There she finds work on an organic farm, alongside other dropouts from the rat race. But is the farm community really free of modern society’s corruptions? How long can a non-conformist like Fanni fit in anywhere? A longtime assistant director to Ulrich Seidl, Daniel Hoesl creates a visionary debut, offering a cultural critique with puckish wit and crisp style. German electro balladeer Bettina Köster makes key contributions on the soundtrack. Tiger Award, 2013 Rotterdam Film Festival; Official Selection, 2013 Sundance, New Directors/New Films. DIR/SCR Daniel Hoesl; PROD Katharina Posch. Austria, 2013, color, 80 min. In German and French with English subtitles. NOT RATED L

With neither a map nor much of a clue, these modern-day pirates have taken to randomly using explosives in hopes of striking gold, long rumored to have been buried in the vicinity by a 19th century pirate. But when a developer announces plans to construct a mega-resort on their treasure-hunting turf, these vagabonds’ way of life is threatened. Official Selection, 2013 HotDocs Film Festival. CROATIA THE PRIEST’S CHILDREN [Svecenikova djeca] Sat, Dec 7, 3:15; Sun, Dec 8, 8:00A young Catholic priest takes subversive action to enforce the church’s position on birth control among his flock, and soon has a baby boom on his hands in Vinko Bresan’s acerbic satire, adapted from the scandalously popular stage play by Mate Matisic. New priest Father Fabijan (Kresimir Mikic) takes charge of the parish on the bucolic Adriatic island of Dnevnik, a location that has seen its population steadily dwindle. After hearing confession from a devout kiosk vendor racked with guilt over selling condoms, Father Fabijan hits upon a solution to both their problems: pierce the prophylactics. Once they enlist a kooky nationalistic pharmacist in their efforts, who fills the local women’s prescriptions for birth control pills with placebos, pregnancies skyrocket, and the island gains a reputation as a fertility spa. But all this playing God brings unintended consequences. Official Selection, 2013 Chicago, Karlovy Vary Film Festivals. DIR/SCR Vinko Bresan; SCR Mate Matisic, from his play; PROD Ivan Maloca. But sparks fly after a chance encounter in the elevator with new arrival Jakov (Polic ), and suddenly these two oldsters are yearning for freedom. Gauthier Valence (Lambert Wilson – OF GODS AND MEN) has become rich and famous playing a heroic brain surgeon on TV, but longs to return to the stage. Seeking out reclusive stage legend Serge Tanneur (Luchini) on the rainswept Ile de Ré, Valence pitches the prickly thespian on his passion project: a staging of Molière’s “The Misanthrope,” with the two actors trading off the parts of the disruptive, pessimistic Alceste and the kind-hearted, conciliatory Philinte nightly. Tanneur, a maniac for Molière, cautiously agrees to rehearse with Valence, and the two embark on a week of wildly inventive, occasionally confrontational creative work. GREECE THE DAUGHTER [I kori] Sun, Dec 8, 7:40; Thu, Dec 12, 9:20Fourteen-year-old Myrto is angry. Her father, recently bankrupted by the Greek economic crisis, hasn’t been seen in days. She kidnaps the 8-year-old son of her father’s business partner, whom she blames for their troubles. At first, her means of torture are merely pedantic, as she reads words from the dictionary to the clueless boy (“debt,” “responsibility,” “dissolution”). But things soon turn sinister. Filmmaker Thanos Anastopoulos displays exquisite control, turning what could have been a ripped-from-the-headlines thriller into a probing psychological exploration, recalling early Michael Haneke and even Greek tragedy. Official Selection, 2013 Berlin, Toronto Film Festivals. DIR/SCR/PROD Thanos Anastopoulos; SCR Vasilis Giatsis; PROD Stella Theodoraki. Greece/Italy, 2012, color, 97 min. GOLTZIUS AND THE PELICAN COMPANY Sat, Dec 14, 3:00; Mon, Dec 16, 7:10Following his offbeat and magnificent portraits of Rembrandt in NIGHTWATCHING and REMBRANDT’S J’ACCUSE, eminent provocateur Peter Greenaway continues his obsession with old Dutch masters, here staging a scene from the life of engraver Hendrick Goltzius. Goltzius (Ramsey Nasr) and his theatrical troupe, the Pelican Company, come to the palace of the Margrave of Alsace (F. Murray Abraham) in Colmar, seeking the nobleman’s patronage in order to purchase a printing press. Reputedly a man of high moral standing, it’s an open secret that the Margrave’s tastes run to the lascivious, and thus the troupe’s audition involves staging scenes from the Bible in wildly imaginative, erotically charged tableaux vivant—ostensibly as cautionary tales, but self-evidently as titillating entertainment. Visually stunning, thoroughly ribald and genuinely stimulating—on any number of levels—Greenaway’s opus on art and eroticism, on taboo making and breaking, is a must-see for lovers of art and art history. PORTUGAL A WOMAN’S REVENGE [A Vingança de Uma Mulher] Mon, Dec 9, 9:40; Wed, Dec 11, 9:10Rita Azevedo Gomes adapts one of the juiciest stories from Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly’s scandalous 1874 collection “Les Diaboliques” (the same author’s 1851 novel “Une Vieille Maîtresse” was recently adapted by Catherine Breillat), in this handsomely conceived, provocative period drama, reminiscent of recent work by Manoel de Oliveira for its self-conscious theatricality, and Raúl Ruiz (MYSTERIES OF LISBON) for its delight in stories-within-stories. So when a funny old man named Kris Kringle shows up for the job—insisting he's the real Santa Claus—O'Hara humors the old guy and hires him. One of Danny Kaye’s best-loved films, THE COURT JESTER was, at the time of its release, the most expensive screen comedy to date—and a box office flop. But over the years it became a television matinee staple, delighting multiple generations with its witty wordplay, and Kaye and company’s spoofy tomfoolery with the swashbuckler’s well-worn genre conventions. With Basil Rathbone, Angela Lansbury, Glynis Johns, Cecil Parker, Mildred Natwick and John Carradine. DIR/SCR/PROD Melvin Frank, Norman Panama. US, 1956, color, 101 min. NOT RATED

