CHAIRMAN’SREPORTI report at the start of amomentous year – 2012,with a home OlympicGames in London. Forthose committed to anysport, and especially all of usin the fencing corner, it don’tget much better! Let’s hope wecelebrate this fantastic year withall the enjoyment there should be– and achieve a great legacy forour sport.

Let me start with an update on our 3G (Green, Grow, Gold)strategy. There is very good news on Green: we have attained theGreen status for British Fencing on the latest assessment by theindependent judges employed by our funders, Sport England andUK Sport. It’s been a hard journey from the Red verdict just 18months ago, for which much credit is due to our CEO, PiersMartin, who led the effort to bring our governance and systemsup to the required standards.

What does this mean? We aim to be a world-class governingbody, giving high standards of service to fencers and members, and effective leadership to the sport. The Green rating shows weare making the right progress. But we know there is more to do– and we are setting new goals and targets. We learned frommembers’ comments and questions at the recent AGM; we arelearning from the continuing Road Shows and of course from ourpostbag. I say to all members: do keep telling us where we canand should do more and better, for you and for the sport.

The other parts of the 3G mission are Grow and Gold. On Grow,as I reported at the AGM, we are NOT one of the seven sportsout of 46 funded by Sport England who are hitting the agreedtargets for increased participation. As measured by the ActivePeople survey, we are behind where we aimed to be. It is

essential that we get growth going – your Board is determinedto develop the grass roots. So, we have brought together a newGrow Committee to advise us, and will be adjusting our plansand programmes to enhance the demand for fencing.

The Gold agenda is also behind schedule. Our results at therecent European and World Championships were disappointing. But, under Performance Manager Alex Newton, our elite squad isworking harder than ever, with some excellent coaches, and thefencers tell me that the quality and level of support for them isbetter than ever before.

Olympic selection will be based on that already announced. TheBoard sees no case for change; we want to stick anyway to whatthe athletes have worked to so far. There is, of course, a majoropportunity for all of them, with the eight discretionary Olympicplaces – all of which will be filled. There will be more Britishfencers than ever before competing in this Olympic Games –more for us to cheer on.

As part of the Green agenda, we are still looking hard at how BFoperates. I am personally conducting a review of the Board itself.Any changes in our Articles to be recommended will come tomembers for decision. Just about to start is a Capability Reviewof Head Office conducted by Peter King, well known as the CEOwho led the transformation of British Cycling from nearbankruptcy in 1997 to its winning status today. I’m sure he willgive us good advice. We have a working group with the HomeCountries developing a new and improved membership scheme, for launch in 2012. There are also BF working groups examiningthe potential for mergers with England Fencing and WheelchairFencing.

So, it’s a busy British Fencing agenda. So it should be. YourBoard, like the members, is ambitious for this great sport. Westrive for success at all levels and to be effective and viable – asa governing body, as a voluntary organisation, as a (not forprofit) business. Be assured, we are working hard and we aim tomake 2012 a very big year for fencing in this country.

AGMPerhaps it was the promise of a free lunch, but British Fencing’s2011 AGM at the BOA’s offices in central London was the mostheavily attended for many years. More than 80 people heard BFAPresident Keith Smith start proceedings by stating that this was histhird and last term of office; from 2012 onwards, he suggested thatthe President might be appointed by the Board.

He announced the following BFA honours: silver medal – PhilipMarsh; bronze medal – John Anderson, Chris Howser, BrianMatless, Lyndon Taylor; Award of Merit – Beth Davidson, GrahamLangton, Ken McCubbin, Tim O'Connor, Shirley Parker; Goblets &Tankards – Kristjan Archer, Sue Benney, Richard Kruse, Men’s junior

foil team (James Davis, Jamie Fitzgerald, Husayan Rosowsky, AlexTofalides), Men’s senior foil team (Laurence Halsted, Ed Jefferies,Richard Kruse, Marcus Mepstead), Ziemek Wojciechowski, MaciejWojtkowiak.

In his report, Chairman David Teasdale spoke of the 3G strategy andpointed out that 54% of British Fencing’s income came from thepublic purse. One of its funding bodies, Sport England, surveyed theparticipation results for the 46 sports they support and after 2 yearsonly seven were achieving their targets; fencing was not among them.

He announced two proposals for mergers under consideration – onewith England Fencing and the other with Wheelchair Fencing – whichworking parties were looking into with the intention of bringing

recommendations to the membership. All committees werebeing reviewed and a new one had been formed: theFinance and Audit Committee chaired by Andrew Brannon.

He hoped that BF would come out of 2012 with a legacy ofa national training facility, a better membership scheme, agood club in every Olympic borough and more Swordmarkclubs. He asked for any other legacy suggestions from themembership.

A lengthy question-and-answer session gave members theopportunity to air their concerns and for representatives ofBF to clarify issues. Asked to comment on selectionprocedure, Performance Manager Alex Newton said shefollowed objective criteria, looking at trajectories of recentperformance with the aim of selecting those who couldchallenge the best in the world. However, the fact was thatonly three British fencers were in the world top 50 acrossall weapons. UK Sport’s funding programme wasperformance driven and British Fencing had not met asingle milestone target since the programme had started.

David Teasdale said fencers as well as administratorswould be involved in awarding the eight discretionaryhost-nation places at the Olympic Games. Alex Newtonconfirmed that all eight places would be allocated, butemphasised that fencers had to have realistic medalprospects in 2012 or 2016. She added that fencers couldfund themselves to World Cup events.

Asked about how the Grow programme could beencouraged, England Fencing President Ray Stafford said akit hire-to-buy scheme was available from EF to help startnew clubs. Georgina Usher described the sort of situationwhere such a scheme could be useful – starter sessions foradults run by fencing parents of young children at venues

where other parents waited while their children took partin various activities.

Fencing father Ed Peck outlined the work of the Parents’Group, which was set up in 2010 to help children developas fencers and to improve communication betweenparents and BF. Most recently, they had introduced the BestRun Fencing Competition awards as a constructive way ofrecognising good competitions and of suggestingimprovements, using surveys that parents can complete ateach event. Their main concern was the cost andorganisation of international trips for cadet and juniorfencers. The group had agreed with BF that fencers shouldbe allowed to travel independently from the main squad inorder to take advantage of cheaper travel deals or to usemore convenient routes and travel times. The group has itsown website at http://bfparentsgroup.co.uk/

BOARD ELECTIONAlp Orge has been elected to the Board of British Fencing.

SPORT SATISFACTION ANDPARTICIPATIONSport England’s third annual survey of sports shows thatoverall satisfaction in fencing has increased marginallyfrom 78.8 in 2009 to 79.2 in 2011. A total of 716 fencers(aged 14 and over) took part in the survey – 98 generalparticipants, 571 club members and 47 talent poolmembers. When asked to rate the current British Fencingmembership fee in terms of value for money, on average37% thought it represented good value (with 46% of thetalent pool marking it as such), 47% were neutral and 16%thought it offered poor value.

