It has been an extraordinary year, closing up with a formidable Festival and Awards Evening. The standard of work keeps rising, and I can report with great satisfaction that each project that I witnessed was better than the last: whether in live action, music theatre, live performance, television, documentary, mockumentary or animation. Testament to the wonderful talent is the ever growing number of awards both nationally and internationally. Well done to the new generation!

On JHB campus we are in the middle of a 15 million Rand building project. On completion, scheduled for April 2016, the new building with provide space for Dean and Heads office, marketing registry, post grad studies, space for the new BCOM and BSC degrees, seven new teaching spaces and an entertainment centre. Wayne Mansfield from KMH architects has design a most elegant building.

Head of Post graduate, Gina Bonmariage, as last year, facilitated the collaboration of two initiatives, the Images of Africa Training Programme for film schools, a two-year programme supported by the French Foreign Ministry and managed by CFI, Paris, and the annual CARA conference. This year the sessions were held in Marrakech at ESAV, the Moroccan Film School. Gina and the DEAN of the JHb Campus, Malcolm Purkey, enjoyed the privilege of travelling to Marrakech to attend these conferences. Both events were attended by delegates from film schools and teaching initiatives from over 10 African countries, including Morocco, Togo, Benin, Tanzania, Niger, Ghana, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, South Africa, Ethiopia. Bonmariage and Purkey presented very well-received papers entitled, ‘Structuring your project: planning for the long-term’ and for CARA, a topic entitled ‘Some provocations, 8 bullets for conversation as a contribution to ‘How does African culture influence the cinema on the continent’.This year registry reports a record enrolment of 820 students. This represents very significant growth over the past three years. The graduation class of 2014 attended their graduation ceremony on the

13th of March 2015 at the Linder auditorium, and were addressed by Mr Jack Devnarain, Chairman of SAGA. A total of 72 mict Seta bursaries were administered and to date there have been 94 bursary applications for the 2016academic year. The 2015 AFDA JHB awards was produced by the registry and took place at the UJ ARTS centre on Friday 4th December. Academic administration has been concluded and year end reports will be issued to the student portal on Friday 11th.

HC CONTINUES TO ENJOY HUGE GROWTH:Numbers on Jhb campus are up 200% up from the initiation year of 2013. 2014 was 100% growth on 2013. we expect 2016 to yield close to 80 students, enjoying a growth of 300% up from the first year.

HC launched a twin stream option for Jhb students in 2015, which worked very well. This package will be refined and implemented again in 2016.

AFDA CT are standing by to implement the twin stream options for the first time in 2016. HC is standing by to implement the technical stream at AFDA Durban in 2016.

HC Botswana launched HC in Botswana in November 2015 and will be offering relevant select modules from both streams during the course of their academic year. The HC co-ordinator from Botswana enjoyed a week of interaction and training on AFDA Johannesburg campus in preparation.

Bronwynne Hanger went to Cape Town early in 2015 to train the HC Co-ordinator on the first two modules, and to Botswana campus in the third quarter to interview potential HC co-ordinator candidates with the AFDA Dean.

Graduating HC students are being employed professionally in the industry on an ongoing although sporadic basis.

Ms Hanger was approached to run the AFDA PRO short courses and given 4 existing modules to start. This is a new development and a very exciting opportunity. The first short course on Professional

Editing ran successfully with 7 international students and is good to run to timetable in Johannesburg throughout 2016.

The Head of HC remains active in the commercial industry, mentoring emerging Directors ( including Raps Sigogile of Chocolate Milk and Cookies), researching and quoting international commercial productions ( mostly for Your x Girlfriend productions), and preparing projects for pitching. A huge creative project involving art, sculpture and dance for stage began as a corporate and creative collaboration.

HC Class co-ordinator for 2015, Nantie Steyn, will be transferring to the Film school to teach Producing from 2016. She has been an asset to HC and will be sorely missed.

Hulette Pretorius, current Producing lecturer at AFDA Jhb, will be joining HC JHB as technical stream class co-ordinator in 2016. Should HC present the numbers we believe are likely, a third class co-ordinator will be required.

Film School continues to go from strength to strength with a formidable staff challenging students to make better and better films.

Production Course made various contributions to AFDA’s academic output-value this year. These contributions have been divided under the following headings:

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS SCHOOL AWARDS:Francois Smit (HOD) was elected onto the SACOMM Executive Committee for Film. Tristan Jacobs (lecturer) will attend the Japanese Society for Theatre Research AGM in Tokyo, with Seijo University. Jerone Klow (assistant) was accepted into UNISA for further Studies.

