FROM THE EDITORS DESK

It is a privilege to present you with the 13th issue of theNewsletter which illustrates the prevailing academic andintellectual rigour of the ISS. In the last seven years theNewsletter has established itself as the voice of the ISS andhas played a major role in highlighting academic andsociological ventures.

Anthony Giddens once opined that the fundamentaltask of sociology today is to tackle the three major sets ofchanges happening in contemporary societies viz., theimpact of globalisation, technological change and shifts ineveryday life as well as to analyse what they mean for ourlives today. As its editor, it has been my firm convictionthat the ISS Newsletter should undertake this quest topresent the key issues in sociology at least in a nutshell. TheNewsletter attempts to bring to academicians and sociologistsa comprehensive, up-to-date presentation of the seminalissues and events in Indian Sociology.

I am immensely grateful to all our members for theirkind cooperation and support in making this Newsletteran integral part of the ISS activities.Jacob John KattakayamE-mail: [email protected]

FROM THE SECRETARYS DESK

Dear Friends and Colleagues,Greetings from Jaipur. It is extremely kind of you

to have provided me the opportunity to serve the IndianSociological Society as its Secretary. I am deeplyconcerned and conscious of the responsibilities andduties you have entrusted to me in this position androle. I will try my best to measure up to yourexpectations.

ISS being one of the largest national associations ofprofessional sociologists in the world, we are all veryconscious that we as a collectivity have greatresponsibility in contributing to the growth andstrengthening of sociology at the international level. Wecan begin to move in this direction by having formalMOUs with a few select national sociologicalassociations from each region of the world.

We can all be very proud of the quick progress andstrides our research committees have made in such ashort span of their existence. However, to furtherimprove and strengthenen the adacademic functioningof RCs, all the ISS members need to become memberof at least one RC and also that each RC makes itmandatory to hold at least one mid-term seminar /conference to make that RC more vibrant.

It need not be over emphasized that a strongnetwork of regional associations will not only help inthe growth of sociology in the respective regions butwill also strengthen ISS. As such, we all need to joinhands in the establishment of associations in ourrespective regions and to affiliate these with ISS. It wouldalso help the ISS to prepare a National Calendar ofSociological Events.

To meet the growing aspirations, it is now time thatan E-Journal of Sociology be launched. To march with thetimes, both Sociological Bulletin and ISS Newsletter be alsomade available on-line. For faster communication anddissemination of information, a monthly or bi-monthlyISS-Email may be considered in addition to theNewsletter. However, the real and substantial benefitswill filter down only when members communicate theiremail addresses to the Society.

I also take this opportunity to appeal to all themembers to start communicating their latest postaladdress, phone and mobile numbers and themembership of their respective RCs in order to updatethe Directory of Members last published in 2001. Soonerthe members do it, the better.

I am keenly looking forward to your responses, suggestions, advice for very fruitful and creative yearsof working together in cooperation and to welcomeand meet you all in Jaipur. With best regards,Ishwar Modi E-mail: [email protected] [email protected]
