感謝大家過去18個月對船廠工程的忍耐和包容。我們有信心,續租很快便會得到正式的確認。

我們在5月底第二次到訪建造委員會船的內地造船廠EAC,知悉工程進展良好。船體和甲板已經成型,將於7月合併。而所有配件和升級導航系統正進行採購,希望年底可以交付予本會。

今年的24小時慈善小船賽(24 Hour Charity Dinghy Race)將於11月5至6日舉行。本會的榮譽司庫 Eric Stark 正着手以嶄新形式籌備活動。我期待在這個愉快的活動中跟大家再聚。因為名額需求甚殷,各位要盡快組織帆船隊伍了。

我們很榮幸獲日本文部省邀請,在8月參加International Friendship All Japan Junior Yacht Club Regatta 2016。三位白沙灣遊艇會的Optimist級別隊員可以透過這次賽事汲取國際賽經驗。賽事的地點將會是2020年奧運會的比賽場地。

Thank you for your patience and tolerance regarding the inconvenience caused by the congestion in the boatyard for the last eighteen months. We are confident that we will soon receive official confirmation of our lease renewal.

During our second visit to EAC at the end of May to our club boat builder in China confirmed that good progress is being made. The hull and deck have been moulded and will be put together in July, while all the accessories and navigation upgrades are being procured to achieve a delivery to the Club at year’s end.

We will be hosting the 24 Hour Charity Dinghy Race this year on the 5 – 6 of November. Our Honorary Treasurer, Eric Stark, is now taking the lead to organise the event under a revitalised format. I look forward to seeing all of you again to witness the 14th running of this event and suggest that you should think about forming your team early in order to reserve a dinghy for the race.

I am also proud to announce that we have been invited by the Japanese Ministry of Tourism, Education, Sports and Culture to join the International Friendship All Japan Junior Yacht Club Regatta, 2016 this coming August. Three HHYC Optimist sailors will benefit from this regatta, and gain overseas competition experience where the sailing area will be the venue for the 2020 Olympic Games.

With both the Quest Yachting Typhoon Series and the UK Sailmaker Saturday Summer Series both in full swing, summer is finally here. For those of you spending the next couple of months in Hong Kong, we have plenty to keep you occupied. Our children’s summer programme is underway, including our popular Adventure Water Sports Week, which is a fun five-day programme of kayaking, beach games, dinghy sailing and boat rides. Courses run from Friday 27 June – 19 August and are suitable for ages 6 – 14 years. For bookings please email: [email protected] as we still have spaces available. We also have SUP’s, Kayaks and Dinghies for rental too, so why not spend a few hours out on the water having fun with the family. We are now stocking excellent sunscreen from the Cancer Council Australia, so don’t forget to slip slop slap!

For the past few weeks, we have kept you entertained on Friday nights with an array of themed buffets, live music and wine tasting. Expect to see some new concepts as we are working on our ‘Sizzling Summer’ ideas, so watch this space and a bingo revival once everyone is back in September. Preparations for the annual 24 Hour Charity Dinghy Race are underway, with the event taking place on 5 & 6 November. We still have sponsorship opportunities available and are always looking to sign up volunteers, either assisting with the organising or helping on the weekend itself. If you are involved in a club, school or organisation that thinks they would like to enter a team, get in touch. It also offers a chance for school Cass points and corporates to fulfil their own CSR whilst engaging in team building activities; enter a team and getting full training from our sailing centre. Get out the office and do something for charity! Happy Holidays and safe travels wherever you spend your summer!

Merlot 60%, Corvina Veronese 40%

Ruby red in colour. The notes of red fruit, in particular cherries and plums, are pristine and immediately pleasing to the palate, slowly giving way to the aroma of spices and herbs. Merlot blended with the vivacity of Corvina creates a wine with substantial body, that is mature and mouth-filling , where Corvina confers an unexpected vitality.

Pairs well with boiled and roasted meats, eggs with black truffles, beef tartar and soft cheeses.

Garganega 80%, Chardonnay 20%

Fairly intense straw yellow colour. Striking aroma such as wild flowers, white peaches, and vibrant, vegetal notes. Fresh and simple with a supple body, dry and smoothly rounded on the palate.

Fine with aperitifs, such as vegetable and fish hors d’oeuvres. Also good with seafood and vegetable risottos.

Get on board with SeafarersFaintly fruity on the nose, this light amber beer sails a steady course through well-developed malt character towards a satisfying, hoppy finish. The Fales yeast brings out soft fruit flavours, while the hops impart a zesty, spicy quality to the brew.

Who’s who around the Club?

What Ben does at the ClubI am the maintenance supervisor at HHYC and I’m a trained professional electrical engineer. These days I have become a Jack of all trades at the Club. I generally take charge and put all the preventive maintenance programmes into action and repair work planned by the Club’s Maintenance Manager. I also look after all the major equipment in the boatyard, Sail Training Centre and restaurant facilities—helping keep the Club in good working order. My team works hard behind the scenes in all of HHYC's major events from the 24 Hour Dinghy Race and the Mirs Bay pursuit to every F&B event by setting up the lighting, electrical power points and any other equipment to help the events run smoothly.

What he loves most about the ClubI joined Hebe Haven in September 1999 and I have always loved the friendly atmosphere. Most of the members are polite and friendly towards all the employees and everyone is part of the HHYC family. I feel at home working at HHYC and enjoy the benefits and job stability.

My life outside the ClubMy work doesn’t stop at 6pm when I get off work. As a single parent of eight children, my after-work time is spent taking care of my two teenage kids at home. I spend most of my free time playing with my grandchildren who also live in Sai Kung and enjoy my long holidays at my farm in the Philippines—planting fruit trees and raising livestock.

遊艇會內的職責 我是白沙灣遊艇會的維修部主管,也是一個專業機電工程師。這些日子以來,我已成為了本會的萬事通。我通常負責和進行所有預防性的保養工作,並按維修部經理的計劃進行維修工作。我也會照料船廠、航海訓練中心和餐廳的主要設施,協助遊艇會保持良好運作。我的團隊在白沙灣遊艇會所有重要活動的幕後努力工作,包括24小時慈善小船賽、大鵬灣追逐賽,以及在餐飲部的活動中設置照明設施、電源和其他設備,務求令活動順利進行。

最愛遊艇會乲之處我在1999年9月加入白沙灣遊艇會,我一直都喜愛這裏友善的氣氛。大部份會員對員工都很有禮貌和友善,大家都是白沙灣遊艇會的一分子。在白沙灣遊艇會工作就像回家一樣,也很享受這裏的待遇和穩定的工作。

遊艇會外生活我在下午6時下班,但工作仍未結束。作為有八個孩子的單親爸爸,我的工餘時間就是在家裏照顧兩個十幾歲的孩子。在空閒的時間,我會跟同樣住在西貢的孫兒玩耍,有長假期的時候,我會前往我在菲律賓的農場度假,種植果樹和飼養家畜。

By the time you receive this new issue of Hebe Jebes, some of you will already be away sailing or having some well-deserved holidays. It has been a great year for Alfred with very encouraging results in most of the regattas and reaching the podium in the latest Hebe Slam Regatta. In this issue of the Dragons, we will be covering the latest Hebe Regatta and feedback from the 2016 Asians in Sri Lanka and IODA Asian & Oceanian Optimist Championship 2016.

A fantastic turnout at the second HKODA Ranking Regatta in the now famous Tai Mei Tuk Centre. 65 Optimists gathered in this beautiful area including some teams from China. Conditions were not the best due to a lack of wind—a serious advantage for the lighter sailors. Strong results from our Hebe Dragons with an 8th position for Pei Yip (one of his best rankings if not the best), 11th for Gabriel Ma (his best-ever ranking), 14th Pasu Chu, 15th Nathan Turner (one of his best rankings too), 17th Jasmine Scholer, 20th Emily Keg, 21st Nicolle Scholer, 28th Timothee Bourrut Lacouture, 29th Bincker Uiterwaal, 32nd Sean Liu, 44th Carman Pascual, 48th Keenan Mills (sadly with an OCS), 50th Lumiere Ng (who missed the whole first day due to exams) and 61st Gabriella Pascual. Thanks to Tai Mei Tuk Centre for the brilliant organisation and we already look forward to coming again next year.

Tai Mei Tuk Team Racing National 2016For the first time ever, HKODA organised a team racing event in order to prepare our selected teams, who are participating in the IODA events, to better understand the rules. Eight teams entered the event with sailors from HKSS, RHKYC and HHYC. After a fierce battle between the best Hong Kong sailors, our Dragons managed to reach the final and ended second just behind RHKYC.

在大尾督水上活動中心舉行的第二個香港OP級帆船協會排名賽吸引了大批參賽者。65 艘 Optimists 級別帆船,包括來自中國的選手,齊集在這個美麗的場地。現場情況不是太好,因為沒有風,這對較輕的選手來說非常不利。Hebe Dragons 隊員的成績不俗,Pei Yip(是他其中一個最好的排名)得第 8 名, Gabriel Ma 第11名(他的最佳排名)、Pasu Chu 第 14 位、 Nathan Turner(也是他最佳排名之)第 15 名、Jasmine Scholer 第 17 名、Emily Keg 第 20 名、Nicolle Scholer第 21 名、Timothee Bourrut Lacouture 第 28 名、Bincker Uiterwaal 第 29 名、Sean Liu 第 32 名、Carman Pascual 第44 名、Keenan Mills(可惜有一個OCS)第 48 名、Lumiere Ng (他因為要考試錯過了第一天賽事)第50名和Gabriel la Pascual 第 61 名。感謝大尾督水上活動中舉辦了這個很棒的比賽,我們期待明年再來參賽。

大尾督隊際帆船賽 2016

香港OP級帆船協會首次舉辦隊際帆船賽,讓獲選參加國際OP級帆船協會賽事的隊伍更加熟悉賽事規例,為參賽做好準備。這次賽事總共有8支隊伍參加,包括香港航海學校、香港遊艇會和白沙灣遊艇會等。這批本港最優秀的船員經過激烈爭逐之後,Dragons隊伍打入決賽,最後僅敗給香港遊艇會得亞軍。

The day before the event saw the first T3 hoisted in Hong Kong quite early in the year, which could have led to the cancellation of the race. Luckily enough, the signal was cancelled in time and preparation could get underway. There was a lot of excitement amongst the sailors as the wind was blowing East / North East ranging from 10 to 15 knots or more with some nice swell. After a quick skipper briefing, all of the 60+ boats from all categories left Hebe to Port Shelter. They were preceded by the race committee comprised of Elberti Uiterwaal (CRO) and a special guest from Oman, the PRO Marina Psychogyiou, to lead the event over the weekend. The first warning signal was scheduled at 12.00 leaving enough time for all the boats to arrive on the course. The aim of the day was to do three to four races depending on the weather conditions as heavy showers were forecasted towards the end of the day.

