V-400E 11"RIDGEVENT

Balanced VentilationHow It Works

A balanced vent system is one that best utilizes three naturalforces: air pressure, the thermal effect and diffusion.Basically, for every square inch of ridge (exhaust) ventyou must balance it with at least one square inch ormore of soffit (intake) vent.

COR-A-VENT® ridge & soffit vent products offer:

• V-600 products – 20 sq. in.Net Free Vent Area (NFVA)/lineal foot

• V-400E & X-5 products – 17 sq. in. NFVA/lineal foot

• V-300 & Fold-A-Vent® products – 13.5 sq. in.NFVA/lineal foot

• S-400 Strip Vent line offers 10 sq. in.NFVA/lineal foot

With a ridge and soffit system, cooler ventilation air willbe drawn into the attic (or roof cavity if a cathedral ceiling)through the soffit/eave vents located within the positivepressure (intake) areas. It will exhaust through the ventsin the negative pressure areas, at the ridge. Wind moving

over the ridge literally “siphons” the hot/moist air out ofattic. If the ridge vent were to be installed alone, thenpart of the ridge would become an inlet vent to relievethis “draw”. This could cause weather infiltration.

The ridge vent must always be installed in combinationwith some form of soffit/eave intake vents. Do not useridge vents with gable vents or other roof mounted vents.

The “Ventilation Chute”, or air passageway betweenthe soffit and the ridge must not be blocked or restrictedso as to impede airflow. Once again, the ridge vent inthis situation can act as intake and exhaust, causingweather infiltration.

For a more attractive ridgeline, COR-A-VENT recommendsinstalling the ridge vent to the very ends of any givenridge. A ridge that is the same height from end to endmakes our vent even less noticeable.

Please refer to the backside of this page for examples oftypical continuous soffit vents and vent chute details.

Figuring Your Ventilation Needs:V-400E: Square footage of building footprint X .48 = Lineal Feet V-400E needed

17

V-300: Square footage of building footprint X .48 = Lineal Feet V-300 needed13.5

Example: 25' x 50' = 1250 Sq.F. 1250 x .48 = 600 600 ÷ 17 = 35 L.F. V-400E needed

The above formulas will give the amount of COR-A-VENT ridge vent needed fora 1/150 vent ratio, provided an equal or greater amount of soffit venting is used. For a 1/300 ratio, (building code minimum) use half the amount of ridge vent.Note: Code interpretation may vary. Consult your local building dept.

For the best appearance, install COR-A-VENT continuously the entire length of the ridge.

Note: Should you need any assistance indesigning your ventilation system, faxor mail a sketch and information to ourtechnical services department. COR-A-VENTwill respond with recommendations foryour particular building design.

COR-A-VENT® has promoted and taught balanced ventilation from the day westarted. It’s a concept all vent manufactures readily endorse. Unfortunately, that information doesn’t always end up in the hands of the person designing thebuilding or installing the vents. Balanced venting helps insure the performanceyou expect from ridge venting – uniform, increased airflow through the roofcavity without weather infiltration.

Balanced venting: An equal or greater amount of vent opening (sq. in netfree vent area/NFVA) in thesoffit (intake) than at theridge. For example, ourV-400E products have 17sq. in NFVA per lineal foot.To balance this, you need 2 soffit/eave/intake vents of approximately 8.5 sq. in.per lineal foot (1/2 of 17 ineach overhang).

Balanced venting:Continuous soffit vents arerecommended, especiallyfor venting cathedral ceilings.Wherever there is ridge

vent above, there should be soffit/eave/intake vents on the structure below. Also, COR-A-VENT strongly recommends using of one of our V-300 products(available in 11, 81/2 or 7" widths) on cathedral ceiling and hip roof applications.V-300 delivers 13.5 sq. in net free vent area. The volume of space to be ventedin cathedrals is smaller. Therefore a lower profile (5/8") vent is called for tofurther reduce the chance for infiltration. When installing a ridge ventsystem, all other vent openings (except soffits) must be closed off.

