Tooling specialist Stocdon will join Italy’s MCM at the Farnborough International

Airshow later this month, kicking off in earnest the Cheltenham-based company’s new role as UK sales partner for the horizontal machining centre manufacturer. Eight-employee Stocdon will be expanded to support the MCM venture,

Last month, Volkswagen AG awarded Havant, UK-based component machining

specialist Formaplex with its Group Award 2016. At a ceremony in Berlin in front of 240 guests, the company picked up the prize based on its overall performance in 2015. The award was presented to Michael Last, managing director of Formaplex by Matthias Müller, chairman of the board of management at VW AG and Dr Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz, board management member in charge of procurement.

Express Oil and Gas has made a bold statement of

confidence in the future with further investment at its Gateshead facility. The company has acquired an additional Mazak Integrex i-400 multi-tasking machine tool which will form part of a new manufacturing cell producing valve components for the oil and gas sector, combining the operations of two existing machines into a single process,.

Express Oil and Gas has a long history with Mazak and, as

recently as 2014, acquired an additional number of large multi-tasking centres, including the first Integrex e-800 series machine to be installed in the UK.

“The investment in the latest Integrex multi-tasking machine will streamline our production process, allowing cycle time improvements across a variety of subsea components,” says commercial director Neil Ransom. “These efficiency benefits will enable us to remain profitable and

Express invests in the future with Mazak

OMC, which machines bicycle components

under the brand name OMC-Italia, has invested in a Haas UMC-750 universal machining centre. The machine is being used to produce bike parts such as single-piece double chain rings and spiders, with hollow pedal cranks.

Traditionally, the two front chain rings are machined separately and then bolted together on a central spider, to which the pedal cranks are also attached. On the OMC unit, the spider and chain rings are all

one part, machined from a 2 kg solid billet that ends up at just 160 g. The two separate pedal cranks, which are also machined from solid, are hollow, saving further weight.

“We start with over 7 kg of aluminium and we end up with a complete unit – a very strong assembly of front rings and cranks – weighing around 540 g,” says Ivan Cavallaro, founder of OMC Italia, which is based near Alba. “Saving weight and integrating strength are our two most important goals. Professional cyclists put

huge amounts of power through the front chain rings and pedal cranks, so we test our products on a rig to make sure we get the very maximum strength-to-weight ratio.

“From a productivity point-of-view, the Haas UMC-750 has allowed us to reduce machining of the front chain rings from 10 operations to just a single set-up,” he continues. “It’s proven to be a great investment. Tolerances are around 4 µm, which is no difficulty for the Haas machine.”

Dorchester-based Engineering Control

Supplies (ECS) has invested in a range of used and new machine tools from Machine Tool Sales Online (MTSO) and MACH Machine Tools Ltd respectively, to bring previously outsourced machining operations in-house.

The recent securing of multi-million pound contracts has allowed ECS to invest in 10 used machines from Machine Tool Sales Online, and two new CNC machines from MACH Machine Tools over the course of the past two years.

“A significant proportion of our work is repeat business and we operate across a number of high technology sectors – aerospace, defence, marine, oil and gas – where accuracy, reliability and cost-competitiveness are essential,” says operations director, Luke Anderson.

The used machines from

MTSO include a Haas SL 10 slant bed lathe, Haas TM 1P vertical machining centre, Hardinge GS-200 MSY multi-tasking lathe, Hardinge Elite 8/51 lathe, Hwatcheon Hi-Tech 200B lathe and two Bridgeport vertical machining centres – an XP1000-30 and XP600.

The strong relationship forged between ECS and MTSO has seen the former also invest in two new CNC machining centres from MACH Machine Tools.

“As part of our investment strategy we were in the market for two, high rigidity, large capacity, multi-tasking vertical machining centres, and immediately liked the look of the MACH 1020 Linear vertical machining centres,” says Anderson. “These machines, supplied with 4th-axis units, BT40 10,000 rpm spindles, 24-position ATC and a Fanuc 0i-MD control with extended memory, were available immediately at a cost

that was extremely competitive. We bought two of the machines and, since being installed, they have proved very reliable and haven’t missed a beat.”

The installation of a large capacity Hartford vertical

machining centre has not only allowed CS Simmons Precision Engineering to expand the size of niche work that the company handles for its established customer base in the oil and gas sector, but is enabling the Bath-based business to produce in one hit completed components that were formerly also machined on turning centres.

As production director Mark Simmons explains, the heavy duty Hartford HCMC 2082 accommodates workpieces weighing up to 2600 kg and provides an X-axis capability of more than 2 m. “This now allows us to machine long shafts for oil and gas valves, for example, while the machine’s high speed milling capability of up to 8000 rpm combines perfectly with its high torque value of 650 Nm.

“The result,” he adds, “is a machine that is well suited

to processing the difficult-to-machine materials we process, such as the Inconel, Hastelloy, Monel, 17-4 PH, S316 Super Duplex, Zeron 100 and Waspalloy, which have characterised our business since we were established 39 years ago.

“Importantly, too, the machine’s integral thread milling capability has also enabled us to eliminate a separate tapping operation which, on these types of materials, often created problems and frequent tap breakages.”

With 10 employees, the family-run business knew it needed to invest in a larger, faster vertical machining centre to ensure it continued to provide its oil and gas industry customers with

the parts they wanted at cost-effective prices.