The first three races showed some great sailing with clear starts, clear courses, great swells and gusts—an advantage for some of the heavier sailors and tougher for some beginners with a few nosedives and capsizes. Sadly, after race three, the RO decided to go back to shore as a storm was coming—which proved to be right, as not more than five minutes after arriving it started to rain heavily nonstop till the evening. Once again, we can only approve the decision of having ‘safety’ first over racing. On Sunday, the race committee was enlarged with a dream team of ladies (and one boy) including Lesley Anderson on the Committee

Boat, Bonnie Cheng, Inge Strompf Jepsen, Joe Law, Agnes Caer, Shona Mihan and Eliza Yeung on the finish boat. With this leading team, it could only ensure the best regatta in the best conditions. Of course, a race without a Race Director is not a regatta. Congratulations to Aileen Lo for her first Hebe Regatta since joining the Club a few months ago.

The Dragons were well represented with a near full team for the Optimists. Only Laura Quinlivan decided to join the Pico fleet while Iain Duncan (Laser) had to stay on Alfy’s boat due to a hand injury. He was represented by Antonio. The rest of the team, Emily, Pei and Bincker were participating in the 2016 Asian and Oceanian Championship in Sri Lanka. The first race of the day showed some strong effort from Nicole whose target was to finish in the lead and if possible, first. It was a close fight between her and Faolan Whyte (J-Asia) and Duncan Gregor (RHKYC). She actually managed to twice reach the pole position and three times second position over the weekend leading her to her best-ever ranking in second position overall (tied with Faolan with both 8 points). The other Dragons sailed extremely well with a great achievement from Pasu who finished 9th; Jasmine, who missed her first race and received a black flag in the 5th one, ended 12th. Timothee who managed to be in the top 10 for most of the races leading to his best ranking of 15th. It was also a best ranking for Carmen who finished 17th (Carmen has been in the top 20 for all six races).Lumiere who finished 20th (despite two DNF).

Sadly, this regatta was not an HKODA ranking regatta due to the clash with the Asians in Sri Lanka where 10 of the best Hong Kong sailors are competing amongst 15 other nations. It was also nice to see so many volunteers on the water to help out setting the course, ensuring safety and so on.

賽事舉行前一天,天文台發出了本港今年第一個三號強風信號,很罕有地這麼早刮颱風,而這可能會導致賽事被取消。幸好,風球及時除下,準備工作可以如常進行。由於當日吹起10至15節的東至東北風,加上有不錯的湧浪,船員都感到很興奮。在進行簡短的賽前簡介之後,所有組別總共超過60艘船離開白沙灣前往牛尾海。賽事委員會委員負責領導這個周末的賽事,他們包括 Elberti Uiterwaal(CRO)和阿曼來的特別嘉賓 Marina Psychogyiou PRO。第一個警告信號在中午12點正發出,提供了足夠時間讓船隊抵達賽道。由於天文台預測當天稍後時間會有幾陣驟雨,如果天氣情況許可,這天可以舉行 3至4場賽事。

首三場賽事進展不俗,起步順利、賽道無阻,還有很不錯的湧浪和陣風,這對較重的船員來說有利,但對一些新手來說就比較困難,有些甚至翻了船。可惜的是,由於風暴即將來臨,賽事總監在第3場賽事後把所有船員召回岸上,而後來證實這是對的,因為5分鐘之後下起大雨來,雨勢持續到晚上。再一次,我們只好承認「安全第一」較比賽更重要。在星期日,賽事委員會加入了更多成員,成為女士夢幻組合,包括在委員會船上的Lesley Anderson、Bonnie Cheng、Inge Strompf Jepsen、Joe Law、Agnes Caer、Shona Mihan 和終點船上的 Eliza Yeung。這個組合確保了我們的賽事能在最好的情況和條件下舉行。當然,總指揮是賽事的靈魂,在此恭喜 Aileen Loo 加入白沙灣遊艇會數月以來,成功舉辦的第一個 白沙灣帆船賽。

在當天的第一場賽事,Nicole非常努力,她的目標是保持在領先位置,甚至勝出賽事。她和 Faolan Whyte(J-Asia)及Duncan Gregor(香港遊艇會)叮噹馬頭。她在周末成功得到兩個第1名和三個第2名,是她歷來最好的成績,在總成績得到亞軍(與Faolan同得8分)。其他Dragons隊員表現也非常出色,Pasu 第 9 名,錯過了第一場賽事並在第 5 場賽事被出示黑旗的 Jasmine 得第 12 名,而 Timothee 在大部份賽事中保持頭十位,總成績得第 15 名。Carmen(她在六場賽事中保持頭二十位)得到第17名,而 Lumiere 得到第20名(雖然有兩次未能完成賽事),是他們歷來的最好成績。

可惜的是,這次帆船賽不是香港OP級帆船協會(HKODA)的排名賽,因為本港頭十名選手當時正身在斯里蘭卡參加亞洲賽,與其他15個國家和地區的選手競逐。當天也很高興看到很多義工來協助設置賽道和安全措施等事項。

在5月28日至6月5日,我們三位Hebe Dragons的隊員:Pei Yip (HKG305)、Emily Keg(HKG1003)和 Bincker(HKG388)通過HKODA的排名賽,被獲選代表香港出席 2016 IODA Asian & Oceanian Optimist Championship。這次比賽一共16個國家參加,除了我們亞洲國家外,還有美國,澳洲,紐西蘭和土耳其,比賽在斯里蘭卡舉行,我們從國際機場再乘7小時的旅遊巴前往西北部的亭可馬里(Trincomalee),因為我們所乘的航班需要在印度轉機,由香港到目的地足足用了20多個小時。

我們住的酒店正位於比賽地點亭可馬里,那裡環境很漂亮,鄰近一個水清沙幼的沙灘。風很大,大部份時間維持20至30節風,比我們香港颱風時還要大,對於我們年紀小小的隊員是一個非常大的挑戰。

比賽分六天進行,首兩天是分組賽,由於風很大,隊員們都不習慣,有些隊員更翻船,分組賽後我們的三位 Dragons 被派入 Silver Fleet。第三天是團隊賽,Pei 是香港團隊中唯一一位 Dragons。第四天是休息日,教練 Christos 不建議安排戶外活動,反而應利用這天好好休息,準備最後兩場比賽。

第一次作為IODA比賽香港隊領隊對我來說,這的確是很大的挑戰,帶着10個隊員經過長途的旅程,我們有幾個隊員身體不適,在比賽中途,更有與我們同住一間酒店的外國選手生病了而要被隔離,以免我們的隊員被感染,幸好最後我們所有隊員都得以順利完成比賽。

From the 28 May to 5 June, three Hebe Dragons, Pei Yip, Emily Keg and Bincker Uiterwaal qualified in the HKODA ranking race and were selected to represent Hong Kong at the IODA Asian & Oceanian Optimist Championship 2016 in Sri Lanka. A total of 16 countries participated in this race and, along with many Asian countries; there were sailors from the USA, Australia, New Zealand and Turkey. We took a seven-hour coach bus from Colombo International Airport to Trincomalee in the northwest. Since we had stopped over in India, it took more than 20 hours to reach our destination from Hong Kong. Our hotel was located in Trincomalee—the race venue—with beautiful scenery and a sandy beach—it was very picturesque. The wind however, was very strong, mostly 20 – 30 knots, which is stronger than a typhoon hitting Hong Kong. The strong winds were the biggest challenge for our young sailors.

There were six racing days. The first two days were heat races and our sailors struggled to get used to the strong winds with some of them capsizing. After the heats, our three Dragons were assigned to the Silver Fleet. The third day was team racing and Pei was the only Dragon in the Hong Kong Team Race. The fourth day was a rest day and Coach Christos suggested not arranging any outdoor activities so that the sailors could rest and prepare for the final two days of racing. As it was my first time as the Hong Kong Team Leader of the IODA race, it was a real challenge for me. I had to lead 10 sailors on a long journey with some of them not feeling well and some sailors getting ill. In order to prevent infection, we maintained quarantine and luckily, all our sailors were able to finish the race successfully.

About 18 months ago at a Sailing Committee meeting, Geoff Tayler put forward a proposal to hold a ‘slow boats’ regatta—and the idea was met with approval. The primary idea arose from the frustrations of Geoff and other sailors receiving a DNF (did not finish) in our regular Typhoon and Saturday Series due to the 30-minute ‘cut-off’ edict in the HHYC standard sailing instructions. Over the subsequent six months, the idea was discussed and slowly developed—although it was a struggle to find a suitable replacement for the ‘slow boats’ moniker—a title less pejorative would be required for marketing the event!

In August last year, following the sad passing of former Commodore Philip Boothroyd, the merger of the ‘slow boats’ racing idea and the need for a fitting tribute to a well-loved guy who contributed so much to the development of HHYC, came clearly into view. At a memorial evening for Phil on 21 August 2015, it was a recurring theme that Phil had regularly entered his yacht, Countess of Cathay, in the annual Around the Island Race, but frequently failed to finish due to the cut-off regulation—it was an obvious fit!