USE BALANCED AMOUNTSOF SOFFIT VENTTO RIDGE VENT

Continuous aluminum strip vent – 8-9 sq. in.NFVA per lineal foot.

8" x 16" under eave cornice vents with maximum spacing of 4' apart – gives 14 sq.in. NFVA per lineal foot.

Continuous perforated panels – 1' wideoverhang (typical) – gives 12-13 sq. in NFVAper lineal foot.

COR-A-VENT’s S–400 Continuous Strip Vent –10 sq. in NFVA per lineal foot.

Maintaining an unrestricted air passageway between the soffit and ridge is crucial to the performanceof the vent system, and must not be blocked or restricted. COR-A-VENT recommends a minimum 2" airspace between the roof sheathing and vent chute or insulation

COR-A-VENT®, Inc. is proud to introduce the first shingle-overridge vent made from 100% pre-consumer recycled plastic, new

Revolution Rolled Ridge Vent.Revolution (REV-11) is the only truly “Green” ridge vent available. The 11-inch wide by 20-foot long plastic vent core is made entirelyfrom the same polypropylene plastic used to manufacture all of

COR-A-VENT’s other products. We meticulously capture theexcess scrap during production, reprocess it and feed it

directly into the Revolution, keeping it out of landfillswhile also reducing the use of petroleum needed for

new plastic production.

Revolution’s precisely spacedventilation channels provide12 square inches of Net Free Vent

Area per lineal foot to promote theremoval of damaging moisture and heat from

inside your attic. This helps reduce heating and coolingloads when used in conjunction with balanced intake ventilation.

The simple, yet highly effective structural design of Revolution supportspower-nailability for easy installation on asphalt shingle roofs, while alsoproviding protection from rain, snow & insects.

•100% pre-consumer recycled polypropylene*

•Net Free Vent Area: 12 squareinches per lineal foot

•20-foot long by 11-inch wide rolls

4. Beginning at end of ridge, apply vent with minimum 1¾" nails (2 coils provided in box) following “NAIL HERE” guides along vent cap. Only apply nails within the area between leg cavities – DO NOT apply nails outside of “NAIL HERE” guide marks. Vent may be power nailed or hand nailed. Do not overdrive nails. Apply fi rst four nails (two on each side), then remove colored band to unroll rest of vent. Continue to apply according to marked guides. Repeat Step 3 to seal opposite end of vent.

5. For runs longer than 20 feet, additional vent rolls can be applied. Line up end of additional vent roll with previous roll by overlapping at offset lip, then apply Peel-&-Stick end cap to seal junction. Follow Step 4 to apply rest of vent.

6. Center shingle cap on vent and nail along “NAIL HERE” guideline. Continue applying caps until all vent is covered with ridge caps. Do not overdrive nails. Nail head should be fl ush with top of shingle, without indenting it. Pre-forming caps in cold weather helps avoid cracking.

Revolution Installation Instructions

1. Measure a 3" slot, 1½" each side of ridge centerline. This allows for a 2x ridge board or smaller. Snap chalk lines the entire length of the ridge. Cut slot with circular saw and clean out debris. Set saw depth so as not to cut roof rafters. Stop slot 12" short of any ridge end, intersecting ridge or obstruction (such as a chimney).

2. Cut clear band around roll, leaving colored band to hold all but the starter section together. Vent installs with legs down and fl at cap on top.

3. Remove backing from 1 Peel-&-Stick end cap section. Apply half of the section to end of the vent, starting with the top cap. Wrap other half of end cap down and underneath vent legs and Snow Screen to close off end of vent.

WRAP END FROM TOP TO UNDERSIDE OF VENT

7. For shorter runs of vent, trim areas provided every 12". Cut with utility knife, snips or saw, taking care to follow recognized manufacturers’ safety procedures for each.

Be careful not to touch knife blade. Always cut in a direction away from yourself. Wear proper hand and eye protection.

