APRIL 2019 PAGE 3
Pastoral Reflections by Father Costas In the Nicene Creed we proclaim at every Divine Liturgy and at other services, we state: “I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the ages to come. Amen.” Throughout the month of April, we continue on this journey we call Great Lent. And so, as Christians we “look for”, we anticipate to arrive at the destination this journey takes us on, and that is the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The aim and the goal of all the disciplines we have, and continue to practice all along during this Lenten Season, is to strengthen our FAITH in God. We all have faith and we all hope in something or in someone. The challenge that we all face is to be honest with ourselves and to identify who or what that someone or something might be. In Matt. 6:21, we read, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be
also”. What are the treasures in our life? What are the most important aspects of our life that we truly value? What do we anticipate at the end of our earthly journey? He who anticipates has an inner desire, an inner goal to attain. As Christians, traveling on this Lenten journey and going through Holy Week, we anticipate to walk with Christ on the road to Golgotha, to stand with Him at the Cross, and to see Him laid in the grave. As Christians though, we have hope, that quality that gives us inner strength to look beyond the Cross and to anticipate His glorious Resurrection. But we cannot simply be a spectator of this drama, we need to be participants. For if we seek to crucify our sins and our imperfect ways, and having cleansed the image of God within us, we too can participate in His glorious Resurrection. A theologian was recently asked what does it takes to attain salvation in this difficult world that we live in. I found his response simple yet profound; he said it takes “desire”. Again the words of our Lord come to mind…. “For where your treasure is, there will your
heart be also”. If we desire only the things of this world: the bigger house, the better life style, then our expectations will always be limited. Yes, we do want to have a good life, we want to use our God given talents to achieve much in life, but also we must desire and anticipate something that is eternal; Christ and His heavenly Kingdom. Without this desire for God, nothing that we achieve in this world will ever bring
us peace and accomplishment. We will always be searching; we will always be comparing ourselves to others, and at the end, we will be left wanting more. Matt. 6:33 crystallizes this teaching… “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto.” In closing, I pray that the following prayer offered at the end of the liturgy of the Pre-sanctified Gifts, will continues to guide us towards our goal: “O Almighty Master, Who in wisdom have fashioned all creation, Who, through Your ineffable providence and great goodness, have led us to these holy days for purification of souls and bodies, for restraint of passions, and for hope of the Resurrection, Who, during the forty days, did put into the hands of Your servant Moses the divinely inscribed tablets [of the Law]: grant unto us also, O Good One, to fight the good fight, to complete the course of the Fast, to preserve the Faith undivided, to crush the heads of invisible serpents, to be shown to be conquerors of sins and, without condemnation, also to attain to and to worship the holy Resurrection. For blessed and glorified is Your most honorable and majestic name: of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen”. May our Lord grant you also strength to continue the journey and to experience His eternal and glorious Resurrection. Καλή Ανάσταση, A blessed Resurrection to all! I look forward to seeing all of you in church for the remainder of this Lenten Season and during the beautiful services of Holy Week.
Lenten Prayer of St. Ephrem
O Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, despair, lust of power, and idle talk. But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility,
patience, and love to Thy servant. Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own transgressions, and not to judge my brother, for blessed art Thou, unto ages of ages. Amen.

~Toni Mannarino Sunday School Director
April brings a lot of opportunities for our students to participate in the life of our parish, and some of the most beautiful services in our Liturgical calendar. Please make sure your child is in Sunday School to learn to continue our journey towards becoming more prayerful. On Friday, April 26th we will have our annual Good Friday retreat. Events like this cannot be done without the tireless efforts of families who have given so much throughout the year and without whom this event would not happen from year to year. Please be sure to head to the parish website to sign your children up for this year’s retreat. Our final Sunday School event is our Parish’s Annual Oratorical Festival. Erika Moundros has been working with our students to prepare them for this event but participation is not what we would like for it to be. Students who participate in this event not only become more educated in the ways of Orthodoxy but can take this opportunity to enhance their outside education as well. Top performance at our Festival translates well on college applications, entrance interviews into elite colleges, essay writing skills, and above all public speaking opportunities that most young students do not often have the opportunity to obtain. We would like to encourage all students to participate and class time can and will be dedicated to help students with their essays. Following Pascha, we only have TWO Sundays left of Sunday School for the year! Please continue to bring your children. We will continue to take attendance and they can work on their achievements, too! There is still much to learn! And on Sunday, May 16th the last day of Sunday school we will have a short recognition program in church at the end of Liturgy as well as our End of Year Picnic. Please volunteer to help Elena Giatis in any way you can. We look forward to seeing you and your children throughout this Holy Season.

