Recruiters' Handbook 2010 - 11 3
The business environment has never been as dynamic and chaotic as it is today. The world
economy is starting to rebound after one of the biggest recessions ever. As a result, dramatic
changes are being witnessed in the corporate climate all across the world and India is no
different. Ever changing government policies, consumer demographics and other such macro
level changes are ushering in and the business environment today, is in a state of flux. The
present circumstances call for decision makers and managers who are swift, dynamic, strongly
grounded in fundamentals and are capable of making rational decisions. The Masters of Business
Economics (MBE) programme offered by our Department aims at equipping the students with all
the requisite skills in order to transform them into well-rounded individuals poised to face any
challenges that the corporate world might pose for them.
The course has increasingly gained relevance with the management's realization of the
importance of strategic and quantitative analysis in planning and decision making. Furthermore,
the continually evolving nature of business requires managers who are dynamic and passionate
about their respective fields. This also involves a clear understanding of the business cycles,
government policies and international events that have major bearing on all companies. The
students at MBE possess the right theoretical and practical knowledge in assessing the impact of
these developments on business. Students at MBE come from varied backgrounds such as
engineering, commerce, economics, and sciences and are selected through a rigorous process
consisting of a written test, group discussion, and interview, conducted on an All-India basis.
Fresh graduates as well as students with prior work experience comprise the MBE batch every
year. This judicious fusion of students with eclectic backgrounds helps the students learn from
each other and grow together as a group. The programme is designed to instill them with
innovation, leadership and teamwork skills.
Over the past 37 years, the energetic and visionary youth of MBE have carved a niche for
themselves as business analysts, financial planners, economic consultants, financial advisors,
stock exchange analysts, entrepreneurs, marketing managers, lecturers, academicians,
management consultants and economic journalists.
As the Head of this institution, it is my privilege to invite you to be associated with our
Department.
Prof. Rashmi Agrawal
Since its inception, the Department of Business Economics has strived to keep its
curriculum and training methodology in line with the needs of the industry. Changes in
the economy and industry have been swiftly incorporated into the pedagogy. The changes in
the curriculum from academic session 2010-2011 onwards are a reflection of the
Department's commitment to adapt itself to the ever changing business environment.
Once they have acquired the basic knowledge of a discipline, students at MBE are encouraged
to apply this knowledge by solving problems and case studies. Doing projects and writing
research papers enables them to explore advanced concepts in different disciplines. The
blend of theoretical knowledge and its application prepares our students to face challenges
in their respective professions. The focus is on grooming students to think, communicate,
and work independently as well as in a team. It is these skills that make them strong
contenders for positions that matter in the corporate, consulting and academic world.
The economic downturn that we witnessed recently reemphasized the need for strategic
analysis and foresight when important decisions are being made. Managers who can think
dynamically and take well informed decisions are the real assets of organizations. Over the
course of 2 years, students at MBE are trained to carefully analyze situations before taking
business decisions. They are taught to be not merely human 'resources' but human 'assets' of
their respective organizations. Every year, the course attracts an eclectic mix of
organizations offering profiles in the field of Consulting, Marketing Research, Analytics and
Business Modeling, Financial Analysis and Valuation, Economic Journalism among others. The
number and diverse nature of companies being added to our 'regular recruiters' list each year
mirrors our belief that we, at MBE, train managers for tomorrow.
As the faculty placements advisor, it is my privilege to invite you to be associated with our
Department.

Students are required to undergo 6-8 week long summer

Thus, over the course of 2 years, students are meticulously

The MBE programme was instituted to focus on the crucial nexus
between Business and Economics. The programme offers its
students an enhanced understanding of business fundamentals
augmented with Applied Economics which realigns the managerial
decision-making. The curriculum of the programme spans across
the fields of Finance, Marketing and Economics along with the
quantitative perception of the markets to understand and predict
their behavior in future without losing the sight of environmental
considerations of such business activities.
Effective management requires taking decisions based on
contextual analysis and insights. And it is more so in the current
business environment in which organizations are witnessing and
undergoing massive changes. Thus, the emphasis at MBE is on
developing a holistic perspective that enables the budding
business economists to deal with unstructured situations and on
imparting skills for decision making under uncertainty. What sets
it apart from other postgraduate courses is that it not only bridges
the long-drawn gap between business and economics but also aids
in managerial decision-making by bringing together business
fundamentals and economic concepts.
MBE programme, patterned on a similar programme offered by
Harvard Business School, offers up-to-date world-class
curriculum along with interactive student activities to ensure the
holistic development of interpersonal skills of students as
individuals and team players to make them successful in every
walk of life. The course is delivered, through a number of

The inaugural ceremony of the Association of Business Economics marks the opening of the new session at MBE. The inaugural is addressed by eminent personalities from the world of corporate and academia. This year's inaugural was held in the Department on 10th August, 2009. The highlight of the academic calendar at MBE, the Annual Convention provides a valuable platform for interaction between industry and academia. A current business issued is chosen as the theme for the convention and distinguished industrialists, policy makers, professionals and academicians are invited to put forth their views.
MBE uses this occasion to bring out its annual publication “The Business Economist”, which features research papers and articles relevant to the convention's theme. These articles are contributed by our distinguished faculty members and students of the Department. The magazine is circulated among a large number of business houses, professionals, academicians and business schools.

With its unique curriculum and exceptional student quality, MBE has continued to
attract many reputed organizations. Students have been absorbed in diverse areas of
consulting, marketing, finance, research, analytics and policy-making where they
have proved their mettle time and again and have established themselves in the top
echelons of the corporate world.
Over the past few years, placements at MBE have scaled newer heights in terms of
profiles offered as well as the nature of organizations visiting the campus. Some of the
profiles offered to our students have been: Economic Research, Analytics and Business
Modeling, Equity Research, Credit Risk and Foreign Exchange Management, Corporate
Finance, Market Research, Brand Management, Channel Sales and International
Marketing.
The success of Placement season 2010 at MBE stood testimony to our belief that we, at
MBE, are developing managers whom recruiters consider to be assets for their
organizations. The remunerations offered in 2010 scaled new heights with MBE
recording its all time high mean, median and highest salaries. If one goes beyond the
numbers, the picture gets even better. Many new companies came to the campus and
an eclectic mix of profiles was offered to students. The companies which came to the
campus for the first time were 9dot9 media, Dunnhumby, NETiit and Prime Database.
Some new profiles which were offered to students include Customer Research and
Media Research.
The upbeat mood at the campus was also reflected in the summer internships process
of 2010. The number of offers made was twice the number of students. Many new
organizations, especially PSUs, came to the campus to recruit summer trainees.
Students were offered internships in the following esteemed organizations:

informal setting.

Discussions, Preliminary Interviews or written tests prior to the final selection procedure.
Final Selection Process: The Final Interviews and/or other processes are conducted on the
