STEP, a national level initiative of Smile Foundation is being

implemented not only in Delhi but all over India. The main aim of this

program is to provide dignified livelihood and better career

opportunities for underprivileged youth. Smile Foundation is working

on skill enhancement in tandem with market requirements with

implementing partners. Students are trained in English

Proficiency, Basic Computer Education and Soft Skills for enhancing

their prospects of employment in fast expanding sectors.

Objectives:

(i) Aims at providing employment to underprivileged youth, through

skill training.

(ii) Develop marketable skills in youth and grooming them for getting

entry level jobs in the fast expanding sectors.

(iii) It is a holistic program that is not just about teaching English and

Computers but is also about developing the personality of the

participant and making them aware of the potential industries in

which they might take up jobs.

(iv)The project also offers career counseling to students to help them

identify their interests and understand themselves better.

SMILE TWIN E-LEARNING PROJECT

The era of digitalism basically started

with the invention of computer. Since

then, our society has been

experiencing remarkable growth in

technology. Education has benefited

from the inclusion of technology and

computers. Computers are now a fact

of life. It is also vitally important that

students learn to use computers to

improve their own work and prepare

for careers in a world where computers

have become as common as the pencil

and paper. Therefore, knowledge of

computer is of utmost importance.

30 girls of class XI and XII braved the

heat of May and attended computer

classes as a part of their summer camp

in a bid to make their vacations

productive. Aarohan not just focuses on

imparting knowledge but also helps

students get placed in reputed

organizations.

Aarohan aims to make women self

sufficient and helps them to live with dignity

and self respect. With our initiative of

teaching them the art of garment making,

women are moving out of poverty slowly

but steadily. They are able to provide their

children with education, become more

independent and grow as individuals.

During the training, women learnt making

Kurtis, Salwar, Blouses, Frocks of different

designs and Lehanga Cholies. With age no

bar, both young and old women take part in

this program.

Empowering Women

Mail Today Skills and

Entrepreneurship SummitMrs. Rani Patel, President and Mrs.

Saroj Dua, Women

Empowerment, Aarohan, attended the

Mail Today Skills and

Entrepreneurship Summit held at Taj

Mahal Hotel in Delhi. It had dignitaries

like Yes Bank Chief Learning Officer

Mr. Warren Stanley Patrick and

London School of Training's Rajdeep

Choudhury as panelists among other

eminent personalities. The Summit

was also attended by the Hon'ble

Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Mr.

Raman Singh.

Abacus is the most ancient tool used

for the purpose of calculations. It

helps the students to perform

complex calculations easily and

explore new dimensions in the field

of knowledge. The most crucial age

in anyone’s life is the early growth

period; it is the time when kids adapt

things easily. Sidhanta Panda, a

class 12 student and Mrs. Bindu

Panda taught our students numerical

maths and made number learning

fun by using abacus tools and

techniques.

Capacity Building

Abacus Classes

Starting 15th July 2017, students of the

STeP programme have been attending

special weekend Sessions at

Convergys, for capacity building . Here

the youth are equipped with the latest

skills in Computers and English such as

PPT making, presentation, group

discussions, role play and English

speaking among many other activities.

Mr. Nitish, CSR Manager at Convergys says “It is a great privilege to make the

youth aware of opportunities and how to make maximum use of these

opportunities to achieve success. This is very important in the present scenario

where there exist high levels of competition in almost every field. This will be a

great hand in creating a bright youth who are capable of exploring their talents

and build upon it.”

Ignorantia juris non excusat - Ignorance oflaw is no excuse but more often than not no

emphasis is placed on legal information and

awareness to the masses. To counter

this, our Volunteers from Symbiosis Law

School, IP University & Galgotia University

conducted a legal awareness program on 4

July 2017 to make our students aware of

their legal powers. Knowing legal rights is an

essential part in dealing with our day to day

life. They focused on the rights guaranteed

by our constitution to each and every citizen

of the country. Students expressed their

doubts on several matters and received due

clarification. It was a great opportunity for the

students to learn about the laws which are

governing our country.

At Aarohan we believe that music

improves creativity, learning and

cultivates many skills that continue

to be useful to our children

throughout their lives. Thus music is

a natural extension to education.

Mrs. Mamta, Music Teacher

continues to devote her time and

energy to teach music to our

children.

Legal Awareness

In a bid to prepare the

students for their Summative

Assessment 1 (SA1)

exams, Aarohan conducted its

first ever half yearly exams for

the children (4th to 11th

September) as per their

school standards and

syllabus.

Ms. Pushpa from Concern India visited Aarohan on 11th

September for an interactive session regarding various

programmes. She also had a short interaction with the girls

of class 6 wherein she enquired about the help they were

receiving from Aarohan in their academics.

HALF YEARLY EXAMS

VISIT BY CONCERN INDIA

The number of women suffering from

PCOS, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, ins

ulin resistance etc., it is high time that we as a

society start placing women’s health to be in the

front and centre. Dr. Mrs. Rekha Khandelwal, a

gynecologist by profession and also Vice

President of Aarohan, organized a women’s

health check-up camp for our women

beneficiaries and mothers of our students.

General diseases were diagnosed and treatment

suggested. The camp proved to be a great

initiative for the women since their health

seeking behaviour is poor.

Women health check-up and

Campaign

Nurturing Mother Earth American poetess Lucy Larcom rightly said “He who

plants a tree plants a hope”. Our children took part in a

plantation drive organized by the Smile Foundation.

The plantation drive took place at Laxman Public

School in Hauz Khas.

Elizabeth Taylor once said “It is bad

enough that people are dying of

AIDS, but no one should die of

ignorance.” To spread awareness and

sensitize people about HIV AIDS our

students took part in an awareness

campaign, marching through the streets

with inspirational and informative

placards.

AIDS Campaign

Gender Sensitization Workshop With the rising rates of crime against women

and teenage girls, the need for sensitization on

the same cannot be over-emphasized. Our

student volunteers from LSR College organized

a gender sensitization session understanding

the need of the hour for children of classes 6th

and above. They raised awareness about

gender equality, heinous crimes such as

assault and rape and self-defense strategies.

Unwanted medical emergency may arise at any

moment in our life. To prepare for such crisis, Vivo

Health Care took the wonderful initiative of organizing

a First Aid Workshop for our Skill Development and

vocational beneficiaries at the Vocational Centre of

Aarohan.

Eyes are windows to the soul and we must

take good care of them. We are thankful to

Apollo Hospital for conducting a three-day

educational centre. Common eye issues

such as refractive angle problems, eye

hygiene issues and convergence

insufficiency disorders were diagnosed and

aptly dealt with. Apollo Hospital also took

the initiative to provide spectacles of

suitable power to our students, who were

found with weak eye-sight. Eye-hygiene