APRIL AND MAY PRACTICES ARE AS FOLLOWS: ▪ April 7 ▪ April 14* ▪ May 5 (Beginners & Juniors Only) ▪ May 19 (Juniors & Seniors Only
April 14th is also Costume Fitting Day for ALL Groups. This is the day that all the dancers will get measured to ensure their costume will fit properly in July and to give us enough time to order any new costumes that may be needed from Greece. Practice for each group will begin after all dancers in the group have been measured (with the number of dancers in each group that will need to get measured, please know practice may run a little longer than normal that day). Parent help is needed in each group to allow for the process to move along ~ please let your instructor know if you could help. Please note that dance registration fees need to be paid prior to this day for your dancer to be assigned a costume. If your dancer is not going to be at practice on April 14, please let your instructors know prior to that day and other arrangements will be made to get your dancer measured. Thank you once again for your continued support in the dance program.
Greek School News ~ Kathy Glaros
Greek School Superintendent
Wow! What a March it has been! On Sunday March 24th, 2019 our school celebrated one of our major holidays of Orthodoxy, the Annunciation of Virgin Mary and the Anniversary of our National Independence. Our children “from youngest to the oldest” once again amazed everyone with songs, poems and skits, dedicated to all those who fought for freedom, the valuable gift that gives true meaning to our lives. They truly touched us their heartfelt performance and hard work. Anniversaries, like the 25th of March strengthen the ethnic confidence with the memory recall of a significant past. An exciting month indeed! As we begin the month of April, there are a couple of schedule reminders that would like to make:
▪ Wednesday April 3rd Youth Lenten Dinner ▪ Saturday March 30th Greek Independence Day
Parade ▪ Monday April 22nd No School ~ Easter Break ▪ Monday April 29th Classes Resume – Report
cards go home ▪ Monday June 10--12 Summer Camp
The final months are very busy academically. All the teacher need to ensure that their students are prepared for the end of the year review and the final examinations coming up. It is vital that the students are focused and do their best to attend all classes. There is not much time left, lets make sure we take ad-vantage of it. As we approach the Resurrection of our Lord the Savior Jesus Christ, I would like to wish you all a Happy Easter.
Sunday of Orthodoxy Children brought their icons from home for the procession on Sunday of Orthodoxy.

Trisagia and Memorial Services Fr. Costas P. Keares
Below is an explanation of the practice of Trisagia and Memorial (Mnymosino) services in the Orthodox Church.
Each day of the week, the Church offers us an opportunity to focus on a certain subject with prayers and hymns.
Monday: The Day honoring the Angels Tuesday: The Day honoring the Forerunner, St. John the Baptist Wednesday: The Betrayal by Judas is remembered Thursday: The Day honoring the Holy Apostles Friday: The Day honoring the Cross Saturday: The Day honoring those who have
fallen asleep Sunday: The Day of the Resurrection
As we can see, Saturday is the day dedicated for those who have fallen asleep and the day traditionally memorials were offered. By exception, the Church permits memorial services with koliva on Sundays to accommodate people’s schedules, etc. The practice is to offer memorials on the 40th day, the 6th month, the 9th month, 1 year, and then every 3rd year and perhaps every 5 year anniversary of a loved one’s death.
In our parish a large amount of trisagia (no koliva) are being offered on Sundays. Trisagia should not be offered in church in place of the memorial service for remembering loved ones. This is not the right place to do it. That’s why the church offers Saturday of the Souls so that we can annually remember ALL our loved ones who have passed away. There are four times during the year that Saturday of the Souls is commemorated – the beginning of Great Lent and the day before Pentecost. Additionally, we offer Trisagia at the cemetery on Memorial Day.
If you would like to have your loved one prayed for on a Sunday, you have two options: ▪ You may order Koliva and offer a memorial
service. (Along with the loved one you are remembering, you may add immediate family members)
▪ You may send names of loved ones to me to be commemorated in the proskomidi service (preparation of the gifts) during Orthros in the Altar
From this point forward, the church office will only be scheduling memorial services (with koliva) for Sundays. If you would like to celebrate a private Trisagion or have questions, feel free to contact me.

