Southeastern Conference Drum Corps Mission The Southeastern Conference Drum Corps Ministry is proud to say that with the support of our
dedicated leaders, both at the Conference and church level, we have achieved a level of
organization never before seen within the conference. The drum ministry has come together to
not only unify the conference but also its true mission is to bring people closer to God through
music. We also strive to instill discipline and responsibility to our youth and to serve as a
platform for outreach within the community.
Note to Parents All parents play a key role in the Pathfinder Drum Corps ministry. Not only are you responsible
for the well-being of your child/children but you play a key role in their development as drum
corps players. There will be a physical demands placed on your child/children through the need
to carry instruments. This may require you to supporting your drum instructor in the
implementation of stamina and endurance building exercises for your kids. These exercises
should not be seen as punishment but as a way to ensure that your child/children do not
sustain injury due to the weight of various equipment.
Practice and consistency will fall on you, “the parent” partially because you will be responsible
for timely transportation and your children will take their cue from you. Being present at
practices and following through with practice at home is key to a successful player. Please
communicate with your instructor and pathfinder club director and make a plan to help keep
your child motivated as both a club member and a corps member.
Your monetary contribution plays a key role in the making of a successful drum corps. In
addition to the standard A-Class Pathfinder Uniform, you may be asked to purchase additional
drum Corps accessories for that uniform. You may also be asked to contribute monthly
monetary funds, (i.e. dues) to be used for your child’s essentials (for example practice sticks,
straps, tuning keys, etc.).
On a final note, the drum corps ministry will be introducing a scholastic style of teaching to your
pathfinder. This means they may be eligible for advancement if they play for a school band or
drum corps.
Thank you for all of your support and feel free to contact me with any questions at

Southeastern Conference will flow through the channels from the specialists, to the district instructors, and
then to the church instructors.
Role of District Drum Instructor The role of the District Instructor is to train and help keep church instructors up to par with conference rules
and regulations. Also, to help educate directors and local church instructors on drum activities. The district
instructor will also be responsible for making a district team and putting together any practices needed for
that team. They should remain in constant communication with the specialists. Further instructions will be
given to the District Instructors by the Specialists as needed.
Role of Church Drum Instructor The role of the Church Drum Instructor is to run practices with their local pathfinder club. Also to ensure
that church participation in community events are successful and meet the standards set by the
Southeastern Conference. They are responsible for teaching their local club the basic drum requirements
that will be laid out further on in this manual.

Drum Corps participation in Community Events and representing the Seventh-day Adventist
Pathfinder Organization
Drum corps must be currently registered with the Southeastern Conference prior to putting on a
Pathfinder uniform (Class A, B, C, D or E) and performing at any event. (Conference Sponsored or
Community Sponsored) We must uphold the standards of the Seventh-day Adventist church at all times.
When out in the community, we serve as a witness and our goal should be to recruit youth to join our
Pathfinder Clubs. Everything we do and say must represent Christ and lead others to the cross.

Drum Corps Mindset: Not everyone who wants to be a part of a drum corps but not everyone has what it takes to be in one.
Here are five (5) things to see if you measure up to what it takes:
1. Be dedicated to your craft- always have the eagerness to learn and help teach others who
aren’t picking it up as fast and being on time for scheduled practices.
2. Potential vs. Skill- Being in a drum corps, you are a team and you have to keep in mind that
you are only as good as your weakest link.
3. Acknowledging you will make mistakes as to prevent further mistakes. Understanding that
mistakes will happen and not letting them compound themselves into more mistakes is
critical to your mental health in drum corps.
4. Be confident- This does not mean being over confident or cocky, but rather conveying a sense
of comfort and ease in what you do. Your body language speaks volumes about how you feel,
so stand up straight, make eye contact, and go for it without fear.
5. Be Positive- Your attitude is just as important, if not more so, than your playing ability.
Nobody wants to be around a Debbie Downer. Be optimistic with correcting your own
problems. Tell people around you “Good Job”. Be upbeat and proactive when talking to the
other members. There are two types of people in the room. Those who bring the vibe up, and
those who bring it down. Those who can inspire confidence and bring out the best in the
people around them are the ones that others gravitate towards. Be the kind of person other
people want to be around for an entire practice.

Drum Equipment:
Snare
A percussion instrument that produces a sharp high pitch sound when the drum head
is struck due to the stiff snare wire attached under the drum held under high tension.
Usually played with drum sticks.
Tenor
A percussion instrument that produces a low pitch sound when struck. It is similar
in size to a snare drum, but without a snare attached to the bottom of the drum.
Usually played with mallets or hard sticks.
Quad
A percussion instrument with a four-drum configuration with a medium to high
pitch sound when struck and tuned for different intervals and accents. Usually
played with mallets or hard sticks.
Bass
A percussion instrument large in size that produces a deep low pitch in sound when
struck. It is played on both sides of the drum unlike the other instruments in a
percussion line. Usually played with large mallets.

