Alfred “Freddy”Los Banos Revered veteran dies at 76 A sniper may have shot Army Master Sgt. Alfred "Freddy" Los Banos during the Korean War, but the wound never stopped him. Paralyzed from the waist down by a sniper's bullet in 1950 while serving with the 5th Regimental Combat Team, Los Banos used a wheelchair. He overcame his disability and served on numerous veterans' organizations and traveled the world attending meetings and other veterans' observances. Los Banos, 76, died Tuesday Aug 31, 1999 at St. Francis-West Hospital. Los Banos also fought the Japanese as a member of the U.S. Army's 1st Filipino Regiment during World War II after he was drafted in 1944. "He was a soldier's man," said his brother, Domingo. Sen. Daniel Inouye described Los Banos as "Hawaii's number one veteran. He served in the Philippines with very little fanfare and publicity. For those of us who have been in uniform, we are well aware of his heroic contributions. His presence at gatherings of veterans will be sorely missed. I lost a good friend." "He is the kind of individual who grows on you," said Bob Hamakawa, head of the Korean War Veterans Club. "Even with his handicap, he never complained. "I put him on a pedestal. I really admire that man. He was a real role model." After serving in the Philippines, Los Banos was discharged in 1944, but re-enlisted four years later. On Aug. 14, 1950, Los Banos was wounded. After 16 months of rehabilitation at several Army hospitals, Los Banos was medically retired as a master sergeant. He served with the Veterans Administration as a counselor and later as director of prosthesis for the Pacific region. In April 1990, Los Banos underwent amputation of both legs below the knees because of infection in both feet. Retired Brig. Gen. Irwin Cockett, who grew up on Kauai with Los Banos, said he always considered Los Banos as his mentor. "He was my drill instructor when I took basic training at Schofield and we went to Korea together," said Cockett. Later, as both worked on various veterans' observances, Cockett, who once served as head of the Hawaii Army National Guard, said, "I never did anything without consulting him first because he always knew the pulse of the veterans' organizations we were working with." Survivors include his widow, Caroline; one son, Alfred "Buddy Jr.;" two daughters, Pamela Sandridge and Winifred Mattos; two brothers, Domingo and Bernard; two sisters, Beatrice Ranis and Conchita; and 8 grandchildren. Los Banos was one of the founders of the Disabled American Veterans chapter in Hawaii, served as commander and state commander. He also organized the chapter of the Military Order of Purple

Heart serving as its first commander. In 1990, he helped lobby a bill through the Legislature for special automobile license plates for Purple Heart recipients and all veterans. In 1994 President Clinton appointed Los Banos to serve on the American Battles Monument Commission. Friends may call from 6 p.m. Sept. 9 at Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary. A tribute from various military organizations will be held at 7 p.m. On Sept. 10, services will be held at 10 a.m. at Holy Nativity Church. Stanley Batkin, 82 Neurosurgeon Stanley Batkin brought patients to his medical school class for what a colleague remembers as a memorable learning experience for the fledgling doctors. “He was just wonderful in portraying to students what a caring physician should do and how a caring physician should act,” said Martin Rayner, who shared a neurosciences class with Batkin for years at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. “It was a joy to watch him speak to patients. He would talk to the patient in front ofthe whole class and you would feel he was unconscious of the students, but of course it was to them that he was speaking. Ignoring neither side, not talking down to either side ... it was wonderful to watch. I respected his knowledge as well as his people skills and his wisdom,” Rayner said. Batkin was a surgeon at Kaiser Medical Center for 17 years until his retirement in1979. He continued as a professor and researcher at the university until he was 82.He died Tuesday, July 13, 1999 in Honolulu at the age of 86. Former UH medical school dean Terence Rogers said Batkin “was greatly admired by his colleagues and friends, highly skilled as a surgeon and neurologist. An older generation of police officers knew him, he dug a lot of bullets out of heads.” Part of his personal history that wasn’t well known was that, although American, Batkin served during World War II in the British army. “He trained as a doctor in Edinburgh and there he was attached to the Black Watch, a Highland regiment,” said Rogers. “He was built like a bear and had been a Golden Gloves titlist as a young man. He was a very gentle person, a kindly man.” Dr. Frank Tabrah, who did research with Batkin on spinal cord injuries, and on the causes and controls for cancer, said, “He was truly an intellectually curious person. You don’t see many like this anymore. He was always asking why something works or doesn’t work. He was quite instrumental in getting significant grants for the medical school. “He befriended medical students and residents. He was available any time to sit down with them and work with them about problems,” Tabrah said. Batkin also pursued his research on neurophysiology in Israel. He did research on cancer and on cell regeneration at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem for five years, said his daughter, Maya Finer of Israel. He also did work at a Haifa University. He was born in New York. He earned a bachelor’s degree from New York University and received his medical degree from the Royal College of Edinburgh, Scotland. He was a surgeon in Syracuse, N.Y., before moving to Hawaii in 1962. He is survived by his wife Helen; sons Bill and Fred; daughter Maya Finer; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Temple Emanu-El. Burial will be in Israel.

