Noises from the Big End: With your help I have been able to compile a comprehensive list of Australian service providers, which will appear in this issue & on the website. Let me know if you have any names to add. I am still looking for volunteers to nominate themselves as Marque experts, don’t be afraid to send me your details. I take this opportunity to thank the previous committee for all their volunteer (behind the scenes) work in formulating the new constitution. In this issue you will also find a technical section and I urge all of you to send in any technical articles to our editor. The June crossword was appreciated as I have received several positive comments, so I ask you to continue to let me know what you want to see in your magazine, remember this is your Clatter and your club and it will only survive with your active participation. Last month, the lucky participant of the $50 trivia prize, was Alan Harper. Bearing in mind there were around 100 manufactures of motorcycles within the greater Birmingham, area. Following is a list of the more significant marques: Abingdon King Dick AKD; ABJ; Alldays; Ariel; Baker; BSA; Calthorpe; Carfield; Clyno; Connaught; Dunelt; Excelsior; Federal; Forward; Heldun; Henley; Hercules; Ivy; Ixion; James; JES; Levis; LGC; Lloyd; Metro; Mercury; New Comet; New Hudson; New Imperial; New Ryder; Norton; OK; Phillips; Quadrant; Radco; Raynal; Rockson; Rolfe; Scott; Sirrah; SOS; Stevens; SUN; Sunbeam; Trump; Velocette; Walco; Wolf. After the WW1 it was boom time for Birmingham motorcycle manufacturers but it was short lived with many makers only lasting a year as they competed in a very crowded market. The depression 30s saw many go out of business. Many depression survivors that turned to war work in 1939 never returned to motorcycle manufacture. In 1931 a significant development was the acquisition of AJS motorcycles by Colliers, the owners of Matchless motorcycles of London. In 1938 they acquired Sunbeam and the group reformed as AMC, (Associated Motorcycles Ltd.) Other acquisitions came, Francis Barnett in 1947, James in 1952, Norton in 1953 and Brockhouse Engineering in 1959. There was a

resurgence of interest in lightweight motorcycle, mopeds and scooters in the 50s in reaction to imported Vespa and Lambretta scooters. However, this was the first signs that British motorcycle manufacturer's management neither understood their market, or their customers. British products lacked Italian panache & style & the Italians easily captured the scooter market, it helped that their scooters were actually reliable too! In the 60s there were just 10 national motorcycle manufactures left & the Japanese gave them the final lesson on how to build products in keeping with peoples wants rather than boardroom politics. The British motorcycle industry failed to see the threat of the Mini Car & of the Japanese talent for continuous improvement. By the 70s the motorcycle was no longer just transport for work, it was a leisure tool. Sidecars had all but disappeared and the sports motorcycle was becoming the new cool motorcycle. The final nail in the coffin was the Triumph Co-operative at Meriden who must be this country’s greatest example of stupid and pointless unionism. They single handedly destroyed what was left of the industry with their militant, defiant attitude supported by government minister, Tony Benn. The co-operative also destroyed BSA causing the closure of the Small Heath plant & swallowing up large amounts of tax payers’ money. The co-operative finally went bankrupt in 1983, bringing about a shameful end to a once great industry. The assets were bought by Coventry businessman John Bloor &Triumph lives on today, sadly the more deserving BSA is just a memory. Today there is no manufacture of motorcycles within Birmingham. Let us all hope that what happened to the British motorcycle industry will remain a management and union lesson for future generations but unfortunately the old saying that history shows that we do not learn from history will probably be said again many times! The Putty Road gremlins strike again By David Lewis

