Studies& Research Center

Dear readers,

The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in an unprecedented crisis throughout the world and has caused widespread disruptions in normal operations across industries and life in general. Education industry is certainly no exception, having required sailing the rough seas. Of course, tough times come to everyone, but it is how we respond to the challenges, that make all the difference. CMRIT, being a dynamic institute, has responded to these impediments in no time and could navigate through the choppy waters, efficiently.

The brilliant leadership of Dr. Sanjay Jain, the Principal and Dr. Narasimha Murthy, the Vice-Principal has immensely helped the institute in general and the department of MBA in particular in bringing the people, systems and process into a new normal, by successfully adapting to the new teaching-Learning process (TLP), making best use of digital and online means of teaching and training etc.

And, I am truly happy that the various achievements of our students and faculty which are presented inside the current newsletter stands as a reflection to the performance of the department, giving a remarkable ending to the Covid-hit, already distressed semester i.e., July-Dec 2020.

Wishing a great start ahead to all in the New Year 2021!

Buyer behavior Post-Covid

Prof. Sandeep Kumar M

HoD and Associate Professor in Marketing

Post Covid, a new normal is expected to unfold. How will it

affect the consumer behavior? How will the brands respond?

We have witnessed a gamut of brands from across the product

categories have taken a plunge into, to offer the pandemic-

related product offerings to their consumers. Even those

stubborn brands have revised their product portfolio with

sanitizers, hand-wash etc into their kitty. On the other hand,

how the consumers are going to respond to the pandemic-led

shopping restrictions is something of interest to the marketers.

Three types of consumer behavior can be found post Covid:

a. The Liberated Buyer: These are the buyers who spring

up immediately after lifting the lockdown. They wish to

jump into their personal habits that have been suppressed

by the lockdown restrictions, such as drinking, smoking,

eating out at their favorite food-joint or having that

humble chai on the corner of the street. For some, it’s

like a revelation to buy household products or consumer

durables. This set of consumers will lead to a sudden

surge in economic activities in a given market.

b. The Responsible Buyer: These arethe ones who, by

nature, assume socially responsible. They have self-

imposed norms. Health and hygiene are paramount for

these people. Since there is a fear of second wave of the

pandemic all over, this set of consumers show more

interest to pile up large packs or sachets of hand-wash,

sanitizers, immunity boosters, health supplements, more

units of face-masks etc. These set of buyers always make

out planned purchase and avoid impulse buying..

LT

Y A

RT

ES

c. The Normal Buyer: These are the buyers who exhibit

routine buying pattern. They behave as if they have no

restrictions. Not restricted to bare necessities. They

continue their shopping spree and are least bothered

about the lock-down restrictions. However, they make a

very small size of the total pie.

The above classification is based on the author’s observation on

the current consumer trends and may not be accurate. However,

the current pandemic will bring about some changes in the

market and among the consumers, for sure.

Sectoral Impact of Covid19 on Indian Capital Market

Dr. Prakash B. Yaragol

Professor in Finance and DRC Head

The covid19 is the first and foremost human disaster in 2020

which infected lakhs of people in more than 200 countries

across the globe including India. It infected around 18354342

people and took the life of 696147 people across the globe as

on 5th August 2020 (as per WHO report). On 31st December

2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) identified the

first case of COVID-19 in Wuhan of China. The virus started to

spread in China during mid-January 2020 and later turned into

national crisis. Due to wide spread of the virus, the WHO

declared global emergency on 30th January 2020 and declared

the virus as pandemic on 11th March 2020.

The COVID19 includes both Severe Acute Respiratory

Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome

(MERS). The Centre of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

said that the COVID19 symptoms appear in human being within

2-14 days after a person exposed to the infected person. It is very

difficult to diagnose during early stages. Though the fatality rate

of COVID19 is very low compared to other viruses, such as

Ebola, Zika, but infection rate is very high. The stock market

behaviour during the post COVID19 was huge volatile. Only

during the first one or two weeks the market was performing

negatively but at later stage it recovered and reacted with wide

fluctuations. The sector most affected by the COVID19 was

banking sector particularly PSU banks, followed by realty, auto,

media so on. The sectors least affected were IT and pharma

sectors. Though stock market reacted negatively for some days,

there is no perfect correlation between COVID19 and stock

market movement. The reason for the negative movement of the

market was not COVID19 alone, it was accompanied by other

factors. Though stock market reacted negatively during post

COVID19, it bounced back when the central govt. announced

some relief packages.