At the next Sailing Committee, the ‘Countess Cup’ gained impetus; subject to the approval of Philip’s ‘children’, Robyn and Mark, to both the tribute and the proposed event. Such approval was wholeheartedly given together with a commitment to provide a trophy to be awarded to the winner of the event. What arose

was the problem of how to find a date to hold the races and to work out the event details, including the thorny issue of the HKPN handicap cap for entrants. Whichever criteria was decided would not be appreciated by those boats/skippers that fell below the cutline but wanted to sail in memory of Philip.

The HKPN benchmark was quickly set at 1100, as it was deemed that two boats skippered by two Sail Committee members—Windseeker and Ichiban—were ‘too fast’ (not a description normally applied) to enter. This cut off was upped to 1150 in a final review of the HKPN list during the drafting of the notice of race. The format of the event—a geometric course followed by an islands course—was part of the original proposal by Geoff.

Enough of the history, now to the Event, itself, held on Sunday, 22 May, 2016. The aforementioned skippers of Windseeker and Ichiban took on the RO and ARO roles for the day and headed out early with Mikey, Raymond the photographer; and Karina and Carol as ‘timekeepers and scribes’ to set up for the 11.30 start. The wind looked more promising than the five to six knots previously advertised and even got up to 11 knots (ideal for most of the boats racing) about 30 minutes prior to the start. Six boats had pre-entered, but—as usual—we hoped for a few more to arrive on the water; particularly given the beautiful clear day. So, it was very pleasing to see Jacqueline Boo and Guerreiro join the fray.

Unfortunately, by the time the designated start time arrived, the wind had dropped to around three knots. This meant that the race course, which was set up for six knots, would likely prove to be too long for the mandated two circuits. So it proved to be, requiring an early decision to shorten the course to one round, in order not to jeopardise the planned second race. The eight boats started off at a fair speed, but at varying times in the upwind leg suffered from dropping winds. Guerreiro was rewarded for her decision to join the fleet, with a line honours, finishing 10 minutes ahead of Modesty Blaise; followed by Golden Delight and Jacqueline Boo in a tight race for the line. Then Triton and Lazy Piggy engaged in a finishing duel. It also looked like Paloma and Countess of Cathay would cross the line together, however about 50 metres from the finish the wind changed dramatically and Countess suffered the strange sight of having her spinnaker fully backed against the mast. It then took a further seven minutes for Countess to earn the horn from the race officer. After a handicap adjustment, Guerreiro comfortably took first place, to add to her line honours, with Lazy Piggy and Modesty Blaise in second and third, respectively.

For the second race, the debate on the committee boat was whether to send out the yachts to get stuck in the usual holes in the shadows of either Table or Trio—Table won that battle when Course 100 was chosen. At the start, six of the eight boats were keenly at the line a full 10 seconds before the gun and with five OCS at the start, the RO signalled a general recall (a rare

event in HHYC racing). “It was the tide,” was the claim afterwards—that is doubtful! For the restart the boats were more cautious and kept clear of the line, so the race commenced in solid, if unspectacular winds.

The progress to Table Island was fairly fast with two boats—Triton and Guerreiro—tacking early and choosing the right-hand route closer to the coast, with the others remaining offshore on starboard. It appeared that the main fleet had the upper hand, with strong lifts to take them closer to the lay line for Table. As predicted, though, Table presented its usual challenge as the boats approached with dramatic drops in speed, tacking and course changes (many times and in all directions) to battle around the island. The struggle with Table lasted around 45 minutes for most boats, before they started to break free of its shackles and pick up speed towards Bay Island. At the back of the fleet, Paloma was able to benefit from watching the travails of the other boats and sailed a wider, faster course to make up significant ground.

在大約18個月前,在一次海事運動委員會會議上,Geoff Tayler提議舉行一個「慢船」帆船賽。這個提議得到普遍認同。這個念頭的出現,是因為白沙灣遊艇會的標準指引內有30分鐘的「中斷」規例,因此Geoff和其他人的帆船在周六系列賽和颱風盃帆船賽都未能在30分鐘內完成賽事,感到有點沮喪。在那次會議之後的6個月內,我們討論過這個提議,(有時沒有討論,因為Geoff沒有出席)。雖然在尋找「慢船」的代名詞方面有點困難,但事情慢慢地有進展。有時候,我們在推廣活動時要尋找較少貶義的用語!

Heading up to Bay Island, the boats enjoyed good winds and relished being free of Table’s grip. There was a debate amongst the RO Team, at this time, as to whether to shorten the course to finish at Bay Island, but with the wind solid and the lead yachts making good progress, it was decided to finish back at Table Island. Golden Delight led the race to Bay Island and had such a strong lead that she was unlikely to be caught. Countess of Cathay was putting in a performance that belied her struggles on the geometric course and enjoyed the sailing challenges that cruising does not give you.

Golden Delight eventually took line honours ten minutes ahead of Guerreiro. Jacqueline Boo was third to cross the line, but only after a struggle in the final 100m, where she parked up for a few minutes; this gave the chasing trio of Modesty Blaise, Countess of Cathay and Lazy Piggy an incentive to close the separation. The final two yachts, Triton and Paloma, completed their endeavours in a lifting southerly breeze, with Triton’s crew commenting afterwards that their fastest speed of the day was achieved immediately after the finish—such is summer racing in Port Shelter! Following adjustment, Golden Delight held onto first place, with Lazy Piggy and Guerreiro in second and third respectively.

If you are still reading this then you may have forgotten by now the headline of ‘Two Races and a Proposal’ (or maybe you are only still reading to find out what the ‘Proposal’ referred to!). I will now enlighten you.

The first boat to enter the race was Lazy Piggy and, in doing so, the skipper, Jimmy Lau advised the HHYC Sailing Office of a plan to propose to his girlfriend, Monica, at the end of the race; obviously expecting this plan to remain a secret. Without knowing which boat a check was made, out of courtesy, with the Boothroyd family who gave wholehearted approval as expected. Probably less than 20 people knew of the plan, prior to the committee boat leaving the pontoon with a PA speaker and a ‘Marry Me’ banner stashed on board.

As Lazy Piggy headed for the finish another boat, Free Holiday, approached bedecked with nautical flags (a check was made from the committee boat that there was no message in the flags) and pink and white balloons to join the celebration. Quite what the unsuspecting Monica made of this as Lazy Piggy approached the finish is not known!

Anyway, at the finish—slightly delayed due to three boats crossing the line close together—the selected music was switched on and the banner unfurled together with a congratulatory message on the white board, from the RO Team, and the proposal was presented. The proposal was confirmed subsequently to have been responded in the affirmative; you will be pleased to hear.

The results were revealed at the prize-giving back at HHYC that the overall winner on count-back—with a first and third— was Guerreiro over Lazy Piggy’s two second places (they had had enough excitement for one day). Modesty Blaise took the third place pennant. The prize-giving ceremony was opened with short tributes to Phillip Boothroyd from Mark Ashton and Flickie, Phil’s partner, with Mark reading out words of appreciation from Robyn and Mark Boothroyd. Flickie presented the awards, with the Countess Cup trophy—a silver ice bucket—and two engraved glasses presented to the skipper and crew (which notably included a number of Sailability sailors) of Guerreiro. Loud cheers all round! As always the biggest cheer went up for the beer sponsor, Carnegie’s Bar in Wanchai, who had enthusiastically donated three cases in memory of Phil (a friend of one of the owners). A promise was later elicited from Carnegie’s for a repeat performance for next year’s Countess Cup.

All-in-all a fantastic day on the water and in the bar afterwards with a commitment to run the Countess Cup again in 2017, when efforts will be made to ensure more boats make it to the start line—you certainly missed an enjoyable inaugural event. Suggestions came afterwards for a revised format for next year’s event with a finish at Yau Ley Restaurant and a series of similar ‘slow boat’ events amongst the proposals—watch this space!

第二場賽事,委員會艇上爭論着讓帆船到 Table Island 還是 Trio Island作賽——結論是往 Table Island,我們選擇了賽道100。開賽時,八艘船之中的六艘在鳴槍前10秒在起點線蠢蠢欲動,有五艘在起線OCS,結果賽事總監宣布召回船隻(在白沙灣遊艇會是罕見的)。事後解釋是「有潮浪」,但我們都有點質疑!再起步時,各艘船都更加小心,避免踏上起點線。賽事終於在不太明顯的風勢下展開了。

前往 Table Island 的賽事是稍快的,Triton 和 Guerreiro 很快就轉向,選擇了右邊近岸的路線航行,而其他帆船就維持右舷離岸位置。看來主船隊佔了上風,靠外線向Table Island進發。一如預期,Table Island 顯露了它的挑戰性,船隊接

近時要突然減速、轉向和改路線(轉了很多次和很多方向)以環繞島嶼航行。大部份帆船都與 Table Island 搏鬥了45分鐘,之後她們才解除束縛,全速向 Bay Island 進發。在船隊的後面,Paloma看著其他船隻受苦,採取更廣闊和更快速的航程,以圖收復失地。

在前往 Bay Island 的途中,船隻都享受着好風和因為能離開Table Island 而鬆一口氣。這時,賽事總監在討論是否縮短賽事,在 Bay Island 結束賽事。但隨着風勢穩定,而且領先的帆船進度良好,最終決定返回Table Island衝線。Golden Delight 以領先的姿態到達 Bay Island,並遙遙領先,看來很難被追上。 Countess of Cathay 表現不俗,彌補她在幾何賽的不足,並享受遊艇所不能給予的挑戰。 結果 Golden Delight 奪得線道榮譽,領前 Guerreiro 10分鐘。 Jacqueline Boo 第3名衝線,但衝線前100米她曾經過一番掙扎,並曾停泊了幾分鐘,這引起 Modesty Blaise、Countess of Cathay 和 Lazy Piggy 的一番爭逐。最後兩艘帆船,Triton 和Paloma在南風下完成壯舉。Triton 的船員賽後說,他們當日最快的航速是在衝線後——夏天在牛尾洲出賽就是這樣子!