A few years ago, I wrote a story for the Clatter on the history of my 1971 BSA Lightning. I bought it new. If you were to have asked me if I believed in the dark forces, supernatural happenings, gremlins etc, I would have laughed. Now I am not so sure. We have probably all experienced gremlins interfering with our enjoyment of our old motorcycles from t ime to t ime, but I now know just where the BSA gremlins lie in wait. They like to ply their trade on the Putty Road. One of the few t imes that my BSA let me down back in the day when it was my everyday transport was back in about 1972. I was on the Putty Road in the region of Colo Heights, cruising at about 75mph, when a loud clanging preceded coming to a fairly quick stop. It later turned out to be the left hand exhaust pushrod off its rocker, so to speak. The valve had apparently briefly seized. That was readily f ixed, and the bike did about 30,000 miles before the inevitable bigend bearing failure led to it being laid up for many years. Now fast forward the clock of t ime to 2016. The BSA has been restored and on historic registrat ion for a number of years and is st ill great fun to ride from t ime to t ime, but at a much reduced pace. In April of 2016, the heat of summer had at last gone and motorcycle riding was much more pleasant than over the preceding few months. One Friday, son Cameron (1982 900 Ducati) suggested we go for a ride up to the Blue Gums cafe, along the Putty Road. Can you see where this is heading? The BSA gremlins must have known we were out on the Putty Road that day, as the little buggers were pat iently lying in wait! We were enjoying the traffic free ride and were in the region of Colo Heights when the inevitable happening and they struck! The BSA came to a sudden stop. No warning, no misfire, nothing. It was as if the ignit ion had been turned off. But the bike would restart straight away, so we turned around and headed back towards Windsor. But it would stop suddenly again every few kms but restart readily. I had fitted a Boyer electronic ignit ion system, and this would seem to be the culprit, although how those gremlins could f it into that is beyond me. We arrived back at Colo Heights after a few more stops, where I sent Cameron home for the

trailer. I didn't fancy a semi behind me when I stopped in the middle of the road. The same bike had broken down twice on the same sect ion of the Putty Road, it is just that the breakdowns were 44 years apart! I subsequently f itted a new ignit ion unit and have had no further issues. Boyer themselves thought this was the problem. But I haven't ventured back up the Putty Road. I will leave those gremlins to amuse themselves at someone else's expense. __________________________________________

Bikes of the 1974 and 1975 Castrol six hour More in series by Mick Darcy 1973 had been fairly uneventful as far as disputes with the scrutineers however this all returned to 1974. The BMW of Brian Hill and Clive Knight R90/6 was escorted to the winners’ circle(second) at the end of the race, Hindle had been forced to use the non-fairing bike rather than the are 90 S, as fairings were not legal in 1974. However, the scrutineers found that this bike and the third placed BMW have non-standard fork internals giving them a substantial advantage. What actually happened was Kawasaki Z1 900s delivered a 1,2, 3 wins for Kawasaki. The Kawasaki mark VI of Greg Hansford and Warren Willing had lead the race initially, the scrutineers found that the bike didn’t have its key in the ignition and no further progress was made. At the flag Kawasaki 900 Lead the BMW, followed by another 900 which was later disqualified due to a larger fuel tank, leaving three Kawasaki Z900 to sit in the winner’s circle for the unlimited class. In the 500 mL class, The Yamaha Rd 350 had arrived, beat the second placed Kawasaki H1 500 and the CB 500 home by two laps. An Interesting side note is that Doug Chivas was placed fourth in the 500 CC class, after converting from driving cars, he was at the time quite famous for driving Chrysler E49 chargers against the likes of Peter Brock, and Allan Moffat. In the 250 class, the Yamaha RD 250 again excelled beating the GT 250 Suzuki and another RD 250 home. Tires had yet to make a real impact on the race, fuel stops had become far more efficient and a place to substantially improve or damage the contenders chances. So from an interesting new bikes perspective, I’ve really covered off the main contenders in the last years summary so I will move on to 1975 with some new bikes appearing , The Kawasaki Z 900 would continue to rule however it had some new interesting challengers Bikes Of the 1975 Castrol six hour. The race ended being another win for the Kawasaki Z1 900, followed home by Ken Blake on the BMW R90 Kawasaki took the nest next three places then a Laverda 1000, yet another Kawasaki, Honda cb750, Laverda 1000 and Neal and Doug Chivas on a Kawasaki 750.