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS:Tristan Jacobs published one play-text, had another read at a conference in America and toured a third. Timeous published in 1 Day for a Play (+ translation into French); A swamp of letters

(play text) – One Theatre World conference; and Hanamichi (KZN-Gauteng-Eastern Cape)

CONFERENCES ATTENDED – PAPERS AND PRESENTATIONS:Francois and Tristan attended SACOMM 2015, as well as the Documentary and Diversity Doctoral Spring School in Helsinki, Finland. All three Production Course staff members were present at the Inter-school Colloquium, JHB.

Tristan presented at the Landmarks ‘sustainability’ Conference, Helsinki and will present his PHD research proposal at Meiji University, Tokyo.Tristan published two academic articles, (m)asking the landscape, in Intellect Journal (Applied Theatre Studies); and Dialoguing through Godot in emergent South African theatre, in Interartive.

INTERCAMPUS ENGAGEMENT:Francois and Tristan compiled Term Booklets for other campuses, sourcing readings in conversation with them.

Francois conducted training of Cape Town & PE Production Course Staff; and was present at the inter-campus PC Heads Meeting.

JHB PC sends mark sheets and Group Documents to other campuses to engage in exchange. We also developed the Media/Stakeholders Event and Curriculum change to PC Y3 T4 for all campuses; and spearheaded the changing of the Marks Weightings for Y3 – which was adopted by all Campuses.

INTERNATIONAL ENGAGEMENT AND TRAVEL:Tristan’s play-text, Mabulandlela, received a staged reading at EMU, United States. Francois made preliminary contact to the HFF & Konrad Wolf about possible collaboration.

EXPANDED CURRICULUM 2015:2015 saw an undertaking of considerable proportions for both existing staff of the Live Performance School and newcomers alike. This expansion necessitated the merging of separate disciplines SCREEN and STAGE in 2nd and 3rd year under

JOHANNESBURG DEAN’S REPoRTMalcolm Purkey

the banner of one single discipline – ACTING. The wisdom of which

was strenuously tested between pedagogic requirements and practical implementation with a new Head of School frequently caught on the proverbial back foot.Term 1 presented a particular challenge in effectively communicating these changes to 3rd year students due to the misunderstanding between what could best be termed as ‘the old guard & a new order’. With ASC sign-off being a fait accompli LP team had no option but to pursue this mandate with the requisite vigour and rigour – the duress of a pending CHE audit within the first quarter of 2015 notwithstanding. Jhb LP acknowledges the invaluable support and cooperation of Liz Mills (Ctn acting HoS / new curriculum) and Clare Craighead (Dbn HoS / old curriculum) throughout this process. Mrs Jolette Richter joined the team in term 2 filling a significant administrative gap at 3rd year. HoS acknowledges her enormous input in stream-lining the 3rd year curriculum and Ms Camilla Waldman who single-handedly re-wrote the curriculum for 2nd year.

2nd Year mid-Semester 1: Three production projects of contemporary works – Laramie Project’, ‘Ruined’ and ‘For Colored Girls who Contemplate Suicide when the Rainbow isn’t Enough’.

2nd Year Graduation: Students formed eleven small companies for the ‘Celebration of South African Theatre’ season for Discipline Outcome.

3rd Year Experimental: Four productions for Experimental festival, three of which were adaptions of Shakespearean works, ‘Macbeth’, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and ‘Twelfth Night’ under a season entitled….“Of Witches, Fairies & Fools”. Music Performance brought the tally to four with an adaptation of Bertholt Brecht’s’ ‘Mother Courage and her Children” entitled “Mama Courage”.3rd Year Graduation: Music Performance students delivered six showcase performances. One solo STAGE outcome was green-lit to proceed to Graduation. A first for LP school, this Physical Theatre / Dance Performance piece ‘Journey’ represents a new direction for Live Performance. ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ was the flagship LP production for 2015 (non-outcome) directed by Alby Michaels.

The CMS students produced unique steampunk costume designs. Finally, LP, along with TV School, shouldered the responsibility for the Annual AFDA Awards ceremony with HoS, 3rd year lecturer, Vocal Coach & Music Performance lecturer officiating as overall Director, Performance Director, Musical Director and Band Leader respectively. The 3rd year Acting & 1st, 2nd and 3rd Year Music Performance students were required to present and perform as part of their Discipline Outcomes.

In spite of many setbacks, curveballs and shortfalls the word is out – Live Performance rocked in 2015!

POSTGRAD JOHANNESBURG:Postgrad Johannesburg had a complement of 40 Honours students in 2015. For the first time in Johannesburg, the 9 Live Performance students presented a stage production, TO4RM in Grahamstown. The production was work shopped by the actors, developed from their own stories under the expert guidance of professional director and Standard Bank Young artist winner, Prince Lamla.