如果你仍在閱讀本文,你可能已忘了題目「兩場賽事,一場求婚」(或者你繼續讀下去,看看一場求婚是甚麼一回事!)。讓我告訴你吧。

第一艘報名參賽的帆船是Lazy Piggy。船長Jimmy Lau告訴白沙灣遊艇會的賽事職員,他計劃在賽後向女友Monica求婚。

當然,整個計劃要保密。在不知道哪艘船的情況下,我們出於禮貌必需知會Boothroyd一家,他們一如預期給予首肯。只有不超過20人知道這個計劃。委員會艇由浮橋出發前,把揚聲器和「嫁給我吧」的橫額藏在船上。當Lazy Piggy 接近終點時,另一艘船 Free Holiday 靠近,亮出航海標誌旗(委員會艇檢查過旗上沒有任何訊息)、粉紅和白色的汽球,加入慶祝行列。一直到 Lazy Piggy接近衝線時,Monica 仍然懵然不知!

在終點線——因為三艘船衝線時非常接近而稍為延遲了——預先選定的音樂響起,橫額也拉起,白板上出現了賽事總監祝賀的句子,正式求婚。相信你也很高興知道,求婚獲得首肯了。

回到賽事。在白沙灣遊艇會的頒獎禮上公布結果,得到一個第一和一個第三的Guerreiro成為總冠軍,Lazy Piggy 得第二名 (他們那天真有太多興奮的事情了),Modesty Blaise 得到了 第三名。頒獎禮開始時,由 Mark Ashton 和 Phillip Boothroyd 的伴侶 Flickie 作簡短發言,向 Phil 致敬。Mark 讀出 Robyn 和 Mark Boothroyd 的讚賞之言,Flickie 頒發獎項,Countess C u p 獎 盃 是 一 個 銀 冰 桶 , 而 兩 座 刻 字 的 獎 座 分 別 頒 贈 予 Guerreiro的船長和船員(船員更包括「航能」的選手)。 全場歡呼最多的歡呼也給予啤酒贊助商,灣仔Carnegie’s B a r 慷 慨 地 捐 出 三 箱 啤 酒 以 紀 念 P h i l ( 他 是 其 中 一 個老闆的朋友)。Carnegie’s 後來承諾明年的 Countess Cup會同樣作出捐贈。

這天無論在水上或是在酒吧,都是非常棒的一天。我們同意明年再次舉辦Countess Cup,並會盡力讓更多船隻參加,今年你們錯過了很熱鬧的起步禮。有人對明年賽事的形式提出不同意見;有建議在有利海鮮酒家為賽事劃上完美句號;也有人提議多舉行類似的「慢船」賽——密切留意進一步的消息吧!

But for the man overboard… Now that I have your attention, please read on. The following is a synopsis of the Spring Saturday Series, HKPN Division, viewed from onboard Ichiban.

Race one—5 March, 2016Due to a serious lack of wind, there was only one race and that started 50 minutes late. It is noteworthy that only one of 18 boats (Getafix) did not hang around, unluckily, she departed only about five minutes before the race. After all the waiting, all the boats were keen to get away, in about five knots of wind—in the case of Bits & Pieces and Ichiban ‘too keen’, as both were declared OCS at the gun! Bits was persuaded over the start line by a combination of Ricochet and Ichiban about two seconds before the gun, so immediately began a restart; it took Ichiban a little longer to restart.

For the first lap and a half of the C5 Course the wind held around four to five knots, however, once boats turned for the final downwind leg, the wind started to die with not enough to fill the spinnaker. Eventually, the boats got home thanks to a filling tide!

In the light winds, the lighter boats were obviously less affected—hence a seven-minute gap in corrected time, between Ricochet in first and Xterminator in third, with Merlin taking second place. Bits’ in 5th and Ichiban in 7th paid for the false starts.

19 March, 2016An uneventful day all-in-all, spent sitting around onshore in fog and zephyr wind waiting for the free Carlsberg beer and races to be cancelled.

Race two—2 April, 2016Race five was supposed to be an islands race, but instead it was changed to two races around the cans following the failures of the previous race days. Essentially, what we had was a repeat of the first race day—with its delayed start, dying winds and single race. The boats were just happy to get started and get round. Xterminator took first place, with Bits & Pieces second and Ichiban a credible third place in the very light winds, in the only race of the day.

Races six and seven—16 April, 2016

Race six—on the way out and in the prestart, winds of 10+ knots were experienced and the longish course reflected the optimism that the wind would stay in. Unfortunately, the wind dropped during the starting sequence but was still enough to get boats away. The first round was routine, but on the second round, Ichiban tacked early to cut down the margin of error, and was, fortunately lifted during the run to the mark and managed to get round without the expected two tacks (just). Heading to the finish under spinnaker saw us close the gap on Xterminator and No One Else and with

a gust in the last 100m or so, we accelerated over the line. That last lift was key to the result it seems, as Bits and Pieces reported crawling across the line 10 minutes earlier. Ichiban first, Bits second (16 seconds separation) and No One Else third (39 seconds), with all boats finishing within 3.5 minutes on corrected time.

Race seven—In lighter winds, it was routine stuff for the first round—though having a magic (Good Vibrations) inside Ichiban at the top mark made for interesting spinnaker manoeuvres—asymmetric versus downwind. There was more fun at the bottom mark with Ichiban on port and IRC boat, Lady Butterfly, vehemently calling starboard on approach. Ichiban held the line and passed ahead by half a boat length—Lady Butterfly was not happy! Later, in the clubhouse, the Committee boat reported hearing the ‘discussions’. On the spinnaker run home on the final round, the second magic (Carter USM) got a round of Applause for slaloming behind Ichiban and in front of Windseeker, only to then have to bear way behind Xterminator, before being obstructed by Outrageous and having to gybe! Result—Bits & Pieces first, Ichiban second, and Applause third.

Races eight and nine—30 April, 2016Firstly, a summary of the overall positions at the start of the day (with both races needed for the discard): Bits & Pieces 10 (5 to discard), Ichiban 13 (7), Xterminator 16 (6); Applause 18 (7) and No One Else 22 (8) with only these boats in podium contention.

Race nine—started at 16:15 and the wind had filled in nicely. Ichiban had a reasonable start, but couldn’t keep up with Bits & Pieces who flew out of the blocks. Uneventful to the top mark, Ichiban rounded well and hoisted the spinnaker for the trip downwind. All was going well, as we prepared ourselves for the gybe to the bottom mark. However, mid-gybe, I spotted something unusual and dramatic unfolding to starboard—Robert was toppling backwards over the rail and into the water (quite gracefully from my vantage point!) with the help of the starboard guy. Fortunately, Rob held onto the spinnaker sheets—he was gybing the kite at the time—so was being dragged along about 10m off the stern. By a combination of the crew pulling in the sheet and a tiring Rob pulling himself in, he was alongside within a minute or so; getting him aboard was eventually achieved, but not without bruising to both Rob and Chris, who fell backwards onto a winch in the final haul onto the deck. While this was going on, I kept the helm pointed towards the mark and amazingly we were still in the race, by the time the ‘Rob Rescue’ was complete and the spinnaker recovered into the boat. Out with the genoa out and set for the final circuit, the rounding of the mark was tricky with eight boats arriving simultaneously. Plain sailing for the second round, Ichiban was close enough to Applause and Xterminator to be confident to have beaten them on handicap, but was it enough to hold onto first place overall? Unfortunately not, with Bits’ winning the race, ahead of Ricochet and No One Else, Ichiban’s sixth place was only enough for a Series second.

Final Overall Result: Bits and Pieces 21 (10 discard), Ichiban 21 (7), Applause 29 (8), No One Else 30 (8) and Xterminator 35 (10). Many Congratulations to Bits and Pieces for a second successive series win.

For the diary, the Summer Saturday Series starts on 11 June 2016, after the Countess Cup on 22 May 2016.

Race eight—started in lightish winds that veered left just as boats approached the start, forcing Ichiban at the pin-end to have to tack over onto port in order to cross the start line—this left us last on the water. Continuing on port tack, Xterminator was also with Ichiban on the right-hand side of the course and was rewarded with a few lifts along the way. It would be interesting to see how these boats fared compared to the boats that had stayed left. Pretty good, as it turned out, as Ichiban and Xterminator were comfortably in the race, with Bits & Pieces and Applause crossing only about 100m ahead. Nigel, as RO, had set up Course C2, which includes a triangle on the first lap—a change from the normal ‘sausages’. After rounding the top mark in a good position, amongst the other three boats—Bits’, Xterminator and Applause —with a real stake in the day, Ichiban headed left towards the B mark. As others had raised their spinnakers, Ichiban followed suit and with the advantage of a large spinnaker Ichiban glided past Xterminator and started to eat up the ‘ground’ to Bits’, who was struggling ahead in light winds. At this point, Applause was well on her way to the bottom mark and eventual rare line honours. After rounding the mark, in the light winds, boats were unsure whether spinnaker or genoa was the right sail, or whether port or starboard was required. Eventually port was selected by all, as the wind filled in from the left. Finishing the race after one hour 15 minutes—five minutes behind Applause and only one minute behind Bits’, on the water, Ichiban was now in the driving seat in the series. This, despite being beaten for first place by Lazy Piggy, the last boat over the finish line.

Overall positions: Ichiban 15 (7 discard), Bits 20 (10), Xterminator 25 (9), Applause 21 (7), and No One Else 27 (8).