Dr. Anna Maria Brault, one of the driving forces in the hospice movement in Hawaii, died Thursday, Nov 18, 1999. She was 85. “It is difficult to characterize how much she contributed to our community,” said Rose Ann Poyzer, executive director for the Hawaii Association for Homecare. Brault died the way she said she always wanted to surrounded by her loved ones in a hospice she helped found

— Hospice House, part of Hospice Hawaii. “She was like a mother to me,” said Ross Rasmussen, hospital coordinator for Hospice Hawaii. “When we became aware that she had become seriously ill, of course we told her we wanted to take care of her. What else could we do? She had cared for so many, many others.” Brault, with several others, especially her husband, Dr. Roger Brault, helped found Hospice Hawaii 20 years ago this month. Along with St. Francis Hospice, with which Brault and husband also were closely involved, Hospice Hawaii represented one of the pioneering concepts of hospice care in the Islands. Along the way, Brault also contributed her talents to the public sector, serving as Honolulu health director from 1981 to 1983. In 1979, she was director of the communicable disease division of the state Department of Health. She specialized in internal medicine. But it was hospice care that always claimed her heart. Anna Maria Guidara, who was born in Boston, and Roger Brault, a French Canadian, met and married as students in 1954 at the University of Ottawa School of Medicine. They were co-valedictorians of the 1957 class. Anna Maria gave her speech in English and Roger gave his in French. “One of the wonderful things about her was her marriage to Roger,” Poyzer said. “They absolutely adored each other.” The Braults also were very active in the Roman Catholic Church. “Their religion undoubtedly was a big part in how they saw themselves as physicians and how they addressed the issue of death,” said one friend. In fact, in the late 1970s, the Braults worked with Mother Teresa at her headquarters in

Calcutta, India. Brault had said the couple’s experiences as volunteer physicians in developing countries influenced her to pioneer hospice care in Hawaii. In the late 1970s, the Braults worked for four years with Project Concern International, an agency fighting infant mortality and malnutrition, serving in Haiti, Guatemala Colombia, Indonesia and India. In an interview in the early 1980s, Brault said it was during this time she and her husband first began to understand the concept of true “death with dignity” — a way to die more naturally, away from the high-tech and sometimes isolating atmosphere of modern hospitals. “The way we perceived death and the way death was perceived in developing countries was completely different,” she said. “People died with their families, and we really think we have seen a better way to die — the way I want to die, at home with someone I love at my side.” She is survived by her husband and several nephews and nieces. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Dec. 2 at St. Anthony’s Church in Kailua. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. A reception will follow. Her ashes will be scattered at 12:30 p.m. off Lanikai. Desmond Byrne - Citizen activist and small businessman Desmond Byrne died at home yesterday Aug 3, 1999, his 64th birthday, after an extended illness. Funeral services are planned for Aug. 14. "He had been diagnosed with a very aggressive form of brain cancer a year ago," said his widow, Jo Kamae Byrne. Until his illness last year, Byrne kept a diligent regime: getting up every morning at 5, poring over the morning paper, analyzing documents and writing letters. Last fall he had stepped down as chairman of Common Cause, and he and his wife had planned on focusing on their own business -- Honolulu Information Service -- and their own lives. Besides his wife, Byrne is survived by a daughter, Myra Byrne McBride, of Berkeley, and a son, Jahan, also of Berkeley. In 1995, Byrne was named Small Business Person of the Year by Small Business Hawaii for his tilting at the windmills of government. Born in England, Byrne was trained as a certified

public accountant and earned a master's degree in business administration from the University of Hawaii. He worked as an accountant in Hong Kong, a bank controller in the Bahamas, and treasurer of Malia International. He also was financial and administrative officer of Computab Inc. In 1982, he formed Honolulu Information Service, which researches businesses, industries, government and public records. It also tracks legislative bills and helps mainland companies search for assets in Hawaii. Gerald Kato, University of Hawaii journalism professor, described Byrne as "a very dedicated public sort of person, sort of a public conscience, so he served the community very well. "It's unfortunate that people like him have to pass away under these kinds of circumstances." Kato said Byrne's business paralleled the work of Common Cause. "I think that served a greater public good."
