The division into two books stems from the LXX and it is only since the 15 th century that they appear in Hebrew Bibles. In MT the customary colophon is to be found at the end of 2 Chronicles, showing that we have to do with a single book. This is corroborated by the fact that the book begins with 104 (4x26) words (1 Chron 1,1-16) and is concluded by 85 (5x17) words (2 Chron. 36,20-23), in line with the fact that a holy book usually begins and ends with a number of words which are a multiple of 17 or 26. See my article on the beginning and end of a holy book. The Book of Chronicles is a consistent numerical composition shaped and highlighted from beginning to end by the divine name numbers 17 and 26, because no less than 23567 of its 24057 words (98%) are governed by 17 and 26, the highest percentage in the Hebrew Bible. Moreover, I counted in smaller passages 14498 words (60%) which are additionally highlighted in this way. This in itself renders Chronicles into a high-grade numerical composition: in this respect the apogee of the Biblical books. It can be described as a through and through religious writing – more so than the Book of Kings – of which the raison d’être and purpose was to reassess and rewrite the Story of Ancient Israel from the creation of humankind to the downfall of Judah (Genesis-Kings), as an alternative, complementary account. From 1 Chronicles 10 onwards it is in fact an extensive elaboration of the brief interpretation in 2 King 17,1-19 of the reason behind the disaster that befell the people of God. Moreover, it was not conceived to be a totally independent writing, but to function as a theological preamble to Ezra-Nehemiah which deals with the restoration of the post-exilic community. Contrary to what we found in Ezra-Nehemiah, the Book of Fulfilment, in which 63% of its words are shaped and highlighted by the number of fulfilment, 11, in Chronicles all of its 24057 words (100%) constitute a multiple of 11: 2187x11. If this is not simply a matter of coincidence, which I doubt, it can be explained as an esoteric scribal technique used to link Chronicles to Ezra-Nehemiah (in this order!) as another Book of Fulfilment, in this case, the fulfilment of all God’s promises given to the patriarchs, David, and the house of Judah, and, more importantly, the implementation of the many threats of disaster in case of disobedience to the law of Moses, and particularly the fulfilment of Jeremiah’s prophecies. There is more evidence for the proposed relationship between Chronicles and Ezra-Nehemiah, namely the notable parallel between the final verses of 2 Chronicles, 36,20-23 (not only 36,22-23!), and the opening verses of Ezra 1,1-3. In my opinion, the generally accepted idea that 2 Chron 36,22-23 are repeated in Ezra 1,1-3 must be reversed, for 2 Chron 36,20-23 is a carefully designed rewrite of Ezra 1,1-3 by the Chronicler in order to link Chronicles to Ezra-Nehemiah, which he rightly regarded as its sequel in time order. This means that the function of the last verses of Chronicles is to prelude on the first verses of Ezra-Nehemiah. Given the supposition that Chronicles was composed at a later stage by a different author to precede Ezra-Nehemiah, the idea of a common authorship of the two books should definitively be abandoned. For the most recent discussion of their relationship, see Sara Japhet, “The Supposed Common Authorship of Chronicles and Ezra-Nehemiah Investigated Anew”, in: Vetus Testamentum IOSOT (2013), 36-76. This is not the place to discuss in more detail the problem of the relationship between the two books and their authors. See, e.g., the entry “Chronicles, Book of 1-2” in: The Anchor Bible Dictionary, I, (1992), 993. What has been said above sheds sufficient new light on their relationship. The Book of Chronicles was not conceived as a follow-up to Ezra-Nehemiah (as suggested by the order in the Hebrew Bible), but was written as an introduction to Ezrah-Nehemiah. The order Chronicles – Ezra-Nehemiah (as in LXX), reflects their chronological relationship in terms of content. In the Hebrew Bible, however, the reversed arrangement reflects the compositional time order, with the younger book Chronicles, as the apogee of the Biblical books to conclude the canon. In this way the two accounts of the Story of Ancient Israel form an inclusion: Genesis-Kings, a historiographic account of the rise and demise of the people of God at the beginning of the canon, and Chronicles, a pure religious account and evaluation of the Story, at the end.