12 Square inches Net Free Vent Area per lineal foot. 20' long x 11" wide x 5/8" thick.

For use on roof pitches 3/12 - 16/12.

Call our technical department for any special application questions.

Important notes: COR-A-VENT ridge vents should always be installed with soffi t/eave/intake vents of equal or greater area. All other vent openings (except soffi ts) should be closed off. The air passage way or “Ventilation Chute” between the inlet (soffi t/eave/intake) and the outlet (ridge) vent must not be blocked or restricted.

COR-A-VENT products meet or exceed all nationally recognized building codes for ventilation.

Note: MAXIMUM 1/2" cap overhang required for valve (AWF) to close properly.

COR-A-VENT®has the answer for stopping all forms of weather infiltration with the

X-5 ridge vent: The Complete Solution – superior ventilation performance and the ability tostop rain and snow infiltration cold…even in weather extremes.

X-5 employs dual protection to stop infiltration. First is the AWF – the active weatherfoil, a specially designed, wind-activated, weather impenetrable valve – permanentlyattached to the bottom layer of our X-5 vent material. The AWF will stop wind driven rain from penetratingyour roof cavity. Second is the enhancedsnow screen, an air-permeable filterthat keeps out snow, even at low windspeeds, while still allowing hot, moistair to flow out of the attic.

How does the AWF work? We’ve engineered the valve to closeat 10 MPH (± 2 MPH). The leading (windward) edge of the AWF,which is shaped like an airfoil, catches the wind blowing at it,whether directly or at an angle, and snaps shut. Meanwhile, onthe downwind (leeward) side, the vent remains open and continuesto exhaust hot, moist air from the attic. Below 10 MPH, the valveopens completely for positive ventilation from both sides of thevent. The AWF effectively blocks weather from entering throughthe vent’s flutes. Dade County acceptance

1and our own in

house rain tests confirm this. The harder the wind blows, thetighter the AWF seals.

How long will the AWF last? Developed from a special formulationof Reemay® non-woven with a UV inhibited proprietary coating, it’sguaranteed to last. Tested to the same standards as compositionshingles, the AWF fabric was subjected to a 5000-hour exposuretest from a Xenon Arc weatherometer.

That’s theequivalent of 25 yearsexposure to south Florida orDeath Valley sun.The results –no significant embrittlement or degradation.

X-5 is made from a special 4mm sheet of extruded PP. Thismeans less restriction and more airflow. At the same time, it has17 sq. inches of NFVA (Net Free Vent Area) per lineal foot, which exceeds all national building code requirements.X-5 willwork with shingle, metal, tile and cedar roofs and is also aperfect Roof-To-Wall vent.X-5 is available in 11'' and 81/2''widths and is packaged 9 four foot pieces per box.

When performance counts – count on X-5. From COR-A-VENT –continuing our tradition as –„The Leader In Innovative Rooftop Ventilation®‰.

Like our V-300 vent line, X-5 comes in convenient 4' sections, cuts easily with a utility knife and is power nailable 2.Packed 9 4' pcs. to a carton, with 4 EC-400 end caps, it’seasy to handle going up the ladder and on the roof.

X-5 is covered under U.S. patents 6,213,868; 5,921,863; 5,704,834;5,542,882 & Des. 465,839. Other patents pending.

1 Testing completed, pending Dade County approval.

2 Use a minimum 13/4" roofing nail. Nail tip must penetrate sheathing.Installer to determine proper nail length to use.

Freedom…in architectural design calls for flexibility and COR-A-VENT’s V-300 and Fold-A-Vent (FAV-20) families of ridge vents deliver the unique flexibility toadapt to just about any roof design – whether on new construction or when re-roofing. V-300 & FAV-20 are low profile (5/8" high) and recommended for hard to ventilate roofs, such as cathedral ceiling and hip roofs. Both are available in 11", 81/2" and 7" widthsand work great with 3-tab or architectural shingles as well as cedar shake, slate, flat tileand metal roofs. Your ridge line will look sharp with V-300 or FAV-20.