Cymbal
A percussion instrument that produces a very high ringing pitch when crashed together and is usually played in a pair
Purchasing Equipment: When purchasing equipment such as drums for a drum corps, whether it be for an existing drum corps,
replacing an old drum corps, or starting a new drum corps, here are a few good practices and things to
look for…
1. Talk to other Pathfinder clubs and organize youth groups (i.e. high school bands, etc.)
2. Brand – A reputable brand will ensure good quality equipment and customer service in the event
of equipment failure.
3. Cost – Remember just because brand A cost less than brand B does not mean brand B is better.
4. When in doubt contact your District Drum Specialist, they will have the knowledge to assist you
and point you in the right direction
5. Bargain prices usually mean poor quality. If you can save a little while longer to buy Pearl,
Ludwig, Yamaha, or Premiere drums then that should assure you good quality equipment.
6. 5A and 7A are snare sticks used for drum set and concert performances while 2B and 5B are
used for marching ensemble (which our Pathfinder drum corps will be using). The difference
between A and B are that A’s are slimmer than B’s. Recommended brands include Vic Firth or
Pro mark.

7. Tenor mallets brands include Ludwig, Vic Firth with the straps are recommended for downright and
upright tenors.
8. Bass Mallets recommendations include Vic Firth, Ludwig, and Pro Mark.
9. Quad Mallets recommendations include Vic Firth Corps Master

10. Cymbals recommended 14” Zildjian, Sabians, or Yamaha brands. Bandanas or straps are
recommended.
11. Straps/Carriers recommended brands include Ludwig and Pearl:
These parade marching drum slings are used for the snare and/or tenor drums are designed to wear across
the body so that the drum rests upon the knee and the top of the drum at the hip.
Snare/Quad drum carriers are used to bear the weight of the snare on the shoulders and to keep
it upright for a more traditional carry vs corps style carry (for the snare).

Maintenance and Cleaning
Someone designated by the club director should keep regular maintenance and cleaning of all drum
corps equipment. This individual should have experience in cleaning and tuning drums. Extensive
damage can be done to the equipment if proper procedures are not followed. Please keep this in mind
when attempting to service your equipment. You don’t want to leave it to the last minute and find out
right before a performance that a drum/harness/strap/stick is broken, the drum is out of tune, or a
piece missing when it can be done beforehand.
Cleaning and Tuning the Top Head
Step Action
1. Loosen each tension rod with a drum key and take off the top head.
2. Pull the rim off the shell and wipe it down with some Windex.
3. Pull the head off the drum shelf and wipe down the top edge of the shelf (this is called the “bearing edge”).
4. Rub a little PARAFIN WAX on the bearing edge --just enough for a light coat. (The wax will help to make the head slide smoothly over the bearing edge as you tighten the head in the tuning process.)
Note Before you put the head back on the drum, give it a good inspection. Make sure that there are no cuts or small holes in the head.
5. Place the head on the drum lining the drum head “logo” (if there is one) up with the snare strainer.
6. Make sure that the bearing edge makes contact with the head completely around the drum.
Note If you have major problems putting the head on the shell, check to see if the head is warped (or “out of round”), by rolling it on the floor. If the head isn’t bad, then you might have problems with a warped shell.
Step Action
7. Set the counter on the head and line up the holes with the tension rod casings. Get close to make sure that they are EXACTLY LINED UP (You risk damaging the rods or
the casings if they are not).
Note Make sure that the rim makes contact with the head ALL THE WAY AROUND THE BEARING EDGE.
8. Make sure all tension rods are clean and rust free. Use a wire brush to remove any rust or grit. Before placing back on the drum, take the cleaned tension rods and dab
a little petroleum jelly and wipe off the excess.

Simple Percussion Vocabulary Double Stops – Both hands are playing at the same height
Block Height – Note accents are all the same height
Two Height – Width accents at two separate heights
Tacet hand – The hand that is not playing
Full Stroke – A stroke that starts up and ends up
Down Stroke – A stroke that starts up and ends down
Up Stroke – A stroke that starts down and ends up
Using the Metronome A great way to check your timing is to practice with a metronome. Once you build muscle
memory with it, you can always adjust your timing to achieve the musical effect you’re looking
for. But as a foundation you should practice playing slower at first and gradually build up to 120
beats per minute (bpm). Which is the standard tempo for marching. You don’t want to get ahead
of yourself and play so fast so that the Pathfinders in formation are sprinting trying to keep up
with the tempo, nor do you want to play it so slow that everyone is dragging their feet. The speed
of the formation/parade mainly lies on you as the drum corp.
Rudiments and Conference Cadences:
Rudiment:
A sticking pattern which forms the foundation for more extended and complex drum patterns
which gradually builds up speed and complexity through time and practice. Here are 40
fundamental rudiments.

rhythm, beat, and set tempo.

Hand commands for universal playing Hand and arm signals or silent commands are an essential asset to have for every Drum Corp.
Reason being, different locations will vary in crowd volume and noise levels from each instrument
according to the different venues. With instruments and crowd volume it may be difficult to hear
what commands are being instructed. The use of hand and arm signals is simply a visual aid so
messages and commands can be transmitted without sound.
CONTINUE PLAYING - When this silent command is given the individual will show their left
and right hand moving in a circular motion with each one overlapping one another to signal to
the percussionists to “continue playing”.
FROM THE TOP - When this silent command is given the individual will place their left or
right hand flat and horizontal directly above or on top of their head with no more than a 6 inch
gap between their head and hand. This is to signal the percussionists to start the beat or cadence
“from the top” or beginning.
STOP PLAYING - When this silent command is given it will have a preparatory command and
a command of execution. The preparatory command will be shown by the individual raising their
left or right arm directly in the air with their hands closed in a fist. This signals the percussionists
to be prepared to “stop playing”. The command of execution will be shown when the individual
drops their hand straight down signaling that the beat or cadence has ended.