Numerical Features of the Book of Chronicles A New Approach to its Structural Design

Please read the General Introduction

Like the Book of Ezra-Nehemiah, the Book of Chronicles is a structural unity consisting of two indivisible sections. The division into two books stems from the LXX and it is only since the 15th century that they appear in Hebrew Bibles.

Broad outline based on layout markers, content, and numerical features

The P and S have proved to be very helpful in delimiting the greater and smaller literary units. Generally speaking, the layout markers also appear to be reliable. I found only four literary units lacking a delimiting layout marker at their outer border, namely, 1 Chron. 14,1-17, 2 Chron. 2,16-17, 2 Chron. 6,1-13, and 2 Chron. 34,8-17, which are marked with []. On the whole it was relatively easy to distinguish the layout markers with a delimiting function from those which serve only to draw attention to what follows or to separate different episodes and verses, marked green in the table below). In terms of content and numerical considerations, Chronicles divides into seven main parts (as in many other books), with Solomon’s reign, Part IV: 2 Chron 1-9, in pride of place at the centre of the sevenfold structure (7=3+1+3). Compare the central position of Solomon’s Psalm (127) in the Psalms of Ascents!

The passages marked blue (98% of the text!) are in their entirety highlighted by the divine name numbers 17 and 26, but 1 Chronicles 9, stands out as not highlighted in this way. The outline below will enable us to explain this phenomenon and to discover the compositional process, which was in four stages:

1. The prehistory of Israel, 1 Chron 1-8, which the author finalized and sealed with 3434 (202x17) words. 2. The reign of David and Solomon, 1 Chron 10 – 2 Chron 9, which he sealed with 10140 (390x26) words. 3. The reign of all post-Davidic kings (2 Chron 9-36), which he sealed with 13312 (512x26) words. 4. Finally, a conclusion to the genealogies (1 Chronicles 9) to function as a bridge between the prehistory and the history of Israel under the reign of kings and to provide its first king with additional antecedents. This was done in such a way that the total number of words in the book came to a multiple of 11: 24057 (2187x11), in order to stamp it (like Ezra-Nehemiah) as a Book of Fulfilment.

Part I: 1 Chronicles 1-9 The prehistory of Israel presented as genealogies: P A. 1 Chr 1,1-4,23 From Adam to Israel and Judah: S 1428 (84x17) B. 1 Chr 4,24-5,26 Simeon and the transjordan tribes: P 527 (31x17) C. 1 Chr 5,27-6,66 The priestly descendants of Levi: S 752 3434 (202x17) D. 1 Chr 7,1-8,40 Other tribes and the family of Saul: P 727 E. 1 Chr 9,1-44 The returnees from Babylon: P 490

Part VI: 2 Chron 21,4-28,27 The reign of seven kings: Jehoram to Achaz: P 13312 (512x26) A. 2 Chr 21,4-26,2 Jehoram, Athaliah, Joash, Amaziah: P 1875 B. 2 Chr 26,3-28,27 The reign of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz: P 921

Part VII: 2 Chron 29-36 Judah’s final kings: Hezekiah to Zedekiah; the disaster.

A. 2 Chr 29,1-31,1 King Hezekiah the reformer: S 1004+ B. 2 Chr 31,2-32,33 King Hezekiah’s achievements: P 849/1853 (109x17) C. 2 Chr 33,1-25 The reign of Manasse and Amon: P 380 D. 2 Chr 34,1-36,4 King Josiah’s reforms and the law: P 1098 E. 2 Chr 36,5-23 From Jehoiakim to the disaster: Colophon 313.

