From the
Director’s CLIpboardMost people have seen the movie Elf from 2003, starring
Will Ferrell (‘Old School’ alum) as Buddy the elf, James Caan (the O.G. Sonny Corleone) as Walter Hobbs, and Zooey Deschanel (New Girl) as Jovie. Of those people I know who have viewed the original classic holiday film, most of them have made it a yearly tradition to include it in their family Christmas movie watchlist. My kids and myself included.
When I heard Community Players was producing Elf the Musical, AND inviting a guest to direct it, my interest was definitely piqued. At first, I couldn’t imagine the story of Buddy the elf getting any better than what the world has already come to know and love, and then I listened to the soundtrack. On repeat…nonstop. This script, score, cast, and crew go above and beyond what I could have hoped for in my first Main Stage directorial debut. I have continuously been blown away by the tenacity, talent, and dedication of our volunteers, board members, and staff to quickly pull together a spectacular production for you and your family’s holiday entertainment.
My hope is that each of you falls in love with this musical as much as we have, and go home singing these songs the rest of this Christmas season and into the New Year.
Movie or musical, the story of Buddy the elf shows us that family and friends are the reasons for every season. Buddy’s childlike way of operating reminds us that being silly and enjoying the simple things in life (including all the sugar) are some of the most important things year-round, especially at Christmas. We get to see him join and unite his newfound family, and watch unsuspecting peoples’ hearts grow at least 3 sizes...wink wink.
Young and old alike, snuggle in- maybe with a little fluffernutter, all the chocolate topped off with some syrup, and let yourself fall in love with Buddy, Jovie, the Hobbs family, and friends all over again. Thank you for being here- Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
