Letterland ELT .......................................................... 44

Plain black letters have no faces! They cannot make eye-contact with children, or speak for themselves. So, as I tried to teach dry phonic facts to 5 to 8 year olds, I found myself sketching faces and bodies into those abstract, black shapes. My students did too. Then they playfully came up with reasons to explain why our little ‘humanized’ letters usually made very particular sounds in words! It was then that we discovered a new range of attention-holding strategies that, in the event, made teaching phonics more child-friendly! Our ‘story logic’ was making learning more like play in a language-rich setting! Even more exciting, their ideas were more effective! I didn’t expect the resulting Letterland phonics method would have so much teaching power, or the global appeal it now receives from children worldwide. I am so pleased that the new need to be able to teach all those little story reasons remotely is giving teachers more flexibility with Phonics Online (see p. 26), our web-based application that enables children to watch and learn from their Letterland friends in person wherever they are! A very versatile resource!

Academic Research

“We emphasize that the superiority of the [Letterland] integrated mnemonics group was in comparison to carefully matched alternative instruction

rather than [an] untreated control group.”Roberts, T. A., & Sadler, C.D. Letter sound characters and imaginary narratives: Can they enhance motivation and letter sound learning?

Early Childhood Research Quarterly (2018), doi.org/10.1016/j.ecresq.2018.04.002

Further examples of Research are available at: www.letterland.com/research.

Letterland Effect Sizes Compared to the Average of Prior Studies (Roberts & Sadler, 2018)

The use of characters and actions to teach phonics is supported by scientific research. The Letterland system is also in line with research on memory and the way we learn.

Each Letterland character has a personality and lives in a realistic environment filled with alliterative objects. By integrating phonics with life experience, they provide children with a systematic and motivating framework for learning all 44 sounds and their spellings and for developing full literacy.

* Effect Size quantifies the difference between two groups (0.8 = large; 0.5 = medium; 0.2 = small)** Piasta & Wagner, 2010: average effect size for preschool letter sound instruction (0.24).

A total of thirty-eight preschool children were randomly assigned one of two explicit teaching treatments to teach alphabet letter sounds over a 7-week period. One teaching treatment was Letterland (featuring integrated mnemonics and short narratives about the letter sound characters) and the other was the Control (using plain letters and alphabet books). There were significant treatment effects in favour of Letterland on identifying letter sounds (1.31), initial phoneme identification (0.61), phoneme blending (0.62) and letter writing (0.46). These treatment effects are significantly higher than the average of prior studies (0.24) (Piasta & Wagner, 2010).

works!”“It“An extremely well thought out programme that

is highly imaginative and distinctly memorable.”

Why Letterland?Letterland is a unique, phonics-based approach to teaching reading, writing and spelling for 3-8 year olds. Our award-winning educational resources can be used in school or at home. The Letterland characters transform plain black letter shapes into child-friendly pictograms and they all live in an imaginary place called Letterland.

Story-BasedLetterland teaches phonics through the use of simple stories. The story logic engages children leading to long-term retention of concepts.

Direct InstructionLetterland’s direct and systematic instruction gets children reading faster by increasing their accuracy in decoding and word recognition skills.

Research-BasedMuch research has been done to understand the way we learn. This analysis supports the use of characters and actions to teach phonics.

Cross-CurricularThe alliterative nature of learning with the Letterland characters lends itself to linking with other subject areas such as Art, PSHE, Science and Geography.

Correlates with the National CurriculumLetterland is validated by the Department for Education (DfE) in England as an effective systematic synthetic phonics programme (SSP).

MultisensoryLetterland activates every kinaesthetic and auditory learning channel. By using multiple teaching modalities Letterland works for all children!

How Does It Work?

5. GrammarTake the road to a better understanding of grammar with the new series - Letterland Grammar. Covering all the concepts children learn at school in Key Stage 1, this series uses clever analogies to explaingrammatical concepts.

1. Learn Letter SoundsOnce you have met the friendly Letterland characters, just start to say their names for the correct letter sound.

2. Learn Letter ShapesSimple stories about the Letterland characters ensure correct letter formation, avoiding confusion over similar looking letters.

3. Word BuildingBlending and segmenting all through words is introduced very early on, covering blends, digraphs and trigraphs.

4. SpellingCovering all the statutoryrequirements for Key Stage 1, Year 1 & 2, this series makes the ‘rules and regulations’ of spelling into a journey of discovery.

Fix-it Phonics Overview

Fix-it Phonics is an all-inclusive, step-by-step programme. It has four structured levels that help children to quickly master all the English letter shapes and sounds as well as reading, writing and communication skills.

Simplified language

Just 3-5 key words are taught for every sound. Stories are simplified to aid comprehension.

Topics

Topics such as colours/numbers/shapes are integrated into the programme and role-play forms part of those lessons to encourage oral communication.

Speaking & listening

The audio component is an essential resource for delivering the lessons in the Letterland Fix-it Phonics course. Pupils hear correct pronunciation models and follow the clear, friendly instructions throughout.

How does Fix-it Phonics differ from your non-ESL programmes? In Fix-it Phonics, the tried and tested Letterland principles have been specially adapted to help children learning English to develop language and vocabulary. Sounds and shapes are taught with all you need to consolidate learning in one place. Less teacher preparation time is needed as children work sequentially through the books with audio guidance and regular listening checks. Vocabulary is introduced gradually and the introduction of the phonic concepts is systematic, so learning English is fun and easy to remember.