The Z900 was the king of the road and you cannot write these articles but see how dominant that particular bike was over such a long period of time, no other bike would ever match such dominance. An interesting side note, is the Kawasaki Z900 starred in the Australian movie “Stone”, which highlighted a group of bikers riding these outstanding bikes, most of us have seen the movie but it’s well worth a second look, not just for the bikes of the time but it’s still a great story. Second place BMW R90S, was now legal. This was a substantial improvement on the bike that did so well last year, it now had twin discs at the front, weighing in at 215 kg without 898 mL boxer twin engine. This motor had a high compression ratio than the R90/6 at 9.5 to 1. Producing 67 hp and a top speed of 120 miles an hour.

1975 saw the Ducati 900 SS appear for the first time and while the Kawasaki finally won the race, the Ducati had truly won the hearts and minds of many. The race through wet with dry patches, truly tested the great skills of these fantastic riders. There was a dingdong one two battle with Z1, it looked like it was going to win before the 900ss finally gave up the ghost with just half an hour to run a six hour event. The 250 class was no more in 1975, however the 500 mL class was still there and it was a 1,2 victory for the Yamaha RD 350. Ducati 900ss Outgunned in a straight line by the super smooth twin overhead camshaft 900 of the Kawasaki, The Ducati made up all its ground on the corners through outstanding handling for the time. Ducati 900 SS was a product of the famous imola win, coming in two sizes the 750 SS and 900 SS, the 900 was really an 864cc, 90° V twin with Bevel driven camshafts, and desmo valves. In standard form they produce 64 hp had a weight of 215 kg for the top speed around 140 miles an hour. I can

I can

say that mine truly would go that fast, however it had a bad habit of blowing counter shaft seals. The seals were not found on the 1975 bike as they were the means by which the gear change was moved from the right hand side to the left on the later bikes. These bikes were kickstart only, however they had outstanding brembo twin discs upfront, and additional on the back, long wheel base, which gave them outstanding stable cornering ability. for the day they handled magnificently, the clutch however was something of a workout for your left hand, the kickstart could launch you if you didn’t use it carefully, and the riding position is something I can’t imagine doing for six hours today, though when I was 24, I used to go touring on it.

The 900 SS imported by Ron Angel, went on to win the Bathurst race weekend for the first time truly challenging the Z900s, however was later disqualified as it was found to be a special factory built bike. Looking at the spec sheet, you would have to think that this bike was probably going to be disqualified in the six hour had it not failed. As on paper you can’t see how it would’ve been as fast as it was.

Laverda 1000 3c was truly a long legged high-performance bike not really suited to the tight corners of Amaroo, however it took sixth and ninth place in the race in 1975. These bikes again had outstanding twin disk front end, they were very tall someone less you’re 6 foot plus the hard right, powered by a smooth three cylinder overhead camshaft engine, producing 85 hp, at top speed of 133 mph. They weighed in at 225 kg, 5 speed gear box & carried a relatively small fuel tank of 15.5 L.

Triumph Trident Peter Stevens organisation entered three triumph Tridents, with the best finishing 12 but importantly all finished. This is the three cylinder bike which Triumph should have launched in 1968 it truly would’ve been an outstanding thing in that time, weighing in at 228 kg with 68 hp, the top speed of 109mph. With a single disc break front end, it was an exceptionally stable handling bike. However, by 19 trim 75 it could no longer compete with the hard charging Japanese and the great handling Italians.