Self-Motivation: It’s Right inside You

Prof. Preksha Yadav

Assistant professor in HR

In current scenario, everyone should understand the importance

of environmental, economic and social changes in all over the

world. Formerly, change in the personal and professional life

was gradual and personal vision and strategies for achieving

goals were not needed.

Now, change is the very first and important rule of today’s

knowledge based society, where personal vision and strategies

are prerequisite for the achievement of goals and existence. We

should self-examine ourselves, when we see who’s accountable

for our success or failure.

We must develop ourselves as a continuous learner and a

transformational leader, because being a follower means to fall

hopelessly behind the pace of world progress. We should

understand that, the power centers in the new knowledge era

will be the knowledge facilitators.

Unawareness and lack of self-motivation will be more risky than

in the past. There are new shorts of challenges in today’s world.

To overcome these challenges we have to have willingness and

ability. We should say ourselves, “I’m on the right track. I’m

doing great.”

We often used to point out our faults and failures. We must

become equally adept at recognizing our strengths and

attainments. We should not wait for any prize giving ceremony,

outside recognition, and mentor to acknowledge our work. Take

pride in your own work on a daily basis.

In today’s world, succeeding once or twice is comparatively

easy. Continuous improvement and development is difficult,

because we effortlessly tempted towards old habits. We should

think of the order instead routine. Order does not mean

accuracy, orderliness or every single thing absolutely in the

right place. Order is exactly opposite of the complexity; it is

simplicity. Order is setting a reasonable agenda and doing in a

day what you set out to do.

We should focus on our goals and consistently see the bigger

picture of the conclusive goal you’re working for and the

benefits that come with it. These actions will help you to

become a leader and a winner in your personal and professional

life. By mastering these simple things, you will be positioned to

be a change master in the new century.

Stock Market During Lockdown!!

Gopika Suresh and Soniya G

Students of Sem-3 Class 2019-21

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the global

economy of which India is a big participant. India is the

country with the second largest population in the world, so the

pandemic is especially dangerous for India. The COVID-19

affected almost all stock markets around the world. The world

stopped due to the virus outbreak and it pushed the world into

the great crisis of the century. The total lockdown and social

distancing are the only solution for preventing the spreading

of the virus until a vaccine is available. India also announced

the lockdown as a protective measure, but India announced a

little bit late and this is evident through the per-lockdown

period where AAR was negative. The announcement of the

lockdown was taken positively by the stock market that was

reflected in the stock market response; this is not an ideal

situation, but still there is a chance when the lockdown is

lifted and COVID-19 is eradicated from the country, the stock

market will recover. The study finds the evidence of a positive

AR around the present lockdown period and confirms that the

lockdown has a positive impact on the stock market

performance until the situation improves in the Indian context.

However, the result holds true for the select sample of BSE-

listed companies and during the period considered for the

study. It cannot be generalized for other traded stocks, nor in

other periods in the future or in different market environment.

The implications of this study are that investors can take

precautionary steps before trading in stocks during the period

of a lockdown.

ST

UD

EN

T A

RT

ICL

ES

Risk averse investors can avoid trading around the lockdown

to avoid the risk linked with volatility of stocks in the

lockdown period. The result of this study will benefit

investors as it may help them better understand and evaluate

the impact of the lockdown on stock markets caused by

COVID 19. Let us all hope that regulators in India will have

the courage to keep the stock markets open and that the

liquidity and price discovery in these markets will contribute

their tiny little bit to help individuals and businesses to cope

with the economic distress that is emerging today.

Effective Ways to Motivate Employees

Moncy Paul

Student of Sem-3 Class 2019-21

Keeping an employee in the loop is something else that is

important to motivation. When an employee feels he or she is

not up-to-date with what is occurring in the company or their

department, that is a message to the employee that says, you

are not important. That's not the kind of message that

increases motivation. Keep information flowing to each

employee; let them know what the company is doing and the

direction it is taking constant check-in with higher-ups when

working on a project undermines an employee's confidence

and willingness to think for themselves. It also deteriorates

motivation. Make sure plenty of sufficient resources are

available for an employee's use. Motivation cannot thrive if an

employee is constantly faced with having inadequate

resources to do the job motivation. Communicate with your

employee. Find out what interests them and what doesn't.