“We decided to replace two ageing machining centres with one new machine, and when we compared the Hartford to a competitor, it was immediately

Around 10 years ago, the ‘rags to riches’ story

started for bicycle component business Superstar Components Ltd. The Lincoln-based business that started in a bedroom selling brake pads, quickly progressed to sourcing manufactured products from Taiwan for the cycling enthusiast. As the business evolved into more expansive product ranges, the production lead-times from Taiwan were increasingly prolonged. The decision was made to manufacture and control production from the UK, and this is where Fanuc came into the equation with its RoboDrill D21MiA5 machining centre and M-10iA 10M robot loading system.

The company was initially prototyping pedal systems using a four-axis machining centre with manual loading, which was a two-operation process. By transferring these parts to the automated Fanuc RoboDrill, the cycle time for 600 pedals has been reduced from little over three weeks to just three days. Additionally, the labour input has gone from 3.5 weeks of staff time to just one hour per day.

“The RoboDrill has taken Superstar Components

from being a niche product manufacturer with a higher price point, to a company that can now produce pedals for other companies at prices comparable with Taiwan,” says company owner and director, Neil Wilkinson. “Moreover, we can do this while achieving significantly

better quality levels.”On realising a productivity

improvement beyond 85% with the Fanuc RoboDrill, Wilkinson adds: “The upside to the machine is that it has double the spindle speed I was expecting and this has significantly improved our surface finishes.

Full five-axis capability while preserving the

integrity and original characteristics of a three-axis VMC has been achieved at the manufacturing facility of Euroscot Engineering thanks to the combination of a Quaser MV184 VMC equipped with a Nikken 5AX201 4+1 tilting rotary table and a Heidenhain ITNC530 control. The machine and table were supplied by the Engineering Technology Group.

Euroscot is a precision engineering company based in Glasgow that was looking to acquire a ‘best of both worlds’ solution when investing in a new machining centre, needing a combination of power and precision from the core three-axis machine but the single process machining capability achievable with five-axis processing.

Euroscot opted for the Quaser/Nikken combination to further enhance the company’s five-axis machining capabilities on

its Hardinge 5AX 500XP3. The company already operates a large capacity Hardinge XR1000 VMC equipped with a Nikken

table which is predominantly assigned to larger workpieces, making use of the enhanced five-axis capacity for complex single process machining. To facilitate lower batch runs, the Quaser accommodates the necessities for frequent set-ups and optimisation of machining times without interruptions while minimising downtime between batches.

“With the Quaser we are achieving precision to ±0.01 mm without having to remove the component,” says managing director Ian Rorison. “We start with a pre-cut billet and conclude with a completed workpiece machined in a single process.”

Kansas-based Triumph Structures Wichita is a

subcontractor specialising in high speed machining and sub-assembly of aluminium and titanium structural airframe components with wall thicknesses down to 5 mm. The company manufactures wing spars and stringers but also carries out a variety of production jobs on smaller sections, such as bulkheads and landing gear, which creates a need for fast, reliable and versatile machine tools.

To expand on the capabilities

of its existing 21 five-axis CNC machining centres for producing components up to 6.7 m long and more than 20 other three- and four-axis machines on site, Triumph Structures Wichita considered a variety of options. It decided on a bespoke machine from German manufacturer, Zimmermann, whose UK-based sales agent, Geo Kingsbury, describes the project for the benefit of British and Irish manufacturers that may be interested.

The US subcontractor asked Zimmerman to modify its FZ100 single-gantry machine to include

a second gantry. Each would be equipped with an independent Siemens Sinumerik 840D sl CNC and a M3 ABC fork milling head with three rotary CNC axes to provide simultaneous six-axis cutting using both gantries.

The ±15° B-axis avoids the pole position problem of traditional two-axis A/C rotary-tilt heads, whereby when A is at 0° it cannot move. The head is able to swivel, tilt and incline to any angle, providing constant feed rate capability, reducing machining times and improving component surface finish, as cutter chatter on the surface of

a component due to excessive C-axis rotation is eliminated.

“Over long runs, this can translate into cycle time reductions of 35% or more, especially as subsequent deburring and polishing are not required,” says Harry Thurmond, president of Triumph Structures Wichita.For further information www.geokingsbury.com

A horizontal machining centre designed so that it

can be expanded easily and inexpensively in the field has eased the growing pains of Adaero, a subcontractor in Crediton whose success in recent years means that its factory is bursting at the seams. The company invested £600,000 in capital plant during 2015 alone.

The recently installed four-axis HMC is an Akari HS-450i twin-pallet model with a 120-position, chain-type tool magazine. Supplied by UK agent Whitehouse Machine Tools, the 640 x 610 x 680 mm capacity machine will be retrofitted in the coming months with a six-pallet pool and a 100-tool extension to the magazine.

Another HMC was required due to the type of work destined for it, which involves extensive machining of deep pockets in mainly aluminium and some brass. Efficient swarf removal under gravity is a considerable advantage, as is the ability to use

existing fixtures and programs.Several HMC alternatives

were considered from a number of potential sources, including the supplier of the previously installed 15-pallet cell. Either the footprint was too large or the cost too high. The Akari

offered the combination of being economically priced and able to be expanded when space becomes available.

“The HS-450i is a fast machine, with a 15,000 rpm/22 kW direct drive spindle and 1 G acceleration to 60 m/min cutting feed rate,” says operations manager Jack Wilson. “Tool change is completed in one second, or three seconds when exchanging our Renishaw probe for workpiece set-up or the Marposs tool setting probe. Compared with the HMC that it replaced, the Akari is reducing cycle times by an average of 30% using the same programs, simply by increasing the feeds and speeds.”For further information www.wmtcnc.com