Protection…is what COR-A-VENT offers with our enhanced snow screen (V-300E & FAV-20E)to keep out wind-driven precipitation. The highly breathable filter will allow hot, moist air out, but won’t let weather in.

Adaptability…is what V-300 & FAV-20 offer in any hip design for a clean, uncluttered appearance. They are ideal for steep pitch and short ridge length hip roofs andcan be extended all the way down the hip to the gutter for a smooth, unbroken roofline. V-300 7" or FAV-20 7" are sized for use with RIDGLASS™ and Z® Ridge* high profile hip andridge caps. Call our technical department for help with hip installations or unique applications.

Reliability…is what you get with V-300 & FAV-20. Our 4-ply design delivers 13.5 sq. inchesof Net Free Ventilation Area (NFVA) and the dimensionally-stable, profile extruded polypropylene material is

impact resistant and self-cleaning, but still cuts easily with a utility knife. Installation is a breeze. V-300 & FAV-20 arepower nailable and go on fast and straight – they won’t compress or hump like other low profile products.

Fold-A-Vent…is the perfect 20' solution. It is formed into 5 – 4' sections. The folds “relax” as the sections are extended, so the ventgoes on flat and smooth. While nailing the first section, our exclusive“Yellow Starter Band” keeps the remaining 4 sections together. Installwith your power nailer and standard 11/2" coil nails. The unique routed center slot allows you to center the vent on the ridge by sighting down it. No need to snap chalk lines. The flexible center hinge allows easy alignmenton roofs up to 16/12 pitch.

Unlike “rolled products”, the FAV-20 bundle stays put on the ridge whileyou install it – you won’t end up chasing it down the roof or picking

it up off the ground. Corrugated rolled vents look nice in thepackage, but wait until you try to unroll them! They have a

built-in curl. That’s because the vent is rolled into apackage while the plastic is still warm. Roll it out and it wants to come right back. Installation is tougher and

you’re left with a series of humps to flatten out.Fold-A-Vent

COR-A-VENT® has promoted and taught balanced ventilation from the day we started. It’s a concept all vent manufacturersreadily endorse. Unfortunately, that information doesn’t always end up in the hands of the person designing the buildingor installing the vents. Balanced venting helps ensure the performanceyou expect from ridge venting – uniform, increased airflow through theroof cavity without weather infiltration.

Balanced Venting: An equal or greater amount of vent opening(sq. in. net free vent area/NFVA) in the soffit (intake) than at theridge. For example, our V-300 & FAV-20 products have 13.5 sq. in.NFVA per lineal foot. To balance this, you need 2 soffit/eave/intakevents of at least 6.75 sq. in. per lineal foot.

Balanced Venting: Continuous soffit vents are recommended, especially for venting cathedral ceilings. Wherever there is ridge ventabove, there should be soffit/eave/intake vents on the structure below.

Also, COR-A-VENT strongly recommends using one ofour V-300 or FAV-20 products (available in 11", 81/2" or 7"widths) on cathedral ceiling and hip roof applications. V-300& FAV-20 deliver 13.5 sq. in. net free vent area. Becausethe volume of space to be vented in cathedrals is smaller,a lower profile (5/8") vent is needed to further reducethe chance for infiltration. When installing a ridge ventsystem, all other vent openings (except soffits)must be closed off.

For the best appearance, install V-300 & FAV-20 products continuously the entire length of the ridge.

Figuring Your Ventilation Needs: V-300 & FAV-20 have 13.5 sq. in. NFVA/lineal foot.

V-300: Square footage of building footprint X .48 = Lineal Feet V-300or FAV-20 13.5 or FAV-20 needed

Example: 24' x 70' = 1,680 Sq.F. 1,680 x .48 = 806 806 ÷ 13.5 = 60 L.F. V-300 or FAV-20 needed

The above formulas will give the amount of COR-A-VENT ridge vent needed fora 1/150 vent ratio, provided an equal or greater amount of soffit venting is used. For a 1/300 ratio, (building code minimum) use half the amount of ridge vent. Note: Code interpretation may vary. Consult your local building dept.

