MEASLES UPDATE

We would like to remind you again of the continual concerns the Auckland Regional Public Health Service has around the potential spread of measles in our school and local communities. The number of confirmed cases of measles in Auckland has continued to grow, with the majority of these being in South and West Auckland.

Measles is highly infectious and can spread quickly and easily through breathing, sneezing and coughing. Measles symptoms include cough, runny nose, fever, sore red eyes, then a rash. Measles can make you very sick.

The best protection against measles is to be vaccinated with two doses of the mea-sles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. One dose of MMR will protect around 95% of people and two doses will protect about 99%. The MMR vaccination is free for eligible people.

If you are concerned about measles call the Healthline on 0800 611 116 or call your GP. Please do not just turn up to your GP or after hours or emergency department as you could potentially infect others.

In the last two terms a group of ten students from Auckland Girls’ Grammar School has been learning about the importance of vocational professionalism at the prestigious company Kerridge & Partners, based in Shortland Street.

The Careers Navigator programme has a unique format whereby leading companies opens their doors to secondary school students to give a comprehensive insight into values, work ethic and general etiquette which are expected in the business world.

The programme is offered in conjunction with the Graeme Dingle Foundation and is of great benefit to participants as it connects school students with mentors from companies such

as Kerridge & Partners, Perpetual Guardian and Openly In-vesting Limited. This has helped students become familiar with the office environment including a boardroom set up and most importantly a chance to learn from executive staff who are working in successful New Zealand businesses.

As a highlight of the programme the participants were able to experience a practice interview with staff at Kerridge & Partners, during which they gained invaluable feedback about their resumes as well as interview performance.

Congratulations to all participants who successfully

graduated from the programme:

WORD—THE FRONT LINE COMPETITION

l to r Gracina Kints, Lianne Brown, Maria Lavemai, Krisha Kumar and Fine Aholelei

Congratulations to the AGGS team which recently won Word - The Front Line Poetry Grand Slam Students Competition.

In May this year our girls proved themselves in the auditions winning a spot in the top 14 schools (out of 30+ teams who auditioned around Auckland). They then moved on to the semifinal rounds. After attending workshops and a Slam Camp, our team proved itself again in the semi final heat earning a top 3 spot in the Grand Slam, making it the first time AGGS has made it this far in the competition!

And over the weekend of 14 to 15 September, our team be-came the champions, beating 6 other schools. Another first for AGGS. We are very proud of the team. The stories they shared were honest and brave, and our team truly exemplified AGGS pride.

STRINGS WORKSHOP

On 5 September we hosted a String ensemble workshop with students from AGGS, Dilworth, Howick College and Edgewater College. It was led by our itinerant string teacher, Mr. John Seager.

YEAR 10 BUSINESS CHALLENGE

While seniors sat their exams, seventy Year 10 students were taking part in a 3 day programme called The BP Busi-ness Challenge. Working in teams of 8, the students had to imagine a new good or service, write a business plan to produce, finance, market and sell their product and then launch the idea in a pitch on the final day. Six successful business men and women judged the quality of each team's business strategy. The Judges included AGGS old-girls Vaitaua Mauala and Marie Holo, representing Auckland Council and BNZ, as well as representatives from BP, Xero and Multitudes.

The judges were impressed with the enthusiasm, knowledge and confidence of all of our girls. The winning compa-ny. "JOY", aimed to create a self-motivational mirror which would help improve mental health and body im-age. "Global Paradise" came a close second with their concept of developing eco-bottles to convert methane into a renewable energy resource. Husna Nazari was also presented an award to recognise her leadership skills.

Business Challenge was a surreal experience. We developed our communication and collaboration skills and built-up our confidence. We learnt how to work in a team effectively and how to manage our time. Throughout the 3 days, there were many challenges that we overcame through commitment and enthusiasm. Business Challenge taught us that there are no age limits if you want to start up your own business. We are grateful to have been part of the BP Business Challenge. It was lots of fun! Bea and Husna

The business challenge was an exciting, creative and challenging experience that taught me alot. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Farzi

AGGS SPORTS

Winter sport is just about finished and we are looking forward to our summer sporting activities. Here is a run down of the just finished sporting season:

BADMINTON

our 5 teams finished the Badminton season as follows:

Congratulations to our Term 2 Badminton teams for an

outstanding term.

We entered 3 teams in the Term 3 Badminton competi-

tion. Our B team (Georgia Perfect-Tait, Yen Vi Nguyen,

Esther Blackmore and Ranae Bishop) maintained a

high standard of play to win the grade again. Our AGGS

White and Yellow teams have one more game in Term 3

which will decide where they finish this season.

A special thank you to Georgia Perfect-Tait and Lumina

Mendonca (Team Captains) for your great leadership of

our Badminton Teams in Term 2 and 3. Well done!

Thank you very much to Ms Krishnan, Ms Sabbage and

Ms Towes for supporting our Badminton girls this year.

BASKETBALL Our U19 Team finished 8th in the Championship Round

and our U17 Team finished 3rd in their Championship

Round.

Our U17 team went through to the Auckland Champs

and finished second (making the final and losing to Car-

mel College) FANTASTIC job on placing 2nd in Auckland.

Our Premier team had a new coach and new group of

players this year, mainly Year 9 and 10 girls.

