Display Panel

This section describes configuration using the display panel when the printerfunction is selected.

Important❒ The machine switches to offline when you make settings when the machine

is online. After you complete the setting, the machine switches to online au-tomatically.

❒ If you make a setting when the machine is offline, it will stay offline after-ward.

❒ The function items displayed serve as selector keys. You can select or specifyan item by pressing it lightly.

❒ When you select or specify an item on the display panel, it becomes highlight-ed.

❒ Keys dimmed (for example, ) cannot be used.

1. Operational status or messagesDisplays current machine status, such as"Ready", "Offline", and "Printing". Infor-mation about the print job (user ID anddocument name) appears in this section.

2. [ffff Online] key/[ Offline] keyWhen you press these keys, the machineswitches between online and offline.When the machine is online, it can re-ceive data from the computer.When the machine is offline, it cannot re-ceive data from the computer.

3. [Form Feed] keyPress to print all the data left in the ma-chine's input buffer.

Note❒ When the machine is online, the status

appears dimly.❒ This function is not available with the

RPCSTM printer language.

4. [Job Reset] keyPress to cancel the current print job.If you press it when the machine is offlineand Hex Dump is selected, Hex Dump iscanceled. See "Printer Features Parame-ters", Printer Reference 2.

This section gives instructions for connecting the machine and computer, config-uring the machine, and installing software.

❖❖❖❖ When operating the machine with a parallel connection, USB connection, or IEEE1394 (SCSI print) connection• Connect the machine and computer using a parallel cable, a USB cable, or

an IEEE 1394 (SCSI print) cable.

Note❒ "Network environment" describes a situation where the machine is con-

nected to a computer via Ethernet, wireless LAN, or IEEE 1394 (IP over1394).

Connecting the Machine

Requirements

Before using this machine, make sureall environmental and electrical re-quirements are met. Connect the ma-chine to the host computer using theparallel port, network interface unit,or both.Make sure all cables, connectors, andelectrical outlets necessary to attachthe machine to the host computer ornetwork are at hand.

Connecting the Machine to the host using the parallel cable/IEEE 1394 (SCSI print) cable

Connect the machine to the host com-puter using the parallel port or op-tional IEEE 1394 interface board. Thismachine does not come with a paral-lel cable to connect the machine to thehost computer.The machine's parallel interface is astandard bidirectional interface. It re-quires a standard IEEE 1284 compli-ant 36-pin parallel cable and a parallelport on the host computer. Make sureyou purchase the appropriate cablefor the machine and your computer.

Note❒ Do not use a parallel cable that is

longer than 3 meters (10 feet).❒ Rating voltage of the interface con-

nector: Max. DC 5VFollow the procedure below to con-nect the machine to the host computerusing a parallel cable or IEEE 1394 in-terface cable.

Important❒ Before connecting the machine and

a computer using an interface ca-ble, make sure the machine is notoperating, and then turn off themain power switches of the ma-chine and computer.

❒ Be sure to use a specified interfacecable. Other cables may cause ra-dio interference.

AAAA Turn off the main power switchesof the machine and computer.

Important❒ Before turning off the main

power switch, see “Turning Offthe Power”, General SettingsGuide.

BBBB Plug the cable into the connectoron the machine’s interface.

CCCC Plug the other end of the cableinto the connector on the compu-ter’s interface.

DDDD Turn on the machine's main pow-er switch.

EEEE Turn on the computer.

Note❒ When using Windows 95/98/Me/

2000/XP and Windows Server2003, a printer driver installa-tion screen might appear whenthe computer is turned on. Ifthis happens, click [Cancel] onthe screen. For more informa-tion, see p.16 “Auto Run”.

The machine and computer arenow connected. The printer drivermust be installed next. For infor-mation about how to install theprinter driver, see p.16 “Installingthe Software”.

Connecting the machine to the host using a USB cable

You can connect the machine to thehost computer using a USB interfacecable when the optional USB 2.0 inter-face board is installed in the machine.This machine does not come with aUSB interface cable. Make sure youpurchase the appropriate cable for themachine and your computer.