Note: Should you need any assistance in designing your ventilation system, fax or maila sketch and information to our technical services department. COR-A-VENT will respondwith recommendations for your particular building design.

1. Measure a 3" slot, 11/2" each side of ridgecenterline. This allows for a 2x ridge board orsmaller. Snap chalk lines the entire length ofthe ridge. Cut slot with a circular saw and cleanout debris. Set saw depth so as not to cut roofrafters. Stop the slot 12" short of any ridge end, intersecting ridge or obstruction (such as a chimney).

2. Cut the 3 clear bands leaving the coloredband to hold all but the starter section together.Turn the vent bundle upside down to expose theunderneath side of the starter section end. Followsteps 3 – 4 to create its own Folded End Cap.

6. Continue to tack nail both sides of entirelength of vent. Use nail pattern shown in step 4.Center shingle cap on vent and nail. Continuenailing until all vent is covered with ridge caps.Be careful not to overdrive nail. Nail headshould be flush with top of shingle, withoutindenting it. Pre-forming caps in cold weatherhelps avoid cracking.

5. Continue applying FAV 20 by walking outremaining sections. Pull firmly to fully extend, center vent on ridge and nail other end down.Make sure vent matches roof pitch before nailingboth sides in place. If necessary add FAV 20 untilentire ridge is covered. Use a utility knife to cut lastsection to length. Fold end to finish (steps 3 – 4).Caulk between bottom edge of vent and roof.

B

3. Use a utility knife to cut out a “V” shapednotch from the centerline approximately 13/4" infrom edge and remove loose material (A).Cut through the bottom 3 layers of the ventas pictured (B) (located approx. 13/4" from &parallel to the end). Remove loose pieces.Be careful not to cut into top layer.

4. Fold flap under and secure with a 2" roofingnail. This allows the nail to penetrate an extralayer of vent material (inset). Align starter end1/2" in from edge of roof, and centered on ridge.Be sure to caulk between bottom edge of ventand roof. Nail the starter section at pointsA, B & C, 2" up from edge.

If Architectural Shingles, Shakes or roofing with an irregular surface is used, apply a bead of caulk to roofdeck before installing vent. This will seal any gaps that could allow weather penetration under the vent.

A 221/2” Eave Vent Designed to Fit Between the Rafters

Introducing COR-A-VENT’s Latest Soffit Vent Innovation—

Providing soffit ventilation for open-rafter construction has long been aheadache for many builders. The optionshave been few, consisting mainly of acouple of screened-over holes in theblocking or a few metal grates every twoor three rafter bays that don’t providenearly enough ventilation and, quitehonestly, don’t look very good.

But COR-A-VENT® has the answerwith its newest product, Raft-A-Vent™,a 22.5" long vent strip designed to fitbetween the rafters, on top of the blocking. Raft-A-Vent is the ideal product for this situation.

At only one inch thick, Raft-A-Ventwill virtually disappear under the eave, but still provides 18.75" of Net Free VentArea per piece and is designed to runcontinuously in every rafter bay* to provide the superior intake ventilationyou need for a balanced vent system.

Good ventilation helps reduce moisturebuildup and the possibility of mold growth. For an unmatched system, pair Raft-A-Ventup with any one of COR-A-VENT’s ridgevents, like V-300 81/2" or FAV-20 81/2",both UL® Class A fire rated products.

*See the back of this flyer or go to cor-a-vent.com formore information about using COR-A-VENT ridge and soffitventilation products in areas that require more stringent designof roof diaphragms in accordance with IBC requirements forwind and/or earthquake loading.

S-400 Strip Vent: The original, continuous soffitventing solution is still the best choice for venting

overhangs and eaves – and once architects findout about it, they spec it on every job!

