As the community and industries in Elandsfontein, Klopper Park, Tunney, Isando and Meadowdale continue to grow, so has the need for a new fi re station.
This will soon become a reality as work has begun on the Klopper Park Fire Station, following a rain-soaked soil-turning ceremony, last Friday.
“The new station will accommodate fi re engines and ambulances,” explained William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS).
“This station will greatly assist in cutting the response time to the area, which is seen as high risk.
“At present, emergencies in the area are attended to by personnel from either the Primrose, Kempton Park or Edenvale fi re stations.”
It is estimated that construction will take 21 months and will be completed in phases.
Ward 92 Clr Tiziana Plaskitt was on hand to welcome guests to the soil-turning.
“It is said that rain is a blessing,” Plaskitt said.
“Let us hope that it washes away the negativity and brings in the positivity.
“We have had a lot of hiccups with this project. I hope the rain will wash away all the problems so we can get the fi rst phase of the station up and running and servicing the community.”
MMC for Community Safety Clr Vivian Chauke then took to the podium to explain more about the project, on behalf of the mayor, Clr Mzwandile Masina.
“Since 2016, two fi re stations have been opened, namely the Thokoza Fire Station and Germiston Fire Station,” Chauke said.
“To provide further and adequate services to our residents, we will turn the soil on a new fi re station here in Klopper Park.
“The industrial area the new station will service is a highly developed area and is deemed a major risk area due to various chemical factories, warehouses and similar
enterprises. “For other fi re stations to
respond to emergencies in the area takes a long time due to the geographical division.”
She also commented that the Elandsfontein, Klopper Park, Tunney, Isando and Meadowdale areas have developed at a rapid pace and continue to grow.
“In addition, the station’s location will also allow personnel to respond to motor vehicle collisions on both the R21 and N12 highways,” Chauke said.
“The community of Klopper Park will also benefi t from the rapid response to emergencies.”
The project will cost an estimated R32-million.
“The completion of the project will leave Ekurhuleni far better off and it is with pride that I, on behalf of mayor Masina, turn the fi rst soil on the construction of the fi re station,” Chauke said.
Together with Izak Berg (chairperson for the oversight committee for community safety), Chauke made her way out into the rain to offi cially open construction on the project.
“We really are looking forward in having this additional resource at our disposal,” said Ntladi.

Man allegedly steals ex-girlfriend’s clothes
CRIME IN BRIEF
Primrose police recently arrested a 29-year-old man on a charge of house break-in and theft.
The arrest was made in the Makause informal settlement after the complainant opened a case against the accused.
“The complainant, the suspect’s ex-girlfriend, told police that she went to his house to collect her clothes,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications offi cer for the Primrose police.
“When she arrived he allegedly told her to wait outside while he went to collect her belongings.
“After waiting a long time she decided to leave and go home.”
When she arrived home she discovered her shack had been broken into.
“She claimed her cellphone, several pairs of shoes and clothing were missing from the shack,” said Maome.
“When she asked her aunt what had happened, she was allegedly told that her ex-boyfriend had come out of the shack carrying a bag.”
Offi cers were able to trace and arrest the man.
He has since appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court, where his case was postponed for plea and trial.
Offi cers from the Katlehong Police Station hosted several crime prevention operations in their precinct last weekend.
The operations, conducted by members of the Katlehong SAPS Crime Prevention Unit and detectives from the Katlehong Police Station, were held between April 5 and 7 and led to the arrest of 12 suspects.
The accused were charged with different offences.
Charges included common assault, pointing a fi rearm, malicious damage to property, contravening a court order, robbery, possession of drugs and driving under the infl uence of alcohol.
All of the arrested suspects appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court where their cases were postponed for various reasons.
Katlehong SAPS acting station commander Col Doctor Sibuyi once again appealed to the community to come forward and report crimes as soon as they happen.

All offi cers resumed work in their new roles on April 1.

