Do social media “likes” win elections? A web historiography of Narendra Modi’s journey in the 2014 Indian General Elections

Introduction General Elections are India’s biggest democracy ritual, in which the Prime Minister of the country gets elected. The 2014 edition of the elections saw the use of Social Media for the Cirst time in the history of the country. This was introduced by one of the candidates of the elections, Narendra Modi, whose case study concerns this research. Narendra Modi (NaMo) is the current Prime Minister of India and one of the most inCluential politicians in the country. He has largely been a controversial Cigure in the country due to his right-‐wing ideologies and his failure in preventing the 2002 Gujarat communal riots as the Chief Minister of the state. He was nominated as BJP’s (the second largest political party in India after the Indian National Congress) Prime Ministerial candidate for the 2014 General Elections and won the elections through a landslide mandate. This study of web historiography recreates the Narendra Modi’s journey of the 2014 Indian General Elections, and his eventual victory through the timeline of his Facebook page.

Reasons for this study

1. As mentioned earlier, social media was used for the very Cirst time as a campaign tool in the 2014 edition of the elections. Even before the election campaign, NaMo was already a well-‐established brand on Facebook with close to 5 million fans. His current social media presence includes, Facebook (25 million fans), Twitter (8.02 million followers), Google Hangouts (20 million followers), YouTube (2 million subscribers), Instagram (1.2 million followers) etc. The Cirst research question therefore, is to Cind out if social media inCluenced the election victory of Narendra Modi, as most studies claim. 2. Social media is usually credited with creating larger than life personalities. NaMo’s image was mostly tainted by his suspected involvement in the communal riots. Hence his main challenges was to present himself as a secular leader. Social media emerged as a powerful tool in this quest. This opens up the second research question -‐ Did social media help NaMo in getting an image makeover from being a right wing fundamentalist to being a secular leader?

Web Historiography Approach This study is a form of event based historiography, where the attempt is to trace the event through the Facebook page instead of a website. This is vastly different from the social media based archiving method called the “SelCie / Autobiographical” historiography – in the way that this is not a story of self-‐quantiCication.

This is a simple method of tracking an event as it unfolded real-‐time on Facebook. Reasons for using Facebook over other new media platforms are:

1. The content on Facebook is more frequently updated and hence is more current in comparison to a website. Moreover, a Facebook page has conversations with the followers that make the quality of the data far more richer than just static information waiting to be read on a website.

2. Access to Facebook data statistics is much easier than it is on Twitter. Data on Facebook is presented in a chronological order, unlike Twitter where a search for the event #hashtag has to be done in an ocean of tweets. Besides, there is also the possibility of the #hashtag not being unique or being copied by other users thereby adding a lot of unwanted junk to the actual data on Twitter.

3. The output Cile of a Facebook page crawl using Netvizz is much easy to assimilate and analyse. It is an excel Cile where the data is broken down to individual elements such as number of likes, shares, comments, engagement value etc.

4. This kind of data break-‐up allows a researcher to visualise the results by using these data elements in different combinations. These visualisations lead to interesting qualitative discoveries about the page, as is shown by this study in the following pages.

5. This study concerns a particular event from one of the pages on Facebook, and is not the study of the Facebook platform itself. Hence the ‘robots.txt’ limitation, which is a major challenge for researchers trying to archive Facebook, does not apply here.

6. Another major advantage of doing web historiography through Facebook is the speed of the application Netvizz, which is much faster than the Wayback Machine used to crawl the web archives.

Scope of the study The scope of this study is limited to the events between the dates 01 September 2013 to 16 May 2014. This is the time period between which NaMo was appointed as the prime minister candidate to the time he won the elections.

However, for reasons of contextualising and better understanding, an overview data of posts before and after this campaign period are also captured. The time ranges are:

• Before the campaign: 01 January – 31 August 2013

• After the campaign: 17 May -‐ 19 November 2014.

Only two data points for each of these time durations are captured. Exhaustive data capture would broaden the scope of this study, which is not desirable. Hence, the data points captured are:

• Total number of posts during each of these periods (captured through Netvizz)

• Number of followers during each period. These are approximate numbers determined by studying the various media articles that followed this event closely. This is because Netvizz does not have the facility to extract the information on fan count.

Methodology The steps followed for collecting and analysing the data is as follows:

• Data collection through Netvizz

• Capturing screenshots of posts using the Firefox add-‐on ‘Grab them all’

• Data Analysis of different parameters

• The Cirst step in this process is to “Like” the Facebook page ‘Narendra Modi’.

• Open the Netvizz app on Facebook – below is a screenshot of the app

•Selecting the data inputs for the app needs to be done with care. For this particular study, the time range is 8 months long, with 738 posts and close to 14 million followers. This is a huge database and if it is run all at one go, it can breakdown the app itself. Hence the entire time range is divided month wise and run in batches.

