can touch the sky only if one starts at the roots. Which is why, FLAME School of Business is anchored in the concept of liberal education. Education that doesn’t just teach, it enlightens and opens the mind with a multitude of programs across areas in management sciences - such as marketing, finance, organizational behavior, business policy, strategy, and operations management, as well as areas in humanities, social sciences, creative arts and sports.

Mentorship, Counseling & Guidance

This is a unique concept that exemplifies the idea of the institute’s Guru-Shishya values. Students are provided guidance in understanding the contents of the various courses and in assessing their own skills, abilities and interests through a scientific process carried out with the help of appropriate aptitude and assessment tools. Career guidance through 1:1 sessions helps in understanding the nature and world of formal systems and institutions. Students gain perspectives and develop strategies towards the achievement of personal goals.

Development Activities Program

The Development Activities Program (DAP) has been designed with the principal objective of focusing on holistic intellectual development of the students. Development activities give the students an exposure to ground realities by bringing them into direct contact with the underprivileged, inculcating in them the values of empathy, humility and compassion. Development activities are mandatory and are scheduled for three hours each week. Students are encouraged to design their project proposals, strategies and implementation plans, which allow them to practice and experiment with the skills, ideas and concepts that they learn in their academic courses. They focus on taking up small projects connected to environment protection, resource conservation, income-generating enterprises and developing market models. The underlying purpose of these initiatives is to foster a spirit of social enterprise in the students and to encourage them to aim at maximization of sustainability.

Discover India Program

The Discover India Program is FLAME’s unique flagship program that combines research and creativity. After a trimester long research-intense module, during the break between two trimesters, students embark on a field trip of 8-12 days along with their faculty mentor. The students visit a place of their choice. During this field trip, they gather primary information about their place of visit. The students receive pre-field trip training through online interactions.

Students use all the resources they have gathered in the field trip to study their subject further in order to put together a comprehensive analytical report accompanied by other submissions, such as films, recordings, photos, authentic documents collected on site, diaries and sketches pertinent to their experience. The program culminates in a ceremony wherein student groups present their findings to an external jury in a public environment.

Elite Leadership Program

Elite Leadership Program is designed to complement classroom learning by providing students with an opportunity to participate in an intense leadership training program. This program offers intellectual stimulation, provides individualized support and exposes students to models of leadership and governance considered fundamental to any organization. FLAME Investment Lab The FLAME Investment Lab (FIL) aims to provide its student members skills to help them improve their understanding of the financial markets. Exploration and Dialogue SpaceExploration and Dialogue Space is an initiative that provides students with opportunities to introspect and self-identify areas for development. Students get advice on day-to-day dilemmas and are provided a forum to share their personal experiences. Exploration and Dialogue Space plays a supporting role by enhancing opportunities for learning and personal growth.

Reviewing investment-related classics, analyzing successful and unsuccessful company case studies, participating in investor conferences and competing in research challenges enables members to apply academic learning to the investment world.

Once equipped with these tools, student members channelize it to the stock market challenge. The challenge allows members to invest in the stock market from a corpus made available to them. Investment recommendation presentations are made to a committee who judges the rationale of the investment and decides whether the particular investment should be made. The profit generated from these transactions would be credited and transferred to the respective students who generate such profits. Loss, if any, will be borne by the lab and not by the members.

The FLAME Investment Lab is a platform to harness a student’s investment acumen, help them understand risk, and analyze the market as a whole before they become active participants.

I can easily say that the best times of my life were the two years that I spent in FLAME. Nowhere else would I have found such a perfect combination of work and play, the best of professors, a huge variety of subjects and a plethora of co-curricular activities to choose from! I will always remember the beauty of the campus, all my friends, and most importantly the faculty whose constant efforts pushed all of us to dream bigger, work harder and achieve more than our own expectation!Sonal Rajapurkar (Gold Medalist, Class of 2010)

FLAME for me was a platform to learn, an opportunity to explore, environment to question and a space to reflect. With a palette of these opportunities I discovered a new self in me backed by its reputed faculty and state-of- the- art infrastructure. Being at FLAME has taught me the importance of discipline and the beauty of freedom. It has shown me good times and bad, achievements and failures, friends and foes - but through it all, it has always taught me to do the right thing.Miten Vora (Silver Medalist, Class of 2009)

FLAME has given me two years full of learning, self-improvement, motivation, inspiration, bonding and friends for life. Be it ELITE or FLAME Rural Marketing Fair or a lecture taken by our prestigious faculty- each experience took me to higher level of growth and helped me become a better leader and a human being. FLAME has made me what I am today.Bani Anand (Gold Medalist, Class of 2010)

There was a time when education was to be re-defined. The answer to this was FLAME.In extremely simple terms, FLAME is family. It is like waking up one morning and realizing that everything around you is fresh, jubilant and green. From lake side classrooms, holistic development, state of the art infrastructure and customized courses, FLAME had so much to offer me. This was the valley where I learnt what it was to succeed with humility. It is true that professors became my friends. However, it is also true that they taught me that Corporate Social Responsibility is a right and not a choice.Today, when I look back at my Alma Mater, I look at these critical moments that have shaped me to a leader of tomorrow and feel extremely proud to be a part of this growth!Varun Prasad (Class of 2011)

The FLAME Alumni Network is an association that serves as a professional and personal networking channel for our alumni, thereby enabling them to stay in touch with each other and the institute. The key role of the FLAME Alumni Network is to provide a platform that will facilitate and enable former students to continue to be interested and involved in the life of the institute. It serves as a vehicle that will strive for continual improvement of alumni on an individual and collective basis through the process of networking and role modeling.

We’re a new institution and our alumni network is not the largest. But the earnest efforts involved are really large, as is the initiative.

We always ensure the alumni is always informed of and invited to upcoming graduations and other special events. A quarterly Alumni Newsletter helps alumni to stay abreast of the happenings at the institute they once called home.

Although geographical and work constraints don’t let all those who wish to attend come for the events, for some, we feel it is a step to ensure our alumni feels like a part of their alma mater. We also host an alumni lunch that’s attended by the alumni and their families as well as the upcoming graduates. This helps rekindle old connections and contacts but also establish new ones.

The FLAME School of Business is about the right brain, it’s about emotion, It’s about space, it’s about design. It’s not just about studying accountancy, strategy and going out into the world of business. It’s a different kind of school.”

Thank you for inviting me to your wonderful campus. It is my first visit here and I am certain it will not be my last.”

- Kishor ChaukarManaging DirectorTATA Industries

I was truly impressed with the approach FLAME is following for a holistic education in the field of management. I truly believe that a narrow ‘business’ oriented curriculum with emphasis on tools and techniques of improving performance is not adequate for building a competent manager and a durable business; and certainly not for improving the well being of the communities and the nation at large. Education which encourages independent thought, creativity, as well as offers experiences in a variety of vocations, skills and activities, contributes substantively to the making of a proficient manager and at times an entrepreneur. Besides this multi-faceted approach, the issue of corporate governance and ethics is also an extremely important aspect that needs to be incorporated while training candidates for successful careers in management.

I was encouraged to see that FLAME tries to incorporate all these aspects, including experiences in movie-making, fine arts, developmental work and adventure sports in their training programmes for holistic education; besides of course the fact that they have accomplished faculty from various professions, and of course a very pleasant campus ambience.”

The pioneering and rich variety of liberal courses at FLAME aim to develop the ability to ‘join the dots’, the essential quality of leaders. In any case, even to survive one needs this ability in loads in today’s hyper ‘cyber’ world.”