The Q club celebrated its 50th anniversary with a dinner at the New Cavendish Club in London. Founded when the Surrey CountyFencing Union was going through a difficult time, the club did much to reinvigorate fencing in Surrey by improving organisation ofevents, encouraging more competition and building up enthusiasm for the sport locally.

Although epee is said to be the most popular weapon, ofthose responding to the survey 43% identified their mainweapon as foil, 35% as epee and 19% as sabre, with 3%non-specific.

But Sport England’s fifth annual Active People surveyshows that the number of fencers aged 16+ taking partin their sport at least once a week fell slightly from 15,000in 2007/8 to 13,700 in 2010/11. Of the 30 sports for whicha four-year comparison could be made, only four –athletics, boxing, mountaineering and table tennis – showeda significant increase in participation. Nineteen sports sawa significant decrease, while the remaining seven, including fencing, recorded statistically insignificantchanges.

DINNER DATEITV is filming its Dinner Date show until April and islooking for single men to take part. Fencers who fit thatcategory and are, as they say, ‘up for a laugh’ shouldcontact [email protected] or call 020 71846742.

101 YEARS AGOA report in The Guardian of 6 February 1911 noted that inFrance new rules for epee had been introduced. The firsthit on the trunk scored three and subsequent hits on thetrunk, as well as hits on the arm and hand, scored onepoint, with hits on the thigh scoring two. These rules wereintroduced to distinguish between a mere touch on thefinger and a more dangerous hit to chest. But the newscoring caused sharp divisions of opinion with puristscomplaining that fencers would risk hits on the arm orhand for the sake of a higher score on the chest orstomach, so that epee would degenerate into competitionfighting rather than duelling as was originally intended.

GOLDEN BULLBritish Fencing has won a Golden Bull award from thePlain English Campaign for general jargon and thegovernance strategy that it "will innovate to ensure thatwe are successful on the piste." Like fitting Tasers toweapons perhaps – that would certainly wipe the smileoff the faces of the opposition at the Olympics. ■

W e are now on the final leg to the 2012 LondonOlympic Games. The Test Event was successfullyheld at Excel in November. My congratulations to

Hilary Philbin, Competition Manager, and to Caryl Oliverand Liz Charlton on producing a splendid occasion. It wasgreat to see so many enthusiastic volunteers covering areally broad age range, and to see our Great Britain teamwin the team event. It will be amazing to have anaudience of 8000 watching the fencing next summer; theatmosphere should be electric.

The hosting of the Olympic Games in London is likely to bea once in a lifetime experience for us all. It will allow ourselected fencers to perform in front of a home crowd andwe hope this will raise their performance and see themwin a medal for Great Britain. It will also allow our hostallocation of eight referees to have an Olympic experience, our coaches to pit their skills against the very best in theworld, and our volunteers to play an integral and vital rolein the delivery of a successful Games. The FIE qualificationperiod finishes at the end of March and the EuropeanZonal qualifiers take place in Bratislava in April. Finally, ourHost Nation places will be selected by Alex Newton and aselection panel. It will be our largest team since theBarcelona Olympics in 1992.

The Olympics will mark the end of the London Olympiadand the start of the Rio Olympiad. As London ends, BritishFencing will begin its programme for developing andmanaging our sport through to 2016. It needs to look atgrowing support at home, improving international resultsand providing an ever improving service to all ourmembers. Both internal and external communications willbe a priority. It is certain that British Fencing will bemanaged in a very different way. This process has alreadystarted with the employment of Piers Martin as CEO andDavid Teasdale as independent Chair. It is likely that therole of President will become non-elected, honorific andsymbolic. Our sport will increasingly be run by paidprofessionals and a key issue will be post-London funding.

I would like to thank all the members who attended theAGM. It was good to honour those who have and continueto contribute so much to our sport. David Teasdale isdealing with members’ feedback from the meeting. The GB

championships, Eden Cup, Leon Paul International and allour domestic competitions, not to mention most of ourclubs, would not run without volunteers.

Looking to 2012, I would like to wish the Pro SabreInternational and the Camden Cadet International everysuccess. Both competitions show that sponsorship can befound to run events. I hope as many of you as possible willcome to watch the Women’s Sabre FIE World Cup inLondon in February. And I look forward to seeing greatsuccess from our Cadet and Junior fencers at theirEuropean and World Championships in March and April.

I wish you all a very happy and successful 2012. ■

IAN KEEBLE REMEMBEREDCoach Ian Keeble was fondly remembered when aspecial silver trophy was presented by his widow,Diane, at the London International Epee inNovember. The many clubs where Ian coached madea collection which was used to buy a trophy to beknown as the Keeble Cup, awarded for the women’steam epee championship. In a tribute, Kate Smithsaid it was a fitting way to commemorate Ian’scontribution to women’s epee.

Pitting his wits

The main office of Beazley Group is an imposingmodern building five minutes’ walk from the Towerof London. To the left of the reception area on the

ninth floor stands a glass cabinet advertising their latestpartner: British Fencing. A looped video shows fencers(mainly non-British) in action as well as a short instructionsection. A placard states that 10,000 people fence inBritain, that there are 400 clubs and more than 90competitions a year. The cabinet literally holds pride ofplace.

In January 2011 the firm entered into a sponsorship withBritish Fencing worth a million pounds over five years, andalso became the BFA’s official insurer. It is a massiveinjection of capital, increasing fencing’s funding by 32%.The person who engineered the sponsorship is thecompany’s chief marketing officer, who bears the famousname of William Pitt.

Is there any connection to William Pitt the Elder (1708-78),who led Britain during the Seven Years War and was apowerful, but ultimately unsuccessful, advocate inParliament for the rights of the American colonists? Or hisson, Pitt the Younger (1759-1806), who became primeminister at the age of 24? “Sadly not,” admits Beazley’sMr Pitt. “My father, though, was a great admirer of bothPitts. But it is a memorable name, and having it does noharm at all.”

Pitt is a spry, lean man who fenced briefly at Downside, learning foil under the school’s head of Russian. “But Ionly dabbled.” Today he is a keen marathon-runner. Hefirst ran in Venice in 2010, then managed 3 hours 39minutes in his next race, in Paris; but failed to obtain aspace through the ballot for the 2012 London marathon. He has just celebrated his 50th birthday and until he is 59and enters a new age category has to reach the ‘crazy’standard of 3 hours 15 minutes to qualify automatically.

After reading history at Oxford, he moved to Italy for ayear, teaching English as a foreign language. Returning tothe UK, he went into the insurance business, joining aLloyd's broker, where he helped Lloyd's members – orNames – put up their works of art as part of their financialguarantee, using these so-called ‘unproductive assets’ assecurity. “It was innovative at the time, and interesting towork on.”

He left the insurance business for journalism – includinga year in Paris as correspondent for Director magazine –but returned in the early 1990s when storm clouds weregathering over the Lloyd's market. As the market

endeavoured to put its house in order after massivelosses, Pitt was responsible for communication with theNames, some of whom were having to sell their works ofart. “It was a very tough time for a lot of people.”