第一場賽事(2016年3月15日)

由於嚴重沒風,當日只舉行一場賽事,而且遲了50分鐘才開賽。值得一提的是,18艘船當中只有一艘(Getafix)沒有起步,因為她不幸地在5分鐘前離開了。漫長等待之後,很多船都蠢蠢欲動,當時只有5風節,而 Bits & Pieces 和 Ichiban 太蠢蠢欲動了,雙雙被判OCS!鳴槍前兩秒,Bits 被 Ricochet 和 Ichiban 說服留在起點線,立即再次起步。Ichiban則花了較多時間才再起步。在C5賽道開頭的一個半圈,風勢約有4至5節,但是,當船隻轉向最後的順風航段時,風開始停下來,最終不夠風揚起三角帆。結果,船隻要靠潮浪才能回航!在微風的情況下,較輕的船隻比較有利,第一名的 Ricochet 和第三名的 Xterminator在修正時間後有7分鐘的差距,而 Merlin 得到第三名。Bits’第五名,Ichiban 得第七,這是起步失誤的代價。

平淡無奇的一天,在岸上一邊看着大霧與和風,一邊等待免費的嘉士伯啤酒(賽事取消)。

第二場賽事(2016年4月2日)

第二場賽事原本是環島賽,但在前一個賽事日取消後,現改為兩場賽事。基本上,這是第一個賽事日的翻版,延遲開賽,沒有風,只有一場賽事。船隻可以出發和航行已很高興了。在非常微弱的風勢下,Xterminator在當天唯一的賽事得到第一名,Bits & Pieces 第二而 Ichiban 第三名。

第六場和第七場賽事(2016年4月16日)

第六場賽事——在起步前,超過10風節的風勢和長長的賽道,令我們對風勢可以維持感到很樂觀。可惜風勢在起步時減弱了,但仍足以推動船隻前進。第一圈是常規賽,但在第二圈,Ichiban很早就轉向以收復失地,幸好向標記進發時加快

了,而且無需進行兩個轉向便可以轉彎了。揚起三角帆向終點進發時,我們跟 Xterminator 和 No One Else 的差距收窄,在最後100米出現陣風,我們快速衝線。最後的衝刺對結果很重要,Bits and Pieces 據報在10分鐘前已衝線。結果, Ichiban 第一名, Bits 第二(相距16 秒),No One Else 第三 (39 秒), 所有船在修正時間後在3分半鐘時間內完成。

第八場賽事在微風下開始,在接近起點時風向改變了,令Ichiban要轉向左舷以越過起點線,使我們成為最後的船。繼續轉向左舷,Xterminator和Ichiban一起在賽道右邊,沿途得到推進。看着左右兩邊的船隻比拼頗為有趣。很不錯地,Ichiban 和 Xterminator 都很輕鬆,而 Bits & Pieces 和 A p p l a u s e在 前 面 不 足 1 0 0 米 橫 過 。 賽 事 總 監 N i g e l 設立 賽 道 C 2 , 這 包 括 在 第 一 圈 有 個 三 角 型 賽 道 , 有 別 於 正常的「香腸型」賽道。與其餘三艘船Bits’、Xterminator 和Applause在有利位置繞過頂標後,Ichiban靠左向B標記前進。當其他船揚起三角帆的時候,Ichiban 跟隨這個做法,而且由於有個較大的帆,Ichiban超前了Xterminator並步步緊迫當時正在前面與微風搏鬥的Bits’。在這兒,Applause正向着底標進發,線道榮譽在望。繞過標記後,由於風很輕微,船隻都不肯定應該用三角帆或是熱那亞帆,抑或要用左舷或是右舷。結果所有人都用了左舷,因為風從左邊吹過來。在一小時15分後完成賽事,落後Applause 3.5分鐘,並只落後 Bits’一分鐘。Ichiban現在主導了系列賽,雖然被最後衝線的 Lazy Piggy 取代了第一位。總排名:Ichiban 15(扣除7分);Bits 20(10);Xterminator 25(9);Applause 21(7);No One Else 27(8)。

第九場賽事——在下午4時15分展開,風勢不錯。Ichiban起步不俗,但未能跟上Bits & Pieces。在頂標位置,Ichiban 繞圈不俗,揚起三角帆向順風航段進發。進展良好,我們準備轉向往底標。但中途發現右舷出現了不尋常情況,Robert在右舷水手協助下向後翻倒跌落水裏(在我的位置看起來有點優雅!)幸好,當時在為風帆轉向的Rob抓緊了三角帆,在距離船尾10米左右被抓住了。船員一起拉動帆布加上Rob自行拉緊,他很快便獲救,Rob和Chris都有些微損傷,Chris在甲板上跌倒受傷。這些事情發生的同時,我一直掌舵向標記進發。令人驚訝的是,我們仍然在比賽中。當拯救完Rob後,三角帆返回船上。我們揚起熱那亞帆向最後一圈前進時,有八艘船同時環繞標記。第二圈很順利,Ichiban貼近Applause和 Xterminator,有信心可以在讓分制下擊敗他們,但是,這能令我們得到總冠軍嗎?可惜不能。Bits’勝出了賽事,緊隨其後是 Ricochet 和 No One Else。Ichiban只得到第六名,只得到系列賽的第二名。

總成績:Bits & Pieces 21(扣除10分);Ichiban 21(7); Applause 29(8);No One Else 30(8);Xterminator 35 (10)。恭喜 Bits and Pieces 連續勝出兩個系列賽。

TYPHOON SERIES 2016 Racing on Scintilla

Very early on Sunday morning 5 June, the day before the anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, the Scintilla crew started to gather at Kellet Island, always entertaining to observe after the usual parties of Saturday night and probably Friday night as well.

The roll call was for 07:30 and by 08:15 we had the crew mustered, coffee-ed and breakfasted ready to head out and sail Scintilla round to Shelter Cove to start our Typhoon Series.

The weather was initially rather dark, thundery with heavy rains—then it cleared and we enjoyed fantastic fresh winds and outstanding views as we passed Clearwater Bay and headed to Port Shelter and the race start.

The start was delayed due to light to non-existent winds and the RO had a difficult job of repeating course numbers to the eager beavers now circling the Committee Boat with very little to do as we prayed for some wind.

And wait we did—till the fleet had been taken further out to find the wind—then it was off on a high speed race doing around 1.5 knots with Scintilla getting a good start at pin end and headed up the course. Not far in and we hit the same extensive holes as everyone else—but Tim the skipper and Dean the tactician kept their wits about them and we slowly pulled away.

Overall it turned into a long, hot day with plenty of time to enjoy the great views and watch fellow water sports enthusiast’s, usually fishing, as we headed to Bluff then Trio and lastly (and about time) to Bay where the race was cut short. On the way we were encouraged by multiple retirements and happy endless “Allo! Allo!” radio banter. Only on the final run to Bay did we get decent boat speed and Scintilla canted over, lifted her skirts and raced to the finish. A good finish after a long, hot and sometimes exasperating day of sailing—but it was good to finish on a high.

We then turned for Hebe—wished the Committee Boat team thanks—and then enjoyed the best winds of the day as we powered towards Hebe and the waiting beers and chit-chat. No chocolates this time for the Team but it was a reasonable start to the Series and we hope that future races have a modicum more wind and drama.

在6月5日星期日清早,即是「登陸諾曼第戰役」周年前夕,Scintilla的船員陸續抵達奇力島。他們看來在星期六晚,甚至是星期五晚都在派對盡興了。

7時30分開始點名,到了8時15分,所有船員已到齊,喝了咖啡和吃了早餐,準備駕駛 Scintilla 出發到 Shelter Cove 展開颱風盃賽事。

初時天色較暗,有雷暴和大雨。當我們經過清水灣並向牛尾海的起點前進時,天色轉為明朗,我們得以享受清新的微風和美景。

但由於風太弱,甚至沒有風,起步的時間延遲了。賽事總監忙於向委員會船周圍的熱心人士重複賽道號碼,我們無能為力,只能向上天祈求一點風。

我們就這樣一直等,直至船隊去到更遠的地方找到風,正當準備暢快地出賽時,風又停了,Scintilla 在大約 1.5 風節的情況下,起步不俗,然後向賽道進發。不久之後,我們跟大伙兒都「跌入黑洞」,但憑着船長Tim和戰術家Dean的智慧,我們慢慢拉開了。

總括而言,這天是一個漫長的炎熱日子。我們前往沙塘口山,然後是大癩痢,由於賽事縮短了,Bay Island 是終點。其間,我們有很多時間觀賞美麗的景色,看看水上運動愛好者的活動,例如釣魚等。在途中,我們還受到來自無線電發燒友的「Allo!Allo!」信息鼓勵。直到 Bay Island 的最後一程,我們的船速才比較像樣,於是 Scintilla 傾斜着揚帆向終點前進。在一個漫長、炎熱,還有點惱人的情況下航行了一天之後,這個賽果已很不錯了,何況我們的排名頗高。

後來我們回航到白沙灣,希望委員會船會致謝。然後在當天最好的風勢下,我們回到白沙灣,享用啤酒和談天說地。我們的隊伍這天沒有得到甜頭,但已是不錯的開始,希望未來的賽事會有多一點風和更具戲劇性。

The rain clouds and thunder lifted temporarily for the COA Midsummer Rally over the May Day (Labour Day) weekend. On a nice 15-knot breeze, we flew down to Shek O rock on a broad reach in just under two hours—a record for my boat! There we converged with boats racing from RHKYC, ABC and DBYC for a long, fast fetch back to Port Shelter. We were home by 16:00 to join the Sails East prize-giving at HHYC and enjoy two barrels of Seafarer’s Ale donated by Liquid Assets, which raised HK$1,300 for Sailability. Well done everyone! The evening was topped off by the Hebe Hoedown, where we danced our socks off!

The next morning, although somewhat sore, we headed out to the starting line for the Mirs Bay leg. Initially the wind was light, but we soon picked up a nice northeasterly breeze that took us up the coast past Tai Long Wan, then we anchored overnight by Outward Bound on Double Island. After the Sails East prize-giving we cracked open seven cases of Courage Directors Ale donated by Liquid Assets, with all proceeds going to Outward Bound. Some of the boats had a barbecue while others cooked up delicious Chinese hot pots and the local fishermen gave us a bucket of mussels—the best I have ever tasted. We enjoyed a beautifully cool evening fanned by a gentle southerly breeze and the phosphorescence in the water was so strong that night that every wavelet shone with a brilliant blue glow.

Unfortunately that southerly brought fog with it. While we started with over a mile of visibility, the wind ran out and the fog thickened as we travelled south. By Tai Long Wan visibility was down to just a few hundred metres. We cautiously felt our way into Rocky Harbour for the final lunchtime Sails East prize-giving at Yau Ley. This was washed down with four cases of Director’s Best Bitter, again donated by Liquid Assets, in aid of Treats. After lunch, the fog lifted and the sun peeked through allowing for a more relaxing journey back to Hebe.

