Food Biotechnology

Intro:Biotechnology has a long history of use in food production and processing. For ten thousand years fermentation, a form of biotechnology, has been used to produce wine, beer and bread. Selective breeding of animals such as horses and dogshas been going on for centuries. Selective breeding of essential foods such as rice, corn and wheat have created thousands of local varieties with improved yield compared totheir wild ancestors. However, most of the research and modification involve in usage of information technology (IT).

Equipment :The use of IT in food research varies which include the use of hardware, software and networking. Below are some of the examples of equipment used.

Hardware

Extractors for Raw Fibre Determination

Figure above shows Velp Extractor Model FIWE 3 and FIWE 6.

Features: 3 samples (FIWE 3) or 6 samples (FIWE 6) processed simultaneously Cold and hot extractions Samples can be individually processed Timer with acoustic alarm Cold and hot extractions

Functions: This hardware device is important in extracting raw fibrein food and feed which later be used in analysis for producing Genetic Modified Food (GMA).

OXITEST Reactor for accelerated oxidation tests

The figure below is the Velp OXITEST Oxidation Test Reactor.

Features: The temperature range start from room temperature to

110℃ . There are 2 numbers of oxidation chamber. Capacity of single chamber is 100ml. Visual alarm activated if probe is damaged or out of

temperature range. Able to visual data in database, compare test, and

transfer data into excel file.Functions:This probe is used to determine the oxidation stability

of foods, oil and fats. This is to determine the quality or the preservation of samples without preliminary fat separation.

Software Data Analysis Software: Bio-Plex Data Pro software

Figure above shows the disc cover of the Bio-Plex Data Pro software.

Features: Ability to combine results from multiple instruments

data. Able to make comparisons between biological replicate. Able to organize and visualize experimental results.

Functions: This software enables researchers to compare experimentalresults through statistically analysis on sample data. For example, the rate of experiment success can be determined from the results gain from different probes through analytic graph drawn by the software. The software also provide management of data set which simplify in presenting report.

Network The Seafood Network Information Center (SeafoodNIC)

Features : Guidance of processing steps to produce better quality

products. Update information of news on seafood technology. Information about the product development.

Aim : To update the quality information needs of seafood processor. This is also to implement the seafood safety among inspectors, researchers and food educators.

Part C

In the field of biotechnology, scientists need to get holdof the latest information in order to keep up with the fast

development pace in technology. Therefore, communicationwith the outside world becomes a necessary to exchangeinformation which what makes social networking a hot trendin this domain.

In the aspect of social networking, there are a fewapplications that help to establish better interactionsbetween users one of the program is a search engine calledScirus.Scirus is widely used to search for science websites, electronic journals and other document sources inscience, technology and medical (STM) disciplines.as well asallowing other users to upload science information andjournals.

Most of the users which depend on the information ofsocial networking application are from scientists, lectures, graduates or undergraduates. It is not uncommon for peopleto rely more on internet than referring to books for data. However, everything has their own advantages anddisadvantages that is needed to look through before usingit.

ProsI. Data exchanging site

a) Users able to transfer out useful science informationin data form to the net for others as references.

b) Users able to receive information by transferring datain files from the host.

II. Discussion areaa) Users able to voice out any problem concerning

biotechnology field.b) Propose of solution and methods can be made to counter

the stated problem.III. Distance learning

a) Application users can learn knowledge via internetthrough tutorials and lectures uploaded by other hosts.

ConsI. Reliability

a) Fake and altered information from the source may bedone by anonymous to mislead other users.

b) There are varying information where different locationhave different kind of information that is not fixedworldwide.

II. Copyrighta) Some host uploads the data which derived from

copyrighted book which violated the law.