With 10 sq. inches NFVA per foot,S-400 provides superior intake

ventilation for any detail –from zero overhang to

open rafter tails.

The science of a good ridge and soffit vent system depends upon theequalization or “balance” of its two components – the soffit/eave (intake) airand the ridge (exhaust) air. This principle of good venting practiceworks well with most traditional roof designs.

However, many contemporary house and roof designs are limited in how well they can benaturally ventilated. This is a result of restriction in the amount of, or placement of criticalintake ventilation. In the interest of modern architecture and good ventilation practices,COR-A-VENT has developed various unique soffit venting applications using our S-400 Strip Vent.

All ridge vents, work best with soffit/eave (intake) vents. For top performance, placethe intake vents low on the structure, typically at the overhangs.

With new construction or when re-roofing, all other attic exhaust vents such as gable-end,roof, or turbine vents should either be blocked off or removed.

The stack effect (rising warmer air) is enhanced and thus maximum updraft (ventilation)is obtained when no other opening(s) can distort the air pattern between the intake andthe exhaust vents.

Figuring Your Ventilation Needs:

V-400E: Square footage of building footprint X .48 = Lineal Feet V-400E needed17

V-300: Square footage of building footprint X .48 = Lineal Feet V-300 needed13.5

Example: 25' x 50' = 1250 Sq.F.1250 x .48 = 600600 ÷ 17 = 35 L.F.

For the best appearance and performance install COR-A-VENT ridge and soffit ventscontinuously at the ridge and in the soffits.

Note: Should you need any assistance in designing your ventilation system, fax or mail a sketch andinformation to our technical services department. COR-A-VENT will respond with recommendationsfor your particular building design.

Balanced venting: An equal or greater amount of vent opening (sq. in. netfree vent area/NFVA) in thesoffit (intake) than at theridge. For example, ourV-300 products have 13.5sq. in NFVA per lineal foot.To balance this, you need2 soffit/eave/intake ventsof at least 6.75 sq. in. perlineal foot (1/2 of 13.5 ineach overhang).

Balanced venting:Continuous soffit vents arerecommended, especiallyfor venting cathedral ceilings.Wherever there is ridge

vent above, there should be soffit/eave/intake vents on the structure below. Also, COR-A-VENT strongly recommends using of one of our V-300 products(available in 11, 81/2 or 7" widths) on cathedral ceiling and hip roof applications.V-300 delivers 13.5 sq. in. net free vent area.

Maintaining an unrestricted air passageway between the soffit and ridge is crucial to the performance of the vent system, and must not be blocked or restricted.COR-A-VENT recommends a minimum 2" air space between the roof sheathing and vent chute or insulation

Siding Vent SystemProtects Your

Siding & Finishfrom Moisture Damage

COR-A-VENT’s Siding Vent System is perfect for creating a superior and cost-effective rain screen system behind wood or fi ber-cement siding. The Siding Vent System (SVS) promotes the natural removal of moisture from behind exterior siding and adds life to your home’s exterior. And unlike other rain screen systems, COR-A-VENT’s SVS will save you money, both up front and in the long run. The SVS features SV-3 Siding Vent, a 7/16" thick by 3" tall by 4-foot long strip wrapped with our Enhanced Insect Screen, and the NEW Sturdi-Strips™ plastic furring strips.

INSTALLATION IS EASY – Siding Vents and Sturdi-Strips are made from durable, compression resistant PP plastic sheets that can be power-nailed or screwed on without cracking, splitting or compressing. Sturdi-Strips are the superior and affordable alternative to wood or lath furring strips because they won’t split, warp or rot.

The Siding Vent System keeps your wall dry.Trapped moisture behind you siding can wreak havoc on your home’s exterior, causing peeling paint, rotting wood, deteriorating underlayment and mold and mildew growth. COR-A-VENT® Siding Vents and Sturdi-Strips allow that moisture to drain out and let air pass through to keep your wall system dry.

COR-A-VENT, INC.