•As shown in the screenshot above, only the post statistics are collected – i.e. the count of likes, shares, comments, engagement value, link of the post, time of post publication, type of post etc.

•The network or comments database are not collected, as the follower base for this page is too big. This means that for each post on the page, there are tens of thousands of likes, shares and comments – which makes it a massive Cile to download. On trying to download this data, the speed of the app indicated that it would take at least a

week or more to download all the Ciles for the 738 posts. Since the study is being done in a limited timeframe, it is decided that this data will not be taken into consideration.

•The next data input selected is “posts by page only”. This is because fans are not allowed to post on the page wall and hence there are no user-‐generated posts.

•As described in the scope of the study, an overview data of posts before and after this campaign period are also captured.

Capturing screenshots of posts using the Firefox add-‐on ‘Grab them all’

•The output Cile has a data element called the “post_link”, which is a direct URL to the speciCic Facebook post. All the URLs for the entire time period were collated into a text Cile.

•This text Cile was then fed to the add-‐on ‘Grab Them All’, which captures the screenshot of each post. Thus, the repository of the screenshot images was built. (Attachment 2.zip)

Data Analysis of different parameters

The output Cile of Netvizz provides several data elements. But for our study only the following data points are considered, keeping in mind the scope of the study and the time frame:

• Post_type: This data helps in determining if the ‘post_type’ has an impact on the engagement value of the post, and if so which ‘post_type’ is more popular. All the posts of this campaign are divided into three “types” as per the out Cile (Refer Attachment1.zip):

o Link based posts -‐ posts that connect the users to a link to peruse further information.

o Photo posts -‐ posts that have a picture based message. o Status updates -‐ posts that are regular status updates without any video,

photo or link embedded in them. • Date of publishing: This Cield is critical to determine the date of publication of

the post, frequency of posts both month-‐wise and overall. It helps us to get an overview of which months have seen the most number of interactions, and also determine why some months have heavier trafCic than others.

• Engagement value: This is a sum of: the number of actual likes for a post + the number of comments made on a post + number of times it has been shared. The engagement level gives an overall idea of the quality of interactions a post has generated. With this data set, we are able to analyse how the engagement levels of posts have varied over time, ‘post_type’ and content. The below steps outline how these analysis were made.

Using the option of the pivot table feature on the data Cile, the required data elements were extracted. (Refer Appendix 1) Through this we are able to determine the following aspects:

1. Number of posts per month (Refer Appendix 2, Table 1) 2. The number of ‘post_type’ per month (Refer Appendix 2, Table 2) 3. The number of ‘post_type’ overall (Refer the bottom most row of Appendix 2,

Table 2) 4. Engagement value of different ‘post_type’ per month (Refer Appendix 2, Table 3) 5. Engagement values of posts for the entire duration of the campaign (Refer the

last column of Appendix 2, Table 3) 6. Top 5 posts of the campaign per ‘post-‐type’ (Refer Appendix 2, Table 4) 7. Top 5 posts in the overall campaign (Refer Appendix 2, Table 5)

The researcher also deCined an extra parameter to help analyse the posts one level further. This parameter is called the ‘Theme of Post’. A look at posts on the page reveals the sheer variety in the topics of the posts. The topics range from history, Cinance, human resource, religion, politics, current affairs, election news, sports etc. The content of a post helps determine which issues are of more importance to the NaMo campaign. A study of the themes also reveals hidden patterns of posts, if any. Hence to make the study more comprehensible, the researcher decided to categorise all the 738 posts in the below 11 themes.

a. Election Agenda: Posts talking about the failures of the opposition, plans and ideas of future development, manifesto for 2014, talking points or speech excerpts from rallies.

b. Rally Updates: Posts talking about the various rallies being conducted, the schedules, and other logistical information.

d. Religious Posts – Posts that have religious content or religious leanings. These posts include festival wishes too.

f. Social Programs – Posts talking about various social gatherings, and events NaMo attends or takes part in.

g. Assembly Elections – During this campaign period, state elections were announced in 3 Indian states and NaMo campaigned for BJP in these states as well. This theme includes posts relating to this event.

h. Feel Good – Posts that show his softer aspects like interactions with his mother, thanking the supporters or followers for their support.

Points to note: i. These themes are self-‐generated by the researcher and do not follow any

external political / social media guideline.

ii. The themes were generated based on the study of different topics covered on the page. They are relevant to this study only, and may not apply to other political pages or studies.

iii. These are also not the only set of themes possible for this page. Different researchers studying this page can come up with different metrics and themes to categorise the posts.

iv. In this case, the researcher has perused each post manually and developed the following themes based on her understanding.

v. Also important to note here is that the posts do not rigidly fall into one theme or the other. Every post has an overlap with one or more themes. The decision of placing them in a particular theme is based on the overall message communicated by the post and how closely it relates to one of the themes.