Occasional Comments By Alan Harper How good is the Clatter of late? Some new ideas on format and layout and a great deal more input from more members providing excellent and interesting articles has resulted in an invigorated Clatter. I am sure previous editors would be jealous at the number and quality of the articles we have seen of late. Please keep your articles coming, the more you put in, the less of my ramblings are needed. I recently had a call from Graham Goodwin referring me to a producer wanting bikes for a photo shoot at Newtown for an advert. Apparently, they wanted bikes that were not pristine and looked like they were being restored, so my well used bikes were what was needed, rather than pristine examples. A few phone calls and I was asked to bring my 1950 Triumph and Kawasaki 900, but not to wash them. It was an interesting experience, getting the bikes to Newtown before the 6am start and finding parking for the car and trailer. Only the Triumph was used in the shoot with its tank removed to make it look as if it was being worked on by a bunch of old codgers. Seeing the whole process gave an insight into how much we see on TV is carefully staged and by 8am it was all over and it was time to pack up and head home. I believe it will be in a series of ads to encourage older Australians to get out there and do things with their friends. I had to renew car insurance on my old Falcon, the renewal was for 3rd party property and came to $606 as I have 19 year old Alex listed as a driver, but I then went to the company's website and filled in their form for a comprehensive policy with the same drivers and surprising the cost for more cover was reduced massively to around $375. I couldn't believe this and called them to see if it was correct, we went through the whole quote process and indeed it was correct and after talking to them they reduced it further to $359. I couldn't get my credit card out quick enough to pay. Run to Stone Café 5/4/18, we had a small group head out in fine weather (that seems to be all we can get in Sydney of late) for a shortish run through the hills

district finishing at the Stone Café for morning tea and a chat. It was good to see Phil Leach back on his BMW along with John Key on a Ducati, Chris O'Carroll on his BMW, Peter Wolfendon an Velo and me on a Kawasaki. It’s a pity we don't get more for these very social events, most of us headed back via Wilberforce, the Terrace and North Richmond as to avoid the traffic around Windsor. In the shed I have a Tiger 100 part built and I ordered a set of rims and spokes from Hagon's in England, this is never a cheap exercise but I thought I better get these delivered before the GST starts to be applied on overseas purchases less than $1000, I believe this will start 1st July 2018. Even with the hefty 85 UK pounds postage the rims and spokes are still cheaper than you could pick them up locally and they are drilled to suit the hubs. Surprisingly they said there was a 3 week backlog of orders, but they arrived within a couple of days of me paying for them, now to get the hubs ready and put them all together. With Winter now upon us the 2nd June run to Colo was held in cool conditions with rain threatening all day, but never actually delivering. It kept the numbers down to just 3 of us taking on the conditions, Kevin Holmes (Norton Commando), Chris O’Carroll (BMW R100S) and myself (Kawasaki Z1A) did the fairly brisk ride up through the hills and over the Sackville ferry and on up to Colo Heights, before turning back for morning coffee at Colo. It was a quite pleasant ride with very little traffic and warm enough on the bike once you rugged up for the ride. It was good to see Kevin Holmes on a ride again and at the stop, he was mentioning that a track at Marulan is approaching completion, this has been a "training" track in the past but has been recently upgraded to a level where it could be used for competition, this will be great when that happens as we are so limited in road race facilities in NSW. ____________________________________________

Technical Talk Dave’s Diary No. 1

(How to convert a Lucas 4657-2MC tail light part 1.)

When fitting out a 1950 AJS for registration, I noticed that there was no stop light fitted in the tail light assembly.

The solution was to discard the single lamp holder and replace it with two separate holders (see images). The one lamp wired up as before (to the tail light switch) and the other wired to a universal stop switch. The stop switch can be purchased from any good bike shop or through the UK owner’s club (Pt. No. 900506). By making up a small bracket, the switch can be anchored to the bolt securing the rear brake plate. The spring end is then clamped to the brake rod.

A bright idea is to purchase from Jaycar a 3 amp diode (Pt. No. 1N5404). These are less than $1ea and solder this in place between the two positive terminals of the lamp (see wiring diag.). In this way both bulbs will glow when the brake pedal is pressed and both windows in the tail light will be illuminated. As a safety measure, if one bulb blows then the other will still work. This will not interfere with the operation of the parking /Tail light. However, when the parking /Tail light is ON, only one globe will work for the stop light. The diode is quite small and easily concealed inside the tail light assembly.

This system will work with both 6 and 12 volt batteries, but the polarity is important, if your system is positive earth then the connections at A & B (or DA & DB) will need to be reversed. As a rule, the current flows from positive to negative (forget about electron flow). For identification, the Negative side of the diode has a white band around it.