COR-A-VENT Siding Vents will add life to your building materials.Moisture isn’t the only potential problem in your wall system. Surfactants from fiber cement siding and tannins from wood siding can eat away the housewrap underneath. COR-A-VENT Siding Vents and Sturdi-Strips space the siding away from the housewrap to prolong the life of your building materials.

4. Center shingle cap on vent and nail. Nail line for capshingles is to be 2" – 21/2" up from edge. Continue nailinguntil all vent is covered with ridge caps. Be careful not tooverdrive nail. Nail head should be flush with top of shingle, without indenting it. Pre-forming caps in cold weather helpsavoid cracking.

1. Measure a 3" slot, 11/2" each side of ridge centerline. This allowsfor a 2x ridge board or smaller. Snap chalk lines the entire length ofthe ridge. Cut slot with a circular saw and clean out debris. Set sawdepth so as not to cut roof rafters. Stop the slot 12" short of anyridge end, intersecting ridge or obstruction (such as a chimney). If Architectural Shingles, Shakes or roofing with an irregularsurface is used, apply a bead of caulk to roof deck beforeinstalling vent. This will seal any gaps that could allowweather penetration under the vent.

2. Nail one shingle cap at each end of the ridge, as withconventional application. Slide end cap (E.C.-400) over exposedend on first and last sections of vent, or use the Folded End CapTechnique shown on back page of this brochure. Center firstvent piece on end of ridge and nail through end cap and vent, keeping end of vent 1/2" from end of roof. Continue to tack nailfirst vent piece. Place nails 1/2" from ends, and 2" up fromedge, 3 nails to a side. Repeat this step for starter vent pieceat the other end of the ridge.

3. Continue applying COR-A-VENT, working from ends tomiddle. This technique helps remove any dips or sag in theridge. Align center with previous pieces, making sure ventmatches roof pitch before nailing. Continue nailing until entireridge is covered. Use a utility knife to cut last piece to length.Caulk where bottom edge of end caps rest on roof.

*Standard applications V-300 or V-600 – 3/12 - 16/12 pitch. For steeper pitch/wide ridge beam applications see complete installation sheet or see us on the web at www.cor-a-vent.com.**Nail requirements for standard vent and ridge cap installation: V-600 - 21/2" roofing nail, V-300 - 11/2" (with 3 tab shingles installed on new construction or after complete roof tear off).

Important–close off exposed center openings atboth ridge ends to prevent infiltration.

Be sure to use fasteners** long enough to penetrate vent and roof deck when nailing the vent and ridge cap on.Heavyweight, architectural and re-roof installations require a longer nail than the standard installation.

In high wind areas, use a washer headed nail to prevent shingle cap “blow off”. Or, apply a 1/4" to 3/8" bead ofroof cement between the ridge caps, 3/4" up from the bottom edge of shingles parallel to ridge.

COR-A-VENT®

Installation and Information Guide.Easy Installation:One person can easily install the handy four-foot COR-A-VENT sections. All you need is a hammer, circular saw, chalk line, utility knife, tape measure and a caulking gun. Here’s an installation overview for a standard pitch* gable roof application:

COR-A-VENT Ridge Vents are sized for residential and light commercial buildings up to 60 feet wide. Please call COR-A-VENT before using our ridge vents on buildings wider than 60 feet.

If the ridge length is too short to install the recommended amount of ventilation,COR-A-VENT® V-300E, FAV-20E (Fold-A-Vent®), V-400E, or X-5 may be installed inequal lengths on the upper half of the hips. These instructions can be used for mostshingle, shake or slate applications.

If jack rafters are 16" on center, cut the slot per our ridge installation instructions. If jack rafters are 24" on center, blocking may be needed to prevent the roof sheathingfrom sagging. Cut 2" x 4" blocks 8" long, and using 16-penny nails, nail blocks betweenjack rafters and flush with bottom of roof sheathing. Cut the slot per our ridge installationinstructions. The blocks will provide support for the roof sheathing. Nail roof sheathingto blocks with 8-penny nails. See Fig. A below. Note: When using blocking, allowfor a loss of 25% in ventilation due to the blocks.