After the Lloyd's reconstruction plan was accomplished,Pitt moved to New York. There he joined Marsh, a leadinginsurance broker, and, later, Beazley, just as the companywas establishing a local US presence.

Beazley is a mid-sized specialist insurer, he says,“but we doquite a lot of interesting things under that title.” The firmhas grown significantly in the last ten years to $1.7 billionin gross premiums for 2010 and is now the third largestinsurer at Lloyd's, with a strong focus on the Americanmarket: it insures a third of the top 200 US law firms, morethan half the top 50 US engineering and architecturaldesign firms, and half the retail jewellers in the UK. “Thereare lots of eggs in the Lloyd's basket. We have veryfocused target markets and pretty high penetration inthose markets. We try to stick to our knitting.” If not totheir metaphors.

In 2009, the firm started to think seriously aboutsponsorship. One factor was London's imminent role inhosting the 2012 Games. “Were we going to do anythingabout that? We looked at various sports, having neversponsored in this area before. As we weren’t the bestpeople to identify what we wanted, we brought in WSM,a specialist sports marketing agency, and they came upwith two candidates: hockey and fencing.”

Pitt describes the criteria he and his colleagues applied totheir choice. “We were looking for a sport that lacked aprincipal sponsor – one where we could make a realimpact. Something a bit different to the marquee sportswhich already have tremendous support – say golf orfootball. At that stage, we hadn’t decided on a particularsum of money, although we knew we weren’t going to beputting in ten million pounds. We didn’t want to committo a whole lot of cash in a hugely expensive, undifferentiated way, and we didn’t want a ‘me too’sponsorship.”

In 2010, he met Piers Martin and David King, and wasimpressed. “Fencing is a sport for Everyman – andEverywoman. The people in it tend to be articulate, well-educated and confident -- which from the sponsorshippoint of view is very nice.” Historically it’s been somethingof a toffs' sport, he recognises, “but there’s no reason whyit should be. I'm enormously impressed by inner cityinitiatives such as Newham Swords in east London. It’s not

just at the international level we would like to have an impact: we want to havean influence at grass roots level as well.”

He acknowledges, however, that this is “a big challenge, and one we haven’tgot our arms round yet. There's definitely been a learning curve for BritishFencing and for us, but I feel we have been moving in the right direction.”

Day to day responsibility for managing the sponsorship rests with Ian Hoy onPitt's team. “Ian's been doing a fabulous job. We've held a number of verysuccessful fencing exhibits in the City of London, including one in the Lloyd'sbuilding.” Hoy also encouraged Hillier, a leading horticultural firm, to create afencing-themed exhibit for the 2012 Chelsea Flower Show. “We're intrigued tosee what they come up with,” Pitt says.

Within Beazley, the sponsorship has been very well received. “There’s aninstinctive feeling that fencing fits in with who we are. There are sharedcharacteristics: in both fencing and insurance, you can lose a lot very quickly ifyou relax your guard! In both, it’s a matter of having the right information andmaking the right deductions. You need to move quickly and be highlyresponsive, and so on.”

Will Beazley’s sponsorship continue beyond 2016? “To be honest with you, Idon’t know yet.” The company will assess matters a year before thesponsorship expires. “The Olympic side is just one dimension, but by no meansthe whole – it might not reflect well on our risk assessment skills if it were! Ofcourse, one takes a risk on how the national team is going to perform, but wealways intended to be in it for the long haul. We see enormous potential forfencing in this country.

“We’d certainly like to leave some kind of legacy and we have five years to doit in,” Pitt says. One of the challenges in getting bigger audiences, he accepts,“is the incredible speed of fencing. You need to be a Leonardo da Vinci, whohad an eye like a slow-motion camera. But there is more that we can do todeconstruct what’s going on and explain the range of skills that underlie eachflurry of action. And I’ve already found that once you get people exposed tofencing, they say, ‘Yes, I enjoyed that!’” ■

INDIVIDUALMEN’S FOILDespite looking fitter and stronger than ever before,Britain’s foilists did not have a good day. Richard Krusewas up first against Kawiecki (POL), who had narrowlybeaten him in the European championships. This timeit was a worse defeat as he quickly lost the first fourhits and was 3-6 behind at the break. A combination oflanguid footwork and the wrong selection of moves sawhim crash out 5-15. Laurence Halsted was next againstBachmann (GER) and it was a similar story: 1-5 down at

the first break and 1-10 at the second before makingsomething of a fight back and losing 8-15. Jamie Kenberhad an easier first DE, against world No. 137 Kiil (DEN),but only just won 15-14. He then faced the world No. 1,Andrea Cassara (ITA), and was taken apart 15-4. Butthen Cassara destroyed everyone on his way to the final, beating Sintes (FRA) 15-5 in the first semi-final, whilehis team-mates Avola and Aspromonte fought it out inthe other, Aspromonte edging out the Europeanchampion 14-13 on time. He went on to take a 3-1 leadin the final, but Cassara was not to be denied and camethrough 15-14 to become world champion for the firsttime.

WOMEN’S FOILSophie Troiano had the dubious honour of facing tripleOlympic gold medallist Valentina Vezzali (ITA) – commonlyreferred to as the poster girl of world fencing. The Italianwas 7-1 up at the first break. Troiano did well to take thefight into the third period, but she only scored anothertwo hits before going down 3-15. Boubakri (TUN) ranked 11th in the world. She made acome back in the second period to trail 9-13 and thenscored the first two hits in the third, but the Tunisianscrambled across the line, winning 15-13. NataliaSheppard faced Chen (CHN) ranked 14th in the world andfenced intelligently to lead 5-4 at the second break. ButChen stepped up a gear in the third period and camethrough impressively to win 15-8.

TheSWORD14

The semi-finals saw Vezzali take on the talented 17-year-old American, Lee Kiefer who had knocked out Chen in theL16 and Synoradzka (POL) in the quarter-finals. Vezzali’sexperience shone through and she won 15-10, havingtrailed in the early stages. Watch out for this youngAmerican though; we’ll definitely be seeing more of her inthe future. In the other semi the world No. 1, Di Francisca(ITA), beat world No. 3, Nam (KOR), 14-8 on time. So thetop two in the world faced off for the gold medal in whatturned out to be a completely one-sided affair, Vezzaliprevailing 14-7 to take her sixth world title. Asked howshe was still able to motivate herself after winning somany titles, she said: “When I’m fencing, in any kind ofcompetition, my aim is to win every time; this is a newmotivation that gives me the strength.”

MEN’S EPEEAll the top seeds fell in the early stages, proving once againthat epee is the most unpredictable of weapons. Take thecases of Jon Willis and Park (KOR). Willis won 4/6 bouts inhis poule to be seeded 66th and Park won 3/5 to finish97th. Both won their first preliminary DEs, but in thesecond Willis just lost a slow-scoring match against Pop(ROM) 7-8, while Park beat the 33rd seed and then tookout the reigning Olympic champion and No. 6 seedTagliariol (ITA). He continued in brilliant form to reach thesemi-finals by beating the No. 3 seed Novosjolov (EST) 15-8 before finally coming unstuck against the Europeansilver medallist Verwijlen (NED).

