This article was written and published in 1985, in When Information Counts. Grading the Media, edited by Bernard Rubin (Lexington Books: D. C. Heath and Company, Lexington, MA / Toronto). I was at the time very involved in the new movement of independent feature films in the US, and this is one of several articles or lectures that I gave on the topic, including a major retrospective of early independent features at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
