HARMONY DAY ‘EVERYONE BELONGS’

We will celebrate Harmony Day next week on Tuesday 5 April. This day which is celebrated world-wide provides an opportunity for all Australians to: • Say “no” to racism • Celebrate our many successes as a diverse,

harmonious multicultural society • Re-commit to our common values of

respect and goodwill towards fellow Australians from all cultural backgrounds.

This year in Australia there is a special theme for Harmony Day. It is “Diversity is our Strength.”

Opportunities for All

On Tuesday 5 April all students are invited to wear a national costume, a community, sport or organisation uniform – (scouts, guides, rangers,) their favourite sport’s team colours or something orange – (the designated harmony day colour) to show support for the values of Harmony Day. Two special “Harmony Day” certificates will be given in each class to two students who demonstrate respect and goodwill at all times. These will be presented at a small informal assembly on Tuesday 5 April, just before recess. Throughout the week special orange “Eppies” designed by the SRC will also be given out. On Tuesday, we will also be acknowledging “The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence”. This annual day provides a focus for all schools to say “Bullying No Way!” and to strengthen their existing message that bullying and violence are never justified. Please remember to continue to bring in canned food for the Exodus Foundation. This is our school’s way of supporting those people less fortunate in our community. Please join in, celebrate and have fun on Tuesday, 5 April.

TOGETHER, WE ‘CAN' MAKE A DIFFERENCE ON HARMONY DAY.

Mrs Parker, Mrs Rowsell & Mrs Galilee The “EALD” team

ANZAC DAY ASSEMBLY Next Wednesday 6 April we will be holding our ANZAC Assembly at the ANZAC memorial wall and garden (weather permitting, otherwise it will be in the Hall). It will commence at 10am and all members of our school community are invited. If you would like to bring flowers to place at our memorial wall during the service, that would be

appreciated. Flowers can be taken to your classroom. Thank you in advance, Mrs Christine Croker

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE 2016 Children from Years 3 to 6 can add The Peasant Prince by Li Cunxin, ID Number 7159, to their Student Reading Record for the 2016 Premier’s Reading Challenge, as I read it to them last week in preparation of our excursion in late April. There will be no library lessons next week due to staff planning days. Because of this children will borrow four books this week to tide them over the holidays. Mrs Lyn Campbell Teacher-Librarian

EARTH HOUR AT EPS 2016 Some comments from our students: We can plant a garden and share the food. Jaden, Oliver and Mayla KC Everyone should be encouraged to turn off their class lights to save electricity. It burns fossil fuel. Nicholas and Hargun 4L

Thank you to Charissa (6/5G) Esha (6M) and Zainab (1TD) for their fantastic posters promoting care for the environment. They are on display in the office area.

READING AT HOME Reading is a very useful skill to have in our modern world. Reading with your child at home will help them in all learning areas at school. It is important to listen to your child read as often as you can, every day if possible, even if only for a short time. Here are some hints for listening to your child read at home: • Before reading, talk about the cover, the

title, the pictures, and discuss what the book may be about.

• During reading, discuss what has been read up to that point, and imagine what will happen next time.

• After reading is finished, talk and ask questions about the story and the pictures.

• When reading a harder book together, take turns. Beginning readers can read the

Opportunities for All

repetitive parts and more experienced readers can read a paragraph or a page.

• On finding an unknown word use the Three P’s technique:

Pause to give your child time to work out the word Prompt – go back to the beginning of the sentence, or read past the difficult word to the end of the sentence. – look for a clue in the picture or the words – look at the first letter and think about what the words could be – ask “Does this make sense?” – try to sound out the word – if necessary tell your child the word Praise your child for trying even if mistakes are made. CANTEEN New Canteen Coordinators The Canteen Committee would like to announce that several wonderful parents have stepped forward into coordinator roles! Starting from Term 2, Mina Jung and Julia Park will be our new Friday coordinators, and Coco Huang will join Lillian Wang as our Wednesday coordinators. Thank you to these lovely parents for offering to train up into these volunteer roles and to help continue the smooth operation of our school canteen. We would also like to acknowledge with much gratitude the contributions of Janice Ma, Stephanie Chung and Wendy Lam, who have worked tirelessly in canteen coordination and support roles for more than two years. We thank our outgoing coordinators for their generous commitment of time and effort, and for creating such a friendly and supportive environment for our team of volunteers. And finally, but not least, to the many volunteer mums that have helped this term working in the canteen, collecting sushi, delivering fresh groceries and assisting at the Easter morning tea - THANK YOU! We could not exist without you all. A canteen roster for Term 2 will be sent out shortly. For anyone wanting information about volunteering in the school canteen, please feel free to contact Deb Walker, the new Canteen Roster & Communications Coordinator at [email protected].

SCIENCE SHOW Well the Amazing Science Show proved to be just that AMAZING! The kids arrived full of expectations and excitement. They were entertained by Fizzics Education’s scientist Nina. The kids were wowed with Rubens Tube flame dancing to the tunes of music, the shooting of smoke rings and fire balls. And yes, toilet paper can fly. An event like this cannot happen without help from parents. Firstly a special thank you to Marissa Kelly for handling the BBQ and cooking 240 sausages and onions with her dad Michael, along with Sarah O’Neil and Xiemena Oyarce. Thank you to Stephanie Chung who took charge in the canteen and sorted out the flow of organising the serving of the sausage rolls to the hungry 240 children. Thank you also to the following people helped on the night; Glorya Williams, Leonie Eldridge, Patti Tse, Fiona Kim, Wendy Lam, Sarah Lee, Angeline Soo, Jacqui Pitcher, Ran He, Smita Sant, Shilpa Manmothe, Aditi Sethi, Purvi Avlani, Anne Mount, Lisa Denniss, Sue Bailey, Constanza Hanich. If your name was missed we apologise. Your help was greatly appreciated. Thank you to Coles Epping for contributing $100 towards sausages and to Epping Bakery for discounting the bread rolls. Thank you to EBASCA who enabled us to use the hall for the duration of our event and also

Opportunities for All

organised the children participating from EBASCA so beautifully. Lastly, thank to the children who attended. The children behaved so well throughout the show and showed patience waiting for their sausage. Our Amazing Science Show raised $1708.00 for our school. Janine Eastham Science Show Coordinator
