Experimental and Pending Courses: Fall 2022

EXPERIMENTAL COURSES (on the schedule, but not in the catalog)

AHS 270. Social Determinants of Health. (2 cr.) CRN 83321

This course examines the influence of social determinants of health (SDOH) on health behaviors and outcomes, and

particularly the application of an SDOH framework to medicine, public health, and other allied health professions.

Social determinants of health are defined as the conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn,

work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks.

An SDOH framework allows for consideration of social and structural determinants of health disparities and

inequities, including racism, poverty, and other forms of systematic bias and injustice. Students will gain in-depth

understanding of an SDOH framework and will use this framework to recognize and analyze social and structural

determinants of specific health issues and behaviors. This is a reading-intensive seminar which emphasizes critical

thinking, discussion, and application of concepts to real-world challenges.

ANTH 360. Christianity and Culture in Asia. (4 cr.) CRN 83193

Asia is the largest and most populous continent on earth, and enjoys remarkably rich and diverse heritage. This

course highlights understanding of Christianity and Culture in Asia by exploring the Christian traditions,

Movements, Missions, Communities, Persecution, Contextualization, Untouchability, Caste, Honor Killing, Gender

Discrimination, Ethnicity, Identity, Religion and Socio-cultural patterns and practices in the context of Asia. The

course is relevant to all those who are interested to engage with Asian churches, Asian communities, and cross-

cultural work in general.

COMM 360. Group and Professional Communication. (4 cr.) CRN 83375 This class explores research and best practices related to collaboration, groups, and professional communication.

Students will examine how these skills are essential for kingdom-building work, and put their learning into practice

through a team-based project focused on an important community issue. In addition, students will learn important

professional communication skills such as interviewing, resume-writing, and more.

MATH 210. Statistical Programming. (4 cr.) CRN 83337

Covers practical issues in statistical computing using R and/or Python. Topics are covered with the entire data

science pipeline considered, including but not limited to: reading and storing data, plotting and visualization, data

modeling, writing programs, organizing and commenting code, debugging, accessing libraries, data structures and

communication of results. Students will need access to a laptop (Window/Mac/Linux OS).