Speaking with an employee frequently shows that you care

about them in more ways than simply wanting them to keep

up with productivity. This will increase an employee's

motivation as well.

Create a fun and stimulating work place. Let everyone address

each other on a first name basis or have a casual dress day

Encourage employees to create a work environment that is as

comfortable as possible and not so office-like by bringing in

personal pictures and things such as plants, for example. This

will only promote creativity and, in the long run, increase

Points to Remember

Keep these points in mind and motivation will have a chance to

soar:

Employee contribution is important

Recognition from an employer is a must

Always respect of peers and colleagues

Keep your employees informed

Stay flexible and make sure the employee can avoid as

much red tape as possible

Constant check-in with higher-ups only leads to micro

managing and lack of motivation

Make sure an employee has sufficient resources

available to do their job

Create a fun and stimulating work environment

Make sure you communicate

Keeping these methods of compensation in mind is what

it takes to understand what it is that drives your

employee to want to do a better job. They must WANT

to do a better job or the work they do will never be as

excellent as it could be. If you are ever in doubt as to

what it is that drives your employee, simply ask, either in

a group meeting or one-on-one. In fact, asking an

employee what it is that motivates him or her is a good

idea right from the start. Then, you can always be sure of

what to provide.

Can We Motivate Employees through Recognition?

Tejashree

Student of Sem-3 Class 2019-21

I know how important recognition is in the workplace and in

life. We want recognition, we thrive on it and it makes us feel

good. Yet most of us do not give or receive enough of it.

I have talked to some of my friends on this topic who are

employees at various levels in different industries and most of

them said one of the most important things employees want is

recognition. They want to be appreciated, applauded and

recognised for the contributions they make in the company. Yet

sadly recognition is something most employees feel they don't

receive - at least not often enough.

Employee recognition is not just a nice thing to do for people.

Employee recognition is a communication tool that reinforces

and rewards the most important outcomes people create for

business. Recognising the strengths and contributions of those

around us and taking the time to let them know how important

they are is critical to organisational success. Human beings live

and grow with praise. Watch, listen and ask questions. The best

way to recognise others is to be a good observer. All employees

have some merits for which they can be recognised for. Yes it

can be hard and it takes time. Yet the rewards will outweigh

whatever time and effort it takes.

Recognition is management's job. While I agree management

needs to recognise their employees but we all can make a

difference by recognising and letting our coworkers know how

much we appreciate them. Recognition is everyone's job!

Recognition takes time and commitment. Recognition is a life

long journey both in our professional and personal lives. The

better we are at recognising others - the more excellence we'll

have in business and in life.

We are happy to inform you that at CMR Institute of

Technology, we are coming up with PPO (Pre-Placement

Offer) i.e. the students will be propelled to where they are

willing to get associated and continue to work in the same

company after successful accomplishment of their internship.

We believe this would help in achieving our goal “the right

candidate for the right company” since the company will have

sufficient time to analyze and assess the worth of the candidate

while, the student will be more committed to his/her work. In

other words, the company also acquires an opportunity to

handpick candidates as their employees depending on his/her

conduct and performance during the internship, expecting that

this might further strengthen our rapport.

At CMRIT we have a special program called TYL( Tie Your

Laces) in which they conduct online classes in this pandemic

situation, different activates like Resume writing workshop,

Mock Interviews and give guidance to each and every student

for a better job.

be a powerful tool for fundraising opportunities, marketing and

brand awareness. However, if you want to tap into those

benefits, you need to find a way to maintain the relationship you

own with your students even after they receive their degree.

During this pandemic CMRIT MBA department conducted the

online Alumni meet where all the MBA students participated,

students and provided guidance in the area of career growth and

including contribution of alumni in placements, conduct of

MANAGEMENT JOKES - Gopika Suresh

What do you call really tall expenses?

She wanted to see the payroll.

Why did the financial analyst give his daughter gifts today

instead of waiting until Christmas?

Because he understands “Present Value”.

What kind of debt did the secret agent issue?

Bond, James Bond.

Why was the banker bad at playing music?

Because they only knew how to play a Treasury note

What do you call a vendor that never tells

What do you call a marathon for Accounts Payable

Settlement runs.

If money really did grow on trees, what would be everyone's