Gifted song-and-dance man Danny Kaye stars as Andersen, a small-town cobbler and storyteller who heads to Copenhagen to make it as a big-time writer. There he falls for a ballerina (Zizi Jeanmaire), inspires ballets, and of course spins a few yarns for the local children. Dear AFI Silver Patrons:

2013 marked both our 10th anniversary as the AFI Silver Theatre and the 75th anniversary of the historic Silver. As we enter into a new decade, we have continued to evolve as a cultural institution, and this year was marked by an evolution in technology. We have expanded our capabilities to include 4K Digital Cinema and Dolby 3D. And please note, I say expand.

Celebrating the historic Silver Theatre’s 75th anniversary this past September was an extraordinary and fun event for AFI Silver and the Silver Spring community. I’d like to personally thank our Advisory Council members — William Brakefield, Karen DeFrancis, Sara Dent, Peter Edwards, John King, Catherine Leggett, Theodore Pedas, Brian Tracey and Norman Understein — and the event sponsors — Corcoran Caterers, Inc., Costco and WJLA/News Channel 8 and Mr. Arch Campbell — for making AFI Silver Theatre’s free reprisal of the Silver’s inaugural presentation of FOUR DAUGHTERS a successful event. We came together to honor the individuals who were vital to the restoration of the Silver Theatre and remembered the significance this theater had for its community back in 1938, and for many years to come. We’ve been encouraging the community to share their “Silver Memories,” expressing what the Theatre means to them, and they have been pouring in over the past few months. If you have not done so already, I encourage you to submit your memories to [email protected] to continue the celebration.

Of course what is most important is what we put on our screens, and over the last year we’ve had a diverse, enlightening and enjoyable lineup with some of the highlights including: director Joe Wright with ANNA KARENINA; the Alloy Orchestra providing musical accompaniment for UNDERWORLD, THE LAST COMMAND, THE OVERCOAT and MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA; plus Washington premieres of new African, Caribbean, European and Latin films; and for the true denizens of the DMV, Henry Rollins with THE LEGEND OF COOL “DISCO” DAN, Jeff Krulik’s LED ZEPPLIN PLAYED HERE and of course Count Gore De Vol.

We are very grateful for the support of many individuals, companies and foundations, and for the support of Montgomery County and the State of Maryland, who make AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center a reality. I extend my thanks to the thousands of people that make up our audiences and support our ongoing efforts to preserve and honor the art of film and the film-going experience.

Best wishes,

Director, AFI Silver Theatre & Cultural Center

Kevin Smith PresentsAMERICAN MILKSHAKE Sat, Nov 30, 9:30In person: filmmakers David Andalman and Mariko Munro1995. Takoma Park, Maryland. Teenager Jolie (Tyler Ross) is a magnet student who wishes he had more street cred. He wants an edge, like the gangsta crowd from Maple Avenue, or Henrietta (Shareeka Epps, HALF NELSON), whom he tutors, and is secretly his girlfriend—and not-so-secretly pregnant with another man’s baby. Jolie tries out for the basketball team, hoping it will bring him closer to being something he is not: black. The debut feature from Takoma Park native David Andalman premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and features a breakthrough performance from newcomer Ross in addition to many locations—and a few faces—familiar to area residents. But now the disease could no longer be ignored. Picking up the camera and turning it on his declining body, Jason set out on a worldwide journey in search of healing, self-discovery and love. An emotional documentary filled with unexpected moments of humor and joy, this is a life-affirming film driven by a young man’s determination to survive—and to make sense of a devastating disease through the art of cinema. Filmmaking brothers Joshua and Benny Safdie (known for their indie features THE PLEASURE OF BEING ROBBED and DADDY LONG LEGS) pick up the long-discarded footage shot by producer Adam Shopkorn and set out to track the unfulfilled destiny of a man for whom superstardom was only just out of reach.