Healthcare workers who go beyond the call of duty were honoured at this year’s Gauteng Health Khanyisa Service Excellence Awards.
Esteemed guest Gauteng MEC for Health Dr Gwen Ramokgopa joined health professionals from across Gauteng at Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre for the awards last Friday.
The aim of the awards is to recognise health practitioners who introduce changes or programmes set to benefi t their patients, in the various clinics or hospitals in the province.
The awards feature various categories, including most effi cient healthcare facility, community healthcare, best mental health review board and quality improvement innovation projects.
The Occupational Health Department at Bertha Gxowa Hospital won two awards at the prestigious event.
They accepted the Best-Improved Patient Safety Unit Award under the quality improvement and innovation projects category, for their Early Childhood Intervention Programme.
“This is a project close to my heart because I have grown with it over the years and worked on its development from the early stages,” said Humaira Khan, an occupational therapist at Bertha Gxowa Hospital.
“The Early Childhood Intervention Programme was started in late 2014 and I joined the hospital in 2015, and it’s been a pleasure growing and developing this project.
“We target mothers and their babies as soon as they are born and our aim is to prevent disabilities and development issues.”
The team makes an impact at the hospital with the programme by organising health talks in the hospital’s maternity ward and educating mothers on what to
expect concerning their baby’s development.
“By targeting the babies during infancy, we are able to detect issues at an early stage and are able to prevent further complications should a disability or development issue be detected,” said Humaira.
“During our talks with mothers, we book them for a three-month check-up should we suspect that a baby is at risk of having a development problem.
“These educational talks have been benefi cial because they’ve helped us identify children and parents who need our help.
“Together we can work together in bettering the lives of the children.”
The second award received
was for their Cerebral Palsy Rehabilitation and Support Groups Outreach Project.
“We started the project in 2016 when we were short-staffed and were receiving high volumes of
referrals of children with cerebral palsy,” said Humaira.
“We had to manage the numbers so we sought help from our colleagues in various departments and ensured our project includes
services from dieticians, social workers, occupational, speech and physiotherapists.
“It was a pilot project at the time, so we faced many trials.
“Based on the feedback we received from the parents at the end of the year we developed the programme even further.”
Later in the project, Humaira and her team found a number of mothers were not coping with their children being diagnosed with cerebral palsy and so the services of psychologists were introduced.
“The moms have an hour with the doctor, no babies are included in these sessions, and the aim is for them to deal with their emotions and mental health,” she said.
“During this time we keep the
babies preoccupied with physio and speech stimulation.”
The Cerebral Palsy Rehabilitation and Support Groups Outreach Project is for children from birth to fi ve years and 11 months old.
Once they are over the age of six, they are referred to stimulation centres which can cater to their needs at that age and older.
“Through each project’s errors we have found that with consistency we are able to generate results and implement changes that work,” said Humaira.
“We also celebrate small milestones because it’s all the small things that will add up to the progress of each child in the end.”

The Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) fi refi ghters, from Germiston and Boksburg Central fi re stations, responded to a multiple shack fi re in the Goodhope informal settlement, recently.
This was the third shack fi re
in recent weeks, with 17 shacks burning to the ground in the Makause informal settlement on March 23, while another 45 shacks were destroyed in a fi re in the Delmore informal settlement on March 29.
“At around 2pm fi refi ghters were
called to the Goodhope informal settlement,” explained William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.
“On arrival, just six minutes after receiving the call, the team found fi ve shacks engulfed in fl ames.
“A primary fi re attack was
initiated and the fl ames were contained and extinguished without further damage to other structures.
“No casualties were recorded on scene due to the fi re.”
However, the families whose shacks had been destroyed were left with nothing.
“Disaster management’s intervention team was brought in to assist and offer disaster and humanitarian assistance to those affected by the blaze,” said Ntladi.
The cause of the fi re is still unknown and is being investigated by local authorities.