So, now the conversion is effected, the brake light is twice a bright as normal and a lot easier to see. This conversion suits Lucas type 4657-2MC tail lights which were fitted as original equipment to a variety of post war Classic bikes.

Debenham Winter Tour

Hi to everyone, I just got home from the Debenham Winter Tour and thought now or never it's the time to write a report on the get together of motorcyclist in the southern highlands town of Moss Vale and its surrounds. The event started at 8.30 AM Saturday morning with the briefing of the marshals of their responsibilities etc. and departed, at 9.00 AM the tourists started the course which meandered through the minor roads to the morning tea stop some 38 Kms later where the hot tea, coffee was eagerly consumed with cake, fruit and biscuits. The weather definitely windy and crisp but enjoyable if you’re riding a favoured motorcycle, after the break the marshals set of to man their posts for next trek of 69 Ks around the highlands near Robertson back to the meeting place of Fitzroy Falls Reservoir where a BBQ lunch had been prepared by some our volunteers, the weather had warmed marginally for this section. After the group had finished the presented sustenance and looked and admired the assembled mass of vintage, veteran and classic cycles & the gathering of 5 outfits, the marshals again set for the last of section of the tour back to Moss Vale Caravan Park with the tourists following full bellied and smiling. The return journey of 42 Ks taking in more of the minor & under used back roads of the area. The Saturday night presentation and dinner went off a treat with tongues getting more exercise. Sunday dawned blue skies and considerably colder, oh yeah it rained Saturday night and at 10.00 AM a group of 25 or so keen and colder riders set off on another part of the tour of 55 Ks on another ride taking in a picture perfect views of the surrounds. There are number who I would like to thank for their help Joy, Mick, Simone, Col, Merle, Ross [Key Batteries] particularly Wayne for organizing the food, cooks route etc. the diligent marshals, back up trailer drivers and all those helping in any way, a big thank to all. According to the participants one of the of the best rallies/tours they've attended in a long time. Some of the statistics 77 entrants of which 5 were outfits, 16 x pre-1940’s, 14 x 40's & 50's models. All the best in riding Brian Martin. Gallery pictures thanks to Lester Hamilton. Dam Ride Report Hi to all Cemcc members guests, and those who have already read some of the writings on the Dam Wednesday rides. Since me last putting fingers to key board we have had a number of very successful rides taking in some of the southern highlands, and south west of Sydney water area attractions. Two rides ago we ventured to Berrima on the southern highlands to a site of world war 1 significance, a German intern camp where a number of people were detained, because it was thought they could have been a danger to the British empire, funnily enough they could come and go through the day but had to return for the evening detainment. At this area they built quite an area for living, entertainment and a bridge over the. Wingeecarribee river, this area is worth a visit. At this ride we ride we had turn up of 34 people 29 bikes 8 of which were on club plates and 3 in a car. Pictures in May clatter. Now onto our last run, this ride was to Burragorang lookout, a magnificent day for a ride on a motorcycle cool air sun shining great company, we rode the Picton road, through Douglas park, Picton along to Oakdale with a bit of detour but on to the lookout where we were met by Rahna Elliot who had been volunteered to supply to Hot water for the Tea and coffee, a big thank you. Well on arrival the cooking started and cooks Allan and Lee cooked up the sausages to perfection and as the usual there were no leftovers. Looking around at the different groups of conversationalists, I have notice the participants seem to rotate to different groups, keeping different perspectives of curing the worlds woes as well as the health of the older generation. Oh, at this ride we had 35 people, 32 bikes 11 of these on club plates, and 3 in 2 cars, another successful ride. Well to sum up this this what I thought would be a short story we are looking forward to the next Dam Wednesday 20th June ride to a destination undecided at this point of time, but all are welcome members, guests, neighbours, enemies, and even those from Sydney branch, we are one club after all. All the best in riding Brian, contact number 0408 835 139.
