A Christmas Miracle!— Th e Music Conservatory of Coeur d’Alene —
Th e elegant music of violins, cellos and violas reverberated through the historic Hamilton House on Monday night, fi lling the atmosphere with Christmas melodies and great works of the masters. Th e Music Conservatory of Coeur d’Alene hosted it’s inaugural recital in a beautifully restored main recital hall, as guests enjoyed attending through a Facebook Live presentation, as well as limited numbers in person. Jan Pellant, conductor for the Coeur d’Alene Symphony, led his group of talented students in a performance of classical works as students of brass instruments warmed up for their performance in another room of this magnifi cent musical edifi ce.
Since the purchase of the building in October by committed investors, the Music Conservatory executive board and numerous hard working volunteers have been busily painting, repairing and restoring the historic Hamilton House as it becomes the Music Conservatory of Coeur d’Alene. Donations of musical instruments, supplies, furnishings and more have come in at just the right time, and cash donations for start up expenses, lease payments, etc. are beginning to pick up the pace as more and more of the dedicated community of Coeur d’Alene and surrounding areas catch the vision for the tremendous value such a school will bring to our town and the musical community.
“Th e Music Conservatory of Coeur d’Alene will serve the mission by creating an infrastructure of teachers, classes,
performers and events. By collaborating with other music schools, it will share teachers, students and events to create the magic of music that will inspire participants and audience” states Julienne Dance, Executive Director. “I want to express my gratitude for the time, talents, ideas, and expertise in many areas that helped us stay alive as we pressed forward with the conservatory,” Dance said.
As the residents of Coeur d’Alene have rallied over the past year to save this beautiful home, we now have the privilege to support this vital non-profi t center for quality musical instruction and cultural outreach. The Maiden Hunt Series, Part 1 – Gretchen and Henry