Follow the procedure below to con-nect the machine to the host computerusing a USB interface cable.

AAAA Connect the USB 2.0 interface ca-ble to the USB port on the rightside of the machine's back cover.

BBBB Connect the other end to the USBport on the host computer.

Note❒ The optional USB 2.0 interface

board is supported by Windows98 SE/Me/2000/XP, WindowsServer 2003, Mac OS 9.x, andMac OS X Classic mode.• For Windows 98 SE/Me:

Make sure to install “USBPrinting Support”. If USB 2.0is used with Windows 98SE/Me, only a speed equal tothat of USB 1.1 is possible.

• For Mac OS:Mac OS supports only thestandard USB port. If USB 2.0is used with a Mac OS, only aspeed equal to that of USB 1.1is possible.

Setting Paper on the Bypass Tray

This section gives instructions for set-ting paper on the bypass tray. Use thebypass tray to print onto OHP trans-parencies, labels, thick paper, and en-velopes that cannot be loaded in thepaper tray.

Note❒ When loading letterhead paper,

pay attention to its orientation. See“Orientation-Fixed Paper or Two-Sided Paper”, General SettingsGuide.

❒ Paper within the following dimen-sions can be set in the bypass tray: • Vertical: 90.0-305.0 mm (3.54 in-

12.01 in.) • Horizontal: 148.0-600.0 mm

(5.83 in.-23.62 in.)❒ Be sure to set the paper with the

side you want to print facing downin the bypass tray.

❒ When loading OHP transparenciesor thick paper in the bypass tray,make the paper setting using thecontrol panel or printer driver.

❒ The number of sheets that can beloaded in the bypass tray dependson the paper type.

Limitation❒ The following functions are disa-

bled when printing from the by-pass tray: • Duplex printing• Auto Tray Select• Auto Tray Switching• Rotating Collate• Staple (when the optional unit is

installed)• Punch (when the optional unit

is installed)

Important❒ When printing using the printer

function, original images are al-ways rotated by 180 degrees (theorientation of images to be printedis opposite to that of the copierfunction). When printing onto pa-per with specific orientation re-quirements, such as envelopes andletterheads, make sure to rotate thepaper feed orientation to 180 de-grees.

❒ Be sure to set the paper size usingthe printer driver when printingdata from the computer. The papersize set using the printer driver haspriority over the one set using thedisplay panel.

BBBB Adjust the paper guides to the pa-per size.

Important❒ If the paper guides are not flush

against the paper, skewed im-ages or paper misfeeds mightoccur.

CCCC Gently insert paper face up intothe bypass tray until the beepersounds.

Note❒ The beeper will not sound if it is

turned off. Gently insert paperuntil it stops.

❒ Do not stack paper over the lim-it mark, otherwise a skewed im-age or misfeeds might occur.

❒ Open out the extender to sup-port paper sizes larger than A4L, 81/2"×11" L.

❒ Fan the paper to get air betweenthe sheets to avoid a multi-sheetfeed.

❒ When setting an OHP transpar-ency, make sure that its frontand back sides are properly po-sitioned.

❒ Select paper type when printingonto OHP transparencies orthick paper (over 105g/m2). Fordetails, see p.15 “Setting thickpaper or OHP transparencies”.

DDDD Select the paper size.

Note❒ You can set paper size using the

printer driver. The followingprocedures are not necessarywhen setting paper size usingthe printer driver.

❒ The paper size set using theprinter driver has priority overthat set using the display panel.

❒ When the printer driver is notused, make settings using thedisplay panel.

❒ Thick paper and OHP transpar-encies are delivered to the exter-nal tray.

❒ Thick paper and OHP transpar-encies are delivered face up onthe top of the preceding page;therefore, the prints need to berearranged into the correct or-der. To avoid this, select [Re-verse order print] in the RPCSprinter driver settings to deliverthe prints in the correct page or-der.

Setting custom size paper

Note❒ Custom sizes can also be set using

the printer driver. The followingprocedures are not necessarywhen setting custom sizes usingthe printer driver.