The second semi saw Kauter (SUI) take an early lead againstPizzo (ITA) before the Italian came through 15-13. Thefinal was full of twists and turns with Verwijlen appearingto have the better tactics. His coach had instructed him to

draw Pizzo’s attack and then block and close out. Thisworked well and he stormed to a 6-2 lead, but thenchanged tactics and Pizzo came back to equalise.Reverting to his game plan, the Dutchman again took thelead but didn’t learn from his earlier mistake and changedtactics again, going on the attack. This played into thehands of Pizzo who picked him off to win the title 15-13.

WOMEN’S EPEEAlthough they fought through to the L64, both Sisi Albiniand Georgina Usher fell to higher seeded opponents,Albini going down to Dinu (ROM) 9-15 and Usher fallingto the world No. 3, Del Carretto (ITA), 8-15. Seeded 32after winning 5/6 bouts in her poule, Corinna Lawrencefaced the 33rd seed, Jevremovic (SRB), and after a tightfight scraped through 15-14. Her next opponent wasZuikova (EST) who had taken out the No. 1 seed, Nisima(FRA), in the previous round. After a cagey start, Lawrencetook the lead and stayed in control to win 15-10,becoming the only British fencer at these worldchampionships to reach the L16. Here she drew the trickyworld No. 10, Sozanska (GER), and went down 9-15.

The semi-finals were both Sino-Romanian affairs. Sun(CHN) just out-pointed Branza (ROM) 15-14 in thefirst. The second was a far more compelling fight betweenMaroiu (ROM) and Li (CHN) during which non-combativitywas called in the final minute of real time. Priority went toLi but the Romanian pulled out a three-hit lead with 14seconds left on the clock. Somehow with just 2 seconds togo, Li tied the scores at 13-all, thus winning on priority. The final was dominated by the 30-year-old Li, who woneasily 13-7 at time.

MEN’S SABREOnce again James Honeybone faced world No. 1,Yakimenko (RUS), as he had done in the Europeanchampionships. He came out of the blocks fast to go 3-1up, but this time Yakimenko knew he had a tough fight onhis hands and by the break was 8-6 up, going on to win15-10. It was a surprise to see the Russian lose focus inthe L16 and fall to Lapkes (BLR) 14-15. The semi-finals

saw Montano (ITA) beat Gu (KOR) 15-12 and Limbach(GER) take out Tarantino (ITA) by the same score. The finalwas dominated by the German in the early stages as hetook a 4-1 lead. But, in typical Italian style, Montano usedevery trick in the book to distract his opponent withoutbreaking any rules and by the break had picked up sevenconsecutive hits to go 8-4 up. A late rally from Limbachclosed the gap, but Montano was not to be thwarted andwon the title 15-13.

WOMEN’S SABREIn the L64 Chrystall Nicoll was always behind againstJozwiak (POL), trailing 3-8 at the break and losing 10-15.Undefeated in her poule, Joanna Hutchison was ranked23rd, but seemed nervous against Navarro (ESP) andwent down 9-15. Sophie Williams faced a tough taskagainst the 7th seed, Besbes (TUN), but was only 5-8down at the break before the Tunisian pulled away to win15-7. As 32nd seed, Louise Bond-Williams took on the33rd seed, Laberkai (BRA), and led 8-5 at the break. Thenin the second half she started falling short on her attackand the Brazilian pulled back to equalise at 14-all. Mostpeople agree that the referee awarded the last hitincorrectly to the Brazilian, but Bond-Williams was out14-15.

The semi-finals were contested by the top four in theworld, with Zagunis (USA) beating Gavrilova (RUS) 15-8and Velikaia (RUS) surprising world No. 2 Kharlan 15-7. The final saw Zagunis storm to an 8-3 lead at the breakand continue on to go 11-6 up. Then, extraordinarily,Velikaia clawed back the deficit and took the worldchampionship crown 15-14. Afterwards she said: “MarielZagunis had a special tactic for this match. When the scorewas 11-5, I finally found the solution. She did not changeher tactic, so I could close the gap. When it was 14-all, itwas the one who was stronger at that moment whowon.”

TEAMMEN’S FOILIn the L32, Britain faced Iran and took an early lead beforewinning comfortably 45-33. The next round was againstGermany, ranked one place higher at eighth in theworld. After three fights, the British team led 12-9, but thematch changed as Kleibrink took ten hits off Jefferies withonly two coming back in reply to give the Germans a 19-14 lead. Britain then wilted under the onslaught asGermany won the next three fights 4-1, 7-2 and 5-0,romping home to victory 45-26. In the placing matchesBritain beat both Brazil and Egypt comfortably 45-26 tomeet Ukraine for a fight off for ninth place. By the end ofthe sixth relay we were five hits up at 30-25 and never lostthe lead, going on to a convincing 45-33 victory.

Germany, who had knocked out the favourites Italy in thequarter-finals, fell to France in the semis, but beat Polandfor the bronze medal. The gold medal match was anenthralling contest, with France taking on China, worldNo. 2 seeds. The French were in fine form and after thefourth match led 20-15. But China fought back and Leihad a two-hit advantage going into the last fight 40-38.Le Pechoux was up for it and levelled the score at 44-all attime. Priority went to France. Lei, who had spent the fightsearching for his opponent’s blade and adopting a no-riskstrategy, now changed tactics and started going direct. Itworked. He scored the winning hit to win 45-44.

WOMEN’S FOILBritain had a comfortable first match against Puerto Rico, winning 45-16. But in the L16 they met Poland, ranked4th in the world, and went down 16-34 at time. Expectingto face Canada next, it was a nasty surprise to findinstead world No. 5 Germany, who had suffered anunexpected defeat against Canada 36-37. GB put in astrong performance to lead after the fifth fight, butultimately lost 34-45. Beating Mexico 38-22 was aformality, but a further loss to China 16-30 put them into14th place.

Predictably, the top two teams in the world, Italy andRussia, met in the final. Surprisingly, the Russians led35-34 after seven fights. Then Di Francisca gave Italy a2-hit lead going into the last fight, with the ice-coldVezzali anchoring the Italian team. Korobeynikova wasnot intimidated, quickly levelling the score and thentaking the lead 43-41. Vezzali struck back three timesto go 44-43 up and the Italians were all but home anddry. However, Korobeynikova was not finished andforced the Italian back with extraordinary footworkcontrol to equalise again at 44-all. Then, with anamazing parry-riposte to finish, she nailed the worldchampion to give Russia the title. It was one of the bestwomen’s team foil finals for several years and a greatadvert for the sport.

MEN’S EPEEAn interesting day full of upset and technical glitchesended with the medal matches. First up was the bronzematch between Switzerland and South Korea. No fewerthan five fights were called for non-combativity and thenat 14-all in the last fight the fencers simply stopped fencingwith more than 20 seconds left on the clock. Switzerlandeventually won 15-14 in the priority minute of what canonly be described as the dullest medal match ever.