Music lovers promised an audio treatFollowing the success of his EP titled Fortumatics, released in 2017, FFortune is set to release his fi rst studio album later this year.
The Primrose resident, real name Mahlatse Ramatladi, gained traction on social media when two songs from Fortumatics blew up.
Baby Fill Up and Thought I Told Ya, were on heavy rotation on music channels such as Channel O, Trace and MTV Base.
The popularity did not stop there. FFortune discovered that his music was appreciated countrywide and was also gaining supporter in the rest of Africa.
“Receiving messages from people in Sierra Leone and parts of West Africa was exciting,” said FFortune.
“I realised that fusing Afro beats in my sound resonated with more people than I had ever anticipated.”
After a few failed ventures with promoters FFortune took matters into his own hands.
“Dropping out of varsity to pursue this music career reminded me that I constantly had to work harder than my peers,” he said.
“I started organising and coordinating my own shows.
“This meant I could get paid for performing. To my surprise, that strategy worked.”
Over the past two years, FFortune has launched successful music shows, in Tzaneen, his home town, and one in Johannesburg.
“The show back home is called The Fortumatics Show and the Johannesburg one is called South Side Juice.
“With these two shows, my clothing brand OTC and our production company, I am able to sustain myself.”
FFortune’s studio album will be a double disc, offering various musical elements, including trap, R&B, dance hall and West Africa-inspired Afro beats, all fused into an audio treat for listeners.
“The album will be titled Josephine. That’s my mother’s name,” said FFortune.
“She’s always supported my dream and constantly urged me to pursue it fully if
that’s what made me happy and I think she would be proud of me had she been alive today.”
Josephine will feature a number of producers, such as Marlo The Wicked Producer and a producer from Sierra Leone, to name a few.
The self-taught marketer has also used social media platforms to gain continental support, which he believes will be a benefi t in the future.

I have referred RAJESH & MAMA AISHA to many people & she has delivered results for them within a few days, She can help you too!
ily I saw two testimonials on a local T.V station by an OLD MAN whose son RAJESH & MAMA AISHA had saved from DRUG and ALCOHOL abuse and a DIVORCED LADY RAJESH &
MAMA AISHA had RE- UNITED with her EX HUSBAND after 9 years. I paid R200.00 CONSULTATION FEE and RAJESH &
MAMA AISHA ACCURATELY Read MY FORTUNE and told me all my problems before I spoke a word to her. She used a mirror
to SHOW ME THE FACE OF THE PEOPLE who were trying to pull me down. She performed a 1 day special prayer for me,
cleansed me from bad luck and also gave me powerful love crystals, Indian ash plus a special ring to fi x my fi nancial

they prayed for a divorced lady who was united with her ex-husband aft er 9 year of divorce and the old man’s son who was also saved
from drugs, I paid R200 consultation fee and JEFF AND MAMA SHAN accurately read my fortune and told me all my problems