Mentoring is woven in the fabric of hunting. For millennia, the tradition has been passed down through generations and shared with friends. For the tradition to continue, the each generation of hunters are tasked with passing the torch to the next.
Fish and Game’s Maiden Hunt Series explores how rewarding it can be for hunters to pass on their passion for the outdoors, and shares the stories of new hunters, from completing their hunter education and seeking out a mentor to experiencing their fi rst hunt. Each hunter comes to hunting with a diff erent perspective, background, concerns, and interests. From balancing a love of nature with the emotional experience of harvesting an animal, to following in family footsteps, these short fi lms explore the realities of becoming a hunter and illustrate how hunting is so much more than the harvest.
Th e fi rst video of this three-part series follows the journey of a mother and son, Gretchen and Henry, as they take on their fi rst deer hunt. Led by mentor Ted Koch, these beginners learn what hunting is all about in hopes of carrying the tradition forward.
Q: Are you planning on hunting again this year, and if so, how has your mentored hunt helped you prepare for this season?
H: I am. My mom and I are thinking about going on an elk hunt. We don’t know many details about it, but it’s defi nitely on the list, and something I want to do again. I feel pretty confi dent about hunting now. Going out with my mentor helped me realize that it’s something I can do, and that it’s not out of my ability range. It helped me prove to myself that I could do it.
G: I think that the mentored hunt really gave us a good idea of how to identify some good locations to fi nd animals. Also, how to fi nd the publicly available information that is provided by Fish and Game to understand what is available, and work through the process of selecting a unit or the type of hunt we want to do. Everything was new to us, so it got us a little bit more familiar with the resources available. Prior to the mentored hunt last year, we went to a Backcountry Hunters and Anglers seminar that directed us to a lot of those resources, but doing it with our mentor, actually working through the process, has been really helpful. We’re going through that process with Ted again this year, and we’re planning to hunt together again this fall. Will, the videographer for the Maiden Hunt series, is going to try to join us, too.
Q: What were some of the most valuable things you learned from your fi rst hunt?
H: It really taught me how value the life of whatever animal I’m taking, and also gave me an understanding of the animal and my role as a hunter.
G: Th at you really have to get up really early and be there when the sun comes up. Getting there a little bit late is not the best idea! Also, the idea between hiking and hunting — sometimes, we would hike and go really fast, and sometimes, in certain locations, Ted would tell us it was time to start hunting, to slow it down and get really quiet, and look for these certain things. Really, keying in on landscape position, and where animals might be found, and kind of changing the way you’re moving and what you’re looking for at those specifi c times.
Q: Looking back, what do you wish you understood better before your fi rst hunt?
H: I was surprised by how long the day was. I wasn’t expecting an 11-hour hike in and out. Other than that, it wasn’t too bad. Th e
Backcountry Hunters and Anglers class prepared me for almost everything I needed.
G: I think the things that the things I wish I would have understood better before on the mentored hunt are probably the things I still wish I understood better now, like really digging into the resources that are available to plan the hunt and the location. A better understanding of how to use those resources to plan hunts is something that we’re still wanting to understand better, and something that our mentor is continuing to help us with.
Q: Much of the hunting tradition is rooted in family. How did being a mother/son team aff ect your hunting experience?
H: It was amazing having my mom there. It made the experience that much closer to home. Last year, everything was foreign to me, because I’d never been hunting, and my mom was there to settle me down and go through the process with me. We’re the only hunters in the family. My dad and sister are outdoorsy, but they’ve never tried hunting, and I don’t have any grandparents, aunts or uncles that I’m aware of who are hunters either.
G: It was really cool. I was super proud of Henry and his ability to learn from our mentor, and have a successful hunt. We don’t have any hunters in our family, so this was a whole brand new experience, and I was just really proud of both of us for trying something new that we were both interested in, and putting all of the pieces into place so that we could learn about it and give it a try. Being with Henry out there was awesome. It made me feel a lot more connected or confi dent just being together. It was just really my pleasure to see him be so successful and share that experience with him
Q: Aft er harvesting a deer on your fi rst hunt, can you share some stories about preparing and eating wild game?
H: I’ve had jerky and wild game birds before, but never venison or anything that I had personally harvested. It was a completely diff erent experience, knowing that I had harvested that meat. Th e fi rst meal we made was heart fajitas. It was delicious, it was amazing, and I loved it. We ate all of the meat that deer provided us, and it’s been gone for a while.
G: I’ve had wild game before, elk and venison that people had shared with us, but it was a totally diff erent experience – it didn’t feel the same as knowing that Henry had harvested that animal, and the meat that we were eating was something he directly harvested. If someone shares wild game meat with you, that’s a wonderful thing, but having the person in your family harvest that animal, and to be there when the animal is harvested, you really appreciate it. We consumed all of it. It was delicious, and we were so mindful about how we prepared and processed it. It really illuminated how valuable that meat product is when you harvest it.
Q: Having a year to refl ect on your fi rst hunt and preparing for your next hunt, what has surprised you most about becoming a hunter?
H: Th e hunter community. I have friends that hunt, and every time I mentioned to them that I went on my fi rst hunting trip, they were super supportive and interested in it. People I’ve met within the larger community of hunters are super understanding of the fi rst hunt, and how important it is to someone.
G: I think that what surprised me the most is probably the community of people that helped us along the way – the volunteers that showed up at the Backcountry Hunters and Anglers educational seminar to show us how to butcher and process an animal, all the people that we’ve met like Ted and other hunters we’ve met. Th ere is a community of people who are very interested in supporting, and really stoked to meet people like Henry and me who are just novices, and are very welcoming.