The gold medal encounter between France, going for arecord eighth consecutive world/Olympic title, andHungary was rather more exciting. Closely fought from thestart, Imre edged the Hungarians 35-34 ahead with twofights to go. But Lucernay and Grumier took control togive the French team a 45-37 victory and a record thatmay never be broken.

WOMEN’S EPEEThe British team knew they ought to win their first matchagainst Hong Kong, but after six fights they were only 16-13 ahead. McGeever then came on for Albini in a fightthat saw 26 hits scored in 3 minutes to put Britain 31-24up. Usher and Lawrence saw it through for a 45-35 victory.Next up were the Romanians, ranked 1st in the world. They led from start to finish and won convincingly 45-

24. In the placing matches Britain faced the world No. 9,Russia, and put in a splendid display of grit anddetermination. Going into the last fight, they just trailed35-36, but Sivkova put in a professional display againstMcGeever and Russia won 45-40.

The bronze medal match was filled with drama. The Italiansled 21-18 after five relays, but in the sixth Duplitzer had anasty fall and had to be stretchered off the piste with aworrying neck injury. Luckily, she was not badly injuredand came back shortly before the match ended in Italy’sfavour 45-33. The gold medal match between China andRomania was an up-and-down affair with both teamsleading at different stages. The final relay saw theRomanians ahead 20-17, but Li showed tremendous fightto battle back to 26-all at time. Alexandru was not to beoutdone in the priority minute and with less than 30seconds left scored the winning hit for Romania.

MEN’S SABRERussia, the No. 2 team in the world, had an uncomplicatedpath to the final, taking out Iran in the L16, Hungary in thequarter-finals and Germany in the semis. The surprise wasthat they met Belarus who came from behind in theirsemi-final against Italy to win 45-43. The final was a one-sided affair that saw the Russians walk away with the title45-29.

WOMEN’S SABREBritain faced Australia in the L32 and led from the start,Sophie Williams completing a 45-33 win. The next matchwas the rather tougher prospect of Italy ranked fifth in theworld. The Italians immediately went 5-2 up and the gapjust widened. Chrystall Nicoll finished best of the bunchwith a -2 indicator as the team lost 25-45. First up in theplacing matches were Tunisia ranked just one spot belowthem at 13. An impressive start saw Britain leading 10-1and then 30-16, Louise Bond-Williams closing it out at45-26. Next was South Korea in the fight off for places9-12. Britain were only a hit behind after six fights, buthad dropped to four hits down by the ninth as the Koreanswon 45-41. The fight for 11th place against Spain startedbadly, but GB recovered to go 35-33 up after the seventhfight before winning 45-35.

Surprise of the day were Azerbaidjan, seeded 22, whoknocked out the sixth seeds France 45-44 and then thirdseeds China 45-43 before going down to Ukraine in thesemi-finals. They also gave the Americans a fright in thebronze medal match, collecting 40 hits before the USAfinally won. The final between Ukraine and Russia see-sawed back and forth, with the Russians taking the title45-43. ■

Attila Petschauer

TheSWORD20

It was interesting to read the article about NationalSocialism and Fencing in the last issue of The Sword.Sport, particularly fencing, was built into Nazi political

strategy as propaganda and education for the youngergeneration. The article mentions one of the greatHungarian fencers, Attila Petschauer – individual sabresilver medallist and team gold medallist at the 1928Olympic Games.

Petschauer's life and tragic death was dramatised in the1999 film Sunshine, an epic story of three generations ofthe Jewish Sonnenschein family from the Austro-Hungarian Empire through the Holocaust to the Hungaryrevolution of 1956. Starring Ralph Fiennes, who plays themain role in all three generations, the film looks closely atthe relationship between individuals and society. How theyadapt to the ruling power and whether they can be happyunder the actual political regime. What is more importantin life, to be accepted by the regime or to keep one’s ownidentity?

In the first part of film, Ignac, the first generation of theSonnenschein family, finds himself in a moral dilemmaaffecting both himself and his family. A talented younglawyer, he accepts the rules of the monarchy and, becausehis name sounds Jewish, changes it to Sors – the wordmeans Fate in Hungarian. This was so that he could takeup a high position in the Supreme Court, even though hehad to betray both his identity and his family roots.

In the second part of the film, Adam Sors, a celebratedfencer under the Hungarian-Nazi regime, also hides hisJudaism. In order to compete at the highest level, heconverts to Christianity, because no Jews are allowed inthe top military fencing club. According to the film, he winsgold for Hungary at the 1936 Berlin Games. But, in the faceof growing anti-Semitism, he finds himself facing the samemoral question: which is more important, his sportingcareer or his identity and religion?

This part of the film combines the lives of two of thegreatest Jewish Hungarian fencers, Attila Petschauer andEndre Kabos. The real hero of the Berlin Olympics wasactually Kabos who won gold in both individual and teamsabre events. However, Petschauer was not selected for theGames, although both he and Kabos had won Olympicgold four years earlier in Los Angeles.

Following the German occupation of Hungary during thelast years of World War II, most Jews were arrested and sentto concentration camps. But Petschauer’s reputation as acelebrated sportsman accorded him a special ‘documentof exemption’. One day in 1943, during a routine check ofidentification, he was arrested by the Hungarian policebecause he had left some of his papers at home.

Shortly after, Petschauer was deported to a labour camp inthe Ukrainian town of Davidovka and, during a line-up ofprisoners, was recognised by the commander of the camp.Taunted by the ill-educated and narrow-minded guards,he was told they were going to “make things hot for theJew”. One of his Olympic teammates, wrestling goldmedallist Karoly Karpati, witnessed what happened next.“The guards shouted: ‘You, Olympic fencing medal winner, let’s see how you can climb trees.’ It was midwinter andbitterly cold, but they ordered him to undress and climb upa tree. The amused guards ordered him to crow like arooster and sprayed him with water. Frozen, he diedshortly afterwards from hypothermia.” This deephumiliation and brutality is vividly depicted in the film.

The life of Endre Kabos also ended in tragic circumstances.Following the start of World War II, he was arrested byHungary's home-grown Nazis and sent to a labour camp, where he was kept captive for five months. But, with theaid of a compassionate guard, he escaped and joined theHungarian underground. There are several versions of his

death, which occurred on November 4, 1944, the daybefore his 38th birthday. According to one report, he losthis life defending the Margit Bridge, which separates thecities of Buda and Pest. Another account claims he waskilled when a munitions truck he was driving exploded ashe attempted to drive across the bridge, plunging thetruck and Kabos into the icy Danube. All the bridges hadbeen mined by the Germans to stop the advance of theRussian army.

The beauty of Sunshine is Ralph Fiennes performance. Hehad no previous experience of fencing, but took lessonsfrom Hungarian fencing masters and spent a lot of timepractising in fencing clubs in Budapest and London. Ontop of this, he had to convert to fencing with his left hand. When you watch the movie, it is hard to believe that thisman had never fenced before!