As one of the best-selling vehicles within the South African market, the Ford Ranger is important from a
local automotive perspective, as it is the best-selling double cab bakkie, after all.
The fact that the Ranger, its Everest sibling and the soon-to-be-introduced Ranger Raptor are all built at Ford’s Silverton Plant near Pretoria, clearly illustrates how relevant these products are to South Africa.
I travelled down to George along the Garden Route recently to sample the updated Ranger line-up.Exterior and interior updates
From an interior and exterior perspec-tive, very little has changed. On the XLT model, there’s a new front grille along with a reshaped lower bumper for the XL and XLS derivatives.
The ever-popular Wildtrak meanwhile now comes with HID headlamps and daytime running LEDs, additional
cooling vents, a new lower bumper and redesigned fog lamp surrounds
Inside, the changes are even less dramatic with more black inserts to create what Ford calls an “Ebony Black environment”. The Wildtrak’s interior updates are a bit more pronounced with all-black seats replacing the previous grey and orange items, along with dark-satin chrome elements.
Top-spec models (XLT and Wildtrak) also receive the brand’s SYNC 3 op-erating system and the carried-over eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, while XLS models get the more basic SYNC 1 system, which is optional on the XL.
Overall, the changes are very minor as only current owners and diehard fans will note the difference. That being said, the Ranger was updated some four years ago and still appears fresh amongst the current crop of bakkies.
Changes under the skinThe real reason for the launch was
to demonstrate the updates made underneath the skin and indeed, in terms of specifi cation. The real headline is a pair of new EcoBlue turbodiesel engines, both mated to a new 10-speed automatic gearbox.
The fi rst of the new engines is a single turbo displacing 2.0-litres and available on the double cab XLT 4x4. The motor produces 132 kW and 420 N.m of torque. Having sampled this drivetrain at launch, I feel that it is the combination that best suits the Ranger.
Next-up is the same motor but with the addition of a second turbocharger that pumps out 157 kW and 500 N.m. Essentially the same mill that will power the Raptor, this unit is only available on the Wildtrak 4x2 and 4x4 variants, and replaces the 3.2-litre fi ve-cylinder as the
new fl agship engine option.Having sampled this at launch, the
10-speed gearbox, co-developed with General Motors, offers seamless shifts and works very well with the punchy twin-turbo motor.
The current 2.2-litre four-cylinder mo-tors and the aforementioned fi ve-cylinder that continues to produce 147kW and 470 N.m, are still be available in various double cab, super cab and single cab Ranger confi gurations, along with the familiar fi ve-and-speed manual ‘boxes, as well as the optional six-speed automatic.
Other important changes include a rather noticeable improvement in the ride quality thanks to the relocation of the front anti-roll bar from the front of the suspension to behind the axle.
The damper settings have also been revised to include four new damper rates, each for different front kerb weights, meaning that the damping is more suited to the application. In addition to this, standard tyre pressure
has been reduced from the previously recommended 2.4 bar to 2.1 bar, im-proving ride quality further.
Those with towing requirements will be happy to hear that all models above the XL have a braked towing capacity of 3 500kg. The tailgate has also been made easier to lift and lower thanks to the fi tment of a torsion rod which reduces operator effort by a claimed 70%. It really is a great solution with most being able to close the tailgate using only one fi nger.
The Ranger was the first bakkie within the local market to introduce adaptive cruise control a few years back. Now, the top-spec Wildtrak gets the semi-automatic Park Assist System along with the familiar Lane Keeping Alert, Lane Keeping Aid and Auto High Beam Control.Verdict
While the changes made to the Rang-er line-up as a whole are very minor, the updates made to the higher-spec double cab models have ensured that the Ranger is exceptionally competitive within the lifestyle double cab bakkie segment.Service plan and warranty
All models come standard with a four-year/120 000 km warranty as well as a six-year/90 000 km service plan.Pricing
As a result of the local Ranger line-up consisting of 33 derivatives, only pricing for the double cab has been included. Pricing for the single and super cab can be seen on www.autodealer.co.za.2.2 TDCi base R350 0002.2 TDCi XL R409 900 2.2 TDCi XL 4x4 R455 300 2.2 TDCi XL AT R428 800 2.2 TDCi XL 4x4 AT R474 7002.2 TDCi XLS R455 100 2.2 TDCi XLS 4x4 AT R508 400 3.2 TDCi XLT R542 600 3.2 TDCi XLT 4x4 R604 800 3.2 TDCi XLT AT R571 4003.2 TDCi XLT 4x4 AT R617 3003.2 TDCi Wildtrak AT R609 8002.0 EcoBlue XLT AT R514 3002.0 EcoBlue XLT 4x4 AT R570 2002.0 EcoBlue Wildtrak AT R632 3002.0 EcoBlue Wildtrak 4x4 AT R678 200

