In I ~7, 36 studen ts enrolled in the Colleg of Applied Sciences. Within 59 years this College has grown into a university with seven colleges, a graduate school', a community college system, and an enrollment of about 17,000. Instead of stagnating in it lake of past achievements, the Uni" v r ity of Hawaii ig c('lntinually improving, exp rim nting, and expanding to fulfIll its re ponsibilities to the individual student and to the community.

In the beginning th Univer..ity concentrated in providing speciali~ed ducation in the applied science . But realizing how rapid technological changes and develoFm nt are occurr~ng and how tudent n d an appr ciation of human valu the University i . placing mor em?~asi on a liberal ducation for the fir t two years of undergraduate work. The b li ~f in L...ss specializa tion i ba ed on th as umption that apr on will continu to incr a e his knowledge of hi p cialized field through evening cIa e and the rna ter' d gr program.

Th Univ r ity ha al 0 tried to fulfill its re pan ibiliti to the individual student by adding 300 n w m mbers to the faculty to low r the tud nt-teacher ratio. Another advantag for tudent ' is the acquisition of noted cholar on the UR faculty like the N b l-priz winning physiologist George von Bckesy.