On 22 May we enjoyed the inaugural Countess Cup—a race in memory of former Commodore, Philip Boothroyd, who played such an enormous role in overseeing the construction of the boatyard, marina and garden bar. The event is named after Philip’s boat, Countess of Cathay, and designed especially for slower boats, which cannot keep up with the new hi-tech, plastic fantastic yachts. It included a geometric course followed by a short island course to Bay Island. Despite severe weather warnings, we enjoyed a glorious warm summer day with a five-knot breeze, which held up for most of the day with a few gaps in the wind.

Guerreiro carried off first prize as well as everyone’s admiration as half of their crew were disabled sailors—good work lads! In second place came Lazy Piggy, followed by a successful proposal on the

congratulations to both of you! In a creditable third place came RHKYC boat Golden Delight. The Countess Cup will become a regular annual event, so do not miss it next year!

Looking forwards there is the Dragon Boat Festival Sailaway to Hap Mun Beach on 9 June. The format is similar to the popular HHYC New Year Day barbecue—a relaxing family day on the beach with Hebe friends. I’ll include some photos in next month’s column.

If you fancy something more ambitious, there is the COA Macau Race 1 – 3 July then the Mirs Bay Race 30 July, so even if you don’t race regularly this is a great opportunity to sail to Mirs Bay in company and join the party at Wong Shek Pier. The following day there is a pursuit race back to Port Shelter, where the slower boats start first and the fast ones have to catch up!

We are also cooking up a new event for 3 September—the Port Shelter Lap Dash, in partnership with RHKYC and COA. This involves trying to record the fastest lap of Port Shelter combined with a lunchtime beach barbecue and evening prize-giving, so two parties in one day! If you just want to record one relaxed lap and go for lunch, or try to exhaust yourself doing 10 laps before lunch and 10 after, then this is the event for you!

船主協會仲夏帆船賽(COA Midsummer Rally)在勞動節周末舉行當日,雨雲和雷暴暫時停了下來。在15風節的微風之下,我們只花了不足兩小時便航行到石澳——對於我的船而言是個紀錄!在那兒,我們匯合來自香港遊艇會、香港仔遊艇會和愉景灣遊艇會的隊伍,然後快速返回牛尾海。我們在下午4時抵埗,趕及在白沙灣參加 Sails East 頒獎禮,享用兩桶由 Liquid Assets 捐贈的Seafarer麥酒,它更為「航能」籌得1,300港元。大家都做得好!當晚,Hebe Hoedown把氣氛推到頂點,我們跳舞跳得非常盡興!

翌日早上,我們雖然感到有點疲倦,但仍要啟程前往大鵬灣賽道的起點線。初時吹微風,但我們很快就乘着很棒的東北風,沿著海岸線駛往大浪灣,然後停泊在灣洲的外展訓練學校過夜。在Sails East頒獎禮後,我們打開了七箱由Liquid Assets捐出的Courage Directors Ale,所有收益撥捐外展訓練學校。有些船上有燒烤,有些船就有美味的中式火鍋,本地漁民更送了一桶青口給我們—是我吃過最美味的青口。我們渡過了一個吹南風的微涼晚上,水中磷光閃閃,閃爍著耀眼的藍光。

可惜南風吹來了霧。雖然我們起步時能見度超過一英里,但後來風停了,我們向南航行時,霧越來越大。到達大浪灣時,能見度下降到只有幾百米。我們小心翼翼地前往糧船灣,出席在有利海鮮酒家舉行的Sails East頒獎禮和午宴。這次我們開了四箱 Director’s Best Bitter,同樣由Liquid Assets捐贈,收益撥

捐Treats。午宴後,霧慢慢散去,陽光開始露面,陪伴我們輕鬆回航到白沙灣。

在5月22日,我們參加了第一屆 Countess Cup。這個賽事是紀念前會長Philip Boothroyd的。他在任期間,為興建船塢、碼頭和花園酒吧扮演了重要角色。賽事的名稱是以Philip的帆船Countess of Cathay命名,專為未能跟上擁有先進技術帆船的慢船而設。賽事包括繞泡賽,還有前往Bay Island的短途賽。雖然當天有惡劣天氣警告,但我們渡過了一個和暖的夏日,5風節的微風差不多維持了一整天。Guerreiro奪得了冠軍和所有人的讚賞,因為船上一半船員都是殘疾人士——你們真了不起!第二名是 Lazy Piggy,船主 Jimmy Lau 在衝線後更成功向 Monica 求婚,恭喜兩位!第三名是香港遊艇會的 Golden Delight。Countess Cup 將會每年舉辦一次,所以明年不要錯過了!

即將舉行的活動包括6月9日的端午節航行到廈門灣海灘。活動形式類似大受歡迎的白沙灣遊艇會元旦日海灘燒烤派對——與白沙灣的好友在海灘上輕鬆享受家庭樂。我會在下一期Cruising刊登一些相片。

如果你有點野心的話,可以參加7月1至3日舉行的船主協會澳門帆船賽,和7月30日的大鵬灣賽事。對並非經常比賽的會員來說,這是跟大伙兒航行到大鵬灣和在黃石碼頭開派對的好機會。翌日會舉行到牛尾海的追逐賽,較慢的船隻會先起步,較快的船要趕上了!

As part of the build up to Rio and with a view to promoting all Paralympic sports in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Sports Institute invited Sailability to take part in their 'Paralympic Day' on Sunday 29 May, 2016. The event was very well attended by members of the public, members of the Government, press and media—not to mention a few sporting celebrities and film stars. Considerable interest was shown in the two boats we had on display (2.4mR & Hansa 303). Fortunately, our local volunteers turned out in exceptional numbers and managed to answer many questions from the differing age groups who visted our stand.

This was a very worthwhile event which generated new interest in ‘Sailability Hong Kong’ and the work we do at HHYC. My sincere thanks to all who supported us, particularly Mark Gor for coordinating the arrangements and for managing to get the 2.4mR through the right-angled entrance—without a scratch!

PROJECT 31

The SV90 from Greece is just over 9m in length, with a 3m beam and a weight a shade over two tonnes. It’s one Mercury Verado 350CXL outboard helps shift it to a top speed of 54 knots. It even comes with an electric toilet—and although it has a ballast tank for rough water and oversized high-speed racing trim tabs—I still wouldn’t fancy my chances using the head at those kind of speeds. Mind you, for 135,000 Euros it does go like the proverbial off a shovel.

This is the first boat that Princess (Marine Projects, Plymouth, UK) ever built in 1968. It’s been lovingly restored—with beautiful teak work, an original brass compass and framework for the windows being sourced out of old men’s sheds—this is a boat of many stories. The boat originally sold for 3,400 pounds and its sale marked the beginning of the success of the Plymouth shipyard that went on to create the Princess 32, 33 and 37 in the 1970s. The four-day event featured the biggest and best yachts and cruisers along with water sports, entertainment and food to raise money for the Children’s Cancer Foundation.

As a member of the Hebe Heaven Yacht Club Committee, I was invited to participate in the Sea Safety Day recently held in Sai Kung. Attracting representatives from Government departments including; the Marine Police, Fire Services Department and the Marine Department—the event aimed to heighten awareness of public safety at sea. I learned a lot of practical tips regarding the use of equipment, tools and life-saving techniques.

The sea safety campaign also included exhibitions from the police dogs and a combination sea rescue display by the Government Flying Services and the Marine Police. The sea safety day was a great opportunity and I look forward to sharing what I have learnt with other club members. I eagerly anticipate attending again in the future!

作為白沙灣遊艇會委員會的成員;我榮幸獲邀參加西貢區的海上安全日。安全日吸引政府各部門代表出席,包括水警、消防處、海事處等。安全日旨在提高大眾海上安全意識,當天我亦認識到很多救生儀器、工具及求生技能。

Displaying good seamanship is more than having an ability to handle a boat—it’s showing courtesy to others both on and off the water. This so includes preparing well for a fun day at sea by protecting the seas you sail in. As responsible sailors our best practices must now include ones that help heal our oceans by not discarding any of our accumulated waste into the waters. Stu Pryke from the Sustainability Committee shares some of the most effective ways to do just that.

When preparing for a day out on the water, there are several important things you can do to ensure you are not damaging the oceans.

• Take the ship’s ice box to the ice (avoiding the need to bring it in plastic bags to the ship).

• Don’t use any disposable bags unless they are bio degradable.

• Drinking water: take Coleman type water containers with a barrel tap and screw top lid and refill them at the water dispensers. Don’t use any plastic bottles at all unless they are reusable ones.

• Think carefully about food and the food wrapping that you are bringing on board. Prior to departure, remove plastic from fresh fruit and vegetables—particularly foam sleeves.

• Tinned goods should be transported in either cloth bags or PVC crates. Never allow cardboard boxes aboard—as they can harbour cockroach eggs, maggots, money spiders and termites—that are notoriously difficult to remove from any boat. Reusable food containers not only reduce rubbish on board they also help keep your boat free from infestation. If necessary, unpack goods from boxes at the dock.

With eight million tonnes of rubbish entering the sea every year it’s more important than ever to never throw rubbish overboard, unless it is 100% biodegradable. • Beer and soft drink cans should be squashed flat

and placed into a reusable box for transport ashore for recycling.

• Banana skins and orange peel should remain on board.• Greywater and heads waste should be diverted to

holding tanks and never be pumped overboard inside a marina, anchorage or close to the shore. If necessary, discharge greater than three miles offshore and never in marine sanctuary designated zones.

• Cigarette and cigar butts and filters should remain on board.

• Use cloth napkins rather than paper ones.• Use steel or good-quality glass containers.• Cook smart—use lids to conserve energy at the stove.• Make sure your eating utensils are re-usable e.g. steel

or bamboo—avoid one-time-use disposable plastic or wooden ones.

• Interior and galley cleaning: use Ecover, Bioclean, PureGreen24 or a vinegar and lemon mix.