DRIVING IMPRESSION
MX-5 RF misses onecrucial ingredient
Justin Jacobs
Small sports cars used to be weekend warriors. They were driver orientated toys that you could enjoy for two or three days before parking it and getting back into your execu-tive sedan for the Monday to Friday grind.
Unfortunately, times have changed and many just can’t afford such luxuries any more. Manufacturers have thus made their sports cars more practical and one such car is the Mazda MX-5, which fea-tures a folding hard-top roof and an automatic gearbox. Auto MX-5?
Called the RF switch stands for Retractable Fastback, the solid-lid MX-5 is now the only derivative sold locally as Mazda has, decided to cancel the soft-top with its manual gearbox.
The decision has been met with mixed response with some of my colleagues commenting that the two-pedal layout spoils the feel and poise the MX-5 has become known for. Truth be
told, I didn’t care much as the auto ‘box alleviated the clutch-stop-clutch-stop acrobatics of sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffi c.Small but acceptable
When I got into the car, I noticed that the cabin was somewhat cosy, in other words, small. There wasn’t much space for things, but I found myself sitting low with ample support from the seats. The steering wheel and pedal position is spot on and it feels like a little racing car. Enough power with added weight?
Under the bonnet sits the same 2.0-litre naturally as-pirated motor as the soft-top which produces 118 kW and 200 N.m of torque. As men-tioned, this is routed to the rear wheels via a self-shifting six-speed ‘box, and is further compounded by weighing 51 kg more than its sibling at 1 126 kg.
On back roads, the little Maz-da delivers a fun-fi lled driving experience - the steering is
well-weighted though
the throttle response is, to put it bluntly, slow. You really need to get it into the upper rev-range which gives the car a little fi zz as you approach the red-line.
As for practicality, the RF doesn’t offer much in terms of cabin space and the boot is not big at 1 27-litres. The targa-like roof, however, takes 13 seconds to retract and can be done at speeds up to 10 km/h. Verdict
So what do I think? Well, after a week I can report that the RF is a fun little car that is nonetheless wanting for a manual transmission. As con-venient as the automatic is, it feels out of place in a model wearing the MX-5 designation.
What’s more, its sticker price of R538 200 is simply too high and sees it going up against the Mazda CX-3 and CX-5, both of which offer much more in the red world. If, therefore, you want an MX-5, rather consider a used soft-top with the man-ual ‘box and save yourself a signifi cant amount of money.become known for. Truth be well-weighted though signifi cant amount of money.

The small sedan segment isn’t exactly booming, however, with personal mobility solutions such as Uber requiring such vehicles, we do tend to come into contact with these types of vehicles fairly often on local roads.
In and amongst the sea of Toyota Co-rolla Quests, I occasionally get an Uber driver with a Kia Rio sedan, or a Mazda3 sedan, but fairly often, a Suzuki Ciaz. I recently had the updated Ciaz on test, and left the experience rather more im-pressed than with the pre-facelift version. What’s new?
The Ciaz has been rather compre-hensively updated with an all-new front bumper, refreshed grille, LED fog lamps and new headlamps. The side profi le remains very much the same besides the new alloy wheel design for the GLX model. At the rear, there are new LED taillights. The design changes, overall, have made the Ciaz a far more attractive vehicle than it was before.
Inside, the trim has changed slightly with new Spiano key black inserts and bits of chrome for certain surfaces. In the display de-partment, there’s a TFT
readat in the instrument cluster which provides basic driving information, as well as the same seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system fi rst seen on the new Jimny. The system offers USB, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.Under the bonnet
The undoubted highlight of the pack-age for me was the addition of the same 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine also used by the Jimny and the new Ertiga. In this guise, it produces 77 kW and 138 N.m of torque. My week of driving resulted in a consumption fi gure of 6.6 L/100 km despite the 4.6 L/100 km claim.
Driving CiazThe aforementioned motor in combina-
tion with a rather sweet fi ve-speed manu-al gearbox makes for great progress. The standard creature comforts in the GLX variant included cruise control, electric mirrors and windows, leather seats, keyless start, a multifunction steering
wheel, air-conditioning as well as driver and passenger airbagsPracticality
In terms of practicality, the Ciaz cer-tainly delivers with a massive 495-litre boot and an impressive amount of rear passenger legroom, even if headroom is a bit inadequate for taller passengers. Niceties such as a rear privacy blind and ventilation for rear occupants also makes life easier. The other benefi t of that large boot is the fact that the vehicle comes with a full-size spare tyre. Conclusion
As far as a small, back-to-basics sedan goes, the Ciaz delivers big car space with small car effi ciency at a reasonable price.
The new powertrain and updated design now make it a far more
appealing product than be-fore. The only problem is that it’s a sedan, and the market for these vehicles shrinks by the day as crossovers and hatchbacks gain popularity.Service plan and war-ranty
The Ciaz range comes with a fi ve-year/200 000
km warranty as well as a three-year/60 000 km service plan.

The Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club ended the 2018/2019 Easterns Cricket League on a high.
Easterns Cricket recently confi rmed that the club placed second in the Sunday Promotion League and third in the Sunday Directors League.
“We were only two points behind the Promotion League winners Avion Cricket Club, who won with 59 league points,” explained Martiens Grobler, on behalf of the club.
“The Kempton Park based Avion won 12 of their 14 games.
“The two games they did lose they lost to us.”
Though the team was pleased with the results it is bittersweet as they won the league the previous year.
“It is somewhat heartbreaking for the team, but I can promise you that we will be back and ready to fi ght to reclaim the trophy next season,” said Grobler.
The club ended the Sunday Directors League third on the log, behind Bedfordview Cricket Club and Kempton Park Cricket Club.
“We are thrilled with this result especially after a long and diffi cult season for the Directors League team,” said Grobler.
“It is important to note that the team has moved up four leagues in the past three years and has been struggling with injuries throughout the season.
“On top of this, a number of players retired from the game.
“But still, with all this, we had a wonderful season.”
Though the season has come to an end for the club, two of its players, namely Phillip Crouse and Renier Wiesenar, were selected as part of the Easterns Cricket League T20 Team to compete in the Battle of the Roses Tournament.
“This is a yearly tournament
hosted by the Easterns Cricket League,” explained Grobler.
“The tournament is only open to players who have been selected by Easterns.
“This is the fi rst time players from our club have been selected for something like this.”
While the club enjoys some time off they are appealing to new players to come and join them for the new season, which will kick off in October.
“We look forward to growing and welcome all new and old members with open arms,” Grobler said.

Runners from near and far braved the chilly autumn morning, last Sunday, and arrived at the Germiston Stadium to take part in the 2019 Alan Robb Race.
The event is held annually by Germiston Callies Harriers in honour of Alan Robb, who won four Comrades Marathons in Callies’ colours.
Over 1 200 runners participated in this year’s event, with the oldest being 93.
The race, formerly known as the Legends Race, included a 15km and a 32km race, with
runners hitting the streets at 6.30am to the sound of a siren.
Among the runners was Robb himself.
The men’s 15km was won by Mbongeni Zoza, while Elizabeth Potter won in the women’s 15km division.
Bright Mikdangwe fi nished fi rst in the men’s 32km run, while Belinda Marais won the women’s event.
In keeping with tradition, the day included a 5km fun run, which aimed to raise funds for a worthy charity.
Callies announced that all proceeds from this year’s fun run will be donated to Siyabonga Children’s Home.
The home was
established in 1989 as a foster home and evolved into a child and youth care centre.
It currently cares for a number of children between the ages of one and 18 years old.
“Approximately R5 350 was raised for the home,” said Nicky du Preez on behalf of the club.
The club was thrilled with the success of this year’s race.
“The race was a huge success and there were no hiccups.
“We received many compliments from runners and other clubs,” said du Preez.
Runners from across Gauteng travelled to the Germiston Stadium, last Sunday, for the Alan Robb Race, hosted annually by Germiston Callies Harriers. Tshego Sikosana was in high spirits at the race and was ready to hit the streets.