The Documentary and Diversity Network (D&D) saw 14 students from 6 institutions including AFDA, Wits, UJ, NAFTI (Ghana) and ARCADA and University of Helsinki, Finland make two documentaries during their 9 weeks in South Africa, and another two in the same period in Finland. For the first time, D&D partnered in SA with a social entrepreneurship Re-Action to open access to and stories from sex workers within the theme ‘Cornered voices’. Re-Action has just received a prestigious award in the “STARS OF AFRICA AWARDS 2015” in the section Health and Wellness for their Key Populations Program with Sex Workers – Voices of Change Program. This award is arranged by the American Chamber of Commerce. One of the documentaries, Threads, shot in Klerksdorp, was selected for the Zanzibar Film Festival. Gina Bonmariage and Finnish student Bjorn Udd represented the film which was screened on the main outdoor screen.

Tanzanian Honours 2014 graduate represented their Honours graduation film Uthando at the Zanzibar Film Festival.

Honours graduate Miklas Manneke (Kanye Kanye) is finally in the US where he was accepted into a three month screenwriting programme at Emerson College to develop a feature film script.

2015 saw a new intake of 12 MFA students, a number of whom have focused their research on new and innovative work. MFA student Ernest Nkosi’s MFA film Thina Sobabili has been nominated for the Golden Globes, and nominated to represent South Africa for the Foreign Language Oscar. Laszlo Bene’s MFA feature film Assignment screened at the Durban International Film Festival and through Indigenous Distribution, is due to be released on the cinema circuit in February.

This year too saw the continuation of the Images Africa Training Programme, a programme for the development of staff training in films schools across Africa, now in its second and final year. In February. Gina Bonmariage represented AFDA at a partner’s meeting in Burkina Faso to define the programme for the year. 6 workshops will be held, each hosted in a different country. AFDA hosted a two- week editing workshop in July. Gina Bonmariage has successfully completed her MA in Applied Educational Leadership and Management through London University, Institute of Education. Her final dissertation gave rise to the drafting of a policy for professional development of staff at AFDA.

Beverley Clayton was an excellent addition to PG in 2015, taking on an extensive load of Honours research supervision, syndicate business planning guidance, and PG producing responsibilities.

Greg Homann served as part-time research supervisor and lecturer for both Honours and MFA

Beverley Kluckow, not only efficiently and thoroughly fulfilled her role as Postgrad Learning Coordinator, but has also provided a special support service as a trauma counsellor for needy students and staff.

AFDA JOHANNESBURG TELEVISION SCHOOL:2015 was a year of growth and success for the Television School in Johannesburg. Our numbers of second and third year television students increased with more than 30% from 2014, with a subsequent doubling of output in terms of graduation festival pilots. This year, our third year students produced four telenovela pilots for their graduation project. At least one of these productions received a standing ovation from an audience of around 250 people, and the Head of SABC entertainment, Jaqui Setai, is looking at our pilots with the eye on possible further development of some of the concepts.

For second year projects, we once again had a very successful series of events covered by our second year students in September, which included the Oppikoppi Music festival and a Varsity Football match. We also introduced factual, branded online content into the second year learning narratives, with the buy-in of JWT advertising agency which included a brief from National Creative Director Paul Strappini.

Our facilities also improved with the purchase of a new technical installation in one of our television studios, as well as the purchase of five Sony PMW400 cameras – state of the art HD cameras for studio and location recording.

Technical Lecturer Luscious Dosi was invited to two international film festivals in Toronto and Vancouver to present his award-winning documentary, “Across the colour bar.” He has also entered into the Masters programme at AFDA. Writing lecturer Bastian Hoehn was invited to Finland for possible inclusion in an international PhD programme in April this year. Edit lecturer Pauli van Dyk was commissioned for another series of her company’s SAFTA winning music format on the SABC “Jam Sandwich.” Technical lecturer Ryk Keyser was DOP for the SA version of the international format “The Great British Bake Off”, amongst others. Henriette de Villiers developed and content produced a factual entertainment show for Quizzical, and also helped to launch the new Media 24 channel, VIA, in the role of part-time commissioning editor and content developer.

This Isn’t Just A Race It feels like life has become such a race. A competition between fellow human beings. A yearning to be greater than your neighbor, faster. Who is going to make it first? Whose dreams are bigger and becoming a reality first? Who’s the first to fall in love, get married...and then... die? Who’s first to be the bravest, skinniest or prettiest? It seems like all life has become is a chase. Are we truly what they call the human race? What does this even mean? What about the journey, the destinations and the timeless moments of your loved one’s embrace? Maybe there’s more to just chasing the end of the rainbow. Maybe we should find out what that is. Maybe... THIS ISN’T JUST A RACE.
