Spelling the long vowel sound ‘u’ (u, ue, ew, u-e)

Parents: This week we are going to be reading words with the Long

vowel sound ‘u’. We will be recapping our knowledge of the ‘u ‘yoo’’

sound and the different ways of writing the ‘u ‘yoo’’ sound.

• The children should know that ue, ew and u-e make the yoo

sound (statue) but sometimes they also make the oo sound

(blue).

• The children should be confident reading words with ue and

ew graphemes (argue, few).

• They should practice reading words with the split diagraph u_e

(cube, tube). In a split diagraph the ‘e’ is silent. We say that

the ‘e’ is magic because it makes the letter say its real name

(u),

Vocabulary: Phoneme- a sound.

Grapheme- the way a sound is written.

Diagraph- two letters that make one sound.

Split diagraph- when a diagraph is split by a consonant

e.g ‘tube’