Note how the central positioning of the reign of Solomon is underlined by being overlapped by the two accolades: Solomon belongs, on the one hand, to the reign of David over the undivided kingdom, and on the other, he is linked to the reign of the post-Davidic kings over Judah and Benjamin after the schism, for his rule contained the seeds of discontent (Solomon’s ‘heavy yoke’ - 2 Chron 10,4) that led ultimately to the secession of the northern tribes. For the comparble position of Deuteronomy in the Enneateuch, see my article “The Rise and Demise of the So-called Deuteronomistic History. A Plea for the Compositional Unity of Genesis-Kings”, in OTS 2016, 122-144.

Other views on the literary structure of Chronicles?

In his book The Literary Structure of the Old Testament. A commentary on Genesis-Malachi, Baker Academic, 1999, D.A. Dorsey concluded that “the literary structure of the Book of Chronicles has received little attention by scholars. Most commentators are content simply to list the book’s contents with little regard for the Chronicler’s literary efforts.” However, having perused the commentaries from the previous century I could lay my hands on, I have to qualify Dorsey’s statement. I agree with him that most older scholars did indeed simply follow the traditional chapter arrangement and divided the book into two, three, four, five, six, or more, main parts, e.g. Van Selms, Ackroyd, Myers, Braun, Dillard, and Japhet, but he overlooked an important book on the structure of Chronicles: S.J. DE VRIES’s study of its ‘individual units’ (1 and 2 Chronicles, in: The Forms of the Old Testament Literature, Vol. XI, 1989).

However, the problem is, unless scholars explicitly discuss the structural design of the book or provide at least an outline of its architecture, it remains difficult to tell whether they regarded their arrangement of the text as representing the book’s literary structure. This also applies to modern commentators.

Divine addresses, human speeches and prayers

I thank Klaas Eikelenboom for having spared me the laborious task of ferreting out the information dealing with these items. From the lists he compiled I will mention only what stands out as numerically significant. This must suffice to demonstrate the painstaking care with which the texts in question have been composed and imbued with number symbolism.

For this particular subject matter, see M.A. Thorntveit, The Significance of the Royal Speeches and Prayers for the Structure and Theology of the Chronicler, Dissertation Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, 1982.

David’s address to the people about the building of the temple (1 Chr 28,2-10): 170 (10x17) words.

Huram’s two messages to Solomon in response (2 Chr 2,10 and 11-15): 7 + 95 = 102 (6x17) words.

King Abijah’s address to Jeroboam and all Israel (2 Chr 13,5-12): 9 intro + 161 address = 170 words.

Sennachereb’s letter to cast contempt on the God of Israel (2 Chr 32,17): 17 words.

David’s major prayer regarding the building of the temple (1 Chr 17,16-27): 170 (10x17) words.

David’s confession that he has sinned by having conducted a census (1 Chr 21,17): 26 words.

All (five) prayers of David, including their introductions (1 Chr 14,10; 17,16-27; 21,8; 21,17; 29,10-19):

9+177+20+30+154 = 390 (15x26) words.

Three divine addresses to David, with intros (1 Chr 22,8-10; 28,3; 28,6-7): 62+13+29=104 (4x26) words.

Another three divine addresses to David (2 Chr 6,4-6; 6,8-9; 6,16): 52+31+21=104 (4x26) words.

Three responses of Micaiah to Ahab, with intros (2 Chr 18,14.16.18-22): 5+22+77=104 (4x26) words.

The priest Zechariah’s challenge to the people through God’s spirit (2 Chr 24,20): 17 words.

Having completed my quantitative structural analysis of all the books of the Hebrew Bible – a project I worked on since 2001 – I want to thank Pieter van der Lugt for his co-operation regarding the Book of Psalms, the Book of Job, and some prophetic books.

To Klaas Eikelenboom I am deeply indebted for the privilege to work with the program he designed for my research. Through the years, from 2010 onwards, he has become an enthusiastic co-worker, whose keen observations and constructive remarks enriched my work. I also thank him for having checked, and corrected, when necessary, my texts.

Without the love and comradeship of my wife Lenie, who has read and checked everything I have published the past sixty-five years, this major project would never have been carried out in time.

Finally I want to thank my daughter Trudie, who has not only designed my website but also uploaded and administered my files through the years as Webmaster.