• Deck cleaning: never use Swipe, bleach or CIF (formerly JIF).

• Above-the-water-line hull cleaning: use eco-friendly products such as Shurhold’s Yacht Bright, Thetford Marine Boat Wash or a home mix of vinegar and lemon.

• Heads: clean using a mix of vinegar and lemon, post-cooking olive oil residue or undrinkable wines (if there is such a thing on boats!)

• General cleaning duties should be carried out using recycled clothing rags, sheets, tea towels and the like—as these can always be washed at sea for reuse.

• Always buy food in bulk and have a provision for spares. • Keep food clean, labelled and paper-free and store in

either the bilges (which make excellent wine cellars) or below-floor stowage to help keep it as cool as possible and delay it spoiling.

• Fish offal and general food waste and leftovers can be disposed of at sea, preferably outside the three-mile limit as long as it’s organic.

• Use compostable products such as corn starch bags for rubbish.

• Nothing unless it’s biodegradable—vomit, fenders, pride and pirates are okay!

• All generators must be turned off by sundown.• Music—keep the noise local and be mindful of other

boats close by.

• Refrain from ‘gunning’ the engine as this causes noise and diesel soot.

• Be mindful of fuel and coolant spills.

• If possible, use wet wipes instead of toilet paper and then discard them in a hygienic box for emptying ashore.

• All sanitary products should also be discarded in a hygienic box for emptying ashore (captains should make visitors aware of this on boarding—and save themselves the job of having to unblock the heads too).

• It’s important to never dispose of any plastic products at sea including: rope tailings; beer and soft drink carriers; oil, fuel and coolant containers; tetra pacs; disposable lighters and matches.

• What gets into the food chain gets into us! If in doubt place any plastic into the ship’s rubbish containers.

船員最佳做法的

展現好船員的一面較駕駛船隻的能力更加重要—就是在岸上和水上都要對他人有禮貌。這包括保護你航行的海洋,為一個有趣的一天做好準備。我們的最佳做法就是必須保護海洋,不要把囤積的廢物棄置在海上。Stu Pryke 跟我們分享一些有效的方法。

當你準備在海上渡過一天的時候,有幾項重要事情可確保你不會破壞海洋生態。

• 使用船上的冰盒,避免攜帶膠袋上船。

On Saturday 14 June, Carol Biddell from the Sustainability Committee organised a small-scale impromptu beach clean-up day which was attended by willing Hebe volunteers. While some may have been patronising the Cheung Chau Bun Festival or involved in other activities, our group of 15 endeavoured to do our bit to clear up our local environment. We were a mini-version of the Pak Sha Wan Beach Clean Up Day—but this time having chosen just one beach to beautify not eight! Our destination was beyond Trio Beach on the opposite side of the headland to Ma Lam Wat—looking out across Port Shelter over to Kiu Tsui, Sharp Island.

Meeting in the Hebe bar for a wake-up coffee and short briefing, we wended our way down to the Hebe pontoon to board boats which ferried us to Ma Lam Wat. We were aware that we may have to curtail our expedition due to inclement weather, but fortunately luck was on our side and the rain was not forthcoming. All on board and Shaun’s Bonnie gracing the bow, nose in air catching the fresh breeze and using the grab rail as a back scratcher. We were armed with drinks—in reusable bottles of course—and snacks to sustain us. We motored out passing Trio Beach to make a sharp port turn and shortly after arrived at Ma Lam Wat Pier.

On disembarking we hopped onto a path leading to our designated beach (GPS reading 22, 21 40.89 degrees North 114 16 30.37 degrees East for future picnic hike reference!). Through flora and fauna with Bonnie leading us but dropping back to sniff any interesting scents—we trod carefully trying to avoid the slippery mossy patches. Sonia and I were both casualties landing unladylike on our derrieres! After a half-hour or so mini hike we finally reached the beach. Mini rock climbing was our next feat—well just a substantial knotted rope attached to a tree to assist our descent.

In front of us lay our tasks. We panned out along the stretch of two to three beach areas separated by superbly structured volcanic rocks—not easy to negotiate with the advancement of age—and continued to ‘bag our lot’. The usual mixture of plastic bottles, flip flops, cans, fish nets, and polystyrene discards littered the beach.

After a space of two hours or so we had managed to compile a mound of 20 rubbish bags and a heap of polystyrene-filled containers. These were then collected by MarDep the next day —who Carol had given a heads up to. Then it was time for us to take a breather, consume our goodies and enjoy the panorama with the costly mega-yachts passing by along with the Kau Sai Chau solar ferries.

Time stood still as youngsters Laurence and Alfie enthusiastically explored the surrounding rock pools unearthing—or should that be un-sea-ing?—miniature crustaceans, fish or anything that flipped or jumped in the swirling water. Each new yelp of glee confirmed their next discovery. I am sure they would have liked to take them home, but as we know ‘what lives in the sea, stays in the sea’ apart from when we want to eat it of course! We were also treated to Sonia’s ‘sea dance’. While gathering rubbish from the bushes backing the beach she managed to disturb a rather large nest of ants and began to get bitten. The solution was to make a quick beeline—or maybe ant-line—for the sea where she did a hasty shake, rattle and roll.

Time to pack up and wend our way back. On reaching the Pier, Paul called a number he believed to be the Pak Sha Wan Pier “Mm goy ngoh dei yiu aiy yat goh sampan—Ma Lam Wat hoi Pak Sha Wan.” I believe that’s what he said, and then after a ten-minute wait…up pops our sampan. What a service, bet you couldn’t do that from Blackpool Pier. Paul spotted the likely boat “Yeah that’s our man”, his number emblazoned on the roof as proof. A $10 ride back to Hebe followed by lunch and refreshments on the balcony then we were all ready to head home.

A lovely soak in a bath would not have gone amiss—only problem being, I haven’t got a bath! Carol would like to extend her thanks to all the volunteers of the day and will keep members posted on upcoming beach clean-ups.

在5月14日星期六,可持續發展委員會的 Carol Biddell 舉辦了一個即興海灘清潔日,有不少白沙灣義工參加。雖然當天許多人都到了長洲參加太平清醮巡遊或其他活動,我們的15人小組仍略盡綿力清潔附近的環境。我們是白沙灣海灘清潔日的迷你版—但這次只是挑選了一個海灘來清潔,而不是八個海灘!我們的目的地是麻籃笏岬角對面—三星灣泳灘對上—從牛尾海遠眺橋咀島。

我們首先在白沙灣酒吧喝杯提神咖啡和進行簡介,然後到浮橋登上接載我們到麻籃笏的擺渡。本來我們擔心惡劣天氣可能會阻礙行程,幸好天公造美,沒有下雨。所有人都上了船,Shaun的 狗兒Bonnie抬頭享受微風的吹拂,還用扶手來搔背。我們都帶了飲品—當然是循環再用的瓶子—和小吃。我們經過三星灣泳灘後轉彎,不久後就抵達麻籃笏碼頭。

上岸後我們由一條小徑向目的海灘進發(給未來的野餐人士參考,海灘的GPS讀數是22,21 40.89 度以北,114 16 30.37 度以東)。在Bonnie的帶領下,我們穿過花叢,牠偶爾回頭嗅嗅有趣的氣味——我們小心地走着,試圖避免踏上濕滑的青苔。Sonia和我都成為了屁股着地的受害者!經過大約半小時的小型遠足後,我們終於抵達海灘。我們的下一個壯舉是小型攀石,喔,其實只是打一個結實的結連接到樹上,以幫助我們下降。

我們的任務就在眼前。我們在有結構性火山岩分隔的海灘上分兩至三個區域工作—隨着年紀漸大,這實在不是易事—然後把垃圾檢起入袋。丟棄在海灘上的東西都是塑膠瓶、拖鞋、罐、漁網和發泡膠等東西。

大約兩小時之後,我們已裝滿了20個垃圾袋和收集了一大堆發泡膠容器。 這些東西隔天由海事處收集—是Carol通知當局的。然後,是時候讓我們喘一口氣,享受我們帶來的好東西,欣賞經過的昂貴巨型遊艇和滘西洲太陽能渡船風光。

時間好像停頓了,年輕的 Laurence 和 Alfie 積極地探索周圍的石池——是否在找東西?微型甲殼類動物、魚類或任何在水中飛躍和翻轉的東西。每一聲歡呼都證實了他們又有新發現。我肯定他們都想把這些東西帶回家,但我們都知道「活在海洋的東西,就要留在海洋」,當然,除非我們要吃進肚子裏!我們還欣賞了Sonia的海上之舞。當她在海灘後面的草叢收集垃圾時,打擾了一個大螞蟻巢,結果被咬。解決方法是盡快走直線到海邊,猛烈地搖動、跳動和翻滾。

是時候收拾和回程了。到達碼頭時,Paul 打了一通電話,他相信是打給白沙灣碼頭:「唔該我哋要嗌一個舢舨,麻籃笏去白沙灣。」我相信他是這樣說的。然後,大約十分鐘之後,有舢舨出現了。真是很棒的服務,我打賭在黑池的碼頭不會有這種服務。Paul看到相信是我們的舢舨,就說:「是我們的人了。」船頂上的電話號碼就是證明。我們只花十元便返回白沙灣,然後在露台上享用午餐和小吃,接着便準備回家。

The Tri-Wizard Tournament Words Arni Highfield

Last month, HHYC competed in the Tri-Wizard Tournament. Everybody else called it the ‘Three Clubs Snooker Tournament,’ but I thought it needed a bit of magic if we were to win. The team consisted of CK our Commodore, Stuart Mason, Gareth Williams and myself as Captain, against RHKYC and ABC.

The match was played at the Hong Kong Club, and luckily, we showed respect for the exalted surroundings by wearing team T-shirts kindly provided by CK—the only team to do so. Perhaps his efforts focused our minds on actually earning them, because, amazingly, we won! Each of us won at least one game, and most (but not all) won more than that. Don't worry Gareth, I won't mention who it was. It all came down to the last deciding doubles where Gareth recovered his skills (and enabled somebody I cannot mention to remain unbeaten all night).