Ghosts of Christmas Past— Carol Horning Stacey —
Weighted down with heavy packages, I shuffl ed into the Coeur d’Alene Post Offi ce and found only one person ahead of me in line, amazing at this season. Talk about luck! And as I left , the line had grown suddenly to its normal seasonal length – stretching to the door.
Maybe this stay-at-home Christmas won’t be so bad aft er all. We’ll miss going to the “Messiah” and “Th e Nutcracker.” Maybe the TV stations will come to the rescue, with reruns of traditional stuff . We’ve already come across “A Christmas Carol” fi lm, the one with Reginald Owen as Scrooge, and there are so many more. But there will be no parties, and for those of us who are cautious, traveling is out.
We’ll miss live music. Th ere have been great years, times when a crowd sang Christmas carols in the living room, or even sang out into the street. A couple times we improvised a small orchestra in the living room, getting some use out of all those music lessons. Every school had a seasonal program, maybe two or three. Years ago the Coeur d’Alene High School chorus would sing carols in front of the city Christmas tree, then on Fourth and Sherman.
Th e loggers would bring in a huge tree to set up on the south side of the intersection. Sometime in the fi ft ies or sixties, the City decided to have a permanent living tree, planting it at the foot of Fourth and McEuen Field. Old timers said it was too puny, but it grew. During the Vietnamese War it was renamed Th e Freedom Tree. It came down for changes at McEuen Park.
We can safely bake. Baking is allowed even in a year of living dangerously. Th ose with a talent for making fudge can bring cheer to their neighbors. A gift idea for the cook who doesn’t yet have one: a modern thermometer such as you see on cooking shows, one that gives the exact temperature in big readable numbers.
Meanwhile down in Boise, Idaho’s Attorney General Lawrence Wasden, a lawyer who dislikes frivolity in court, said Idaho would not join the lawsuit fi led by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton – the suit asking the Supreme Court to invalidate the Electoral College votes of Michigan, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin so that Donald Trump can go on being president.
Idaho’s two Congressmen Mike Simpson and Russ Fulcher are among the 121 members of Congress who signed a legal brief supporting Paxton’s eff ort. Not actually signing anything, Governor Brad Little issued a statement supporting the Idaho Republican Party’s backing of the Texas lawsuit, but his support does not mean Idaho is joining the lawsuit. Never one to walk in lock-step with the Governor, Lt. Gov. Janice McGeachin fi led an amicus brief supporting the lawsuit.
Th e argument of invalidating elections in the four states was based on their pandemic-related changes in election rules. But many states made changes this disease-haunted year. As I recall, Idaho’s May 19th Primary was full of oddities: no voting at the polls, problems with wording on ballot applications, late mailings of ballots to the voters, extending the date for ballot receipt until June 10th, etc. Will our incoming Legislature be legitimate? Be safe. Stay out of hospitals and courthouses.

popular movie theaters in Coeur d’Alene. It was called the Huff Th eater. He also owned the Dream and Liberty, both built in the early 1900s. Th e fi rst movie featured in Huff ’s new theater was a “Midnight Summers Dream,” starring Spencer Tracy. Th e
Huff Th eater was purchased by Edna Wilma Simons in 1940 and was renamed the Wilma Th eater. It was in operation until the early 1980s. Th e last movie to be shown in the Wilma was “Victor Victoria,” starring Julie Andrews and Robert Preston. Th e Liberty was closed in 1946. Th e Dream was in operation until 1957.

family and friends. Th e United States Postal Service has long been known as a Santa’s helper, and we take this role seriously. Here are some tips to help keep people, pets and packages safe.
People: Last year, 18,684 Postal Service employees experienced a slip, trip or fall. Carriers are encouraged by the Postal Service to wear proper footwear, avoid areas of patchy snow or ice, avoid wet leaves and mud or cracked or uneven surfaces.
Postal customers also have safety responsibilities. Last year, 6,000 Postal Service employees and 4.5 million Americans were attacked by dogs. Here’s what you can do to help:
• If a carrier delivers mail to your door, keep the family dog secured.
• Children and other family members should not take mail directly from carriers in the presence of the family dog, who may perceive the carrier as a threat.
• If a carrier feels threatened by a dog, or if a dog is loose or unleashed, the owner may be asked to pick up mail at a Post Offi ce until the pet has been restrained.
Packages: Th e Postal Inspection Service is asking for your help to keep your mail and packages safe. Here are a few tips:
1. Don’t leave your delivered mail and packages unattended.2. Going out of town? Hold your mail at your local Post
Offi ce using the USPS Hold Mail service on www.usps.com.3. Customize the delivery by authorizing the carrier to leave
it in a specifi ed location. Visit usps.com, enter the tracking number in Track a Package, and select Delivery Instructions.
4. Secure the shipment using USPS Special Services by requiring a signature at the time of delivery.
5. For your most valuable packages, opt for Registered Mail service, which receives special handling from mailing to delivery, with documentation at each step.
6. If you have a home security camera system, ensure it captures activity at your front door and mailbox, and alert your local Postal Inspectors of package theft s.