As we are enjoying our new parking lot, we would like to thank all who have returned their commitment card for the Final Phase of

Take the Lenten Challenge
Take the LENTEN CHALLENGE! Give of your TIME and come to worship and experience at least one of each of the different services throughout Great Lent!
GREAT COMPLINE (Monday evenings at 7pm) - Night Prayer, or the Prayers at the End of the Day, is the final church service of the day in the Christian tradition of canonical hours. The English word compline is derived from the Latin completorium, as Compline is the completion of the working day.
PRESANCTIFIED LITURGY (Wednesdays at 5pm) - The Divine Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is a Byzantine Rite liturgical service which is performed on the weekdays of Great Lent - a season of repentance, fasting, and intensified prayer when the more frequent r e c e p t i o n o f c o m m u n i o n i s desirable. Communion is received from Gifts (the Body and Blood of Christ) that are sanctified (consecrated) in advance.
SALUTATIONS TO THE THEOTOKOS (Friday eve-nings at 7pm) - Salutations to the Most Holy The-otokos is an Akathist service of the Eastern Ortho-dox Church, celebrated during the Great Lent. The Akathist is often split into four parts and sung at the “Salutations to the Theotokos” service on the first four Friday evenings in Great Lent; the entire Akathist is then sung on the fifth Friday evening.
We give our time to the Lord in these services in or-der to be strengthened to go out and give/volunteer our time to those in need.
Believe it or not, it’s time for us to begin preparing for the annual Grecian Festival, which will be held at our parish July 18—21, 2019! Festival baking begins on Monday, April 1st and continues weekly on Mondays and Tuesdays until we have baked and prepared many of the food items our guests enjoy. The day begins at 9:00 AM and ends at approximately 2:00 PM. Obviously, the more volunteers we have the sooner we can get the job at hand completed. Whether you can come for only an hour or stay for four hours, we invite you to join us. We are so grateful for all our volunteers who work so tirelessly to make our festival a success. The April / May schedule will be as follows: MON April 1 TUES April 2 Koulourakia MON April 8 TUES April 9 Kourambiethes MON April 15 Finikia TUES April 16 Pineapple Cheese rolls TUES April 30 Galactobouriko MON May 6 TUES May 7 MON May 13 TUES May 14 Grape leaves MON May 20 TUES May 21 Apple / Cherry rolls TUES May 28 Tiropita

December financials ▪ Journal entry to move expenses for Pave the Way
out of retained earnings (2017) or expense (2018) and capitalize on balance sheet. Currently in the process of creating a journal entry to capitalize but proposal is to not depreciate the property improvement over its useful life.

▪ Startup issues with new payroll processing vendor being worked out.
▪ Draft Dec financial results (Actual vs. Forecasted at November General Assembly meeting). Revenue: $1.248 million vs. $1.1 million; Expense: $1 million vs. $1 million; Net Income: $125k net income in-crease from what was forecasted.
Issues on controls over weekly cash ~ Some parishioners have made comments that cash wasn’t being handled with the correct diligence. Chris Bodle prepared a written policy to address the situation:
▪ Begin locking the candle stands after Sunday (and holiday) services where uncollected cash might sit.
▪ Two members of Parish council should transport the weekly offerings to the office and secure them until they can be counted.
▪ Candle stand cash should be transported in a basket and not by hand.
▪ Tony Colovas moved to approve the policy as amended. / John Elliott seconded. / Motion passed.
Assistant Priest / Youth director ~ Multiple parishioners have come forth and agreed to donate $5k in support of moving on an assistant priest. Cost of a new priest would be approximately $92k total compensation. Discussion that fundraising (i.e. donations for new priest) should be taken to Ways and Means committee for further action. A motion to table the vote was made by John Elliott / Jason Kouvaras seconded. Motion passed with President breaking a tie.