Fencers, who have competed in Hungary, may recognisethe main hall of the national sports centre in Budapest asthe location for the final of the ‘Berlin Olympics’. They willalso have had the opportunity of seeing the faces of manyof Petschauer’s ‘teammates’ and ‘opponents’, who wereplayed by top Hungarian sabreurs of the present day.Perhaps those who see this production may understandsome of the secrets of Hungarian fencing, and how thissmall nation has been able to win 33 Olympic fencing goldmedals – 20 individual and 13 team. ■

An Interview with Coach Egor

TheSWORD22

Where did you begin fencing and who wasyour inspiration?

My father was an outstanding swordsman. On dark nightshe would take me into the cellars, lit only by a singlecandle, put a rapier into one of my hands and an emptywine glass into the other. With only the light of the candleto help me, I would have to lunge at the cork in a winebottle, twist the blade and extract the cork, then catchprecisely one glassful of wine before lunging again toreplace the cork. I had to repeat this exercise until I hadfilled six glasses. In this way I learnt the basic principles offencing and wine tasting.

When did you win your first competition?

I was too young to remember, but my father tells me thatI showed such exceptional promise at such an early agethat he did not believe it would be fair for me to competeagainst other, less talented, fencers. I therefore practisedmy skills informally.

Several people have asked about yourqualifications.

I am proud to say that I have a full CRB record. I am a fullyqualified member of the Veterans’ Association and am theauthor of several works on fencing.

Where do you coach?

I give private lessons only, preferably over a period of at leastsix months. I am willing to travel to London for the seasonwith my trainee or even accompany him or her abroad.

Do you recommend any particular diet ortraining regime?

I certainly do. I refer you to my books, Coach Egor’s Guideto Sports Dieting for Beginners and Coach Egor’s Guide tothe National Fencing Academy.

How would you characterise your coachingtechnique?

Attention to detail. Many coaching courses omit suchessential elements as the tactical placement of kit bags in thecompetition venue and modern etiquette in the shower room.

If you could have one wish, with regard tofencing, what would it be?

More inter-club challenges. Few clubs seem willing to giveor accept challenges from other clubs yet it is just this sortof informal practice that most trainees need.

What do you see as the future of fencing inGreat Britain?

My vision is to see a World Beating International GoldFencing Centre of Excellence in every public school inBritain.

Do you think that there is a danger of fencingbeing seen as an elitist sport?

No. There is no danger in being elitist.

In your opinion, how could the BFA improveits services to members?

At the moment there are several gaps in the BFA’sprovision for its members. Properly remuneratedprofessionals should be recruited to fill those gaps. Where, for example, are the Director of Piste Etiquette, theDirector of World Beating Aspirations and the Co-ordinator of Directors of Importance?

What is the single most important piece ofadvice you would give to beginner, intermediate and elite fencers?

I give the same advice to all my trainees: “Think Egor!”

Are you looking forward to the 2012 Olympics?

Certainly. I have randomly selected seven of my traineesand invited them to buy elite Olympic training sessions.

Finally, Coach Egor, what advice would yougive to those fencers aspiring to representGreat Britain in the Olympics?

Get your debit card ready and give me a call! ■

Ralph Evans, who died of cancer on 3 September2011, at the sadly premature age of 62, was a fineclassical epeeist and a medieval historian of

distinction. He was also someone whose untiring effortswere largely responsible for sustaining the OxfordFencing Club over 34 years, eventually taking it to itspresent flourishing state. Born on 4 February 1949, hewas the son of Nano, a primary school teacher, and Tom,a research scientist at Dunlop. When Ralph was 15, thefamily settled in Kenilworth. He was educated as aboarder at Shrewsbury School, where he excelled inhistory and languages and first learnt to fence. He wenton to take a degree in history at Birmingham University.

A lifelong enthusiasm for the Middle East began whenhe backpacked round Syria with a school friend in 1969.During this trip they awoke one morning to find armedvillagers surrounding their tent, accusing them of beingIsraeli spies. However, Ralph expressed his passion forCrusader castles so well that hostility was transformedto a welcome with open arms.

Meanwhile his fencing progressed. As a member ofBirmingham Fencing Club, he was the West Midlandsepee champion in 1971 and 1973, and in 1972 he wonthe Nottingham tournament. For some years he went upto London to the Polytechnic Club, where he was a pupilof the top-ranking coach Bela Imregi, while alsorepresenting Wales in the Quadrangular and in aninternational event in Copenhagen in 1975. That year hereached the top level of British fencing, winning thepremier provincial Birmingham event and coming 6th inthe final of the British epee championship. Always amodel of classical technique, he was rightly described ashaving a “delicate elusive style” and used a French gripthroughout his career.

In 1976 he retired from serious competitive fencing togive priority to family life, having married GeorginaPoke, his Kenilworth next-door neighbour, in 1973. Thatyear they had settled in Oxford, where Ralph worked onThe History of the University of Oxford, writing andediting numerous other academic publications over thefollowing decades. Although retiring from the top-linefencing, he turned his energies to developing the Oxford

Polytechnic Fencing Club.Largely thanks to hisefforts, the club (nowsimply Oxford FC)started to retainexperienced fencers,as well as those newto the sport. A majorexpansion occurredin 2008 when Ralphnegotiated the useof Rye St AnthonySchool’s large newsports hall. The OFC nowbecame a genuine three-weapon club, with threeofficial coaches, a good deal ofinformal coaching and a remarkable proportion ofmembers taking part in matches.

Although he had declined an invitation to join the EpeeClub, Ralph often took part in the Club’s MarmaladeTrophy, held in Oxford, his high places demonstrating hiscontinuing prowess against tough opposition.

Ralph was very much a man of principle. A firm atheist, his rationalist moral code was the foundation of hisunselfish devotion both to the Oxford club and to hiswife, his three children and three grandchildren. Thoughquiet and calm in manner and private by nature, he wasfriendly to all and always interesting to talk to, andwithin the circle of family and friends he was, as hisfamily testified, “a loving, kind, brilliant and witty manwhom everyone loved”.

Piers started fencing as a student at EdinburghUniversity in the early 1960s, taught by Johnny Fethers, and joined the newly formed Stirling Fencing Club in1967-8. Not content with that, he started a fencing clubat Denny High School where he was principal teacher ofEnglish and took the Basic Coaching Certificate in foil insummer 1968, taught by the National Coach, BertBracewell. This bore fruit in the appearance of his pupilsin the first Schools' Championships Week in 1969 andevery year thereafter, winning over the years numeroustitles and representation in Scottish schools' teams. When the Scottish Schools Fencing Committee wasformed later in 1969, with Neil L'Amie at the helm, tomanage all activity in schools' fencing, Piers was givencontrol of the purse strings and he continued astreasurer for many years, while still finding time to taketeams of school fencers to matches in Aalborg,Denmark. He was elected to the committee of Scotland’sCentral Section in 1974 and was its convenor 1975-82.Meanwhile fencing administration at the national levelbeckoned: in 1976 he acted as financial manager andarmourer (he was quite technically minded as well) tothe Schools Week and as arena manager for both theSchools Quadrangular Championship and the seniorQuadrangular match between the home nations in1977.