Basketball at AGGS is rebuilding and we are working

towards reclaiming our place in the Premier Grade.

Thank you to our coaches, Bruce Boyce (Premier) and

Year 12 students Laetitia Tuaiti, Imogene Noble and

Gracina Kints (U17) for guiding our basketball girls this

year. Thank you Ms Sinclair and Ms Dugdale, our

teachers for Basketball. Your support for the sport and

the students has been great. It has been a tough road

this year but we will get there. Well done all.

FOOTBALL

We fielded two Football teams this year. Our First XI

finished 5th this season with 5 wins and 4 losses, our 2nd

XI finished 6th with 3 wins, 4 losses. Very credible efforts

strength we have seen this season next year.

HOCKEY AGGS joined the newly formed 9-a-side format of Hockey this

season. Our girls started slowly but finished 2nd in their grade

and advanced to the final against Marist College 2XI. After a

closely fought match our team won the match 1-0—winning the

inaugural 9-a-side competition. FANTASTIC work from Mr Mor-

gan and our girls. Winners for 2019.

KI-O-RAHI We competed for the first time in the Ki-O-Rahi Championship

this week. Our team struggled in the first game against eventual

winners Nga Tapuwae but our girls improved very quickly leading

every game at halftime before experience beat us.

Our playoff for 11th/12th was against Rutherford High School

which we won 24-11.

Our team showed great fight and determination coming up

against strong co-ed schools. I am very proud of how well our

girls played to finish 11th. Our next move will be to ensure we

source a boys school to support our girls to play in the Mixed

grade.

LACROSSE A failure to field full strength teams at key stages of the season

prevented the Lacrosse team from emulating last year’s perfor-

mances. Despite this the team has shown real progress through-

out the season and has played some truly fantastic Lacrosse.

Our team finished 5th in Division 3. Special thanks to former stu-

dent Athena Nonoy and Year 13 student Lex Macgregor-Hay

who have shared the coaching role this season.

NETBALL Final Netball Results for 2019

Netball at AGGS is rebuilding and we look to build on the success

we have had this year moving into 2020.

We had one senior team in the Premier 2 grade this year. The

team played very well, despite a number of injuries, to finish in

5th place.

Congratulations to our Year 9 and Year 10 teams this season.

Thank you very much to Barbara Whenuaroa, Lilly Stowers, Sam

Hunia and our volunteer coaches/managers for supporting net-

ball in 2019. You have all done a fantastic job this season.

RUGBY This year our team played in the 10-a-side competitions. After an

unbeaten first round topping Pool A, our rugby girls achieved suc-

cess by making the top 6 round. Unfortunately, the second round

proved to be tough for our team eventually winning one game

out of 4 to miss out on making the semi-finals. Despite the loss

the team had a good season winning 6 games and losing four.

Thank you very much to Mrs Stowers for your time and commit-

ment this season in coaching our rugby girls. Fantastic work.

We look forward to the Rugby 7s in Term 4. We have one team

for Rugby 7s and this will be U15s grade.

RUGBY LEAGUE This has been a good year for Rugby League. At the end of the

round robin, our team made the top 4 playoffs. In the semi-finals

AGGS had to play defending champions Sir Edmund Hillary Colle-

giate. After a tight tussle, our girls won the match 34-20.

In the final, the girls came up against Aorere College. It was an

exciting game, we scored the first try to be up 4-0, then Aorere

came back to score 20 unanswered points in the first half to lead.

In the second half, Aorere scored twice straight after the break

and by then the margin was 30-4. Our girls were determined to

fight, which they did and then we scored 5 minutes from full time

to reduce the margin by 10. but Aorere maintained their lead to

win by 30-20.

Following on from this, NZ Rugby League invited our school team

to take part in invitational fixtures at NZ Secondary Schools Rugby

League nationals in Bruce Pulman Park. However, due to the

measles outbreak the tournament was cancelled.

Special acknowledgement goes to coaches Dave Rewi and Richard

Kamuhemu for taking our girls to success this year. Awesome!

Olympic Ambassador – Kayla Imrie

AGGS has been very fortunate to have had World Championship

kayaker, Kayla Imrie visit our school and run a session with our

sports committee sharing experiences about her life as an Elite

athlete. This is a part of the Olympic Ambassador programme

organized by the NZ Olympic Association.

Our sports committee enjoyed her visit and was impressed by

Kayla’s journey. We look forward to more sessions in Term 4 with

Kayla and having her share her knowledge and mentor our AGGS

students.

INDIVIDUAL SPORTING SUCCESSES Congratulations to the following students for their sports successes in Terms 2 and 3. For the very best results your daughter should be preparing for these examinations during the October break.

Some of the ways you can support her exam preparation include: Ensuring that she has a quiet working space where she can study Encouraging her to make a study plan. Discussing areas of improvement with her teachers at the upcoming Parent-teacher interviews on Thursday 17 October.

Helping her manage her time and commitments, to ensure she has time for regular study Encouraging her to attend tutorials offered at school and to ask her teachers for help Reminding her to access revision resources that are available to her through the school - on the school’s intranet and the internet and at regional libraries.

It is important that your daughter attends all her classes in Term 4 to benefit from the revision programmes that will be running in the faculties. Please contact us if we can help in any way.

We wish your daughter every success in her external examinations.