Th e summer of 2020 saw the collapse of one outbreak of Douglas-fi r tussock moth in southern Idaho near Smiths Ferry. However, new outbreaks in northern Idaho forests were found in August 2020. Th e damaged trees are easily seen from Interstate 90 and have a reddish hue to the tops and outer branches.
Damage was observed in two general areas in Idaho; in the Silver Valley along the I-90 corridor, and east of Clarkia. In Silver Valley, surveys found few egg masses and evidence of parasites and virus in the populations near Wallace and Mullan. Th is indicates the Silver Valley moth populations appear unhealthy and will likely collapse next year. In contrast, the Douglas-fi r tussock moth populations found east of Clarkia near the Floodwood State Forest and south of Avery appear to be healthy and are building, and defoliation will probably increase next year.
About 13,700 acres of defoliation occurred in northern Idaho in 2020, but damage also occurred in western Montana. Aerial surveys mapped over 73,000 total acres of defoliation of Douglas-fi r and grand fi r between the two states.
Previous Douglas-fi r tussock moth activity: Douglas-fi r tussock moth is a native caterpillar throughout the West and typically has outbreaks in northern Idaho every 8-12 years that last 2-4 years. Th e last outbreak in northern Idaho occurred from 2010-2012 and reached 68,000 acres of defoliation in 2011. Southern Idaho is on a diff erent outbreak schedule. Th e recent southern Idaho outbreak aff ected over 200,000 acres at its peak in 2019.
About the Douglas-fi r tussock moth: Th e caterpillars eat green tree needles, which is called defoliation, and prefer to feed on grand fi r and Douglas-fi r. Aft er severe defoliation, entire trees or treetops may die, but trees usually make a full recovery from light or moderate defoliation. Outbreaks end on their own due to caterpillar starvation, natural enemies such as parasitic wasps and fl ies, as well as a viral disease that is specifi c to this species.
Monitoring for Douglas-fi r tussock moth in previously impacted areas: Th e Idaho Department of Lands and U.S. Forest Service - Forest Health Protection conduct annual surveys to determine moth population levels in areas where outbreaks have historically occurred. Historical outbreak areas include the Coeur d’Alene Indian Reservation, McCroskey State Park, and the Moscow Mountain area of Benewah and Latah Counties. Trapping in these areas found high trap catches of adult moths, indicating building moth populations, but no defoliation has occurred yet in those areas. Fall surveys for Douglas-fi r tussock moth egg masses, the overwintering life stage of the insect, are helpful to predict where defoliation may occur in 2021. No egg masses were found in the usual outbreak areas of Latah and Benewah counties this fall, but it is possible that egg masses were too high in the trees to see from the ground. Douglas-fi r tussock moths have a natural inclination to move upwards in a tree, and egg masses will be concentrated in treetops until populations are very large. Th erefore, defoliation in the historic outbreak areas is still possible in 2021. High trap captures were also found at four sites in the Nez Perce National Forest near Elk City, and egg masses were found at one of these sites, so defoliation is also possible in this area.

popular pumpkin spice latte at local coff ee shops, I’m eager to prepare traditional harvest foods, like roasted acorn squash soup or a loaf of pumpkin bread.
Wherever the spirit and tastes of fall take your family -- whether to an apple orchard, pumpkin patch or nature center -- check out this granola recipe when you get back home. Packed with dried apples, pecans, pumpkin seeds, cinnamon and lots of healthy oats, it captures the tastes and crisp feel of the season.
Prepare it with your kids and store in a big, clear jar with a scoop inside for easy access on school days. Combined with milk and yogurt, it makes a convenient and healthy breakfast staple to keep the living easy during the morning rush out the door.