So HHYC are champions of something else besides having the top Optimist girl in the last regatta. (Brilliant Nicolle, well done!) Thanks to CK for making all the arrangements, and to the team for playing so well.

上個月,白沙灣遊艇會參加了三強爭霸賽(Tri-Wizard Tournament)。所有人都稱這項賽事為「三遊艇會英式桌球賽」,但我認為我們要勝出的話,真的需要一點法術。我們的隊員包括會長CK、Stuart Mason、Gareth Williams和我這個隊長,而對手是香港遊艇會和香港仔遊艇會。

賽事在香港遊艇會舉行,幸好,我們對那尊貴的環境表達了少許敬意,穿上了由CK準備的隊伍T恤,而我們是唯一一隊這樣做的。或許他的努力令我們能專注賽事,因為,令人驚訝地,我們真的勝出了!我們每人都贏了至少一局,而且多數人(不是全部)贏了超過一局。Gareth,不用擔心,我不會透露是誰。到了最後一局決定性的雙人賽,Gareth 終於重拾狀態(並令到一個我不能透露的人士能夠在那晚長勝)。

白沙灣遊艇會除了在上一個帆船賽擁有最佳的Optimist級別女選手(了不起的Nicolle,做得好!),還摘下了多一個冠軍!感謝CK的所有安排以及各位表現出色的隊友。

The sun is shining, the weather is beautiful and summer is finally here—and with it our racing season is up and running.

On 22 May we ran the first Countess Cup, in memory of ex-commodore Philip Boothroyd. The concept behind this race was to give the boats who want to race—but struggle to finish when racing against newer, bigger, faster boats—an opportunity to compete in races designed for them. You can read all about the event on page 36.

Coming up, we have the Quest Yachting Typhoon Series, with the ever-popular Mirs Bay race and party on 30 July. Cruisers and power boats are more than welcome to join us at Wong Shek Pier for the festivities.

On alternating weeks we will also be running the UK Sailmakers Summer Saturday Series. The first race is a short islands course and then each race day after there will be geometric races.

The cruiser representatives on the sailing committee have also been very busy and there are lots of great events planned for autumn—so keep your eyes peeled for these.

It has previously been stressed to members to please be considerate when berthing your vessel alongside the south pontoon. We are still receiving complaints from members who have been unable to berth temporarily; as other members’ boats were berthed on the pontoon longer than the permitted hours. Our security staff will patrol the pontoon regularly and they will ask members to move their boats if found to be exceeding the time limit. Please be considerate, and not abuse this facility to the detriment of other members.

In an effort to reduce the sampan waiting time, Ale, our Marine Manager has introduced a drop-off zone at weekends—just beneath the green crane. We hope you will take advantage of the re-zoning and thereby reduce the pressure on the Club sampan service.

Ale and his team are working closely with the Operations Committee in an attempt to make our facilities the best in Sai Kung. In order for us to succeed—he and his team need all of the membership’s support. So please follow the guidelines in place with regards to the pontoons, and make sure all can enjoy the facilities safely. Your support for his work is very important.

早前我們已提醒會員,在南浮橋停泊船隻時要顧及他人。我們仍然接到會員投訴,因為有其他會員的船在浮橋超時停泊,令他們不能臨時停泊。保安人員會定時巡視浮橋,如果發現有會員超時停泊,會要求他們把船駛走。請大家有點公德心,不要濫用設施,損害其他會員的利益。

為了縮短等候舢舨的時間,海事經理Ale在周末設立了落客區,就在綠色吊機下面。希望大家善用這個區域,紓緩會所舢舨服務的壓力。

Ale和他的團隊正與執行委員會緊密合作,令我們的設施成為西貢區內最好的設施。為了達致成功,他和他的團隊都需要大家合作。因此,請遵守有關使用浮橋的指引,確保所有人都可以安全地使用設施。大家對他的工作的支持是非常重要的。

夏季已經來臨,氣溫已高達攝氏32度,在此提醒各位會員在戶外活動或工作時必須要保充足夠水份及切勿長時間逗留在陽光下以防中暑。

因最近海事員工仍有2個空缺,我們已正在招聘中,而繁忙時段上落船服務將受影響,如會員需要使用此服務,請在1小時前致電海事辦公室安排有關落水服務。海事辦公室開放時間為每日早上9時至6時。如沒有經電話提前安排落水服務,海事辦公室將安排該船隻在完成所有預約之船隻後,以先到先得之形式安排落水服務。

使用船隻後,會以先到先得之安排為會員進行上水服務。如會員需將船隻停留在船架清洗或維修,請提前通知海事部員工。如會員沒有提前通知而,可能會向會員收取額外費用,多謝。

在假日或公眾假期前夕,停車場往往都供不應求,為方便會員停泊,在假期時,本會海事辦公室已開放船廠範圍提供更多停車位置給會員使用,在此提醒各會員,如車輛不是停泊在停車場指定範圍內,請務必將車匙交給停車場管理員或泊車同事保管, 以便有需要時移動車輛。

每年6月至10月份都是颱風活躍季節,本會海事辦公室提醒各會員,無論船隻停泊在浮泡或浮橋,必須檢查繫繩是否穩固,如發現任何損壞必須馬上更換。

因應船廠上吊船服務十分忙碌,如會員計劃進吊船服務,請盡早安排。

在此提醒使用小艇浮橋之會員,在大雨後請將小艇內之積水清理,以免小艇沉沒及造成蚊患。

本會已安排專用的舢舨在比賽前後時間往來白沙灣遊艇會及香港遊艇會碼頭,指示牌會掛在舢舨上,請確認登上正確的船隻。如會員要求訪客泊車,根據會例,會員必須在訪客到達前一小時,在辦公時間向總辦事處或在非辦辦公時間向餐飲部提出申請,會員必須要提供訪客車牌號碼以便識認。

本會海事辦公室希望會員今年夏天有個開心和安全的海上遊。

Summer is here and the temperature has already reached 34 °C in Sai Kung. A friendly reminder for everyone undertaking outdoor activities—make sure you drink lots of water and limit your time out in the the sun to prevent heat stroke.

We are currently recruiting two new marine staff so please be patient with launching services at weekends during this time. If you require the launching service to and from the hardstand—please notify the Marine Office by telephone at least one hour in advance. The operating hours of the Marine Office are 09:00 to 18:00 daily. Where no advance telephone booking has been made, boats will be removed from the boat rack and deployed as indicated by the owner on a first-come first-served basis. If members wish their boats to be placed on a cradle or trolley for washing or maintenance, please notify Marine staff before returning your boat to the boat rack. Otherwise, you may be charged twice for lifting and putting back your boat.

On holidays, the shortage of parking space is a concern—therefore for convenience of members, the boatyard area will be opened for parking (where suitable) to help provide more car parking space. Please note that members’ vehicles which are not parked in designated parking areas must leave their keys with the car jockey or security guard in case the vehicle has to be moved.

During the June to October typhoon season, members on both swing moorings and pontoon berths should regularly check and ensure that all lines are strong enough for typhoon conditions and that their lines are securely tied to their moorings or cleats. Please replace any worn lines immediately. The annual mooring inspection will take place in October this year. The boatyard schedule is extremely busy due to the reduced area for working on boats. If you require a lift out—please book as far in advance as you can. A friendly reminder to all tender owners who have a dinghy on a tender pontoon; please empty the water out of your tender after heavy rain to avoid it sinking and to stop the breeding of mosquitoes. We have arranged a dedicated sampan to travel from HHYC to Shelter Cove Pier on each yacht race day before and after the race. Signs will be put up on the sampan / ferry. Please make sure you are boarding the correct vessel to go to your destination. For those who wish to have guests park on the premises—please advise the general office (or the Restaurant Manager if after office hours), at least one hour prior to the time of the guests arrival and provide the registration number of the guest's vehicle so the gatekeeper can be notified.

夏天到了!牛尾海已佈滿大大小小的船隻,海灘上也滿是享受日光浴的人群⋯⋯這實在是參加本會舉辦的各項活動的最佳時機了。

我們的暑期課程很快已滿額,希望年輕的學員在初嚐航海滋味之後,會繼續參與這項運動,並參加我們的星期六航海課程!

航海訓練中心忙於舉辦各項活動。在5月21至22日,我們舉辦了國際丈量員研討會。這個研討會由香港帆船運動總會主辦,並由國際帆船總會(前身為ISAF)贊助。

在5月28至29日周末舉行的一年一度SLAM小船公開賽競爭激烈,吸引了全港超過60個隊伍參賽。衷心感謝賽事管理團隊的努力,令賽事順利舉行。

在6月4日星期六晚,花園酒吧搖身一變成為音樂廳,樂隊為出席Boogie-by-the-Bay派對的人士即場演奏至深夜。這是為白沙灣遊艇會發展基金的青年航海計劃籌款的主要活動之一。再次衷心感謝各位家長義工和助手的努力,為大家帶來一個盡興的晚上。

It’s summer time! Port Shelter is fluttering with sailboats big and small, the beaches are swamped with sunbathers…there is no better time than now to join the plethora of activities the Club has to offer during the season.

Our Summer Holiday Programme is fast filling up, and we hope that as the young participants get their first experience of sailing, they will continue to stay in the sport and join our Saturday Sailing Programme!

The Sail Training Centre has been bustling with events and activities. On 21 – 22 May, we proudly hosted the World Sailing International Measurers Clinic, organised by the Hong Kong Sailing Federation under the auspices of World Sailing (formerly known as the ISAF).

The annual SLAM Open Dinghy Regatta was hotly contested the weekend of 28 – 29 May, attracting more than 60 entries from all over Hong Kong. A big ‘thank you’ to the Race Management Team for the huge success of the Regatta.

Saturday evening 4 June saw the Garden Bar transformed into a lively concert hall where live band performances entertained the audience till late in the night for our Boogie-by-the-Bay party. This is one of our major fundraising projects for the HHYC’s Development Fund for Youth Sailing. Another big ‘thank you’ to the parent volunteers and all helpers for making this evening a wonderful and successful event.