When the data elements extracted from the Netvizz output Cile were mapped against these different themes, the following analysis were developed:

1. Total number of posts per theme – This is the total number of posts in the life of the campaign, under different themes. Based on the frequency of the themes, this analysis helps determine which themes are of more importance to the NaMo campaign. (Refer Appendix 2, Table 6)

2. Engagement Level per theme – This analysis indicates which themes are more popular among the fans. It is important to note here that the Engagement levels have to be considered in relation to the number of posts for that particular theme. A higher engagement level for a theme does not automatically mean it is more popular, as in the case of ‘Election Agenda’. There were a massive 300 posts on this theme, and still it generated an engagement value of just 28851749. Whereas the theme of religious posts had just 76 posts, but it generated an engagement value of 11748449. Hence arithmetically, the religious posts were more popular than posts on election agenda. (Refer Appendix 2, Table 7)

The data obtained from Netvizz, can be analysed in different ways. But the above described methodology is speciCically picked with the sole focus of answering the 2 main research questions stated earlier.

Inferences Based on the data analysis methodology and the results listed above, following are the inferences that can be drawn for this study:

Inferences based on ‘Page Overview’ analysis (Reference Figure 14, 15)

1. The page activity during the campaign is deCinitely higher than either before or after the campaign period. But the data for ‘before the campaign’ also shows a signiCicantly large number of posts – almost 500 posts in about 250 days. This result indicates that even before being declared as the prime ministerial candidate, NaMo was a very active social media personality, who believed in building and maintaining his social brand.

2. The map showing the fan count further proves this point. Even before the campaign, NaMo was already a well-‐established brand on Facebook with close to 5 million fans (approximately).

3. The increase in the number of fans during and after the election campaign has been meteoric. Amassing 10 million fans by the time of his election victory is a huge achievement and indicates the rise in popularity amongst the Internet and urban population of India. This inference is made because the Internet accessibility, and in extension social media accessibility is still limited to metros and tier-‐1 and tier-‐2 cities in India. Internet penetration is yet to reach the rural section of the country.

Inferences based on ‘Post count’ analysis (Reference Table 1, 5 in Appendix 2 and Figures 16, 17)

1. The number of posts, each month have maintained a steady level overall. There are no drastic dips and rises in the post count over the months.

2. However, it is seen that the number of posts are higher at the starting and the ending phases of the campaign. A study of the corresponding engagement levels, are also high for these periods.

3. But in the middle parts of the campaign the engagement levels have dipped slightly, which team NaMo has noticed, and accordingly reduced the number of posts during this period. We infer this by studying the trends in the months of October and November 2013, where the number of posts in each month was

almost the same. But there is a clear dip in the engagement levels for the month of November. Noticing this dip in the engagement value, the number of posts was decreased slightly during December. This resulted in a better engagement level for that month.

4. But as the polls drew nearer (April 2014) there is an exponential increase in both the number and the engagement levels of the posts.

5. It is important to note here that for the month of May only 15 days of posts have been considered in this campaign period. Hence visually, though it may seem like a dip in the number of posts, there were close to 50 posts in just 15 days. This is a high number and ties in neatly with the increased activity seen in the latter part of the campaign.

6. Another point to note is that the engagement level of these 50 posts is far higher than the posts for the rest of the months in the campaign. Even the highest point of engagement level in the entire campaign history is achieved through a massive 100 posts in the month of April. But arithmetically, the most fruitful engagement has happened during the period of these 50 posts. This was the period when the election results were announced, and the heightened engagement indicates people wishing NaMo on his election success.

7. As indicated in Table 5 (Refer Appendix 2) -‐ of the top 5 posts in the campaign, 1 post belongs to the month of April, and 2 posts to the month of May (both related to NaMo’s victory in the election). Thus proving that the engagement level of the last 50 posts was far higher than the rest, and was related to te theme of election victory in particular.

Inferences based on ‘Post Type’ analysis (Reference Tables 2,3,4,5 in Appendix 2 and Figures 18,19,20,21,22)

1. This analysis shows that of the 3 types of posts -‐ the photo posts occupy the majority share, with status updates being a distant second, and the link based posts being almost at negligible level.

2. While the page itself seemed to prefer photo-‐based posts, it can be seen that they also experimented with the other two types of posts. The engagement level however for both were low.

3. Only 2 link-‐based posts have seen any engagement at all, and they were related to the theme of ‘Election Agenda’, which by itself is not a very popular theme (as seen in the next section).