Apple Pecan Granola• 4 cups rolled oats (not quick cooking) • 1 cup coarsely chopped pecans• 1 cup hulled raw pumpkin seeds• 1 cup hulled raw sunfl ower seeds• 1/3 cup brown sugar
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon• 1/2 teaspoon salt• 1/3 cup olive or melted coconut oil • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup• 2 egg whites, slightly beaten• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup dried apples, chopped into bite-size pieces 1. Heat the oven to 350 F. Line a large rimmed baking
sheet with parchment paper, or spray with nonstick spray.
2. Combine the oats, pecans, pumpkin seeds and sunfl ower seeds, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt in a large mixing bowl.
3. Stir together the oil, syrup, egg whites and vanilla in a small bowl. Add to dry ingredients and toss well until fully coated.
4. Spread the mixture evenly on the baking sheet. Bake, stirring every 10 minutes, until lightly golden and toasted, about 25-30 minutes. Stir in apples in last 10 minutes.
5. Cool completely before serving. Store in an airtight container up to a week. Makes about 7 cups.
Note: Substitute brown sugar with honey or agave syrup, and combine with liquid ingredients before tossing with dry ingredients.

Avista Host Ribbon-Cutting to Mark Commencement of Commercial Operations for Rattlesnake Flat Wind Farm

Today, Clearway Energy Group (“Clearway”) and Avista Utilities (“Avista”) hosted a virtual ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the commencement of commercial operations for the newly-constructed 160 MW Rattlesnake Flat wind farm in central Adams County, Washington. Construction of Rattlesnake Flat began in April and consists of 57 turbines that interconnect to Avista’s transmission grid as part of a 20-year purchase power agreement between Clearway and Avista.
Leadership from Clearway and Avista were joined at the virtual ribbon-cutting by Governor Jay Inslee, Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz, Adams County Commissioner John Marshall, and Adams County Development Council Chair David Baumann, as well as Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy CEO Shannon Sturgil.
“Clearway is tremendously proud to complete our fi rst wind project in Washington and to contribute to the state’s goal of achieving 100% carbon-free electricity by 2045,” said Craig Cornelius, CEO of Clearway Energy Group. “Rattlesnake Flat wind farm is an investment in clean, aff ordable power, jobs in the local economy, and the Evergreen State’s ongoing commitment to addressing climate change. We’re grateful for Avista’s partnership and for trusting Clearway to deliver reliable and low-cost power to their customers for decades to come.”

Rattlesnake Flat wind farm is perfectly oriented to harness the prevailing wind to deliver low-cost renewable energy to Avista’s customers, providing enough electricity to power 38,000 homes each year.
“When we passed clean energy legislation in 2019, we had
projects like Rattlesnake Flat in mind,” said Gov. Jay Inslee. “Th ey have demonstrated that we can build our economy with clean energy jobs while reducing costs for customers. It is clear that climate change poses an existential threat to all of us, and projects like this one show we can rise to the challenge. Th ank you to Clearway, Avista, and everyone involved in bringing the Rattlesnake Flat wind farm online.”
“At the Department of Natural Resources, I have prioritized working with innovators and energy leaders to expand clean energy and create jobs in rural communities,” said Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz. “Th is project is a win for the county, workers, and the state. Built using a Project Labor Agreement – the fi rst utility-scale renewable energy project in the state to do so since the passage of the Clean Energy Transformation Act – we are creating hundreds of good-paying, union jobs in Adams County. And, because this project is partially on public land, the revenue we generate from Clearway’s lease will directly fund local government services and school construction while also helping diversify the county’s economy. Th is project is a model for how we, working together, can strengthen our environment and our economy.”
During construction, Rattlesnake Flat created approximately 250 jobs, and 10 jobs will be sustained to operate and maintain the wind farm going forward. To date, the project has invested $12 million into the local economy and will invest a further $350,000 each year during operations. Th e project will also contribute $1.5 million in property tax revenue in its fi rst year of operation and an annual average of approximately $700,000 each year for the next 30 years.
Blattner Energy, Inc. led the construction of the project. Additional safety measures were put in place to keep site staff safe from COVID-19. Despite the challenges posed by the virus, the project stayed on schedule.