The slot normally does not need to be cut more than half way down the hipsfor open attic roofs. The vent may be run all the way down to the end of the rooffor appearance reasons, BUT DO NOT CUT A SLOT UNDER IT! This will insurethat the air is drawn in from the soffit inlet vents and exhausted out through theridge and/or hip vents.

If it is an ALL cathedral ceiling roof then the slot must not be cut any closerthan 3 feet up from the outside wall of the building. This will prevent any icebuild up from leaking back into the building. In areas that receive heavy snowfall, the slot should stop 6 feet up from the outside wall of the house. The vent maybe run all the way down to the end of the roof for appearance reasons, BUT DO NOTCUT A SLOT UNDER IT! See Fig. B below for details on how to cut the ventwhere the hips and ridge come together. The vent can be cut with a utilityknife. Caulk all joints with black silicon caulking. Also, caulk end joints on thevent coming up the hip. Using the 20-foot FAV-20E (Fold-A-Vent) will eliminatemost joints on the hip itself. (See main drawing below.)

If 3 in 1 shingles are used, run a 3/8" bead of silicon caulking down each side ofthe slot, centered on the nailing surface of the vent. This will insure that the vent is sealeddown across the shingle courses and prevent water from weeping in under the vent.

If Heavy Weight Shingles, Shakes, Slate or Tiles are used: see Fig. Cbelow for a detail on how to install a batten strip to provide a level surface for thevent to sit on. Batten strips need to be as thick as the thickest point of the roofing. There MUST NOT BE ANY GAPS UNDER THE VENT or water may leak in.

Balanced Ventilation is not only having an equal amount of ridge and soffit vents in net free inches, buthaving the soffit and ridge vents balance each other on the structure. Wherever there is ridge vent above, there should be soffit/eave/intake vents on the structure below.

Call our technical service dept. for help with anystandard or specialty ridge or soffit applications.

Important notes: COR-A-VENT ridge vents should always be installed with soffit/eave/intake vents of equal or greater area. All other vent openings (except soffits) should be closed off. The air passage way or “Ventilation Chute” between the inlet(soffit/eave/intake) and the outlet (ridge) vent must not be blocked or restricted.

Figuring Your Ventilation Needs:V-600 = 20 Sq. inches NFVA/lineal foot. V-300 = 13.5 Sq. inches NFVA/lineal foot.

V-600: Square footage of building footprint X .48 = Lineal Feet V-600 needed20

V-300: Square footage of building footprint X .48 = Lineal Feet V-300 needed13.5

Example: 25' x 50' = 1250 Sq.F. 1250 x .48 = 600 600 ÷ 20 = 30 L.F. V-600 needed

The above formulas will give the amount of COR-A-VENT ridge vent needed for a 1/150 vent ratio, provided an equal or greater amount of soffit venting is used. For a 1/300 ratio, (building code minimum) use half the amount of ridge vent. Note: Code interpretation may vary. Consult your local building dept.

COR-A-VENT Folded End Cap Instructions:

1. Turn vent piece (V-300 shown) over so routed slot is facing up. Use utility knifeto cut out a "V" shaped notch in one end of vent.

For the best appearance, install COR-A-VENT continuously the entire length of the ridge.

4. Nail vent pieces to roof per instructions above. Be sure to caulk between bottom edge of vent and roof at both ends of the ridge.

Be careful not to touch knife blade. Always cut in a direction awayfrom yourself. Wear proper hand and eye protection.

3. Fold end flap under and secure with a roofing nail – 2" for V-300 or 21/2" for V-600. This allows for the nail to penetrate an extra layer of vent material.

13/4"V-300

2"V-600

2. Measure 13/4" from end of vent and make a parallel cut through bottom 3 layers. For V-600, measure 2" from end and cut through bottom 5 layers. Removeloose pieces. Be careful not to cut off top layer!!