❒ Custom size settings set using theprinter driver have priority overthose set using the machine's dis-play panel.

❒ When the printer driver is not used,make settings using the display panel.

BBBB Press [Printer Features].

Note❒ Paper settings can also be set using

the printer driver. The followingprocedures are not necessarywhen setting paper sizes using theprinter driver.

This manual assumes you are familiarwith general Windows proceduresand practices. If you are not, see theoperating instructions that come withWindows for details.The procedure for installing the print-er driver depends on the connectionwith the computer. With a parallel orEthernet connection, Quick Install isalso available. With a wireless LANconnection, check the machine andcomputer are communicating proper-ly and then install the printer driverby following the procedure used foran Ethernet connection.• For details about the parallel/Eth-

Auto Run

Inserting the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive starts the installer auto-matically. The installer helps you in-stall the following printer drivers andsoftware easily.

Note❒ If “plug and play” starts, click

[Cancel] in [New Hardware Found],[Device Driver Wizard] or [Found NewHardware Wizard] dialog box, andthen insert the CD-ROM. The [NewHardware Found], [Device Driver Wiz-ard] or [Found New Hardware Wizard]dialog box appears depending onthe system version of the Windows95/98/Me/2000/XP, WindowsServer 2003, or Windows NT 4.0.

❒ Auto Run might not work auto-matically with certain operatingsystem settings. If this happens,launch "Setup.exe", located on theCD-ROM root directory.

❒ If you want to cancel Auto Run,hold down the {{{{SHIFT}}}} key (if youroperating system is Windows2000/XP and Windows Server2003, hold down the left {{{{SHIFT}}}}key) while inserting the CD-ROM.Keep the {{{{SHIFT}}}} key held downuntil the computer has finished ac-cessing the CD-ROM.

Setting Up Options - PCL 5c and RPCS

If the machine has options installed,you should set the options using theprinter driver.

Limitation❒ Under Windows 2000/XP and

Windows Server 2003, changingprinter settings requires ManagePrinters permission. Members ofthe Administrators and Power Us-ers groups have Manage Printerspermission by default. When youset up options, log on using an ac-count that has Manage Printerspermission.

❒ Under Windows NT 4.0, changingprinter settings requires Full Con-trol permission. Members of theAdministrators, Server Operators,Print Operators, and Power Usersgroups have Full Control permis-sion by default. When you set upoptions, log on using an accountthat has Full Control permission.

When setting up options, you shouldaccess the printer properties dialogbox from Windows. You cannot setup options by accessing the printerproperties dialog box from an appli-cation.

Important❒ When the printer driver is being

installed, do not turn on the powerof other printers connected to thesame bus, or connect another IEEE1394 device.

❒ Before uninstalling the printerdriver, be sure to disconnect theIEEE 1394 interface cable from thecomputer.

❒ SCSI print must be enabled usingthe display panel. See "InterfaceSettings/IEEE 1394", NetworkGuide.

❒ SCSI print using the optional IEEE1394 interface board is not sup-ported by Windows 95/98/Me, orWindows NT 4.0. If the “plug andplay” function starts, click [Cancel]in the [New Hardware Found] or [De-vice Driver Wizard] dialog box.

Note❒ If [Found New Hardware Wizard] ap-

Using Adobe PageMaker Version 6.0, 6.5, or 7.0

If you use the machine under Win-dows 95/98/Me, Windows 2000/XP,Windows Server 2003, or WindowsNT 4.0 with Adobe PageMaker, youneed to copy the PPD file to the Page-Maker folder. The PPD file is the file with the exten-sion “.ppd” in the folder “DRIV-ERS\PS\WIN9X_ME\(Language)\DISK1\” on the CD-ROM. The [WIN9X_ME] folder, inside the [PS]folder is for Windows 95/98/Me. Usethe folder at a level appropriate forthe operating system you are current-ly using.The third folder, “(Language)” maybe renamed with an appropriate lan-guage name.Copy the file with extension “.ppd” tothe PageMaker folder.• For PageMaker 6.0 default instal-

lationThe directory is “C:\PM6\RSRC\PPD4”.