4. In the case of status updates, the strongest post was based on the theme of ‘Religious Posts’, which has emerged to be one of the strongest themes of the page (as seen in the next section).

5. The low engagement level with the link and status based posts has been noticed by team NaMo and eventually as shown in Figure 19, they have gradually been phased out.

6. The engagement level per post type is largely dependent on the volume of posts. If there were more signiCicantly more number of link based or status based posts, would they have had better engagement? This is not clear through the study, and hence it cannot be inferred that the “type of posts” have any inCluence on the engagement value of a post.

7. Because the sheer volume of photo posts is high, the engagement level for these posts is shown as high. But this is not a sure indication of preference by the fans.

Inferences based on ‘Post Theme’ analysis (Reference Tables 6, 7, 8 in Appendix 2 and Figures 23, 24)

1. A study of the themes, at a Cirst glance reveals the sheer variety in content that the page carries. In a space of 9 months, close to 11 different themes are discussed on the page. This indicates that the page tries to cater to a variety of audience interests, likes and beliefs.

2. Close attention is paid to the content of the posts as each post has a clear message that it communicates.

3. There are 11 themes deCined in total, and as indicated in Figure 23, maximum number of the posts belongs to ‘Election Agenda’, followed by ‘Social Programs’ and ‘Rally Updates’.

4. Because of the sheer volume of posts, the engagement value of ‘Election Agenda’ theme reads higher. But a close study of Table 7 shows that the theme of ‘Religious Posts’ has fewer posts but its engagement value is higher. In fact in terms of engagement value it is second only to ‘Election Agenda’.

5. The next point to note here is that the high value of engagement for “election Agenda’ posts comes form the massive number of 300 posts. If compared arithmetically, the engagement value of ‘Religious Posts’ will come quite close in comparison to that of ‘Election Agenda’. Thus it is evident that the theme or content of a post determines the engagement it receives. Volume of posts does not determine traction.

6. Table 8 in Appendix 2 is the master sheet that contains the theme of every post in the campaign. A study of this table indicates that as the polls drew nearer, there was an increase in the ‘Election Agenda’ related posts. This is a natural occurrence, as the intent was to reinforce the agenda points that NaMo promoted throughout the campaign.

7. Another point to note here is that most of the ‘Rally Updates’ posts are immediately followed by posts on ‘Election Agenda’. Example reference shown below:

9. Every post on rallies followed this ritual. This indicates that NaMo did everything possible to disseminate the messages of the rallies to a larger diaspora, who may not have been present at the rallies.

10. Another important observations is that posts with ‘Celebrity Endorsements’ have a higher impact than election related posts, even though they are more in number. NaMo was good at sensing people’s afCiliations to different celebrities and in his tours across the country, he made sure he met the local / national celebrities of that part of India and promoted them on Facebook. This kind of a piggy-‐back tagging surely helped gain some followers on the page. For e.g the below post with Rajinikanth received close to 2 million “likes” and is the campaigns’ most successful post!

11. Posts based on religious themes of course were of the highest impact, as explained above. Most of the religious posts were connected with the Hindu religion, with a handful of posts connected to the Non-‐Hindu faiths. However, it is interesting to note that the most popular religious post is the one on Christmas.

Conclusion & Summary Through this study of web historiography we set out to answer 2 questions:

1. Did social media help in an image-‐makeover of NaMo, from being a right wing fundamentalist to a development-‐seeking secular leader?

2. Did the introduction of social media as a campaign tool inCluence NaMo’s victory in the elections, as most studies claim.

As discussed above, most of the popular posts are rarely related to the theme of ‘Election Agenda’. NaMo made efforts to speak to the fans in their language and on topics of their interests. This helped him create a positive public image for himself. Also, by consistently focusing on the shortcomings of the current government in his rallies and his posts, he played the sentiment of the public really well. Therefore through a combination of both online and ofCline efforts his image underwent a successful makeover.

The study of themes has also shown that most of the posts on the page were mainly the reClections of activities happening on-‐ground. There were hardly any social media speciCic activities on the page, except in the instances of an app launch and 3D rallies. There are also no indications of any viral posts or debates related to any of the election agenda points. This and the fact of low engagement values for election agenda posts, proves that social media did not have a major inCluence in helping NaMo win the election. The credit for that should go to the on-‐ground efforts taken by NaMo to travel the elength and breadth of the country. His ofCline statistics form a far more impressive reading than his online statistics -‐ travelled over 3,00,000 kms, held 5827 public meetings in 25 states in India, besides 1350 3-‐D rallies.

However the campaign ended on a happy note, with NaMo sweeping the elections and going on to becoming the next Prime Minister of India.