In 1977 Piers was awarded the Sword of Merit inrecognition of his services as an officer of CentralSection, treasurer of the Schools Committee, arenamanager at the Quad and in various other capacities. This only spurred him on to further efforts: he served onthe business committee of SAFU (Scottish AmateurFencing Union, later Scottish Fencing) and as its

He wasalso co-opted asSAFU representativeon the AFA Board.During this time hehad moved to WallaceHigh School in Stirlingas Assistant Rector, andpromptly started a fencingclub. His computer andprinting skills enabled him to takeover the initial production and typesetting of The Point(Scottish Fencing's magazine) revamped under a neweditor. In 1986 Piers acted as Chef d' Equipe to the Scottishteam at the Commonwealth Games in Cardiff and thenext year was awarded the AFA bronze medal forservices to British Fencing. Commonwealth fencingopened a new door, offering a chance to indulge hispassion for foreign travel and in 1990 he was electedPresident of the Commonwealth Fencing Federation, with his old friend Neil L'Amie as secretary, reversingtheir roles of 20 years before. He held this post until2002. Piers was quite seriously ill for the last few yearsof his life, not that he let it hold him back much, but hemaintained close contact with his fencing friends, oldand not-so-old, to the end.

When I received Steven Paul’s book Epee Fencing.A step-by-step guide on achieving OlympicGold (with no guarantee you'll get anywhere

near it), I was expecting yet another volume of familiarfencing actions with accompanying line drawings and/orphotographs. What I found was a pleasant surprise. Thiswas not so much a manual of every possible fencingaction or pages of rehearsed movements between pupiland coach, but something quite different.

The book’s layout is divided into three main sections:beginner, intermediate and advanced. Beginners arecleverly introduced to every aspect of epee fencing, apart from learning the basic movements, such as theimportance of equipment choice and the safetyrequirements, with graphic reminders of what happenswhen blades break (I know. I was there in 1982 whenSmirnov died).

This is an important area where many a beginner has noidea of what to buy and is confused by the range ofproducts and manufacturers. Steven has kept the fencingactions in this section as simple as possible with theemphasis on correct execution and correction ofmistakes.

Intermediate fencers are introduced to competitions, their format and what to expect. More advanced bladeand fencing techniques are described, including the flick, prime, prise-de-fer, close-quarter fencing, foot hits andpommeling. Side ‘clinic’ boxes identify the next action, which is also accompanied by a photograph or two ofthe movement in action. Excellent idea. Fencers can alsoread about some extra fitness routines that they shouldinclude throughout their training.

The advanced section takes the reader into the realms ofthe international league and describes the commitmentrequired if one is to make it to the top. I like the ‘biogs’of international fencers in this section, all different in theway they train in order to reach their goals. No newmoves are introduced; instead Steven describes themental and physical toughness needed by top fencers. He looks at the psychological side of fencing and what afencer should be thinking before, during and after about. His warnings of the time and money involved atthis level will make many young fencers think twiceabout that Olympic dream.

The training plan shows the typical planning that everyfencer needs and the extra tough fitness programmeagain highlights this. But that’s what it can take to bethe best. In conclusion: this is a very well thought outfencing book. One that clearly shows Steven’sknowledge of the competitive fencing scene at nationaland international level, having been a top fencer himself.

If you are looking for a good coffee table book, thiswould suit you. I found myself going back and readingdifferent sections over again and then just reading the‘clinic’ sections another time.

DERBY UNIVERSITY CLUBLately there do not seem to be many letters sent to TheSword with items of good news, so I thought yourreaders might like to hear of my recent experienceinvolving a level of service which, I must say, reallysurprised me. I have set up a project to try to re-introducea fencing club into Derby University, which once had highquality fencers, but the club had gone into decline andthe sport of fencing was now largely unknown in theirprogramme.

As with all student sport, a huge number of names ofthose interested in taking up fencing were collected atthe Freshers’ Fair and I was concerned that I did not havesufficient equipment for them all. A 2-hour class was scheduled forSaturdays but, as the term got going, some found that getting out of bed tocome fencing was too much of astrain, particularly if there had been agood disco or party the night before.

The group whittled down to thosewho had a real interest and, as I wasconcentrating on epee, we soonneeded a recording box. There was nobudget for fencing and I thought Icould use personal hit indicators thatplug directly into the socket, but I wastold by Leon Paul that these were nolonger manufactured. I was thenadvised that the university wasorganising an open day forprospective students and parents andthey would be coming to see fencersin action.

On the Tuesday evening before theopen day, I attended a club wherefencers used a small transmitter boxwhich they carried in their pockets, with hits relayed to a recording box –the Hitmate system. As this wasconsiderably cheaper than aconventional apparatus and I waspersonally footing the bill, I emailedan order and asked if I could receivethe equipment before the followingweekend. Not believing that therewas any chance of this happening, Iwas delighted when my Hitmate was

dispatched almost by return and delivered by post on theFriday morning.

This is the level of service we should all expect but, sooften these days, it is necessary to chase up ordersseveral times only to be given promises which are neverkept. So thank you Hitmate for your excellent service. Theapparatus is performing very well and, as it comespacked in a carry case smaller than most laptops, it iseasily transportable, a major consideration for thosecoaches who have to carry equipment from class to class.Fencing at Derby University is every Saturday 10-12midday and is open to beginners or epeeists who wouldlike to do some extra training.

FENCING AND FASCISMThank you for publishing Mark Barton and David Hall'sarticle on the links between far-right politics and fencing. This should be seen as part of a wider cultural movementwhich associated individualistic sports with the extremeright: in Britain car-racing, mountaineering and aviationwere also strongly associated with conservative and fascistpolitics. What all four sports supposedly shared was anemphasis on the Strong Man rising above (sometimesliterally) the 'rabble' to demonstrate his 'superman'(ubermensch) qualities. As Barton and Hall point out, theethos of sport has always been attractive to right-wingregimes; it's not very long since the presidents of severalinternational sporting bodies, including the IOC, were openand official fascists, such as Juan Antonio Samaranch, formerly a minister in Franco's regime.

Although Barton and Hall's article concentrates onEuropean fascism, there's an untold story about the stronglinks between the Amateur Fencing Association and theBritish Union of Fascists – a story unlikely to be told due tothe destruction of the AFA's archives.

There's some consolation for the left-wingers amongst ourcommunity (including myself): Karl Marx was a fencer too.Sadly, however, he was an epeeist.

BIRTHDAY LETTER – 40 YEARS ONA letter written by Jeff Bermond to future Junior sabre championJonathan Lewis around 1970

GROUND, WATER, FIRE, WIND, VOID[Senryu for Musashi*]

“Fifty fencers … Me?I’ll be the one dressed in white

carrying a sword.”

Test weapons. Saluteopponent and referee. For oneself, seek calm.

Blade hungry in hand, fencing a man half my age, sweat turns grey hair dark.

Fourteen all: la belle.Last touch, a bout in itself.

Salute the moment.

Harsh breath. Clashing steel.Sa-ha! A sword point slips home.

We fall back laughing.

