STRONG AND SMART
Principal’s Report
The term has started very well and I have seen some
fabulous, exciting learning in and around the classrooms.
The staff have been involved in some very useful
professional learning. On the first staff development
day we all went to Inverell for Positive Behaviour for
Learning training with a number of other New England
schools. On Tuesday we completed professional learning
with the Boggabilla teachers on the New English
Curriculum and Literacy Strategies.
We also had two Ipad trainers come out from Tamworth
on Wednesday to present Ipad training to our staff.
Today we are off on our emu egg hunt and on Friday the
seniors will have the Cross Country at Boggabilla.
Our Aboriginal Education Program will be on most
Fridays. Len Waters is organising the program and we
will be doing a range of cultural activities.
I can’t wait!
Have to stop now and do something…

.
This Monday, 13 May, we are holding a
Mothers’ Day Morning Tea at 11:00 am.
We would love all the mothers and
grandmothers to join us to celebrate some
very important people – YOU!
* CLASSROOM NEWS *
This term the students of 4/5/6 will be learning about ‘Tradition and Heritage’. This involves
the students finding out about significant Aboriginal people from the past who paved the way
for the future in various ways: in sport, art, dance, music, land rights, equal rights and many
other aspects. We are also looking at the Aboriginal weaponry and science, particularly about
boomerangs and astrology.
This unit, although short in weeks, will hopefully increase the student’s awareness of the
importance of their culture.
On Tuesday this week, the students of 4/5/6 visited Tamworth for a Leadership conference.
Although it was intimidating for our students, they all got involved with the conference to learn
more about being ‘good’ leaders. We were very proud of Kirsty McIntosh for walking up on stage
to share her answer to a question around values. Congratulations Kirsty for showing her
leadership qualities. To all the other students who participated and had to get up early- thank
you for being responsible and ready to ‘have a go’.

UNINTERRUPTED LEARNING BLOCKS
Every day Reading and Writing lessons run until morning
tea time and then we have Maths until lunch time.
It is very important that all children arrive at school by
9:00am so they do not miss their reading and writing
lessons.
Parents and carers are always welcome to come and
visit at any time during the day.
We would ask service providers and agency
representatives to restrict their classroom visits until
after 1:00pm.
This term we are beginning the implementation of the Positive Behaviour for Learning
Program. The Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a school-wide behaviour initiative
currently used in many schools in New South Wales and across Australia. It employs a whole
school systems approach to address problem behaviour and reduce its effects on student
outcomes and on the school community as a whole. PBL encourages positive behaviour from
students, which has been shown to improve their self-concept and motivation to learn.
Implementation of the PBL is a stages process and has to be carried out with consultation
from the parents and community. The first area we will have to discuss is the values that
our community would like for our school.
I have included a list of values for you to have a look at so you can indicate
which values you feel are most important.
The list is on the last page of this newsletter.
Please tick () the 5 values you think are the most important for our
school.
Return your list to the school.
We will collect this information from parents and community and collate it.
We will need to narrow it down to three (3) for the program.
This is an outstanding program that will ensure that our students are in a positive
consistent learning environment.
I encourage you to have an input into our school.
Our students are our future.
Let’s make it great for them!
1. Avoid nagging – either children or adults 2. Discipline young children by removing them from the situation –
hitting only makes things worse – use the opportunity to teach them about correct behaviour
3. Explain to children that parents need time to discuss things too. Children often interrupt but as they grow older they will realise they can remember things to tell you later and will interrupt less often. (They LOVE interrupting when you’re on the phone!)
4. Share daily activities – let your child and help prepare it. Share a story. Have meals together at the table (without TV)
5. Care for yourself! You need time out and rewards to cope with the demands of being a parent. Plan for these regularly, go for a walk, take a bubble bath, play your favourite CD. If you care for yourself you can more easily care for your children.