Robert Dawson[*A senryu is a traditional style of Japanese poem. MiyamotoMusashi (1584-1645) was perhaps the most famous swords-man Japan has ever produced, known for his mastery ofstrategy and tactics. He is best known in the West as the authorof the famous_Book_of_Five Rings, from the section titles ofwhich I have taken the headings of the individual verses.]

SUSSEX OPENThis year’s Sussex Open bucked the current trend and sawa resurgence in the foil, with numbers for the men’s eventbeing almost double that of 2010. This led to a finedisplay by some of Britain’s top foilists particularly at thesemi-final stage, with Sussex House’s Tom Hendrie linedup against Cyrano’s former Olympian James Beevers andyoung Alex Savin from Salle Boston against Crawley’sMichael Questier. Hendrie kept pace with Beevers untilthe halfway mark when Beevers’s experience began toshow and he never looked back on his way to the final. Inthe other semi, best cadet Savin managed to triumph overbest veteran Questier, but not without difficulty in whatwas a splendid match to watch. The final saw Beeversdemonstrate his real class with a devastatingly accurateflick to back at a speed that few would find easy tocounter; Savin fenced admirably, but there was to be noescape from a brilliant display of foil from Beevers.

The women’s event saw a mixture of top cadets pitchedagainst top veterans in an extremely hard-foughtcompetition. In the semis Crawley’s Sarah Steacy facedone of Britain’s most successful veterans, Portsmouth’sJenny Morris. This was a high calibre match with Jennyusing her skill and experience to win a place in the finalwhere she met Crawley’s Chiara McDermott, who had justovercome Boston’s Ayesha Fihosy in a wonderfully nail-

biting semi. This set up a veteran versus cadet final thatwas fenced superbly, McDermott’s youthful athleticismand superb lunging winning the day.

Jenny Morris was also in good form for the epee, lining upin the semis against City’s Laycy Elys. Once againexperience showed, with Morris making her way intoanother final after an excellent match against thetalented Elys. In the other semi, Salle Gadaski’s ChristineSteiner had a tough match against Haverstock’s OutiNevala before winning through to the final, where sheeventually took the title, relegating Morris to a secondrunner-up slot.

LTFC dominated the men’s epee with only Portslade’sGregory St Claire-Jones able to break their completedomination of the medal table. LTFC team-mates TomBennett and Tim Buzwell lined up against each other inone semi, with Greg against LTFC’s super-veteran HowardWest in the other. Both matches were extremely close, with Greg and Tom reaching the final. What a treat thisturned out to be, with both men matching each otherpoint for point, demonstrating grace, athleticism and skillin equal measure and above all sportsmanship of thehighest order. Tom eventually won by a point and fullydemonstrated why he is one of Britain’s finest fencers.

VETS NEWSWorld ChampionshipsBritain topped the medal table at the world championshipsin Porec, Croatia, with four gold, four silver and fivebronze medals, ahead of the USA and Russia. Coming ontop of an equally dominant performance at the Europeanchampionships, this meant that GB finished the year asthe most successful nation at veteran level.

That irrepressible duo, Graham Paul and Janet Cookseyretained their world titles. To win his 35-strong over-60 foilevent, Paul beat former over-50 world champion VladimirChubarov (GER) 10-6 in the last 16, Eiichi Ide (JPN) 10-8in the quarter-finals and Ray Sexton (USA) 6-5 in the semisbefore achieving a comfortable 10-4 victory over BrianCauston in the final.

Cooksey was No. 1 seed in her over-70 foil group of 15,but had a difficult fight in the semi-finals against LiaSaracino (GER), which she just won 10-9, before beating

another German, Barbel Gorius, more easily 10-4 in thefinal. She was also No. 1 seed in the epee event, beatingBettie Graham (USA) 10-7 in the semis and then edging toa narrow 10-9 victory over Marianne Hemplemann (GER)in the final. This was her tenth world title and brings herequal with Marie-Chantal Demaille of France with themost world championship gold medals.

Reigning European over-70 women’s sabre championCarol Wengraf won her first world title, dropping just onefight in a poule unique of nine to emerge ahead of team-mates Silvia Brown and Connie Adam.

To win his silver medal, Brian Causton staged his usualrecovery act from 20th seed, destroying the 4th seed Loero(ITA) 10-3 and No. 1 seed Takeishi (JPN) 10-5 before meetinghis nemesis, Graham Paul. Richard Cohen also had to becontent with silver after proceeding smoothly to the finalwhere he met a newcomer to the over-60 sabre group,Wang Yung (USA), who won 10-7 to collect his first worldtitle, having been a bronze medallist three times previously.

FENCING AT PACKWOODAt most schools, children get into trouble for startingfights, but Packwood children have been encouraged tostart fights all over the country and have been winningplenty too. On Tuesday evenings, the Packwood sports hallis filled with cries of, “On guard, Ready, Fence,” and theclash of swords as each point is fiercely contested.

Packwood Fencing Club has been running since currentcoach Nick Weston arrived 6 years ago and its ranks haveswollen each year. Graduates of the club are now captainsof fencing at Millfield and Shrewsbury Schools andanother fences for Japan’s cadets.

In November, a large crowd gathered around a shiny newaluminium sectional piste. Parents, teachers and pupilswatched as last year’s fencing captain, Francesca Hughes, who had organised fund-raising to help buy the piste, sliced the ribbon and declared it open. The piste was one

of six delivered that day, the others being dropped off atthe Olympic Test Event venue.

On 27th November, 155 fencers aged from eight toseventeen took part in the Packwood Leon Paul JuniorEpee Series, one of the largest junior fencing events.Competitors came from as far as Plymouth and Newcastleto take part. There were eleven pistes in the school sportshall and the new aluminium piste in the theatre.

Fencing began at ten o clock and the noise in the sportshall became deafening at around eleven when there wasnot an unused piste. Lunch was served in Le Café d’Art(the art room!), with both fencers and parents tucking intolarge quantities of Packwood lasagne. Soon after lunch, the knockouts started, with the finals being fought on thenew piste. In addition to the fencing, we raised £200 forthe Felix Fund, a bomb disposal veterans’ charity. It was atruly amazing day. Packwood fencers are looking forwardto starting more fights in 2012.

WIRELESS SCORING FOR YOUNGSTERSA wireless scoring system for use with plastic swords has been introduced by a British manufacturer to keep childreninterested in fencing once they have learnt the basic moves. Known as Mini Hitmate, from the makers of Epee Hitmate, the equipment provides a traditional fencing experience for young novices. Hit duration timing, double hit timing andlockout are all built in.

“Once we tried it out,” said a fencing coach, “the kids took to it with greater enthusiasm and commitment than thenon-electric version. …they loved it.” The idea is that youngsters develop a feel for real hit timings, whether or notthey are aware of it. This will benefit them when they progress to the next level.

Hitmate have tied in with the Italian plastic sword manufacturer, Nasycon, to supply the equipment through theirestablished distributor network. Two versions of Mini Hitmate are available, with foil or epee timing. Each set is pricedat £186 inclusive of VAT and delivery. More details at www.hitmate.co.uk ■
